T400 glossy display?

I just purchased a new T400 with the14.1 WXGA TFT with CCFL backlight. It appears to have a shiny smooth glass screen instead of the typical slightly roughened feel I am used to with matte displays. I was under the impression that all T400 displays were matte screens, is it possible I have a glossy screen?

Has Anyone Ordered the MBP with Glossy Display ???

I am on the fence like many people (except professional photographers) about this issue. I have seen it on the MacBook in the Apple Store and I cannot decide. The desktop blue color looks like true blue while the matte MBP look soooo washed out in comparison.

I returned my mbp17 and ordered one with a glossy display, way better crisper graphics. If you're not constantly in intense light environement I think it's the way to go

No.
You may be able to put some kind of covering over the screen to make it glossy, but I'd recommend against it.

Select Matte or Glossy Display?

I'm planning to order a MBP as a replacement for my PB. I won't be doing any graphic,video or specialized photograhy tasks with it. I understand a glossy display is not recommended for tasks like that. I primarily will be using it at home. I have seen the Macbooks in the stores and tried a side by side comparison to the pros and it did seem as if the MB's display was brighter and the colors seemed to be more distinct than the pros.
The glare and the reflections were noticeable if I looked for them especially if viewed from the side but I don't think that's the way most of us use laptops. I know that I would be happy with either but would appreciate any advice in choosing.

I wish they had the glossy option before. I would've gone with it. Just because I've been using matte LCD forever. Just for a change. Plus they looked really nice in the Apple Store.
I guess if you mainly use it indoors, then go for the glossy. It's all personal opinions.

Glossy Display

Hello,
I am a current iBook owner who will be looking at getting a MacBook in the somewhat near future.
I have read alot of posts around these forums saying beware of the glossy display for this reason and that such as glare. However, I don't believe any of the naysayers even have a MacBook.
What is the truth on this matter? What is the deal with glare and how does the screen fair outdoors on a sunny day? It is my understaning that the display is 30% brighter, which goes along way, and I want that aspect ratio badly.
Anything else I should know about the display?

The best way to check it out is to go to a store and compare one to a matte screen, but perhaps that isn't practical in your case. I generally don't like glossy displays, but I really like the one on the MacBook. I've moved from a 12" PowerBook, and the brightness and increase in size (and widescreen aspect) are a big improvement.

Glossy or non-glossy display?

Hello everyone. I am going to get a new macbook pro in a week and I am torn between the glossy and non glossy display. Can anyone share their experience with the glossy display and what is the general advice for someone in my position?

Stay away from the glossy displays, they are can be very hard on the eyes if even a small amount of light hit them due to the glare and reflection. Matte displays are considerably more friendly for Laptop machines due to their ability to manage glare.

Glossy display newbie Q

Hi.. I'm thinking of getting one of the new Macbooks but could do with some feedback on the glossy display.
I've previously been using a Dell Inspiron PC laptop with a 'glossy-type' screen which is fine indoors but outdoors is completely hopeless. The general reflection of light makes using the laptop outdoors impossible.
Are people finding this with the Macbooks or are the screens ok (obviously, to a certain extent)

The best thing to do is to head down to your closest Apple store and compare the two screens side by side for yourself. All the Macbooks have glossy screens. Some of the MacBook Pros do. ALL of Apple's Cinema Displays (the big monitors) are currently matte screens.
I will say that I've recently moved to a glossy screen after years of matte screens on my PowerBooks, and I couldn't be happier. I really like the glossy look.
I'd also argue that no laptop screen is great to use outdoors when the sun is shining directly on it. Whether it's matte or glossy, it's still going to be miserable to use in direct sunlight.

The Glossy Display

Can anyone reccomend a film of some kind (to make the glossy display flat) that I can put over the display? I have a large sliding door window in the background that I can't avoid and it shows up smack dab in the middle of my screen (night time is no problem as I have lamps to the side of the display. Maybe you should wait a few weeks to see if the product becomes available at a more reasonable cost.
In my opinion, paying $34 for about twelve cents worth of plastic seems to me like a price that will soon drop.

MacBookPro glossy display as good as iMac display?

How good is the MacBookPro glossy display compare to the iMac display? I just love the colour of the iMac display, i noticed however that the matte MBPs in the stores are not as awesome as the iMac. I have no experience with the glossy MBPs and the store only displays the matte ones. Does anyone have an opinion if the MBP glossy display can match the display performance of the iMac?

It is not so much the display as the way the computer produces the colors BTW. The iMac is capable of true "millions of colors" because it uses 24 bit color (8 bit each, RGB) however the MacBook Pro uses only 18 bit color (6 bit per color, RGB) This produces 260,000 colors which then are added too by dithering to provide the in between colors. While it works well and is beautiful it cannot compete side by side with the iMac, hence less 'wow' factor

MBP glossy display & viewing angle

I wonder whether the glossy display on a MBP is actually the same LCD with just another film on it or a totally different screen.
I'd like to know because today I saw one of those CrystalView screens on an Fujitsu Siemens Amilo of a friend. The viewing angle and sharpnesss is amazing, on almost 180 degrees I could read the screen. much better I guess than the screen we get from apple or... is there any chance the glossy display option would bring us a better viewing angle?
Personally I don't like the glossy screens but if they're better I might order my MBP with the glossy option.
The store didn't have any on display, so i could not compare.

Glossy vs. matte is an individual decision so do your own comparison. Probably most clients will actually prefer the look of images on the glossy display, however they may then wonder why the same pix in print or on a pro display have less "pop."
IMO buy the 17" MBP rather than the 15" MBP. My reasons:
• More screen real estate, a very big deal when in the field and no external display is connected.
• Much higher pixel count, a very big deal when in the field and no external display is connected.
• Available matte display, a very big deal (to many pro photogs, including me) when in the field and no external display is connected.
• Faster; the added size and easier heat dissipation of the 17" apparently allow Apple to make less engineering compromises.
• Twice the available RAM, a very big deal moving forward as app vendors evolve apps to better utilize available cheap RAM, OS 10.6 and boxes with more RAM access. Under OS X Photoshop (and probably Aperture as well) can already take advantage of up to 32 GB installed RAM, maybe more.
• Longer battery life is alleged, which matters not to me but some folks care.
• After years of using 15" and smaller, starting with the Duo, I now use a 2.33 GHz 17" and far prefer the larger size.
• All the above benefits and it only weighs 1.1 pound more than the 15" MBP.

Glossy display... bleh

Just played around with one at the local Apple store. I've gotta say, it's too bad the MacBook isn't available without the Glossy display, otherwise it might be a winner. The glare on the screen caused me to squint too often and I got that "eye headache" after extended use. I was surprised that the black MacBook was a Matte finish rather than the glossy finish of the ipods, but on a positive note, it was not susceptible to scratches.

I wondered why in the world a 'glossy' display would be an 'option' on new MBP... and why it was included in the MB. As one poster said (in the graphic arts industry, at least) "we'd put a shade around the monitor to block the glare" - and some fairly expensive shades, at that, if they came from Barco to use on their calibrated monitors.
What's the point of the 'glossy' display, anyway? The advertising indicates that it produces 'more vibrant colors' or something like that... sounds as if it's a glare through-back, something we've been trying to get rid of for decades rather than a feature. I read 'glossy' and though 'GLARE!!' and, as I said, when I saw that it was now a 'free' screen option on the MBP, I just had to wonder... the display, for the most part, is the one thing that has had few problems or complaints (and I've certainly never heard the word 'glare' associated with the MPB... or the now retired PBs, for that matter - it sounds like a sort of spray-on glossy lacquer that you'd apply in an automotive paint shop - I guess you have to keep your screen waxed rather than just clean?).
Interesting to hear that the black MB is matte rather than glossy... that would actually make it more appealing to me than glossy, like the iPod.
Sigh... no Apple Stores around here and I'd really like to see them. If I can work on suppressing my gag reflex I suppose I'll get to CompUSA in a month or so and see if they have, at least, the white on display.
Also sounds as if Apple has a terrific successor to the iBook for the educational markets. The gigabit Ethernet will be a plus for many educational users, as well.
And the 6 hour battery life sounds fantastic - I wonder if that's simply the price we pay for what is, in portables, high-level graphics?

Purchased new W530 Glossy Display??

Hello everyone,
Finally I found a good deal on Thinkpad W530, I got a good deal on it as its a display piece (the one placed in display shelves) hence I got it cheaper.
I had few questions for which I need answer to ensure me that I havent been scammed by the seller;
Here are the specs
- Intel Core i7 3632QM @ 2.2 GHz
- 8GB RAM
- 500 GB 5400 RPM HDD
- Quadro K1000M Graphics Card
- Full HD Display (1080p)
- 9 Cell Battery
The only thing thats bothering me is that the display is glossy, I'm not sure W530's are shipped with glossy displays are not, as I assume most of the workstation series notebooks with 1080p display usually have matte display.
I fear that the seller has changed the display!
Can anyone confirm please?

[cbassett360] ... it sounds like this is basic unit (although I don't recall any of the W530's having a K1000M. All the ones I saw when I got mine was a K2000M (which I have) or the integrated Intel graphics, but the K2000M was the most common (I could be wrong).
You are. W530's are baked with either K1 or K2 cards.
[cbassett360] And as stated above, no W530 has a glossy screen. so if it does, it's probably not a W530 (unless by chance someone did a screen swap on it--which I don't know if you can even do that.)
You can. Swapping screens takes 10 minutes. I do it all the time. When did the screen make or break a W530? This is crazy talk. Gloss screens are an option for most any machine.

Normal vs Glossy Display

has anyone noticed you can now get the MBP with a glossy display as well as the normal non-glossy display? is this just literally the covering on the display or is the whole display completely different? which is better do you think?
just to add - i am outraged that i own a noisy and very hot 1.83 MBP and could probably not only get a better working 2.0 MBP, but get it for freakin cheaper!! apple are <insert your choice of rude word>!!

I would wait for the others to jump on this one and watch for complaints. Everyone, just hold off and wait until you verify what the screen is made out of.
My immediate concern is how easy it will scratch.
If they made this glossy screen out of the same material as the iPod Nano surface, then you are really in trouble.
Imagine the first time you need to wipe the dust off of the LCD screen (which is not unusual), and you get scratches on your screen.
Now, how nice is everything going to look?
I know you can damage a regular LCD panel if you clean it with the wrong materials. But, you are generally safe if you use a micro-fiber cloth and dampen it with water.
But, I know from first-hand experience that you don't dare touch a Nano screen with anything (absolutely nothing).
So, have they done it to us again?
We'll have to wait and see what the early adopters find out. If the new screen shows scratches, then that glossy picture may not be good for long.
I guess we'll have to see if we can find out what that new LCD screen is made out of.
If it's glass, then great that's perfect.
If it's that glossy plastic they use on the iPods, then we are doomed.

IMac 24" with Glossy display?

I was wondering if there is a kind of glossy film that one can place on the iMac's diaplay to make it even better for watching DVDs by increasing the "blacks" and the "contrast"?

Hi, yes you are right. By accident I found in a german website, that the offer those films for 15" displays. This iMac is very new. We have to wait a bit more.
