T400 2764-CTO Memory updgrade

Hello,
I am planning to upgrade RAM on my T400 as I am running Win 7 64 bit
Currently, I have 3 GB Ram and am planinng to add a 4 GB Ram such as:
4GB PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 Low-Halogen SODIMM (the plan is to remove 1 ram and swap with 4 GB ram so in total i have about 6 or so...)
My problem is that I don't know what type of RAM it currently has i.e. 1066 MHz or 1333 MHz. Also, I don't know how many DIMMS my laptop have??
Is there any way I can find this information out for my specific laptop without opeining the back of the machine?

The T400 will use either 1066MHz or 1333MHz DIMMs at 1066MHz anyway.

Basically, it's the four palmrest screws, and the palmrest comes off to expose the DIMM slots under the touchpad.

T400 2764-CTO with led backlit. startup or back from sleep, the led backlit won't turn on itself

I have a 4 month old T400 2764-CTO with led backlit.
sometime when I start up T400 or come back from sleep mode, the backlit won't just turn on itself. I can see what it shows on the LCD somehow if the environment is not too bright. Only if I log in and put the system to sleep again and wake it up, the backlit comes back mysteriously.
Is this a setup problem or some defect with led backlit?
I have tried with vista home basic and vista business and both of them have this problem.

What is the acceptable RAM model for T400 2764 CTO (I mean ram BUS number)?

Hi,
I have T400 with the model number 2764 CTO. It has 2*2 GB of ram installed and now I want to add a 4 GB module and remove a 2 GB one.
The problem is that I have the option to get a BUS 1066 mhz or BUS 1333 mhz RAM and I do not know which model will work with my laptop.
Please let me know if you happen to know whether the 1333 works on the laptop or not.

both 1066 mhz and 1333 mhz would work, but they all operate at 1066 mhz speed. That is the speed at which they operate at. I think you should just get the 1066 mhz version.

@ kstrid, mere mortals like you and I can't change the forum. The mods can, and maybe they will. It isn't (very) important. I only mention it since you may want to put future T400 posts in the correct forum for (hopefully) better responses.
Just to confirm what richk said, your processor will run a 64 bit OS: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8600
I'd add to what he said that using virtual machines eats a lot of RAM. If you are doing just "day-to-day" computing, you won't see any advantage to a 64 bit OS and additional RAM. If you are doing heavy computing - or running VMs like I do - more RAM would be a benefit.
It's been pointed out that 32 bit some apps won't run in a 64 bit system. That can usually be handled by running them in a virtual 32-bit environment - XP mode, VMWare player, and others.

Problem hibernate with ThinkPad T400 2764 CTO................

Sorry all because my english is very bad..........
i have a problem with my thinkpad, when i am using my laptop with full battery or using adapter , the laptop auto hibernate, it's like when my laptop low battery,......somebody like me.........help me to fix this problem...

Does it happen only when the computer is idle?
You have some settings in power manager where you can specify that the computer should hibernate when idle for a certain period of time. If set too low it might hibernate pretty fast when you leave the computer idle. If not using power manager there is a similar settings in Windows under power options. You have the options to specify that the computer should hibernate when running on battery, power adapter or you can disable this setting as well to prevent hibernate.
If you let me know the version of Windows you use i can be more specific where to find those settings if that might be the problem.

T400 Dead After Installing 7,200 RPM Hard Drive - Twice! (2764-CTO)

Does T400 have issues/restrictions with non-oem hard drives? My T400 came with a Seagate 5,400 RPM 160GB, after I swapped it with a Hitachi 7,200 RPM 100GB drive, it doesn't boot any more -- only the power indicator is on, and the hard dirve spins, and that's it, no display, no POST, no error beeps, no nothing. I called the service and had my motherboard replaced; at first I used the 5,400 RPM 160GB drive, everything's fine; until I put the 7,200 RPM 100GB drive in -- it died again! The 7,200 RPM drive is totally working as an external hard drive, and also working fine as a system drive in T60p. I called the tech support and they suggested me to send the unit in so they can really figure out the problems, I declined because I have had bad experiences sending my machines out to service facility. At this point I'm seriously thinking to get my T400 replaced; but if this is a common issue that I wouldn't be able to use any 7,200 RPM hard drives other than the ones from Lenovo, then there's no point getting this one at all. Anyway, anyone got any ideas would be much appreciated.

You're having a different issue - your T400 boots as long as you swap the original HD back. In my case my T400 doesn't even POST after I put the original HD back in. I got the technician replaced the motherboard twice, and it finally worked out the second time. However we found another problem: surprisingly, my T400 was actually shipped without the BIOS backup battery (THANKS LENOVO), I had to call the service center again to request it; I got it the 2nd day, and my T400 is working so far so good, with the 100GB 7,200 rpm HD.
So far I haven't heard the non-oem HD compatibility issue on T400. In your case, it looks like your Seagate HD was just not recognized. Try changing the SATA AHCI setting in BIOS to compatible and see if it works that way.

T410 2516-CTO Memory

I have a T410 2516-CTO, Bios Ver 1.34, and Windows 7 64bit.
I would like to expand my memory. I currently have 2gigs, and would like to expand up to 6 or 8. What I can't seem to find an answer to is the max supported memory for my model.

This link is displaying that the T410 model's maximum memory is 8gigs, however searching other sources online I keep reading about how they max out at 6gigs.
Hoping someone with this model has some experience with this and can tell me what the max is.

Your 2nd dimm slot will be tucked underneath the keyboard.
Take out the 1 other screw inside that back panel, flip over the unit and slide the keyboard forwards and pull the bottom side up. (You may need to gently pry it up with a small screw driver)
You'll see your extra slot right front of your nose but hiding underneath some black film.

Replace 5400rpm 320 HDD w 7200rpm 500 HDD on T400 7417-CTO

On the Model listed in the "Subject" field above is there any reason why I can't replace the original 320GB 5400 RPM HDD with a 7200 RPM 500GB HDD. I checked the Lenovo site for my model and it stops at 320/7200 or 500/5400. Does anyone know why the 500/7200 is not on the recommended list? Has anyone installed the 500/7200 on this model? I checked some of the retail drives out there and there are no differences in the power requirements. In one case the power draw was less on the 500. So I'm guessing it's not heat or insufficient power supply.
Also, the pre-installed drive has an 8MB cache, any reason why I can't install either a 16MB or 32MB cache drive?
Some other T400 models have the 500/7200 drive in the recommended list??? The only thing really different about my model is the Hi-brite display. I know it's a power hog, but as I said there doesn't appear to be any additional power requirements with the 500/7200 drive and no pert of this computer gets very hot no matter how intense the use. FYI, I am not a gamer. Does that tilt things back in my favor?? Additionally the video on my unit is controlled by the Intel on-chip 4500, so no extra heat or current draw there. Please help me answer this question. It's important to my work and the software I run.

Short answer; go for it
Long answer; as long as the drive is SATA 2.5" width and 9.5mm height you can use it in your T400. You might notice a difference in power consumption and heat, but that all depends on your usage.

T400 win7 turbo memory issue

I've been running Windows 7 for a couple of weeks now & had only a few minor problems. One that won't go away is the turbo memory issue. I load the 1.10.0.1012-8.9.2.1002 driver and after the mandatory reboot, device manager says it's running fine. Then after every subsequent reboot when I check device manager I get an error code (10) telling me the service can't start. Any ideas? Searched around before posting, but saw no one posting the same problem.
FYI, I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64bit, with a 2764CTO. (and yes the system has turbo memory installed)

Sorta fishing here, but try downloading the latest Win7 driver 8.9.0.1023 for the Intel Matrix Storage Manager from the link I posted above.
This driver is mentioned in the Intel Turbo Memory Release Notes and may be required for Turbo Memory to work correctly.

T400 - 2763 - CTO: Integrated Camera cannot be detected

I have never been able to get the integrated camera to work since i got this laptop. I have tried mulitple attempts to fix it to no avail. I have tried updating the driver, bios, running the lenovo diagnostis, etc etc.
The interesting thing is that the camera seems to be functional. When I test it using the Lenovo diagnostics it comes on and pass the picture and video test!
But neither gmail video nor WebEx can detect the camera...
Device is working property in Device Manager. Driver Version is 5.8.53003.0 dated 8/3/2009 by Sonix
Any help on this is much appreciated.

I tried uninstalling the Sonix driver and installed the Microsoft Driver Version 6.1.7601.17514. No luck.

T400 Screen turns Black/Gray and System Freezes.

My screen turns black or gray and the system freezes.
The only way to fix it is to restart the system by opening all forms of power supply (adaptor and the battery).
Sometimes it works fine for a day or two, sometimes only for a few hours.
I think the problem has something do with my graphics drivers or some other driver from Lenovo.
I have used Lenovo Thinkvantage Toolbox to check for hardware errors and it shows that everything is working fine.
I have updated all drivers but still the problem is there.
I still have warrenty period left.
I bought my system 2 years ago and have never had any problem untill this one.
My system specifications are given below.
Model: Lenovo Thinkpad T400 2764 CTO
BIOS version (Latest?): 3.18 (latest)
OS loaded (ex. Win 7 64bit): Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

My problem seems to be similar. Sometimes my screen also turns black unexpectedly and the notebook freezes completely! In some cases I see a bluescreen of death and in some very few cases it restarts automatically. If it does not restart automatically I have to hold down the power button for some seconds to turn the notebook completely off (so that the "power on led" left to the "battery led" is not illuminated any more). Thereafter it is possible to start the notebook again. So unlike user 400 I do not have to remove any connected power sources.
The issue seems to occur out of nowere and seems not to be related to the use of a specific software. My system is up to date with lenovo drivers and windows update, exept the BIOS, which I updated the system two times since the problem exists since more than half a year!!
I also give my system specifications below:

I use my notebook with AC connected, with battery and most of the time in the advanced mini dock! Since a few days the error never happened when the notebook was docked! So I thought it is a power issue or has something to do with the graphics card.
But now I found out, that the issue might be related to the wlan card! This is because I never had a wireless lan connection when the notebook was docked, since I use a LAN cable. But a few days before I had to use the wlan while my notebook was docked and the error occured after some time. Furthermore, as far as I remember the issue never occured when the wireless lan was switched off and not docked, but I will check that again.
The issue also never occured when I booted windows in safe mode.

Maybe you can check if it is the same for you with your wlan? Maybe together we can find out what the exact problem is. I want to find out what is the problem to get it fixed by lenovo. Until now they alwas said, that they had never experienced such an error.

T400: Replace CCFL lamp or whole LCD?

Hi everybody,
So my CCFL lamp on my T400 has pretty much died. I'm pretty sure it's not the inverter card due to the pink hue towards the bottom & the (lowering) hissing noise before the LCD shuts off. First noticed it would die pretty soon when the screen started flickering on dim settings.
At first I started to look for LCD assemblies (I have the Samsung panel one, LTN141WD-L05) , then told myself-dumb me! why not just replace the lamp (or both, since we there) since my LCD's doing just fine.
But then some people versed in laptops in general (but none had ever changed CCFL lamps before) told me I was better off changing the LCD assembly all together, since replacing the lamps is apparently a daunting & nerve wracking task. I'm not scared myself in replacing the whole LCD-I've change the LCD cover of a previous ThinkPad before and have disassembled this one countless times, including changing the CPU heatsink/fan unit-although never reaching the point of removing the LCD bezel (I did came close, when I had to check the hinges-but that's another story). And then, I don't think CCFL lamps are FRUs, and the HMM sure doesn't go into that territory.
So, my question:
Has anybody ever changed CCFL lamps in a ThinkPad/other laptop? Is there even a guide out there ? (I'm still searching around for one)
Oh, and by the way, yes, my T400 is out of warranty (bought it in 2009, extended warranty expired in 2012)
Another detail: I live in Montreal, Canada, and I'd be happy to have it done by some local shop that would have competence in this. I mention local, because if I had to ship it I think I'd rather buy & have myself shipped a whole LCD unit instead. So I'm supposed to call tomorrow to my local Lenovo service center & a few approved service provider (from Lenovo's website) to inquire about their prices **and** turn-around time (again, if it takes a month I'd do either one of the repairs myself)

Hissing comes from the inverter. Redness from the CCFL. Both must be replaced.
Having changed a CCFL myself on a T30 many years ago I swore never to do it again, and would advise everyone else to just flip the screen or an entire assembly. The chances of introducing dust specs between the LCD layers in the process of swapping the bulb are just way too high for my liking, and that's only one of the problems.
Secondly, Samsung screens are in general a horror show to change the CCFL on, regardless of the generation.
Lastly, T400 panels are rather inexpensive nowadays...

T400 stuck key issue

I bought my T400 2764-CTO in last December, and started using it on mini dock without any problem. Until recently, it starts to show stuck key issue randomly (not always failure) both at boot up or under Windows Vista.
ERROR
0210 Stuck Key FF
Press <F1> to SetUp
Note: the stuck key keeps changing, sometimes 13, sometimes 1F, sometimes other key.
I opened the laptop, and checked the connection of the keyboard but couldn't locate any problem there. Can this be a keyboard issue? Or even a motherboard issue?
Can Lenovo swap a new keyboard for me? If so, what do I need to do then?

You can call Lenovo service, and log a service call, they will make the necessary arrangements. If you are not confident with bios update then please don't do it youself, and let the warranty department do it for you, as any mistakes can make your laptop useless and you will be paying couple hundreds of euros to get the motherboard replaced.

T400 LED screen flickeringly

i bought T400 2764 CTO one year ago just because "thinkpad" name and it strong body and reliable quality;
in the june, just pass one year warrantee period, it screen start flickeringly--i did change adapter, switch the graphical card to internal or ATI again and again, never change the situation, really driving me go crazy, i also connected with desk TFT monitor, it screen showed normal
any one has the same experience on it please?

this is a routine check, i just want to make sure it is your hardware that is having the problem and not some peripheral parts that is giving the problem.
In any case, i think it is a LCD related issue. Do you have warranty still? Flickering issue is related to the LED backlight that is used in your LCD.

T400 Taskbar Autohide ? Problem, ? Normal

Please, some help for a T400 newbie. I am running XP Pro SP3 on a Lenovo desktop as well as a Lenovo T400
laptop. With taskbar autohide enabled on both, the taskbar disappears completely, as expected, on the desktop. On the T400 the upper 1.0-1.5 mm of the taskbar is always seen, even with autohide enabled. Is this normal?

I guess you use a CRT for your desktop... Yes, this is normal. But it's not specific to the T400, this how Windows XP was designed, i.e. to leave 2 pixels of height (@96 DPI) showing when the taskbar is hidden (so you know on which side of the screen the taskbar is.)
