T400 and blurry external monitor (ThinkVision L2251x)

Connecting my T400 (Windows 7) to my new Thinkvision L2251X montior through the VGA cord supplied with the monitor results in poor quality display, when connected either directly or through the advanced minidock. I have not had this problem with my previous display (Thinkvision 1951). I have checked to be sure that the t400 output is set for 60 hz and 1440 x 900 (the preferred "native" resolution that matches the monitor). I have spent a month trying a variety of options including other resolutions and changing the dpi, but nothing improves the display. I'd be grateful for any suggestions!

you would need to get either a Lenovo usb2dvi or advanced mini dock to get DVI connection. Otherwise you would need to get something like matrox dualhead digital edition to get vga to dvi conversion.

T400- make the external monitor primary problem.

I use T400 and Acer p223w monitor.
From some reason I cannot make the external monitor to be the primary monitor.
Using the Presentation Doctor I have the option to define the external monitor as the primary but when I test it, it says that I have illegal parameters of color depth and resolution.
The problem is that the parameters I use are the parameters currently defined on the two monitors (which mean the monitors have no problem working that way).
Any other color depth resolution combination won’t solve the problem.
On the other hand using the same parameters if I configure the laptop monitor to be the primary everything works just fine.
Any idea what causing it and how to solve it will be highly appreciated.

Since I have a German Windows client I can only guess the wording on the english client, but try the following, which worked on my T500:
Bring up the mobility center by pressing Win+X
Click the button to connect an external monitor
Choose to use the external monitor as the only display
Now that the external monitor is the only display, it is also primary of course. Now you can use the normal windows display dialog (Right-Click on desktop -> Configure -> Display) to extend the desktop to the internal display which will be secondary then
done
In my case windows remembers this configuration and you do not have to do these steps again after reboot or when you reconnect the external monitor.
Hope this helps for the T400, too.

After a frustrating evening with a blurry external monitor I found the fix at link above. Very happy!

First, what you said is contradictory. You say "can't get a video signal", then say"the Mac wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible". "No video signal" means an absolutely black,blank screen. It sounds like you have plenty of signal.
I am supposing what you are seeing is actually a blank desktop, which is to be expected if your settings are such that you are extending the desktop, instead of mirroring it.
Within the preference panes is a setting that allows you to change this. Open System Preferences, click Displays, and then click Arrangement. You will see that you are extending the desktop. Change that setting.

Upgraded to Yosemite and Windows 8.1 Pro in Bootcamp, can no longer drive retina display and two external monitors simultaneously?

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion and Windows 7 Ultimate (Bootcamp) to Yosemite and Windows 8.1 Pro on a late 2012 MBP 13" Retina. Prior to the upgrades, I was able to drive the retina panel and two external monitors simultaneously when operating directly in Bootcamp. Now, I can only drive 2 of the 3 simultaneously though all three are recognized under Graphic Properties. I simply cannot find any option or profile under Graphics Properties or Options or Personalization to run all three screens.
My hardware hasn't changed and this worked prior to the updates. I have no issue on the Mac OSX can run all three. I also have no issue doing it in Windows under Parallels Desktop 10. It is just when I boot directly into Bootcamp that this happens. What am I missing?

Great point, Loner T. It was late when I was working and I thought about this afterwards also.
The issue was that in Windows=>Control Panel=>Display, under "Change Display Settings", the three screens showed but "Extend Display" was not selected for one of the screens. It was simply off. I can't believe I danced around this w/o picking it up sooner. In fact, it has happened in the past that for some reason a display loses this setting.
As an aside, thanks again for all of your help and terrific input to upgrade both the Mac and Windows operating systems. As I was going from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8.1 Pro, one thing I did come across that made life much easier was to upgrade first to Windows 8 so I could keep my apps. The jump from 7 to 8.1 would otherwise migrate my personal files, but not programs and require a lot of time to reinstall all. This was completely avoided by going to Windows 8 first.

X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

Let me start by saying that the internal and both external monitors work simultaneously. However, getting to that state is the problem.
I can boot successfully with the laptop in the dock with 1) just the internal monitor, or 2) the internal and one external monitor connected.

If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

Blurry External Monitor

I have a Gateway FPD2485W external widescreen monitor connected DVI. In the past week or so I've noticed that even at its native resolution 1920x1200 the screen and text look blurry (in fact, red text looks downright bleeding). I've tried different resolutions, tweaking the monitors own settings and nothing seems to work. In addition, I can no longer get the external monitor to work with the MBP lid closed. Can this be related to 10.5.2 and/or the graphics update? If so, how do I downgrade either?
A $600 monitor on a $2000 laptop should not look like this!

T400 Windows 7 External Monitor issues

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this; however its worth a shot after trying for the past 48 hours to figure this out.
I took the hard drive out of my wifes gateway laptop that had Windows 7 on it and put it in my T400. After it booted up and all of the drivers got installed everything worked fine except the external monitor (It wont recognize it at all).
In the device manager I am getting a code 12 for the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family. I have pretty much exausted all of the options I can think of and nothing seems to work. Anyone have any ideas what this issue is or how I can resolve it to use an external monitor? The device manager is also showing errors for PCI Serial Port and PCI Simple Communication Controller (not sure if any of these are related to the issue)
Again, sorry if this isn't the right place for this and thanks for any help!

Hi mrosenello, welcome to the forum,
my guess is that Windows installed generic drivers and not everything is 100% as it should be. I'd like to suggest that you download, install and run ThinkVantage SystemUpdate which should hopefully then install all the correct drivers you need.
Please give it a go and let us know how you get on.

Problem with T61 and DVI External Monitor (via Advanced Mini-Dock)

Ever since I upgraded to Vista SP1 on my ThinkPad T61 (with an Intel integrated 965 series graphics card), I've been having problems when I try to use an external monitor via the DVI port in my Advanced Mini-dock. I'm curious if other people have experienced this problem.
The problems surfaces when I first boot up, or sometimes after my ThinkPad has been running for awhile (particularly when I do something graphics related, such as right-clicking to open display properties). The picture starts to flicker (or disappear and reappear, like the screen does when changing graphics resolutions). I also hear the "ba-bum" sound that you hear when disconnecting a piece of hardware, followed by the "bum-ba" reconnection sound - these two sounds happen repeatedly (sometimes as fast as once per second). If I don't do anything, sometimes I'll get a bluescreen.
Not long ago, I found a fix of sorts: to stop the flickering/reconnecting, I just open Task Manager and stop the process called "igfxpers" (an Intel driver problem). The problem always disappears after I do this, although I have to remember to do it every time I reboot or else the problem comes back. So it's not an ideal fix.
This problem doesn't happen when I connect an external monitor using the analog VGA port, or when I'm just using the notebook LCD. It's limited to just the DVI connection. I've tried two different digital monitors (one LG, the other BenQ) as well as two DVI cables - the problem is still the same. So it seems like a driver problem of some sort - unfortunately, the Intel drivers haven't been updated since last February.
I should also note that I've tried reinstalling my OS two or three times, and the problem always comes back. Has anyone else had this problem, and is a fix on the way?

You will see this on an otherwise blank screen. Assuming that the data cable is plugged in correctly, the video card is feeding the monitor a signal stream in excess of what the monitor can accommodate. The two main causes for this are that the user has set either the resolution or the vertical frequency rate too high. For example, you might set a new graphics card to display at 1,280 x 1,024, but if the monitor is only capable of 1,024 x 768 resolution, you’ll get a Sync Out of Range error. This is especially common in 14-inch monitors.
Solution:
Because you obviously can’t make settings changes from within regular Windows, you’ll need to reboot into Windows Safe Mode. When you restart the system, there is a point during boot up when the system switches from reporting diagnostics and detected components to loading Windows. This point is usually accompanied by a beep and the screen going black. Just before this point, you want to start repeatedly pressing the F8 key. This should bring up a menu of Windows boot options. The one you want to pick is Safe Mode.
From Safe Mode right-click the Desktop and select Properties. Go to the Settings tab and use the slider to drop your resolution a notch or two. Reboot and let Windows try to go into Normal mode. If this still doesn’t work, go back into Safe Mode and get to the Settings tab of Display Properties. Click the Advanced button, go to the Monitor tab, and check your refresh rate. The lowest advisable rate is usually 60Hz, although this works better for LCDs (liquid-crystal displays) than CRTs (cathode ray tubes). Apply the change and reboot.

Latest MacBook Pro 15" and two external monitors?

I currently already have two Dell U2713HM monitors and was looking to purchase one of the latest model MacBook Pro 15" laptops. I was wondering if there would be any issues in connecting the two monitors via the two Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort connections on the laptop and achieving a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels on each external monitor?
I was specifically looking at using one of the Henge Docks (http://hengedocks.com/pages/vertical-macbook-pro-retina#2) to connect the laptop to the monitors. And the Henge Dock states that it has Mini DisplayPort connections on it. Does the dock convert the Thunderbolt port to a Mini DisplayPort connection, or can you plug Mini DisplayPort connections directly into the Thunderbolt ports anyway?

Compatibility between macbook pro and an external monitor

hi, i have a macbook pro retina 15'', with intel iris pro graphics 5200 and windows 8.1 .
i try to install an external monitor (http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?slg=en&scy=pl&ctn=17S4SB/00) with mdp - vga adapter but the resolution it is very bad and it is impossible to calibrate.
i install the driver of the monitor and the new driver of intel iris, i try every resolution but in the external monitor also 1680x1240 it's too big.
instead with os x, also 1280x1024 (recommended resolution), can be seen perfectly.

Then I would try connecting your display in the off state and then turn it on once your MBP is sleeping. It's possible the MBP, or display in fact, is getting confused.
Also, always be sure your MBP has actually made into sleep by the pusating sleep indicator light. If it isn't pulsating it isn't sleeping.

Bootcamp 2.0, Win XP 32bit and beamer / external monitor activation

My system: MacBook (NOT Pro, Core2Duo, with 10.5 Leopard and Bootcamp 2.0 with Win XP Pro 32bit SP2) and Mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
Working on Leopard connecting my external monitor (Fujitsu-Siemens P19-2) is working perfectly. It is automatically detected and activated.
When I connect the monitor on Win XP, the desktop and tasbar flicker/are reloaded, i.e. ANYTHING is detected. However, the monitor is black and says "No signal" and i cannot activate it. I considered/tried:
- the Windows way: FN + F7 => did not work / is deactivated and tools like Input Remapper didnt work (written for Macbook Pro only afaik)
- the 2nd Windows way: Display Properties, Settings => any changes without effect
- via Bootcamp / GMA Driver Properties: no possibility to activate 2nd monitor: Note at "Display Devices"-menu: "Two displays must be connected to the computer before you can use this feature. Please connect another display."
Therefore my questions:
- any solution i did not consider?
- is it a bootcamp / driver issue to be solved in bootcamp updates?
- is there a keyboard tool similar to inputRemapper for Not-Pro-Macbooks? (To activate not only FN+F7 but also Del and PSC)

Thing is, I am trying this too. However, the only option I get is to clone the display. This is not what I want, I want to use the TV as the primary display. This way games will startup on the big TV and not on my Macbook Pro. Now I don't get the option to use that TV as a primary display.
So leaves me with the option to clone the display and have same image rendered on both screens... This is NOT what i want. In Leopard everything works great... obviously...
PLease let me know if you got any solutions for this

Macbook with bad display and an external monitor

Since the Macbook's display is broken and unusable I thought I might still be able to use it as a desktop connected to an external monitor. The monitor is an Insignia 19" and I'm getting a "mode not supported" error. I've tried many different things based on what I've read in the forums. There were some suggestions that I should change the display resolution but I can't get to that point to read it.
Any ideas?

Hi dj1111,
You can try using the machine in clamshell mode to see if that works. It'll involve connecting a USB mouse & keyboard or a Bluetooth mouse & keyboard with the lid closed and the monitor connected. Given the fact that the internal display doesn't work, I'd recommend the USB option because if you have to manually pair the Bluetooth peripherals it'll be a bit trickier.

MBP and 2 external monitors

I have 15" MBP 2.2 w/4G ram that I bought in july. I want to hook up a 2nd external monitors(already have one up and running).
I need more screen space as I do alot of video editing. I dont want a mirror, I would like to have 2 19" monitors to work on.
My question is this, what is the best way to add a second monitor? Y-splitter? Will this just mirror ont he2nd screen? or something wlse?

Win7 And 2 External Monitors

I'm having an issue with my 2 external displays in my late 2013 MacBook Pro using Windows7 ( i7-4850HQ @2.3GHz, 16GB Geforce 750M).
Until yesterday I was able to use them as 2 external monitors. One connected with HDMI the other with the miniDisplay Port. My MacBook's display served well as a third monitor.
Today Windows won't accept more than 2 displays and quits all changes to the settings without being able to save.
Anyone experienced that before? I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything. So that this might have occured with an update...
Any clue?
