T40 graphic card error

Posted: Tue Dec 05, 2006 12:09 pm    Post subject: IBM T40 freezing
I have a question about my IBM T40 laptop. My computer is working fine for almost 4 years. One day the screen suddenly went black when I was using it. I held the power button and reboot it, the system remind that there was a system error and asked me to send the error report to the Microsoft, I did, and then got a report back saying that there is a problem with the video card, and this causes the computer to restart again and again. The report provided 2 solutions, but even before I tried one, the screen went back. I held the power button and reboot again, and pushed blue Access IBM button, then I tried to recover to the factory settings, the computer started to reinstall, but before it finished, the screen became black again...I consulted quite a few computer experts, they all said this is the graphic card failure, and I have to change the motherboard...
I called IBM help service, they say because my laptop warranty period has finished, I will be charged if I want to get it fixed, and the charge is £193 + VAT + parts. But the market price for second hand T40 is just about £200!
I paid a lot more money for my IBM laptop than other people did for other makes, I did not expect the motherboard to be gone so quickly.
Anyone has better solutions?

Welcome to the forum!
What you're dealing with is a known issue on T4x/R5x series ThinkPads with ATi graphics. Basically, the graphic card starts detaching itself from the motherboard as a result of heating/cooling cycles and/or chassis strain.
The only permanent solutions to this problem are GPU solder re-balling, or motherboard replacement. Temporary fixes are numerous, the most popular one being applying several "post-it" stickers on the top of GPU.
Good luck.
Cheers,
George

  • Windows 7 graphics card errors with games - how do I get/update drivers??

Just recently installed windows 7 with bootcamp and having some issues with games and screen savers. Most of the screen savers that come with 7 say I need a video card compatible with Direct3D. Secondly, 2 games that I want to play (minecraft and terraria) both give me graphics card errors. Minecraft works fine on the OS X side but says I should update my graphics card drivers. Terraria says the graphics card does not support Direct3D. How/where do I get these drivers or how/where do I update them? The graphics card I have is NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, running on a MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2009 model.

And you tried the Nvidia drivers, no.

  • G5 graphics card error: ATI Radeon 9800 pro

    Hi there,
The display on my mac has all of sudden gone haywire, there's bars across the entire screen that keep on changing colours/flickering etc, and when I try to drag open windows they become blocks of noisey colour.
So far i've tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, ran the hardware test which picks up an error on the VRAM which is: 2ATI/1/4:113-A1440; ;16 (I think, it's very difficuilt to read properly), also pulled the graphics card out, given it a bit of a dust etc and put it back in to no avail. I've also tried plugging in another monitor which had the same problem.
I'm assuming my graphics card's fried, but I wanted to check on here to see if anyone had any other ideas. I'm slightly wary about splashing out on a new card when i'm not completely sure it's the card that's the problem, it could be the logic board for all I know. Also not too keen in taking it to the apple shop as it'll be away for up to two weeks, and I really need a working machine just now.
My specs are G5 single 1.8ghz, 512 ram, ATI Radeon 9800 pro card (not the special edition)
Apologies for the long message, and for any spelling mistakes as I can barely see what i'm typing, any advice most appreciated.

I would suggest first blowing compressed air all around the inside including logic board and video card (if you are adept at removing the card and reinstalling the better, careful not braking the AGP clip at the end of the slot that latches into the end of the card). Also keep the can upright at all times. This should help dislodge dust that build up over time and may cause overheating and unusual operation.
Then run Apple Hardware Test disc that came with your computer and run the extended test. It should at least help give you an idea if it's the logic board and/or video card. It's not 100% failsafe, but worth a shot.

  • Graphics Card Error message...

    Hello,
I am experiencing a recent problem with my newly purchased MacBook Pro. (2.4GHz Intel core 2 Duo)
I have FCP 4.5HD and after transfering it over to my new machine I am unable to launch it. At launch I get the error message: "This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing. -- AGP graphics card. "
It seems to me that there is a graphics card issue, but I would assume that a new MacBook Pro's graphics card would be more than sufficient and compatiable with a highly popular editing program not to mention they are both Apple products.
Would you be so kind as to stir me in the right direction? Why exactly am I experiencing this problem and what can I do about it.
    Many thanks,
    Karchi

This is because FCP 4.5 was designed for the PowerPC processors, and you are using an Intel processor. FCP 5.1 was the first version designed to work on an Intel machine.

    You either need to either:
    1) use the following hack -
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
    or
    2) Upgrade to FCP 6

  • Final Cut Express HD & New I Mac CONFLICT - AGP graphics card error??

Not sure what to make of this. I would imagine this should be as seemless as all of the other transitions I have made with apple. I just bought a new I MAC running 10.5.2 and for some reason when I try to load Final Cut XPRESS HD 3.0, it loads just fine but when i try to launch, an error window pops up stating this software requires certain hardware or software which is missing. * AGP GRAPHICS CARD. And then proceeds to NOT launch the program.
Hmmm??? My graphics card is: ATI RADEON HD 2600 PRO. I had the first IMAC 20"(white body) and loaded the same program on that machine. It worked great.
    Thanks for any help.

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), I think FCE 3 isn't comaptible with IntelMacs. But you may want to ask in the FCE forum - this is the FCP forum.

  • Graphics Card Error

I have a 2009 Mac Pro, and I want to play The Sims 3 on it. The game installs perfectly fine, and it opens the launcher, but when I hit play, and error pops up saying the my graphics card is not supported. So I contacted The Sims 3 and they said my graphics card was 100% supported with the game. I talked to a worker on the phone, and they said to contact apple and I have had no luck. Before conatcting them, I unistalled the game, and reinstalled. Updated my drivers from using software downloaded form Nvidia's website. Still no luck.
Can anyone give me any solutions that could help so I can play my game?

  • Flashing BIOS fixed graphic card error

Hey guys just to let you know I was getting a BSOD. It was STOP: nv4_disp 0x000000EA (0x963F6 D58, 0x84EEA078, 0x00000001).
Obviously this is the nvidia graphics driver and I tried uninstalling my current drivers and reinstalling which made no difference. Altered agp aperture size, agp voltage and memory timings and it all made no difference.
Then I flashed to BIOS version 1.46 and it has cured the problem
Just letting you guys know that if you get this error, try flashing your mobo first before trying anything else.

  • In Edit mode the image gets distorted as if a graphics card error...

When I enter edit mode, many times the image gets distorted and is unrecognizable. The image is covered in red or green lines like when a driver or graphic card is having problems. I can view the image if I use the shift key or exit edit mode.
Have the latest version of both OS and iPhoto. Am considering a complete reinstall of the OS and Software but would like to avoid if possible.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Well you can avoid the hassle of re-installing because it won't help. This is a bug that affects some users of 10.6 and iPhoto, Aperture and/or Preview. Currently there is no solution.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
and let them know that you too have the issue.

  • Catalyst Control Center ATI graphics card error message

This error message keeps popping up:
"The Catalyist Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays Manager."
I have the latest driver and as far as I can tell, it is the only driver it is possible for me to "enable." Why does this message keep popping up and how do I stop it?
    Thank you.

    Uninstall the catalyst control center.
Download the most recent display driver from Lenovo - not from ATI.
    Uninstall the existing display driver.
Install only the display driver - do not install catalyst control center.  It is totally unecessary in this computer, in my opinion.  Both XP and Vista do a simpler job of managing displays.

  • Netflix Graphics Card Error

I have been unable to run the Netflix Win 8 app on my X1CT. The error message relates to the graphics driver. I called Netflix and they said I needed to download the latest graphics driver, which I did and the app still didn't work. Is there something about our graphics driver that is incompatible with this app?

  • T61 and the Intel Graphics Card error - external monitor not detected

T61 with Vista 32 bit, Mobile Intel® GM965 Express Chipset and an Advanced Mini Dock.
I am trying to use the DVI port and an external monitor. The driver does not detect the external monitor.
Uninstalling the Intel driver the Generic profile will work on the external monitor, but is overly fuzzy, how do I get the T61 to recognize my external monitor with the right drivers?
I am currently running the Intel Driver Ver. - 7.14.10.1329, which provides the message under Multiple Display:
Two displays must be connected to the computer before you can use this feature. Please connect another display.
Of course my 22" monitor is connected.  That is the frustrating part.  I have also uninstalled Presentation Director, just in case, but then re-installed after it seemed that wasn't the problem.
There is a newer driver from Intel but it is not Lenovo approved yet I guess. Though I highly doubt this is the problem. What can I do?
    ~~
I did post a thread on the thinkpads.com too, but so far haven't had any luck.

Well the new dock came but didn't fix the problem.  Now my nice new T61 is packed up in a depot box, waiting for DHL to come pick it up.
dkaufman1 -- I guess we do have different problems.  If I set my T61 to display to the DVI port in the bios I get a blank screens on both the DVI connectd monitor and the laptop screen until the OS boots when I have the laptop in the dock.  The only way I can see the bios screen to set it back to the ThinkPad LCD setting is to boot it disconnected from the dock.
I really hope that this problem is resolved, as I really like the T61 otherwise.  I was even using it with the VGA cable connected to my 22" monitor, but it was pretty hard to take.   I'm now back to my old desktop hooked up to the same monitor via DVI and it is quite the relief, even if it isn't as zippy as the T61.

  • HP G62-455TX Graphic Card malfunctioning

Problem is the laptop screen flickered and went off several times, displaying error message that AMD crashed. I reinstalled the drivers replacing the older with the older version and then with the latest version given on the website.
But in both cases, the laptop screen totally went blank not even showing the BIOS screen. I connected it to the external monitor to get the output. It shows a bluescreen dead screen and restarts. However, it boots up on the safe mode (but on a external monitor).
However, The laptop screen is off blank throughout.
I tried booting it up with Linux-Fedora 20 XFCE, but it gave error in loading Radeon graphic card, and it did not even boot up.

I see that the display flickered several times and then displayed a black or blank screen.  You connected an external monitor and on startup a blue screen displays and restarts.
You tried booting into Safe mode but nothing displays on the external monitor.  Notebook display remains blank.
You tried booting with LInux but it also gave the graphic card error.
Here is a link to Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot to assist you.
Here is the HP G62 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide.  You will notice there is no recommended replacement graphic cards.
You would need to replace the motherboard or system board.

  • Replacement Graphics Card: Get 1 or 2?

I'm using Maya 2012 on a 2008 Mac Pro with two ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards in two slots. The set up is 2 Mac monitors and a Wacom Cintique connected to both video cards. I 'think' the Wacom is using one card and the monitors share another.
Question: Do I need to buy two of the same card or can I use a new one for my displays and keep the old one for my Cintique?
If anyone's curious, based on someone's advice online, I am looking at getting the Quadro VCQ 4000 Pro ($780) or the ATI Radeon HD 5870 ($423). I can't use Maya's HQ nor Viewport 2.0 without it crashing with a graphics card error, so I must get a new card. I'm just hoping I don't need two at those prices.

    Apple EFI ROM Quadro only.
A PC card would not work.
