T400 276714U - Graphic card ?

Hello everybody,
Im the new happy possessor of an Thinkpad T400 276714U
My only question is about the graphic card : does he have TWO cards .  ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 (256mb) AND intel GMA 4500MHD or only one of them (in my case the GMA)
The GMA is not fit for 3D special application ?
Is it possible that my second graphic card is disabled ?
Thank you for further answer
Here a screenshot of my card properties and lenovo spec. for the 276714U below

  • Upgrading Graphics Card on T400 Laptop?

    Hi,
I'm just wondering if it is possible to upgrade the Graphics Card on my T400 Laptop. I opened up Device Manager, went to Display Adapters, and it's a pretty weak (so I hear) Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. I would like to upgrade this, because of many different reasons. (One of which includes sometimes having my computer "black out" for a second, then say that some sort of display thing has failed but recovered, and images/videos loading slow, etc..., as well as the main problem of whenever I load something that is graphics heavy, whether it be some imaging assignment or a video game, I hear my computer working extra-hard and a "clicking" noise comes from my computer I think, and I feel like it's because my graphics card is not "good" enough, and I might as well upgrade it if possible).
So yeah, I was just wondering if it is possible to upgrade the Graphics Card on my T400 Lenovo Laptop, and where to buy a new one (if possible).
    Thanks!

    'evening.
there's no "graphics card", per se, in your machine. it's all surface-mount soldered to the planar. even in the case of models that feature switchable graphics, the discrete gpu is soldered (vs socketed) to the planar. so, there's no upgrading that way, sorry.
    regards.

  • T400 Graphic Card Problem

I ordered a T400 on Aug. 11 and the graphic card was ATI mobility radeon 3640 with 256MB. I know its good performance for  HD decode, so I ordered one.
I got my laptop on Aug.28, and I found that the graphic card was changed to ATI mobility radeon 3470 with 256BM.
I called lenovo yesterday and was told that the two cards, 3640 and 3470, are same. But I do not think so, my major is computer graphics and I really know the difference between them. The following websites can proof that:
    http://ati.amd.com/products/Radeonhd3600/specs.html
    http://ati.amd.com/products/Radeonhd3400/specs.html
Today, I called lenovo again, and was told that, there are never ATI 3640 available for T400, and he had checked my order confirmation and said that what I ordered is ATI 3470 and I made a mistake. But I do not think so, my order confimation can proof that:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/zwleopard/LenovoProblem/photo#5240050176820755010
Why my order confirmation is different from that of lenovo  ?
Why I got two different answers from lenovo ?
From the whole process, I feel I was cheated and fooled.
What should I do next? I really dislike ATI 3470, it's awful. Anybody can help me ? thanks...

    Another problem:
I used three softwares, 3DMarks06, CPU-z and EVEREST, to check the info of memery, and found that the style is DDR2 not DDR3, why ? And its frequency is 667MHz not 1067MHz.

  • T400 Graphics Card Trouble

I am having the same error occur with my graphics card in the T400 multiple times.
It goes into an infinite loop, and then goes to blue screen, saying that the graphics card has gone into an infinite loop and the system has been shut down for protection ect...
Is it possible that this is due to overheating? the T400 always seems to be very hot when this happens.

the heatsink/heatpipe associated with the GPU is located under the keyboard, so if you take off the Keyboard then you should be fine. However, don't remove the heatsink assembly, as this will void your laptop warranty.

  • T400 Graphics Card question

My parents got me a new laptop (T400) for Christmas it has the Intel graphics card in it but I have theATI Mobility Radeon HD3470 Graphics card. Can I just swap them out or not? I would really like to use this card as I feel it is better just looking for some help on what to do.  If I can swap it out it would be great I do know how to change it out or should I have Lenovo do it for me since they got all the onsite warranty and stuff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Nomad

    Hi NomadA32,
    Welcome to the forum!
It is not possible to swap out or replace graphics card on T400, the graphics chip is part of the motherboard. There would in fact be only few handful of notebooks in market that have user upgradable graphics modules.
    Hope it helps.

  • Speaker problem with t420i and adding a new graphics card question

I bought a t420i about a month ago and noticed that the speakers could not properly handle muliple sounds at once.  What happens is that, say in a music video, the music plays loud and clear, but once the lyrics start the background music fades a bit to about 85% of it's original volume.  I had returned the laptop because of this problem but the replacement I got has the SAME exact problem.
In case im not clear, try this example.  You know the beeping noise you get when you press an incompatible set of keys?  ( like g, h, and b).  When I have this noise going simultaneously with a song, the song's sound fades a bit.
This does not happen with headphones, therefore i believe the problem is with the way the speakers are programmed.
Also, if I bought a t420 with just integrated graphics, could I still add a new graphics card?  Or can you only add a new graphics card to a thinkpad that initially comes with discrete graphics?

I think the main purpose of the nvs4200m is the ability to use three displays (internal + 2 external). Additionally, nVidia has better driver support for games so even though it is around the same speed, the drivers are better.
The shared ram is still used, unless you disable the HD3000 in the BIOS and run with only the nvs4200m at all times.
When asking for help, post your question in the forum. Remember to include your system type, model number and OS. Do not post your serial number.

  • Brightness unadjustable for "High Performance" in Switchable Graphics Card Technology

    Hello,
I have just transitioned to Windows 7 Professional on my Thinkpad R400(2787-A31)
However, after installing the Thinkpad Switchable Graphics Card driver, i am unable to adjust my brightness if i am using the High Performance mode. My laptop comes with ATi Radeon 3470 and Intel GMA 4500MHD.
I have already installed most of the drivers, and after some testing i realised that it was the switchable graphics driver that cause this problem. Before installation of this driver, i was on the ATi Radeon all the while and i can change the brightness.
I hope some one can help me with this driver issue. My installation of the drivers was from the support page. All except the PCI Simple Communications Controller has their drivers.
    Solved!

    Rosemars,
Thank you very much for solving the problem.
The key solution lies with the BIOS update. For people who cannot get the tool to work(mine keep giving an error message), there's an alternativie BIOS update utility at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70351
This is for R400 and T400s, for other models please select your model number at the Support page and find the utility.
    Cheers & Thumb Up!

  • T420s Nvidia Graphics Card & Express Card Questions

Hello, and thank you for checking out my post.  My apologies for writing a book, but I'm hoping to give as much detail as needed the first go round.
I just received my custom-built T420s (4170-CTO) and have a couple technical questions/concerns about it.  The details of my configuration are located at the bottom of this post.
First off, one of the deciding factors of my purchase was the discrete graphics card.  On the T420s I chose NVIDIA NVS 4200M Optimus Graphics 1GB, Intel Core i7-2620M Processor.  I was thrilled to have more than 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory for my games.  Upon receiving my laptop, though, I ran the Windows Experience Index and saw that the lowest score was the graphics card, which is identified as Intel HD Graphics Family and has 64 MB of dedicated graphics memory.  After my heart started beating again I checked Device Manager and found under Display both Intel HD Graphics Family and NVIDIA NVS 4200M listed as working with up-to-date drivers.  When I configured the laptop online there was no mention of hybrid graphics, so I'm not sure why I have an Intel Graphics card on the machine.  My current laptop that I was looking to replace is a T61p with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics card, and only that NVIDIA card is shown under Device Manager and in the Windows Experience / Performance Information.  Thinking that perhaps disabling the Intel card would cause the NVIDIA card to take over, I disabled that through Device Manager.  My screen went black and after feeling quite stupid I rebooted my computer.  The default Windows Display driver kicked in, allowing me to see well enough to get back to Device Manager and enable the Intel Graphics.  I counted myself lucky that I wasn't stuck with a working computer with a blank screen, but I'm still confused about why the NVIDIA card isn't the only display adapter on the machine, and why it isn't the default/main adapter.  Most importantly, will it be usable to run my games?
My second question is regarding the PCI ExpressCard slot.  My aim for this machine was to have a HDD to store my data (I selected the 320GB 7200 RPM HDD) and a SSD to boot and run my programs from.  Another reason for choosing this machine was the comment on Lenovo's site stating that a user booted his T420s from a solid state drive in the PCI ExpressCard slot, which was exactly was I was looking for.  I need the CD/DVD drive, so I can't put the second hard drive in a caddy.  During configuration I chose the option for an Express Card Slot & 4 in 1 Card Reader & Smart Card Reader.  From what I can tell, the Express Card slot is not connected to the Card Readers and I will not lose use of those ports.  When I opened the computer up to install more RAM, I saw what is labeled in Lenovo's hardware manual as the Express Card slot, apparently empty - which is great!  Now I need to figure out what kind of SSD to look for, and on that I'm kinda lost.
I'm guessing that my ExpressCard slot is 34mm and PCI form factor rather than USB... but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a not-incredibly-educated guess.  I'm also not sure where mSATA comes into play for me, if at all.  Looking at SSDs on sites such as newegg.com, I'm unsure of what form factor to choose - ExpressCard, PCI-E, mSATA, and/or 1.8"?
The tech specs of my configured T420s (copy/pasted from the order status) are as follows.  I hope this means more to you than it does to me.

2nd generation Intel Core processor family PCI Express Conroller - 0101
Whew.  Thanks for making it through my book-long post.  If you can offer advice on either of my questions/concerns I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Lauren

The T420s with Nvidia GPU has two graphics card that can switch on the fly, if you only want the discrete gpu, just go into your bios menu under graphics there is an option to select discrete.
With the Nvidia Optimus (which is what you have), it can switch between Nvidia and Intel GPU depending on your application needs. This will allow you to conserve battery or power.
Expresscard slot 34 mm slot is occupied by the card reader that you ordered.
What you are talking about within the ram slot cover, is the mPCIe slot, which can be occupied by a mSATA drive.

  • W500 switching graphics card

Hi, so on my w500 laptop specs, it says that it has 512 MB ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 graphics card that is switchable to Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD. I want to switch to the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator but I can't seem to figure out how to do it- I was told it was easy, but I'm not having much luck. If anyone could help me, that would be awesome, thanks!
    Solved!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Which OS are you using? The switchable feature only works in Win Vista and 7.
    Maybe this will help:-
"How do I tell the system to switch my graphics adapter?
To switch graphics adapters, left-click on the ThinkVantage Power Managerbattery icon in the system notification area. At the bottom of the pop-up menu there will be a Switchable Graphics sub-menu.
Note: Changing ThinkVantage Power Manager from Basic mode (default) to Advanced mode will cause the menu to look different. The menu will no longer be transparent and the slider is replaced with a list of schemes. The Switchable Graphics sub-menu is still at the bottom."
    See the support page:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70495.html

  • T420 how to turn on graphic card

    Hi,
I was experimenting with configuratition in windows 7 and I turnd off graphic card. Now when i turn on t420 the screen is black from start up. I was trying to enter bios with f1 but the screen is all black too. How can i turn on graphic card so i can see something on laptop monitor.

What you are asking is how to turn on the internal display.
Please let us know what you did to turn it off.
You can try turning off the computer and unplugging any cables (VGA, Display Port) that go to external graphics devices. Then turn it back on. If that doesn't work, try Fn+F7 and see if that does anything. Don't mash on it as it can take a few seconds to respond.

  • T400, Switchtable graphics problem, windows 7 64 bit

    Hello everybody.
I buy a new T400 with switchtable graphics. I install a clean windows 7 64 bit professional version. I install system update and check the required apps and drivers. Everything is done, but after the reboot, I switch to intel graphic card and the screen is bouncing really hard. I switch back to ati evetrything is ok. I check if is use a lower resolution or lower refreshing rate the intel is working well. What is the problem? At the device manager everything looks like good.

  • Geforce 8800m graphics cards

When will thinkpads feature the geforce 8800m graphics card? For now only the quadro fx570m can be found in T-models, and that is many times slower than the 8800 one.

    Who said they ever will?
Thinkpad T series are meant to be pro machines, so they'll probably stick to the Quadro line of graphics chips for those who want to do CAD or digital content creation. Hence, you might never see any consumer GeForce model in a T series Thinkpad.
According to ThinkWiki, the next generation of Thinkpad T's (T400, T500) is based on ATI Radeon graphics anyway.

  • T410 - Switch between graphics cards

    Hi,
    i just bought the T 410 (2522-3FG).
Despite the fact that it was advertised there is no option whatsoever to switch between the Nvidia discrete graphics card and the gpu of the i7-processor.
Yes, i have installed the powermanager (version 3.12) but the option is missing.
Furthermore i read in various forums that the information that this laptop comes with the ability to switch between discrete and integrated graphics is a hoax.
So my question is: will there ever be the option to switch between the different graphics cards? Will it somehow be implemented by software updates or will it never work?
    Best regards from Germany,
    earth2

I'm not sure you're missing much.  The battery run-time loss since I "switched" my T400 to Win 7 has been very frustrating.   So far there hasn't been any hint that Lenovo is doing anything about it.
Without some tap-dancing with power manager after each reboot, the switchable option is using more power than either discrete or integrated alone.  Sometimes it cuts run-time in half.  Even after the tap-dance it still uses more juice than it used to.  This stuff used to work.
Enought about me - how do you like your machine otherwise?  I'm quite pleased with the T400 post-Vista, and holding onto the hope that the graphics driver will eventually be fixed.

  • T400 switchable graphic problem

    Dear Jhem,
The model of T400 I have is 2768-AA6.
I have some questions on the switchable graphic card function:
1.Under device manager are we suppose to see two GPU installed or just the active one? I can only see the active one. But most ppl around me who have T400 can see both two GPU. Is there anything wrong with my machine?
    2. The automatic hot switchable function is not available at all. I remember the switchable function is that when we use battery the computer can choose integrated graphic card while when we use AC adaptor the computer can switch to discrete graphic automatically. However, no mater what power source I use to power up the computer, the integrated graphic card is selected. The only way I can use ATI graphic card is get into BIOS----->disable switchable function------->select discrete graphic card and then restart computer.
Are these common problem for T400? They make me very unhappy as the most attractive function of this model cannot be use at all.
    Thanks a lot!

    Anyone can help?
    Thanks!
