T21 won't start on battery only. Starts OK with charger, which can then be disconnected!

My Thinkpad T21 will not start on battery only. Indicators turn green (ventilator and disc try to run) for only less than a second and nothing more. If a charger/adapter is connected the machine starts OK, and then I even can disconnect the charger and continue to work. I only see a slight decrease in backlight intensity. This started after I connected a defective charger to the computer . I'm afraid some FET switch 'died'. I've found elsewhere suggestions to discharge a certain "overcharged capacitor" and tried it by disconnecting the battery and pressing the ON button continuously then repeatedly but without results. According to the service manual I should replace the main board, but before I do that I'm ready to benefit from my possibility to access SMD repair tools. I've nothing to loose.  Does anyone know the startup circuitry or point me to the possibly bad FET? Does anyone have the keyboard circuit or at least the connector's pin designations (or at the very least: which pins are wired to the POWER button)? Thanks, ANTIK

Repeating my response to your thread at TPF in case you (or anyone else hasn't seen it):
It does sound possible that one (or more) of the MOSFETs on the motherboard has died. As far as we know, there are no schematic diagrams publicly available for any Thinkpad. Assuming that you want/need to know the pinout designation for the keyboard connector in order to turn on the laptop without the keyboard attached, then you can use the simple port replicator (FRU 02K8668) to do that. Mount the laptop in the port replicator (without the keyboard) and you can then press the power button on the replicator to turn on the system. These port replicators are available on eBay, like this one:

There may be cheaper sources on eBay or locally.

My 128 Gb iPad cannot do airplay mirroring with Apple TV 3.  It only airplays with screen off (like iPad 1), and it can only do airplay with apps which have the airplay button.  No airplay button when sliding the bottom opened apps to the right!  Note : This problem persists after HDMI cable has been changed, and Apple TV was reset.  My another iPad 4 64Gb also on the same most updated ISO has no problem.

I restarted the iPad, it is okay now!  I think it is because I have been using the smart cover for too long, without shutting down the iPad completely!  It just works fine with the airplay signal appearing again after restarting the iPad.

Call Apple Care.   You are still under warranty.  You also have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your iPod with no questions asked.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • [W520] Does not start on battery only, doesnt shut down or sleep

    Hi all,
I have quite a huge problem after flooding my W520 with tea. Obviously immediately after spilling it I flipped the machine, unplugged ac, took out the battery. Few days after laptop didnt start so I had it serviced. The keyboard was changed and whole interior was cleaned. At home I tried to power on the laptop (with battery only) but with no reaction, then plugged ac and computer started itself (I didnt press the power button). When it starts it is possible to unplug the ac, and it works on battery.
Second problem is that the machine doesnt want to powerr off or sleep. It shuts down for 2-3 second then automatically starts (both on ac and when already started with battery). To shut down I have to take out the battery and ac. (Tried all possible stuff, WOL, Always on mode and so on but nothing works) ;/
Called the service with explanation but nobody seemed to know how to fix it. If you have any ideas that could solve the problem please help...

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that you spilled tea in your Lenovo ThinkPad W520 and you are facing multiple issues with the system.
I would suggest you to perform Flee Power – remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect the AC Adapter and battery and try to turn ON the computer.
I would suggest you to update BIOS to the latest version, try swapping with a good known AC adapter and battery.
Basically there's 3 power sources for the motherboard ac adapter, laptop battery and CMOS battery. If either of them goes bad or is malfunctioning you might experience strange behavior. If you have confirmed the functionality of the above said, it probably points to a system board failure.

    Mithun.

    Hey goldsalltime,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
I would suggest trying a different battery in the BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphone, if the issue persists then I suggest contacting your network service provider for repair options.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Cheers.

  • I have installed an Windows Partition, and now my keyboard won`t run and it only starts Windows

I have installed Windows with boot camp, now my MacBookAir starts only with Windows and the keyboard and the trackpay don`t work
    Please i need some HELP

Have you installed the support drivers that Bob mentioned above?
If you used a USB to install Windows (I take it you're on Windows 7) and it's at least 8GB download the support drivers to the same USB then boot in to Windows with the USB plugged in and the automatic install process should start. Maybe

  • IMac 2012-13 won't start regularly.  Only starts in Safe Mode

Need help troubleshooting, or should I just take into the Genius Bar?
Just happened for the first time today.  I've heard that third-party apps may cause these issues.  I run Intego Protection Software with a LaCie ExHDD for backups.
    Need help ASAP!
    Thank you!

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.
Select only users and Computer & Network Settings in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications or Other files and folders. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
    After that, run Software Update.
If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
I strongly recommend that you never reinstall commercial "anti-virus" products or "utilities," nor any software that changes the user interface or modifies the functions of built-in applications. If you do that, the problem is likely to recur.
Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.

  • Powerbook G4 500 won't boot from battery only

    Hi,
I have a Powerbook G4 500 Ti (running OS 10.4.8 that will not boot from just the battery without the powercord attached. I have tried several different batteries and the same results.
Sometimes under "About this Mac" the battery show's it's there but most of the time it doesn't show a battery and an X appears on the desktop.
What I've done - replaced the battery with a fully charged one from a working PB, reset the PMU, Reset the Pram, Cleaned the contacts on all batteries and in the battery bay, Reseated the Airport card, Down loaded the latest Apple updates today and loaded them. The computer runs great with just the powerchord and sometimes the battery icon shows a picture of a plug, but then it reverts to the X.
Another problem, I have a working Airport card installed from another machine and it doesn't show up in the About this Mac window I get Airport Card: No INFORMATION FOUND that it is installed. Could this be related and also can a dead PRAM battery cause this? Any help would really be appreciated I've tried everything. Thanks for your response in advance.

Hi, Opie. A dead PRAM battery will generally prevent a Tibook from starting at all, with or without the AC adapter or a main battery in place. Therefore, I doubt that that's your problem.
Your Airport card cage and your battery are both connected (separately) to the Powerbook's main logic board. it is possible for those connections to work loose over time, or to be hindered by oxidation on the contact surfaces. You can try disconnecting and then reconnecting each of them several times to wear away oxidation and make sure the connectors are properly seated.
This page is the starting point for a complete, well-illustrated set of take-apart instructions for the 500MHz Tibook. The bottom illustration on the page that shows how to remove the keyboard shows the battery connector: a large white plug with several multicolored wires attached, directly beneath the keyboard's left-hand Command (Apple) key. The last illustration in the instructions for removing the Airport card shows the card's connector: a rectangular tan or orange tab at the right-hand end of the flex cable that is connected to the Airport card socket. While you have the bottom cover of your Tibook off, check to make sure the card is firmly seated in its socket and that the flex cable is solidly connected to the logic board.
Another possible reason for the battery's not being detected sometimes: Some 400MHz and 500MHz Tibooks had an ill-fitting battery: it slopped around in the battery compartment and could lose contact. Apple offered for some time to install free of charge a small shim that took up the slack inside the battery compartment and kept the battery pressed against its contacts. If that correction was never made in your Tibook, or if the shim has fallen out or shifted from its proper position, your Tibook may be suffering from the original problem now. Check to see that there is no movement of the battery once you snap it into position in the battery compartment. If there is any, post back for guidance on making and installing a shim. (Apple long since discontinued the repair program, and it's a simple thing to make yourself.)

  • Brand new macbook won't run off battery, only when plugged in

I just go my new macbook last week and being new to mac computers, I didn't realize that it won't run from just the battery power until last night. The battery light shows it's fully charged. If i'm working with it plugged in and it becomes unplugged, it shuts down and when I reconnect the power cord, it resumes from the same webpage or whatever I was last working on. I opened up the battery compartment and removed the battery and then held the power button for 5 seconds, but that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone know what I might try or if something needs to be set up in order to run off the battery? Thanks! Leigh

    Hello leighdk,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can by all means take some good advise from the people on this board in response to you problem.
But here is the best advise, especially since you're new to Mac.
Call Apple Care or take it back to the store and have them check it out. It is under warranty. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the Mac for a completely different or give it back because you do not like it. they may try to charge you a restocking fee but this should not be the case since there is an issue with you machine.
Call Apple, see what they say... Then if you can't get it resolved then post back and maybe we can give you some sound advise.

  • Iphone 5s won't turn on, battery is fine, and new charger

I have bought a new charger for my iPhone 5s, its not charging nor will the apple logo or even battery logo with lightening bolt images pop up. Its been on the charger for days, no life. held home and power button, no life... held home button and plugged into iTunes to force a restore no luck... only used my phone for 11 days.

Now what we can try doing in this case is putting your iPhone in a recovery mode and then try to restore your device in iTunes. Now I need you to plug your device into your compeer and then I need you to hold down the Sleep / Wake and Home button both down at the same time for about 20 seconds until you see the Apple Logo on the screen. Once you see the Apple Logo, let go of just the Sleep / Wake button by itself and keep your finger held down on the Home button. You will then see a different message on your iPhone screen and then you will see a different message on iTunes as well. iTunes should open and display a message such as: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." Let me know when you have seen this and we can continue. Let me know when you have done this and we can move on further from here please!
This worked, this is what apple support suggested I do.

  • The screen on my iPhone 4S won't turn on, it only goes black with blue vertical lines

So my iphone 4s can recieve texts and i can use the touch screen but the screen itself is black with horizontal blue stripes, which means that i cannot see anything that is happening on my phone. Everything is working other then the screen... Can anyone give me any ideas on how to fix this?

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset   >  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Restoring  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

  • HT201401 battery is not holding a charge i can see it going down with phone off and sitting on my desk, no apps are opened.

My battery charge is not lasting.  No apps are being used or opened.  The phone is losing power without using it.  It is sitting on my desk not being used and is now reading 58%.  Fully charged at 100% this morning (8:00).  Help!!!!!!

    1. Plug phone into AC adaptor and charge for at least 30 minutes
    2. If not on, reset phone: press both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.
If no reponse to above, there is hardware damage and you need to take it to Apple or whoever provides iPhone service in your country.

  • Problem with partion resulting in "One of the source volumes specified has an invalid format and cannot be protected using Windows Backup. Only volumes formatted with NTFS/ReFS can be protected."

We have two new Windows Servers 2012 R2 that I'm trying to set backups on using a script. When I used the -allCritical switch, I get the error specified in the subject. When I look at the partition information using diskpart, I see a 2048 MB partition with
no drive letter labeled as System that is FAT32. I was never prompted to my recollection of what file system to format the partition with. Is it safe to assign this partition a letter, convert to NTFS, and then remove the drive letter?
    Thanks

I did. I assigned the drive a letter and ran  CONVERT [drive letter]:
/FS. I was really worried during the reboot, but it came up OK, and after it was back online, I removed the drive letter.

  • HELP!! My player only starts in safe mode and won't do anything!

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS" size=3>I dropped my nomad zen xtra (which i have to say has happened before), but this time it locked up - i couldn't shut it down or do anything else. Now when I start it, it only starts in safe mode, but it won't do anything in safe mode. It tells me "hard disk problems". It won't allow me to reformat even. What do I do?

Sounds like the player is broken. You can either return it to Creative for a paid repair, or try and fix it yourself by replacing the hard dri've (assuming that's what's broken). There's a guide here on hard disk replacement, but it's not for the faint hearted

  • Power Query occassionally connects, seems to load, but returns only 200 rows with 1 error

I have a Power Query that i have used for few weeks, successfully, but occasionally requires being run a few times to return records.  Just lately it seems to require run more than a few times to make it work.
When it doesn't return records , it seems to connects and start retrieving data, but returns only randomly like 100 - 200 rows with 1 error.  The error doesn't have any message. So its hard to troubleshoot from that perspective.
Query appends two other large and merges in a few others. The data sources are either csv files, Sharepoint Lists and tables in workbook.
I haven't identified anything in terms of environment or query changes that might cause this.
When it finally does retrieve all records,  it might be after i have done the following things, but i can't say for certain exactly what did the trick:
    * to run query multiple times
*maybe simply changing anything in query resolves issue
    * making upstream queries (that are merged or appended into this query)  to Not Load to worksheet or model, eg just have connection
I'd think this type of error and situation while not common is encountered by others.
Does this ring a bell for anyone, and if so, can you please shed some light on the reasons and resolutions for this?
    Thanks!

If you click on "1 error" it should show the editor with a query that will select the rows with errors. This unfortunately might not show all errors for various reasons, but you should try it.
If that doesn't work, here's an example of how to retrieve error details.
    Suppose the following query:
    = Table.FromRecords({[A="B", B="C" + 1]})
Notice how we're using the + operator with a string and number. This will result in an error.
I can create a custom column that uses the 'try' operator over the B column. This returns a record with details which I then expand to retrieve the message.
    let
    Source = Table.FromRecords({[A="B", B="C" + 1]}),
    #"Added Custom" = Table.AddColumn(Source, "Custom", each try [B]),
    #"Expand Custom" = Table.ExpandRecordColumn(#"Added Custom", "Custom", {"HasError", "Error"}, {"Custom.HasError", "Custom.Error"}),
    #"Expand Custom.Error" = Table.ExpandRecordColumn(#"Expand Custom", "Custom.Error", {"Message"}, {"Custom.Error.Message"})
    in
    #"Expand Custom.Error"
Let me know how this works for you.
    Tristan
