T1s: Mac to PC-- stroke thickening?

I apologise that I'm posting this one here, but I'm not sure which other forum would include as many font experts.
Here's the question-
If you have a font from the same foundry, available on both platforms, will the results on film, from the same file always be identical?
I'm PC based, but many other designers working on the Mac have told me that they have tried this in production and noticed that the PC version always comes out thicker. Again, given identical foundry, identical hints, why should this happen? Sub Q: would a PDF workflow circumvent this?
Many thanks.

Thanks again Tom.
If by "select and reset" you mean add again F041 from the Unicode Hex to Favorites, and from there double click or drag & drop to the document, I did it and same results: a rectangle in Word, an "A" in Excel & Powerpoint and my signature in Outlook, Mail, Pages, Numbers and Keynote. All this by double clicking or drag & dropping the SAME F041, in which I can actually see my signature in Character Viewer.
The interesting thing is that it works well in MS Outlook and not in the other 3 components of MS Office.
Same thinking apply to text substitutions: Outllook take the Apple text substitution, but Word, Excel & Powerpoint do not.
On the other hand, David at MacForums suggested to change to Unicode Hex and from there hold the option key and type F041. It has the same behavior as your method (the drag & drop or double clik): It works in MS Outllok, Mail, Pages & Numbers (not Keynote). It does not work in Word (get a rectangle), Excel (get an "A"), Powerpoint (get an "A") and Keynote (get a square).
Is there anything else I can do to get it work in Word, Excel and Powerpoint, if not by text substitution (the ideal solution) at least by double click or drag & drop?
Thanks

  • CS3 Outline Stroke Parallel Lines Bug

    Hello everyone...
I'll try to explain my issue as best as possible. I am using Illy CS3 on Win XP Pro.
I am creating installation instructions for an electronic product and need to show wire routing.
I created an art brush of two parallel black lines two different ways (two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them) and am getting the same result when I apply the Object>Path>Outline Stroke command.
What is happening is instead of Outlining each of the strokes and individual paths, Illustrator is outlining the space between the two strokes as one filled, closed path.
Perhaps this is expected behavior. However, Illustrator CS4 (which I use at home on a Mac) outlines the stroke as I would expect it to with the two lines as individual paths.
Does anyone know of a workaround or any way for Illustrator CS3 to behave in a similar way to how CS4 handles the strokes?
    Any help is truly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!

I can't follow your description, and can't replicate the problem trying to follow it.
    > I created an art brush of two parallel black lines two different ways (two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them) and am getting the same result when I apply the Object>Path>Outline Stroke command.
Explain "two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them".
    Brush 1 built from:
Two parallel open paths, each with a black stroke?
    Brush 2 built from:
Three parallel open paths, equally distributed, the two outermost ones having a black stroke, the middle one having a white stroke?
When you say "situated between them" are you talking about stacking order (paths with different weight strokes stacked in same location) or spacing (three parallel paths distributed vertically)?
You say you've created these two ArtBrushes and are then applying Object>Path>Outline Stroke. Are you in fact talking about outlining the strokes to the artwork
before converting it to an ArtBrush, or applying Outline Stroke to a path to which you already applied the ArtBrush?
Describe EXACTLY, step-by-step, command-by-command, the simplest steps necessary to replicate the problem. Don't use ambiguous terms like "line". Use the terms of the program.

  • Hundreds of DMProxy processes slowing down the Mac

    Hi all
(now posted as a separate question)
I've got the following problem on my MacMini with OS X 10.3.9. and tried a lot of things (permissions, harddisk repair, PRAM reset, Startobjects remove...) nothing worked...
After a while after login (sometimes seconds, sometimes minutes, but seriously always after a while), usually reproducible when starting "large" programs like Adobe Photoshop after a few seconds, the mouse and screen update rate sink immediatly to once in 5 to 10 seconds and all processes are slowed down similarly. No work is possible afterwards, not even killing some processes or restarting the mac by key-stroke.
I used "top" from the beginning and could see (after a few minutes of "not-refressing") a lot of DMProxy (with UID 0) processes (100-1000) blocking my systems, when this issue has occured.
I even don't know which process has started these DMProxy's, so this posting is my last help, before reinitializing the whole system - I still don't know, how this could happen.
Any suggestions - how to get rid of this DMProxy's

  • How to make logo less prominent on black MacBook

Has anyone had a go at making the Apple logo black or charcoal on the black MacBook? I'm thinking about getting the black model because the matte finish looks a little more durable but the garish looking white logo is a put off.

Has anyone had a go at making the Apple logo black or charcoal on the black
MacBook? I'm thinking about getting the black model because the matte
finish looks a little more durable but the garish looking white logo is a put off.
Wow this is the first post stating that they didn't like the white apple on the black mac. Different strokes for different folks.
The white macbook's logo (white on white) is probably less noticable as there's less contrast. There is no way to dim the logo as its lit from the lcd back light.
I believe the white MB's enclosure is more durable and less likely to show abuse. I compared both side by side and I thought the white was better in that respect. I love the black one and how it looks but the durable finish was one of my major points that I wanted a MB for.

  • On a Mac, can you navigate menus with one handed key strokes like Windows?

On a Mac, is there anyway to navigate menus with one handed keyboard strokes like you can in Windows? My girlfriend is a graphic designer and switched from Windows to Mac. She misses being able to use the Alt key and make menu selections. On Windows she can press "Alt" and then move through menus and submenus with one hand on the keyboard. When you press "Alt" the first letter of every menu is highlighted. When she presses a certain letter the menu drops down, and the first letter of every submenu is then highlighted. She can then navigate through all the submenus until she hits the selection she wants, all using the left hand on the keyboard. It's very fast and efficient. Can you do something similar to this on a Mac?
The reason she wants to do this is because when she is in Photoshop, she likes to use her right hand on the mouse with the cursor inside the canvas (sketching, moving layers around) while she makes menu commands with the left hand. It is 10 times faster this way than using the mouse for everything. Hot keys are not the same because you must have those memorized. With the "Alt" key function, you can open a drop down menu, see the choices, and make your selection.
I have been a Mac person my whole life, and I have to say, it's a pretty awesome function. I really want the Mac to have something similar.

The 20-year-old argument on that web page isn't very convincing. Keyboard shortcuts are certainly faster for experience power users who do the same thing every day. The mouse is faster only for new users or users doing non-repetitive commands every day.
It is interesting that one of the posts on that page said this:
I remember one mainframe company in the sixties that came up with the following command-key guidelines:
Use the first letter of the command word
If the first letter is already used, use the last letter
If the last letter is already used, use the second letter
If the second letter is already used, use the second-to-the-last letter
    etc.
This is actually very similar to how the keyboard-driven menus work in Mac OS X. The advantage over the Windows method is that when there is more than one command in a menu that shares the same first letter, you do not have to memorize which command uses which letter. You just type ahead until the correct command is selected.
I would, however, encourage Derek Doublin1's girlfriend to learn the direct keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. On Mac or PC, for me pressing Command-Option-I is much faster than either the mouse or using the keyboard to drop the Image menu and walk down to the Image Size command.

  • Mac Book Pro Password - Husband had a stroke and can't remember

My husband had a stroke, and he can't remember the password on his Mac Book Pro. He'd really like to try to use his computer, and we want him to, as we hope it will help his recovery.

Very sorry to hear that. If you have 10.7 or above (or it's a newish Mac), reboot to the recovery partition - hold down cmd and R as you reboot. From the Utilities menu, choose Terminal, and type
    resetpassword
    and follow the prompts.
If you have 10.6 or earlier, you'll need the install DVD to accomplish the same. Insert  it, reboot and immediately hold down C as it's booting up. Choose the install disk when you're prompted to. Follow the instructions here:

  • MAC | stroke style stipple crashes on test movie/ publish in cs3 cs4

stroke style stippled crashes when testing movie or trying to publish.
I have done some tests where I've drawn a random animation of just strokes say 10 frames with a solid style. Then I've used the same animation but changed the style to Stippled (also with edits to that stroke style ie very dense) and it CRASHES when i try to play the movie.
This is VERY frustrating for such a seemingly simple change on such a basic part of flash!!!!!!
This problem is on cs4 and I have also check Flash cs3 at my uni and it does exactly the same when i tried the test again (I made a new clean animation just to make sure it wasnt the files falt)so its not a problem with my computor but the software!
found out this search result with the same problem http://www.actionscript.org/forums/archive/index.php3/t-41241.html so im not the only one...
is it just on the mac versions?
This is very anoying as i have a project in on friday and thought this style went with what i was working with

Like I said, it is hard to be certain.
As far as I am aware, issues with Snow Leopard are specific to font anomalies in 10.6.7, and the fact that you cannot use the OS's printing system to produce PDFs via File > Print from Adobe applications. Do you have a link or citation for the issues you read online?
    So, reasons to suspect Adobe: running the Adobe installer triggered the problem; Adobe programs crash and they crash in Adobe code;
Reasons to suspect Apple: it's not a single program crashing; the crashes don't seem to make sense; crashes happen for both CS4 and CS5; crashes affected non-Adobe programs (that is what you meant by "all my programs," right?).
So, my intuition is you should try an OS reinstall.
Though even if the root problem is the OS, Adobe probably has some blame here -- Adobe's programs should not crash. So you can certainly take it up with Adobe and hold firm to the line "your program should not crash; why is it crashing" and ultimately they should be able to tell you why (based on the crash report, and perhaps other things). But the answer may turn out to be, "because this Apple subsystem is broken. Fix it and our programs will stop crashing."
Have you looked at the logs in Console.app? They might shed some additional light.
Also, since you have recently reinstalled the OS, you are probably in a good position to reinstall the OS. Most people are reluctant to do so because they have a lot of data and applications, and it's a huge pain to preserve them. It sounds like you're not in that position, so doing that reinstall is relatively easy. I would therefore do it just for the peace of mind.

  • Cannot make a stroke on CS2 for mac

    Hello,
i'm making a document made up of several images imported from photoshop (copy/paste). When i try to make a stroke in each object nothing happens. I can select the color thickness but the object looks the same...the align strike feature is the only that's off...
any ideas so that i can add a stroke?
    Thanks!

the problem is that i cannot create a clipping mask of those objects...the object>clipping mask option is in gray and unavailable...
That would appear to be a limitation of CS2.
You'll have to re-copy and re-paste the images into Illustrator CS2. You should then be able to add strokes because the clipping mask will present. Be certain you don't delete it. You'll have the raster image and then what appears to be an extra path around the image. They will be grouped. Be certain to retain both items.
Another option is to use the rectangle tool and draw a rectangle the same size as your images, then group that path with the image. That will also allow you to stroke the path.
I tried several things here and the above two items are the only items I could find that will work to stroke the perimeter of the images. I've tried to find an effect or other easy set of commands within the document that would work, and nothing would. In CS3 or newer you could have just used the Object menu, seems CS2 doesn't support that however.

  • Can't remove stroke from shape CS6 Mac

Hi, I've not run into this before, but haven't used Pshop CS 6 a lot.
I am setting the stroke to 0 and none, but Pshop keeps putting a stroke around the shape:
    http://screencast.com/t/J7sgWJpF
Not sure what is wrong or how to fix it.
    Thanks
    Jeff

To me that looks like the path instead of a stroke.
    (path outline)
After you add the shape and press the enter/return key or if you switch to a different tool such as the Hand Tool does the stroke go away?

  • Missing stroke panel - Mac InDesign CS6 (8.0.2)

Can't remember when I last needed to apply a stroke to an object but I've found today that I have no stroke panel. I've tried deleting prefs as variously described but that hasn't helped. Where can it be hiding?
    Help!
    Thanks.

Thanks for the fast response. I have try all of the Workspace options, but nothing seemed to open up the stroke tools. I went ahead and cleared my preferences and jumped into Edit>Menu and made sure all was set to "visibility". I'm still missing the "stroke" tools which normally are listed under Window>Stroke. Got anymore ideas?

  • Mac CS5 Illustrator rectangle/round rectangle stroke problem...

I have an IMac with 10.6.3. and have CS5 installed. But i have encountered a problem in Illustrator.
When I draw a rectangle or round cornered rectangle I can't stroke it below 1 point. It just snaps back to 1pt.
It is fine though when drawing a circle, star etc. in the same tool.
The blue outline and handles go completely out of position if I align the stroke to inside or outside. And then if I
reduce the stroke I can BUT it kind of cuts the rectangle weirdly.
This is a BIG problem...please help someone.

    n,
You should untick Align to pixel grid in the transform palette/panel.

  • Anchor points move and entire shape gets distorted from changing stroke thickness

I have a fairly simple drawing that I drew at a larger size so I could be precise with it, and now I want to reduce it down to the finished size, and thicken the stroke, but when I make the stroke thicker, my anchor points move and the entire drawing gets distorted.
In 24 years of using Adobe Illustrator, I've never seen this happen. When I click on the "up" arrow on the Stroke palette a bunch of times to incrementally increase the stroke thickness, I can watch the anchor points "walk" around as my shape gets distorted.
If I instead enter a numerical value for the stroke thickness, this doesn't happen.
However, if I use the Scale tool to shrink the drawing down to 10% or 20% size or whatever, with Scale Strokes and Effects UNCHECKED, again, the anchor points move and the drawing is distorted.
This is all on a brand new installation of Illustrator CS 6 for Mac (though I've been using CS 6 for about 2 years now, my hardrive crashed this past weekend and I had to reinstall everything).
Did I miss a little checkbox somewhere that I've never seen before that's making this happen?
    Editing this post to add:
Also, some of the objects in my drawing will not allow me to change the stroke to less than 1 point thickness. If I choose .5 or .25 pt from the pop-up menu, or even if I enter the numerical value, it jumps back to 1 point. Other objects in the drawing do not.
These objects in question are "rounded rectangle" shapes that I've used the scissor tool on to cut and then used the "join" command to put them together with parts of other shapes that were "scissored' as well.
All of the "Ellipse" and "Rounded Rectangle" shapes that I left intact do not exhibit this problem with stroke and distortion.

You are being bitten by the Align-to-Pixel-Grid. Select everything and go to the Transform panel and turn off Align-to-Pixel-Grid at the bottom of the panel; then go to the panel flyout (small triangle, upper right) and turn off Align Objects to Pixel Grid.

  • Dual boot windows mac mini

I got a Mac mini and in general I'm happy with it but found out that there's some software I use regularly that is just much better on Windows.  They barely support OS X although technically they do.  So I would like to dual boot Windows as it seems like this is supported and not crazy.
I followed the bootcamp and some guides I found via Google.  I have the mac mini 2014 with 8 gig ram and 1 terabyte of space.  I have dual monitors setup and a logitech mouse and a logitech gaming keyboard G110 - both USB.  (I also own a wireless apple keyboard which I occasionally use with my iPad).  My first problem was a DOS screen telling me I can't boot up on the specified disk but I did get some help off Google telling me to hold down option while booting (this should be in the guides ;p) but it was easy to fix.. however I'm stumped on what's happening now.
When I click the Windows partition, it starts booting up Windows 7 Premium 64 bit setup and all looks good.  Then a screen pops up asking me what language/region I am.  The default is United states (perfect).  On this screen my keyboard and mouse are useless.  Or it's frozen.  I think the former.  I think the computer just can't recognize them.  And I cannot figure out a way around this.  If anyone can - please help I will be very thankful.
I've tried booting up using the Windows 7 DVD I own and an ISO installed on a USB flash drive per the Bootcamp installer.  Results are the same.

Use Boot Camp!! Sounds like you have the install disc. Make sure you completely erase a USB 2.0 Thumb Drive format it as one MS DOS Master Boot Record partition. Download Drivers to it. I checked this box in boot camp only.
Having install disc and driver thumb drive ready. Insert Windows install disc and plug in Thumb drive.
Open Boot Camp uncheck first 2 boxes. Continue
Size the BOOTCAMP partion you want it to be by sliding the bar. Or split your HD is an option.
After that is complete. You will be asked where to install. Select BOOTCAMP partition
Click Drive Options (advanced).  Click Format. Click OK. All goes well you click Next and it will format as NTFS
Follow instructions to to install, set up and configure Windows.
GO TO APPLE  SUPPORT no where else. PRINT BOOT CAMP Installation & Setup Guide. It is in my binder with my Windows 7 Professional Disc. You'll need this, I'm afraid, to have on hand. When Windows is up and going, Antivirus 1st, Install Windows express updates only. Do not update Apple drivers for Windows. Running Windows 7 Pro on my Mac Mini since I bought it in August. Use it for those outdated programs I can't run on Mac or Windows 8. Love it.
GET THE MANUAL Please. Have fun with it.
Oh, try left clicking your USB Mouse to make it work. If not use keyboard strokes. i.e. I  a ccept the license agreement (note that the a is underlined. hit "a" on the keyboard to check box.
