T400 Dual Monitor Recommendation

Hi all,
I want to use dual monitor with additional LCD monitor.
But I do not know much about dual monitor resolution setting.
Can I ask if this monitor works well with T400 as an additional extension display?

There have been problems with 1600x900 monitors on Thinkpads - supposedly a BIOS fix in the works.
I would go after a more standard 16x10 ratio. Also, will you be using the VGA port, or DVI from a base station?

  • T400 dual monitors to standard display switch?

    Hello...
I have a T400 I bought in August 2009 running Windows XP. When I am home, I use my T400 in conjunction with a second dual display that acts as an extended desktop. I also like to take the laptop with me. The problem is that every time I return home to connect my external screen, I have to go through this whole process in Catalyst Control Center to configure the extended display, along with its respective resolution, which monitor is primary and secondary, etc. On another laptop, this process happens automatically, detecting the monitor correctly. If this can't be done automatically, could someone please walk me through how to set this up so it can be seamless? It seems like this should be very easy but I can't figure it out for the life of me!
    Thanks for any help.
    Best wishes,
    Mavec

As far as completely automatic, you may or may not be able to have a reliable experience. BUT the good news is that the Thinkpad Presentation Director utility can make this a "one click" choice rather than completely reconfiguring your displays every time you reconnect.  The utility should already be installed on your machine, most likely in the Thinkvantage section. If it is not, just go to the Lenovo site and in the support section for your machine you can download it. Once installed just run through its wizard to set your displays for the way you want them (resolution, primary, extended etc) and it will have you give that a name- from then on when you connect at home you just click on the icon in the taskbar, select that named profile and you are done. Really works quite well and is pretty painless.

  • T400 dual monitor question

I have a ThinkPad T400 with two "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family" display adapters listed in the Device Manager. I was wondering if it was possible to connect two external 1600 x 900 monitors to this laptop via an Advanced Mini Dock (obviously turning off the laptop screen) or whether I needed a different chipset to support this? Thanks!

yes you can but i am not sure whether this resolution is supported.

  • Dual monitor recommendation for 2 floors? [SOLVED]

I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to go about setting up X so that I can toggle it between floors of my house.  I currently have the computer on the main floor, hooked up to a monitor and keyboard there.
What I would like to do is also connect the computer to a TV and wireless keys in the basement (AKA play games on a giant screen ).  I want to avoid making the screen span across the monitors would be typical if 2 monitors sat side-by-side, because if I accidentally toss a window on the wrong screen, i have to go to the other floor to figure out where it is and put it on the other screen.  And that way any games or whatever would not be half upstairs and half downstairs.
I use the nvidia driver (so maybe if there is a way that twinview can do this...?).  First floor monitor is 4:3.  TV in basement is widescreen.  My plan ideally would be to make a script that would call xrandr (or something like that) to toggle between floors. That way I can just press a button on the keyboard to switch location.
My thought is that since I can only be on one floor at a time, it would turn off one screen and put everything on the other screen when I toggle, rather than doing some sort of extending across 2 screens.  Kinda like if you take a laptop and hook it to a docking station and it shuts off the laptop's screen and uses a bigger monitor instead of the laptop's screen.  That way I can start something on the first floor, then switch and continue it in the basement.
Any thoughts on the best way to go about this?  This is my first time playing with multi-monitor setups (although I'm looking more for a toggle between them that changes the resolution to match the different aspect ratio of the screens, rather than extending the monitor across 2 screens).
Oh, and to complicate things, the monitor (which is on the first floor) has bad EDID, so I had to put in some modelines and tell it to ignore the EDID - this works fine on its current single-monitor setup.
    Thanks in advance!

OK   I am now posting this using a 55-inch tv as my monitor
I did decide to go with ngoonee's twinview method rather than setting it up for independent consoles, for reasons mentioned earlier.  Getting rid of "Clone" helped and my next step is to put together a quick script to toggle when i press the magic button on the keyboard.
One minor note is Conky doesn't reseat itself automatically with the screen change, so I will just kill and restart it in my toggle script.
One major note is that setting it off of "Clone" was not enough to stop the panning behavior when I first bring up X.  This is what was happening:
    X starts
X sees that the TV has a big resolution, so it decides to make a big virtual area to match.
X sets the metamode (as it should) to initially use the 1280x1024,NULL mode (just using the regular monitor, not the tv).
    KDM starts up at 1280x1024
The screen now pans to a bunch of garbage outside of that area when i move the mouse towards the edge.  This is because of that giant virtual area, even though KDM is in the smaller 1280x1024 area.
To fix this, I needed to make xrandr set the resolution before kdm starts.  So I added "xrandr -s 0" to the file /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup
This causes X to execute xrandr prior to KDM startup.  This fixes it from panning around a giant virtual area.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions - I think I have a better understanding of this now

  • I have 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute?

I just bought a 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute any work at all?  I read where on a PC they would work together, but on a MAC they do not.
I read that Display Port has higher band width than DVI, NEC monitors for best performance they recommend using DIsplay Port.
When I was setting this up I looked at a Nvidia Quadro 4000, unfortunately it was for PC, it had 2 Display Ports, in the Mac version they reduce it to one.  I did not think there could be a difference.
Mainly want to use it for CS6 and LR4.
    How to proceed???
I do not want to use the Quadro 4000 for both, that would not optimize both monitors, one DP and 1 DVI.  Using just the 5770 would work but I do not think the 4000 would be doing anything, and the 5770 has been replaced by the 5870.more bandwidth.
Any ideas, I am a Mac newbie, have not ever tried a Mac Pro, just bought off ebay and now I have these problems.
As a last resort I could sell both and get a 5870.  That would work, I'm sure of that, it's just that I wanted the better graphics card.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • DUAL MONITOR BUG: One Picture – One Monitor – Different Colors!

There have been several threads discussing that Photoshop CS4 and OS 10.6. show wrong colors in dual monitor setups.
The first one to prove this with a screen capture was jb510-LJ0JJQ in August 2009: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2207312#2207312
Eight months and three OS updates later the problem is still there and makes professional work with more than one monitor a nuisance.
Here's another actual example: A picture and its 100% identical copy showing different colors on one screen!
Here's how to repeat it – try this at home ;-)
    1) In the finder make a copy of a rgb picture.
    2) Open one of the two identical pics in photoshop.
    3) Drag it to the other monitor.
When releasing the mouse button you may see the bug already: the colors will "switch".
    4) To verify this go to system presets - monitors - and change the primary monitor (by dragging the menu bar to the other)
    5) Now open the identical copy you made in step 1) and see the difference!
Here's a synopsis of suggested workarounds:
    1) disable open GL (which seem to makes no difference on my setup)
    2) click "desaturate monitor colors" but set desaturation to 0 (which prevents visual switching in step 3) (only if openGL is ON) but also leads to a wrong display in step 4+5
    3) make the hardware calibrated monitor your default monitor and strictly avoid changes or dragging pics to the other monitor (which seems to be the only reliable method)
    4) some guys even force both monitors to use the profile of their hardware-calibrated monitor (using color sync) to make sure they see what they should see on at least that one monitor. What a stone-age workaround for the the world's leading imaging program!
Considering that reliable colors in professional (=multi monitor) settings should be the most basic function of photoshop this mayor malfunction should be solved with CS5! Otherwise we might have to live with it for some more years...
Have Adobe and Apple realized this bug and on their agenda? Will it be gone with OS 10.6.3? Can anyone explain the reasons for this bad bug? Is there a "officially" recommended workaround?
    Thanks, regards,
    Eric

There have been several threads dealing with this malfunction. But most faded out in silence or acceptance of the workarounds.

But man, this is no minor bug! Consistent colors are the by far most important basic function of photoshop. If you cannot rely on the colors in photoshop you can as well use "Preview" and "Word" for print production ;-)
Carson, how did Apple react to your complaint? What do you mean with "they don't get it". Do they not see it? Or can't they get it right?
Shall we open a thread at apple forums to point out that it's not the problem of a single user?

  • Dual monitor possible on G3 Beige 300?

I would like to be able to use a dual monitor set up, one for all my menus, and the other for workspace in each program. I am running OS 9.2 now but will be upgrading to OS X shortly after the holidays. Is this possible? What kind of hardware/software would I need. I already have 2 monitors, both 15 pin traditional PC monitors, one already being used by the G3. Any help would be great.

The Mac has been able to support multiple monitors arranged into an "Extended desktop" since the Mac-II days. Every well-behaved Mac Application can be used with it, and the monitors can be completely different and it still works great. The left half of a window can be shown on the left screen in 32-bit color, the right half can be on the right screen in Black-and-White. When you scroll it, they move together. There is no additional software needed.
Each display needs a Video card for its screen buffer. There is one built into the Beige G3 motherboard. Its 2 MB VRAM standard can be expanded to 6 MB VRAM. The built-in had a "two-row" connector -- you need a VGA adapter or Multiple Scan adapter to change to three-row "VGA" connector AND provide the right code so that the right resolutions can be supported.
Additional display adapters can be plugged into an available PCI slot. Mac-specific ATI cards with 16 MB VRAM or more and VGA connector are popular, and well-supported into Mac OS X. Allan Jones recommended a list on a post nearby:

  • T420 and dual monitors using eGPC?

    Hello all,
I just purchased my first ThinkPad, a T420 (4180 62U).  So far I really love this machine.
Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize that this model does not support dual external displays with the built-in graphics processor.
I was wondering if anyone has had success with using a external graphics card along with the dock so that they can have the dual external monitors and the laptop screen running.
If so, what hardware should I be looking at? I would welcome any advice or recommendations.
    Thanks
    Zim

    Thanks for the quick reply!
I haven't actually tried the dock yet.  I was going to order one, then I read that you had to have the Nvida Optimus graphics card to actually do a dual monitor + laptop screen set-up which my ThinkPad does not have.
It's my understanding that the intel graphics HD 3000 allows another monitor, it just doesn't support tow external monitors.
    Am I mistaken about this?
If so, then I'll be real happy, because using 3 screens will be a great help when using Cisco Packet Tracer simulator, reading instructions and taking notes.

  • Dual Monitors with GPU and Motherboard not working

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else could help me out.
So, I decided to hook up an old monitor of mine to my rig today and, lo and behold, the monitor isn't being detected by my computer.
I've already got a monitor running through my GPU (NVidia GTX 960) via DVI.
Currently tried connecting my second (old) monitor to my motherboard with DVI as well, but it isn't being detected.
I went into my bios and forced my integrated graphics on, but when I checked in the device manager, it said my VGA graphics adapter "Cannot start (Error Code 10)"
Also tried updating VGA graphics adapter drivers, but I had the latest drivers already.
I'm not sure if that's related to the issue, but I thought it'd be worth mentioning.
(What's also worth mentioning is that I'm a complete casual when it comes to computer building and such, lol)
Motherboard is a Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3, supports VGA, DVI and HDMI.
Monitor that I'm trying to connect supports both DVI and VGA.

A lot of the 960's don't have 2 DVI's. However most have an additional HDMI and DisplayPort. I recommend you get an adapter from amazon or something. Just make sure that it will convert HDMI or DP to DVI. Usually amazon products have a good amount
of questions already answered by buyers.
Interesting that they'd go that route, I guess I just assumed since my 760 has two.
I've set up dual monitors using one DVI and one HDMI before, but I ran into issues with screen sizing. Despite having two identical monitors set at the same resolution the mouse would not transmit over to the second monitor at the same height as it was on
the first, so I had to buy an adapter like Joshua suggested.

  • No signal to dual monitors on start up

HP ENVY Phoenix 810-170st CTO Desktop PC, windows 8.1
Two computer monitors, same models, one connected by dvi and one by hdmi. Upon start up they will randomly fail to display anything and will say "no signal, entering power saving mode". Sometimes unplugging one while the computer is still on will allow the other to start displaying and I can log in then plug the other in. Sometimes though I need to manually power off the computer, unplug one, power back up, log in and then plug the other in. Both displays work, both cables are fine, it just seems that occasionally when I power up with both displays plugged in neither will recognize it is getting a signal. Furthermore, once actually logged in I can reconnect the second display without a problem. Any ideas?

    Hello naros89,
I have read your post on how you are intermittently experiencing display issues from your dual monitor setup, and I would be happy to guide you towards a resolution! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Is this an on-going, or recent issue?
What is the Product and Model Number of your two monitors?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on Using Two or More Monitors with One Computer (Windows 8). This should help stablize your dual-display setup by alloting one of your monitors as a primary display, and the other as a secondary.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • Connecting MBP w/Retina and Work Laptop with Switch to dual monitors

I have the latest MBP w/retina display and NVidia GT750M video card.  I also have my work laptop (Dell, Win 7, HDMI out). I want to connect these to a dual monitor setup with a switch.  I currently only have one monitor that is 1920 x 1080 and supports hdmi and dvi.  I would like to buy another cost effective monitor to take advantage of my MBP's higer resolution and have that as my main monitor.
Next I would like to connect the two laptops to the dual monitor setup via switch to go back and forth between systems.
What is the best switch to buy for my needs?  Does OS matter when selecting switches? Monitor recommendations are appreciated also.

I am also seeing lots of posts about Mavericks not working well with switches.  Has this issue been resolved?

    Hi marconi de baloni,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like the computer is not recognizing a second display. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Connect multiple displays to your Mac
If a display is not recognized, choose Apple menu > System Preferences on the primary Mac, click Displays, then click Display.
Open the Display pane for me
Then click the Detect Displays button.
You can also try putting your Mac to sleep and then waking it.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Does Photoshop CC support dual monitors

I just got off a chat with PS CC support. Since the latest update I have to click several times on photos edited in Camera Raw before they open in PS. The support person tells me that Adobe does not recommend the use of dual monitors. I have been using dual monitors for over 5 years, my computer has plenty of horsepower and every photographer or designer I know uses at least two monitors and sometimes more. It seems ridiculoyus to me that Adobe would say this. Has anyone else run into this concern? Thanx
    Jim Cummings.

Jim, can you correlate the delay with anything other than Photoshop/Bridge?  What drive is the Bridge cache saving to?  What drive is Photoshop's primary scratch space assigned to?   I'm wondering if those drives are needing to wake up from sleep mode.
If this is happening with previously processed RAW files, could it be to do with their Sidecar files?  Do virgin RAW files open OK?  You could try converting to DNG perhaps.  John Nack blogged about saving a ton of drive space converting all his RAW files to DNG a few days ago.  Whoops!  I just checked and it was to do with Lightroom
