T40 video driver issues

My ThinkPad T40 recently had some strange scrambled lines across the screen.  They aren't constant and they don't show up when I switch HD's to my Fedora setup.  It only shows up in the XP setup, and it is red on white, blue on black, and various other colors depending on what is underneath it.
When I formatted the drive, thinking it was a corruption in the windows system files, it had gone away, but when I installed the video driver (ATI Radeon 7500) and rebooted the system, the lines had shown up again.  I uninstalled the video driver, and the lines went away, but Window's plug and play didn't let me stay that way for long as it automatically reinstalled the ATI Radeon 7500 driver.  The lines returned upon a reboot of after the drivers were installed.
I took photographs of the issue.

Sometimes it changes depending on what is on the screen.  It is not always just collected together; as I write this it is all over the screen in more seperated segments.  Is there an older video driver that isn't listed on the website I could use or is there another solution for this?  Thanks a lot.

Your T40 has a classic GPU problem that these machines are known for, where graphic card starts detaching itself from the rest of the motherboard due to numerous heating/cooling cycles and/or chassis strain. Linux doesn't access the video the same way Windows does, and that's why your distro works fairly normal. However, if you kept on pushing the machine long enough into start/shutdown cycles in Linux, you'd see the same behaviour of the video segment.
Motherboard replacement, or solder re-balling/reflowing in the GPU area are your only long-term choices. Placing a couple of post-it sheets on the GPU itself will act as a band-aid.
Good luck.
Cheers,
George

  • Ge force 314.22 video driver issue with new desktop

I bought my Envy Phoenix h9-1340t new from HP in January.  A month and a half ago, I updated the video driver from Nvidia's website and the video card stopped working correctly.  I contacted tech support.  They had me disable all my Windows Drivers and had me run the computer in selective startup.  The video card then worked and they said the problem was fixed.  I told them this did not seem to be a solution to me so they sent me a new video card.  That did not fix the problem.  I was told to send the pc back to HP for a repair.  I just got it back today and I saw the only thing they did was replace the video card again.  I contacted HP and they said the problem was with Nvidia's driver and told me to only update the video driver through HP.  I registered with Nvidia and posted my issue.  The feedback was unanimous, the issue lied with the configuration with my computer and not Nvidia's driver.  Could someone please help me out with this issue?

    Hello again pinktoe.
If using selective startup allowed the drivers to work properly then there has to be something in that list causing you problems.  You need to determine what exactly is causing the issue.  I suggest trying the following.
    Press the Windows+X keyboard combination.
    Select "Run."
    Type "msconfig" and press Enter.
Start by using selective startup to boot without services or startup items.  However, only select one.
Save the changes and reboot the notebook.
If the problem persists go back to msconfig and re-enable the disabled item.  Disable the other item, save your changes, and reboot again to verify that the issue does indeed disappear through this option.
If the issue disappears when disabling the services you'll want to try the following.
    Select the Services tab.
Check the "hide all Microsoft services" box in the bottom left.
    Disable all services.
Re-enable the first 5-10 services, save the changes, and reboot the computer.
If the problem returns then you know it is one of these services and you can continues disabling the enabled services until you find the culprit.
Repeat as needed until the culprit is discovered.
    Post the result.
If the issue disappears when disabling the startup items you'll need to repeat the same process.
Once you determine which item(s) are causing the issue make sure to post the result.
    Have a good day!

  • Premiere 9 crash - video driver issue

    Hi everyone,
I'm using PrE9 and everything was fine until afew days ago, the software would take longer than usual to render and finally crash at 97 -  98%. Yesterday the software displayed an error message when i open a project
I tried to update my display driver, remove and reinstall, still it always shows it, and causes PrE to crash during editing. Is it possible that the version 9 is no longer compatible with the lastest Nvidia drivers ?

    Thanks for that info.
That looks like it would be the latest driver.
I cannot imagine why PrE would throw a video driver error with that.
I normally try to keep several older versions of my nVidia Quadro drivers around, in case a new one breaks something. Lately, the nVidia drivers seem to have all been good, but a couple of years ago, there were two in a row, that introduced some extreme-gaming modules for 3D viewing, and during that time, rolling back to a previous version was the fix. Recently, AMD/ATI has had a couple of their drivers that just did not work with Adobe products.
If you can try a roll-back, to perhaps the driver version right before that one, it might be worth testing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • T40 - IRDA Driver issues

  • T61 Video driver issue when battery ran out

When battery ran out the display goes back to default. I
need to uninstall & reinstall the Nvidia drivers in order to correct the
    issue.
Can you please advise? How to fix it permanently?

    elementx, welcome to the forum,
if you could post your type and model number  and which OS you have this would be a help. If your model number ends in CTO please provide some details about your T61 i.e. which graphic chip. This would help us to help you.
Which driver are you installing, maybe you could provide a link to it?
If you have a factory installation you could try installing the original driver which can be found in C:\swtools\drivers\video.
    Thanks in advance

  • Satellite P300-1FY - BSOD due video driver issue

    Hi,
I've bought this laptop a good month ago to replace my old one that had crashed beyond repair and I've been having problems with the video drivers ever since. I initially hoped the problem would solve itself since I am in the middle of my exams and I really don't have time too much extra time to spend on mending it myself, and I also can't give it back to the store since I need certain software for my exams.
So the problem I think lies with the video drivers for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 graphic card. Whilst I am working on my laptop my screen all of a sudden turns black and my computer freezes (including very unpleasant sound when I'm playing music at the time) an after 5 seconds it flashes back into live and displays a message saying a beelschermstuurprogramma werkte niet perfect en is nu herstela. In English this would be something like s video drivers were not functioning correctly and have now been repaired.
This is of course hugely irritating but it became even more so a couple of weeks ago when I first got a blue screen because of a similar error. Leading me to lose half a hour of work on my laptop. (and as anyone who has ever had exams knows, half an hour is not something you can always afford to lose) I ran the wizard and it sent me to the ATI website to look for drivers.
The inconvenience is that I've been able to find a lot of drivers, but none for the 3400 series. After searching internet for a while I finally found some drivers for these series (or they claimed to be), however this installer was corrupt. I also searched the Toshiba website but I didn't find what I was looking for.
The laptop also freezes from time to time without the screen turning all black.
Could someone help me with this issue?
    Louis-Philippe
P.S.: quality of the keyboard is really bad too

First of all you should post the exact BSOD code and what OS do you use. Then we can search on the Microsoft Knowledge Base for this issue and what is the reason for this.
So please post the BSOD code.
Furthermore I dont understand why you cant find a driver on the Toshiba website. The Satellite P300-1FY belongs to the PSPCCE series and therefore I can find a display driver for XP and Vista. So where is the problem? Maybe you should try to install this driver:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
But before you install the driver, remove the old driver first. Restart the notebook and clean your system with CCleaner. Restart the notebook again and then install the newest version from the Toshiba website.
The display driver on the manufactures website (ATI) doesnt work because its only for desktop cards and not for notebooks. So you cant install it and your notebook is only tested with the Toshiba drivers.
If the new driver doesnt work you should try to update the BIOS too. You can find on the Toshiba page.
    Good luck!!

  • Video driver issue - black screen after XP loads

I've used Bootcamp to run Windows XP on my Macbook for the past year. No major issues up to this point...
Today I decided to update my graphics drivers on XP because I was going to install Starcraft II. I went to Nvidia website and it auto-detected the newest drivers...258.96 to be exact. After installation I restarted computer and booted up in XP again, this time the graphics were all messed up and it wouldn't let me switch to 32bit mode or a high resolution. I re-installed the drivers...booted up again..this time the desktop loaded but the screen was black. I do not know how to remove the drivers and revert to older ones since I can't see anything on the screen. All the sounds work when I start it up and power it down...files still there (can see files on HD when in OSX)...so I know it's just a graphics issue.
How do I revert back to a "more compatible" driver?

    Hi and welocme to Discussions,
use the SafeBoot options of XP as described here http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B315222&x=10&y=11
Use Safe Mode (=Minimal) to startup XP with a minimal set of drivers and from there uninstall the not-working Nvidia drivers.
The reinstall the drivers that worked.
You might wanna tryout if 'Last Known Good Configuration' works.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Has anyone figured out the video driver issue with tx2000?

my tx2525nr is having issues... the screen works great for a bit then it starts to flicker and or go black, then it locks up and gives me a blue screen of death stating the atimag*.* driver is bad..i heard the issues is with the driver not compatible with win 7. so i changed back to vista premium. well it started again after i did all my updates. but worked fine until then... doesnt anyone know what driver to use?

On your iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset and select Reset Network Settings.
This will erase all wi-fi network settings from your iPhone.
If no change after that, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. This will not prevent you from restoring the iPhone from the most recent backup later if no change after this.
If no change after restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, your iPhone has a hardware problem with the wireless card or with something else. The iPhone includes a one year warrranty.

  • Windows 7: graphics/video driver issues

    Hi,
i've just installed Windows 7 pro (oem version) on my macbook pro (unibody june 2009 edition, running Leopard OS) - installation was quick and painless. I made sure to install the boot camp drivers/leopard from the discs within Windows, however win 7 is still unable to detect my NVidia GeForce GT 9600 graphics card.
It's detected instead as a 'standard vga graphics adapter'. I then tried to install the latest driver from the NVidia website, however during the installation process it comes up with an error message stating it 'cannot locate any drivers that are compatible with current hardware' and exits.
Completely stumped. Could anyone help me out?

Problem solved, just a matter of getting my hands of Snow Leopard's Boot camp 3.0

  • Video display issues with Mac Pro and GeForce 7300?

I'm just wondering whether anyone else has experienced any video strangeness with their Mac Pros with GeForce 7300 cards? Basically, twice now I've had the mouse cursor stop responding and the entire screen turn black, then a second later everything's back to normal (with the cursor moving and the display back). I seem to recall a similar issue on my Windows PC with a Quadro FX 1100 card, so I'm hoping it's just a video driver issue.
    Bryan

I am not sure if its the monitor, the MP, or the video card, but, I have had my computer completely replaced after reporting to my local Apple Store about my G5 fans over heating and my monitor either not being able to wake or refusing to sleep. I called AppleCare and did all the normal trouble shooting but they said take it in to store. But now that I have a brand new MP 3.0 I am getting the same issue but no fan noise. I have a 23Cinima HD (the strore said it was fine when they had both my computer and monitor in) but last night after hours of inactivity the monitor had the screen saver on but didn't got to sleep. I then put in to sleep but when I got up this morning I couldn't wake it up. When I got my new computer (3 days ago) I didn't migraite any of my old stuff. I have been slowly reinstalling all my software and updated anything before I install anything else as an added attempt to not have any bad files. I have 2 gig of ram and 500 hd with the 7300 card. I am at a lost I checked and rechecked all my setting. The only other thing I have connected is my airport extreme base.
    Any idea's anyone?
Ops one last issue, I have blown my apartment circut breaker three time while attempting to start the new PM and once it did it when I was trying to wake it just by tapping the space bar. Is it the computer being more power hunger?

  • Mega 180 - Install Video Card or Install Video Driver

I just spent 6 hours at a customer's house trying to fix the Mega 180 I built for her.
As I stated in a previous thread, the machine was working fine and then she experienced the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.  This is when your machine POSTS, loads Windows and just before Windows starts, the monitor goes dead.  Windows still loads and if you remember where icons are on the desktop, you can click them and stuff happens.  The monitor just stops getting a signal.  However, if you hold down F8 during boot and chose VGA mode, you can use Windows in VGA mode.  The monitor being used is a Sony Multiscan200ES.
Once in Windows, if you look under device manager, you'll see a listing of Unknown and under that it lists nVidia GeForce4 MX Integrated CPU.
So, I've tried the following fixes:
    1) Uninstalled all chipset & viideo drivers, reboot, reinstall chipset drivers, reboot, reinstall video driver, reboot.  BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.
    2) Uninstall video driver, reboot.  Windows starts under the generic driver.  I install the video driver, reboot, BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.
    3)  Figuring there had to be an easier solution to this problem, I installed an ATI Radeon 8500 card that I had laying around (I know this card works) figuring that I'll just sidestep the whole video driver issue by not using the onboard video.  Things just aren't that easy because after I installed the card the machine won't even POST.  It turns on but nothing happens.  ARRRR!!!  I try reseating the card, nope - nothing.  I take the card out and use the onboard graphics to make sure everything is ok in BIOS.  I read that if the BIOS detects an AGP card it will automatically disable the onboard graphics but it doesn't seem like that's happening.  So I look around BIOS and there is no way to disable the onboard graphics.  I have it set to boot AGP first, etc. and nothing works.
I guess the last thing I can do is reformat the drive, reinstall windows, and reinstall everything else.  But I don't want to do this because the machine is all set up, been used for a while, and it takes so long to reinstall everything.
My question is this.  How can I either reinstall the video driver so it works or how can I install a video card so it works?  Ideas???

    Quote
I'm going to hunt over at nVidia's website to see if they have a cleaner utility (ATI does for its Radeon drivers - rids the system of every last trace).
nVidia don't need a cleaner utility cos their software is better written!
stab in the dark - the vga lead is connected to PRIMARY vga port?
go to add/remove programs and Remove "Nvidia Display Driver" in Safe mode
restart your computer and it should boot into VGA mode, and prompt with Found New Hardware. cancel this.
the nvidia software will leave the install stuff on your computer, usually in C:\NVIDIA. browse to here and find and run the setup.exe to reinstall the software.
if its been working before, then its probably not a memory issue - it might also be worth making sure the latest nforce drivers (3.13) are installed too.
oh and customers usually WON'T admit to messing around to stuff they shouldn't - in my experience anyway!!

  • Video Driver Advice?

So.. I installed arch and built what I think is the perfect OS, aside from a few minor things.  The biggest problem is that  I seem to use way too much cpu power while watching vids.
For the record, I use the "youtube flash to html5" firefox plugin to watch vids.  When I turn on a vid on youtube and switch to a normal tab, the pc uses about 15% cpu, according to htop, and feels perfectly snappy.
When I switch to the tab with the video, however, everything lags, the cpu usage goes up to between 60% and 90%, and every action seems to take 2 1/2 seconds before the pc reacts.
The pc is really old, so I'm assuming this is a video driver issue.  I did lspci and noticed I have the GEFORCE card and then I saw this other line..

So my question is.. Do you guys think drivers are the problem, or does it have something to do with this iTVC thing?

  • New A03 video driver posted for Venue 11 Pro 7130 - please report any remaining issues here!

We have posted the updated A03 version of the video driver.   If you are having video problems on your 713x, please update to this latest driver ASAP.
    http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=3DTCD&fileId=3390560770&osCode=WB64A&productCode=dell-venue-11i-pro&languageCode=EN&categoryId=VI
This driver fixes most known issues.   Note that there are still several monitors with known persistence issues (e.g. what the monitor does after a sleep/resume cycle).   The plan is to address these in the next driver release.
If you see issues with the A03 driver, please provide information here.   Please see this thread for general troubleshooting steps before reporting issues -> http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/mobile-devices/f/4586/t/19580384.aspx?pi239031352=1#20664209
    Thanks!

i updated the video drive and was really excited when i hooked up my DP to DP and the monitor worked.  Soon after though,  a bunch of issues arised:
    1) When the monitor went to sleep it shut of the tablet as well.
    2) My CPU is now running high (50%-60%) and my cursor has a constant blue circle spinning around
    3) The fan is constantly running,  not high but on.  It did not do this prior to the driver update
The Venue is working in the sense that i am running an HDMI to HDMI monitor off the dock and my application seem to run at the same speed.
Tech support downgraded me back to A02 but the problem still persists.  We are now going to reimage.
