T40 sound not working after motherboard replaced....bad sound card?

Hello,
I recently brought back to life my old t40 2373-75U by switching out the motherboard (it would no longer charge batteries) with a used R51 1830 motherboard (which I believe was a recommended upgrade by someone on this site).
Anyways, long story short - I have the gently used motherboard now installed and the machine is up and running with my old T40 hard drive.  I also have XP-SP3 installed on it, and just had to make a few minor driver updates...everything seems to be working great, EXCEPT I have no sound.
I have tried everything I can think of:
Software:
-un-installing and re-installing the audio driver several times
-installing the 2004 version of the hotkey driver (the 2013 version did not work with my system) because the Access IBM and volume buttons were not working and I thought that might be the culprit
-I believe I updated the BIOS drivers, but not sure if I "flashed" it...admittedly, I don't even know how to do that.
Hardware:
-the hardware in device manager shows that it's working properly
-I've performed the "test hardware" function through the control panel/device manager and it shows a signal with my USB "test" microphone going in and a signal coming out, but still no sound is actually coming out
-lastly, I've tried connecting external speakers to the headphones jack and still nothing..
At this point, all I can think is that the sound card is bad.
Would you agree with this assessment or am I forgetting something?
Thanks for your help.

I'm not familiar with Linux Mint as I have been a Fedora guy for a long time, but since LM7 was
released in 2009, all audio drivers should be present for your machine. But, as I said, that could
be different for LM.
But you shouldn't have to do anything further regarding codecs or anything else, and since the Soundmax
uninstallation also removed the device as well, then it should be completely reset in the OS. Alas, is there
anything from Via in Control Panel - Add/Remove programs? If so, you should remove that before proceeding.
The driver for your machine is here:
Audio driver for Windows XP
And if you already installed this version, the driver can be found @ C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO
I did some rummaging through various forums today in regards to your issue, and found this one,
a couple of R51 users chime in there too.
http://forums.windrivers.com/printthread.php?t=73987&pp=40
and in the above link, a user found a solution by following the advise in this post:
http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/audio-drivers-not-found.14328/#post-184512
But instead of getting the drivers mentioned there, you could point to the installation location I
posted above.
One thing they mention in these threads, is running
sfc /scannow
in a command prompt, which checks your OS for essential system files, but for XP you'll
almost certainly need the Windows XP installation media.
Finally, here is another thread on audio issues for a R51 user:

  • Sound not working after checking for driver updates and resetting bios

I am running a  (HP Pavilion dv7-6c60us Entertainment Notebook PC)
I had muted the sound and did a system upgrad prompted by my HP assistant after logging on.   Now when I try to get sound nothing happens.  So I went out to the support site and checked for driver updates and none were found.  So I then went into my system bios and reset it as stated in a support for sound not working and still no sound.   HOW DO I GET MY SOUND TO WORK AGAIN?

From your models support page Download & Save the latest Audio driver.Go into Control Panel,Programs & Features- Uninstall IDT software.Restart the laptop. After Windows loads, install IDT audio using the downloaded file.

I have one more issue regarding sound, which might be just another bug.
When I plug my headphone, sound doesnt switch to head phone and I cant switch manually too from system preferences. To fix this issue, I have to close the lid and wait for a while for system to sleep and resume system. after resuming, Os starts detecting my headphone. strange!

For those of you reading this just thought that I would update you.  After spending 90 minutes on the phone and resetting/restoring the phone twice, with two different level of tech support they have deemed this a hardware issue now.  This phone worked perfectly fine before the ios 6.1.2 update that was done yesterday.  Worked fine, played music, took calls, did all the sounds, then updated and now nothing!
Our family has 4 iphones, several ipods and 2 ipads.  I am now left with a phone just out of warranty (by 2 mo) and no choice but to pay the $200 to apple to get another phone.  Apparently this is a steal because a new 4s costs $600.! lol.  I am greatly disappointed.  I have been given the corporate phone number and assured that there would be someone in customer service to talk to, but there was not, no surprise to me.  Anyone else have any suggestions?

  • Sounds not working after replacing hardrive

    I am running a
    HP Pavilion DV9700 Laptop
     Product  #  KN876VA#ABA
    Running Windows 7
I cannot find where to check the Sound Option in the BIOS.. When the laptop starts up, I am pressing F10, it goes to the BIOS screen but I cant find where to check the sound settings.
I changed over my hard drive and since then my sound hasnt worked it is saying "No Audio Devices Installed" I installed the Realtech AC97 but it still is not working. In the Device Manager it is showing it is working properly (no yellow signs or anything), but I cannot get the sound to work, so I am thinking the BIOS has something to do with it, I just cant find anything to do with sound.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I got it working by resetting the PRAM.....shutdown, then as soon as you restart the machine, hold the oprion-command-P-R buttons on the keyboard until you hear the second startup tone.

  • Sound not working after reinstall

I have a Toshiba Tecra A8514 and I had to re-install my windows XP  and since then my audio is not working, I have tried to install the audio driver on the site but that didnt work, any help on the matter would be great.

So you installed this driver without success.
Realtek HD Audio Driver for Windows XP
My guess is that you did not install in the correct order. You might want to start over. It's important to install the chipset software followed by the display driver before any other driver.
    --------------------8<------------------- <snip> ------------------
Install them in this order. Restart after each driver and take the time to test between drivers.  Some will apply and some won't.
    Chipset software
    Display driver
    Sound driver
    Modem Driver
If your machine has the internal WiFi card, then install the WLAN driver
    ACPI Common Modules
    Toshiba Console
    Display Hotkey utility
    Touchpad Driver
    Toshiba Power Saver Utility
    Toshiba Controls
    Toshiba Utilities
    --------------------8<------------------- <snip> ------------------
I would restore the hard drive myself. All this stuff is correctly preinstalled. Replacement media can be ordered by calling Toshiba Customer Service at 800-457-7777. Have the computer's serial number and a credit card handy.

  • Handoff does not work after phone replacement.

    Dear all,
I'm using iPhone 6 and Macbook Pro Retina 2014 mid and getting some trouble with using continuity on Yosemite.
Before I use iPhone 5s 16G(IOS 8.1.1)when it was not thrown to the water , continuity does work so well.  But after that, replacing it for iPhone 6, it does not.
I think it could be happen since my previous iPhone 5s cannot be logout from iCloud but i don't know why exactly.
so could you give me some advice for fixing it?
    I'm currently using iPhone 6 (64G)with IOS 8.1.1 (12B436) and Macbook Pro Retina 15" with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1(14B25)
and I also tried to solve this problem with logout/in from iCloud and handoff off/on, rebooting both devices but failed.
The only working function of the continuity is SMS sync.
Could you please help me solve this problem?

I thought I'd post you a quick response because you described exactly the issues I was having. After my phone was idle for a while, my iPhone would refuse to get data over 3G.
I've tested this thoroughly and I'm able to "trip up" the phone into a state where it can't download data from the 3G network. But turning airline mode on for about 30 seconds then off again resets forces a renegotiate with the cell tower/3g and everything seems to work again about a minute later.
Nothing untoward listed in the console at this point either - The PDP context that you mentioned that was deactivated was more than likely the Internet Tethering. (It's usually PDP context 1, by the looks of things).
I think I might switch off 3G and see if that helps until Apple fix this issue. It is related to the wifi issues that others have reported - As I've seen my iPhone unable to download information via 3G if wifi is turned on, but you don't connect to a wifi network. But I can't seem to reproduce this reliably.

  • HP Pavilion DV5000 : Conexant Audio HD sound not working after upgrade XP to Windows 7

On HP support site there are no drivers for Windows 7 for Conexant Audio HD soundcard in HP Pavilion DV5000.
Have tried installing Vista drivers in stead, does not work.
Have tried renaming unzipped Vista files to camcaud.sys & camchal.sys and copied them into Windows/System32/Drivers and reboot, does not work. This is the only solution I found after reading forums for several hours, but does not work.
    Would very much appreciate help.

  • Satellite M100 sound not working after installing Windows 7

Everything else is working after this upgrade except the sound.  Have tried everything.  Any suggestions?
    Many Thanks.
    Rory

    Hi,
For me the case is clear: Windows 7 is not the market as yet and its not released as yet. So I think this is the problem.
Anyway, have you tried to install the driver from the Toshiba website? There you can also find the Synaptics driver. Its for Vista but normally the drivers for Vista are also work in Windows 7. Its worth a try.
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com
Have you tried the key combination FN+F9? So you can enable and disable the touchpad but I doubt that this works. Normally you need the Toshiba utility for this

  • Ipad 2 lock button not working after screen replacement

I replaced the screen of Ipad2. Afterward, the power button is only working when I turn it on or off, but did not work for locking the screen neither with assistive touch. And another issue is when the divece is rebooted, after the apple logo desepears normally we can see the start screen, but in this case the screen stays black after the apple logo desepears untill I pushed the home button. (IOS 7.1.2)
    Please advise, thanks

If you replaced the screen through a 3rd party or yourself, you have void all warranty and support.
If it's a 3rd party or Apple, bring it back.

  • Sound not working after 10.9.4 Mavericks Update - HELP!

My sound does not seem to be working following the latest update to Mavericks (10.9.4). I am running a 2012 Retina Macbook Pro. Sound does not work with speakers, headphones or built-in sounds. Before anyone asks, no its not on mute, I have checked the Audio Midi setup and Sound settings and everything is as they were prior to the update, so the sound should still be working.
I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, no luck yet. Also tried re-installing the update but did not work.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

So I had the same problem; Actually other problems occurred after upgrade 10.9.2 (Thunderbolt related issues) and now after upgrading to 10.9.4 my internal sound disappeared.
    The solutions described above made it worse; Sorry sykosoft .. but your solutions is even dangerous ;
I spend almost a Day finding out how to restore my internal audio devices ..
    So what I discovered, this is a software issue;
Update on update on update without any clean install resulted in some filty .plist files
    com.apple.audio.DevicesSettings.plist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
looking in those files  I discovered some settings pointing towards RabbitEars .. perhaps I tried it once in a previous life but now I do believe the upgrade took by incident the wrong 'device' as standard ..
So I looked up and the only thing I could do was finding .kext and other related stuff .. only able to remove it commando wise = terminal
after rebooting for the 722th time performing a SMC and PRAM for the 666th time the result was ... NO STANDARD devices detected
THe only solution working is :
    A recovery install;
    https://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
In my case I encountered a problem; My recovery failed (reboot press and hold CMD+R, selecting install fresh OS X)
I find out it was due to my FileVault encrypted HD; So first I uncrypted  (switched off FileVault) my HD, and even created a USB recovery disk (not needed)
Tadaaaa 45 minutes later all problems solved, without loosing data or reinstalling all programs ..
*feeling relieved* I thought sharing my pain and solution would save you hours finding out how to repair, hoping PRAM and SMC reset would solve it ..
