T400 Homegroup Problem

I'm not sure if this is a Windows 7 problem as a result of the laptop itself or not but as it is the last thing I've checked...
I have 3 computers: 1 wired desktop(64-bit), 1 wireless desktop(32-bit), and 1 wired laptop(T400 w/ 64-bit) each running Windows 7 Professional.  The two desktops are able to view one another fine in the Homegroup and exchange files.
The T400 laptop is having some issues.  It can see the wireless desktop and transfer files from that machine to itself, but it is not able to even see the wired desktop in the homegroup.  Both desktops are able see the laptop but neither is able to get files from it.
Each of the desktops can see all 3 computers in the standard network location, the laptop is only able to see the wireless desktop.
I've run troubleshooter on all three computers, and I've ensured they are all on the 'home network'.  I've also made sure the network discovery/file sharing/etc is on in the 'advanced settings' and they are all apart of the same workgroup.
The problems seem focused on the laptop, and both desktops worked right from the get go but the laptop hasn't.  Further, I used to have Windows 7 RC (Build 7100) on both the wired desktop and the wired laptop and homegroup feature worked flawlessly at that time...just not with the release.

hey wolverine42,
uninstall the current camera driver and any software that has access to the camera.
windows should now be installing its own generic camera driver. once done, there should be a camera icon in My Computer. Launch that and see if the camera works.
If it does, head over to >> http://support.lenovo.com , download and install the camera driver that is available here and try again.

  • T400 - Video problems and a long wait for repair...

    Hi,
I'd just like to state my experience with Lenovo Customer Support for a video problem with my T400.  Bottom line, as of today, it's been around 27 business days that it's been with Lenovo, and 41 days total since it's failed on me, and nobody, including Lenovo Customer Support, seems to know what its status is exactly, except that they're waiting on a part which has no ETA.
In July 2009, I bought a T400, a 2764CTO version with the switchable graphics between the internal intel graphics and the ATI GPU.
All was well until February 1st, 2010, when the LCD sudden wouldn't work.  Well, it would work, but the screen was very very dim, even with the display maxed out on brightness.  You would have literally bring your nose to the screen in order to even make out any text or images - definitely unusable.  However, if you hooked up an external monitor via the video output, the T400 would display video output properly that way.  When I did this, I noticed that the switchable graphics option wasn't there any more - couldn't switch to the ATI GPU.  Based on this, I figured it must be a video card or LCD issue, or a combination of both.
So, I called Lenovo Customer Support (CS) at 1-800-565-3344, since I'm up here in Canada, and I initially was issued a case number of 41JRFSD, and I agreed to send it to a local Lenovo Repair Centre.  Oops, my bad, I made a mistake using the locator tool I was told to use at bplocator.lenovo.com, and thought the Centre was relatively close.  Not quite.  So, I called Lenovo CS again, and they issued me with a new case number, 40KWSYF, and said they'd send a box for return to depot.  And within 2 days, Feb 2nd or 3rd, I got a Purolator courier return box.  That's fast service!  Pleased, I put my T400 in according to instructions, and I sent it off.
Fast forward to about mid-February.  I called Lenovo CS, and apparently there was a delay - the depot needed a part that wasn't in stock. Fine, I know these things can happen - I'll wait.
Fast forward to March 1st.  I talk to a Lenovo CS rep, and it appears that the part needed has arrived, and they've put a rush order to get the computer back to me. Great!
Fast forward to March 8th, still no computer.  I talk to another Lenovo CS rep... strange, there's no update.  The issue gets escalated to the Depot managers.
Fast forward to March 12th.  Still no word on my T400's status.  An email fron CS has been sent to the depot.  Not even the CS reps know what's going on.  The rep I talk to figures there should be a response by the end of the day.
Fast forward to today, March 13th, 4:50pm Pacific Time.  I just finish talking to Lenovo CS, there's been no response from the depot.  Apparently there's a part that they're waiting on for repairs, but there's no ETA on it.  Is it the same part that I've waiting on all this time?  Is it a new one?  I don't know.
At this point, I've been told to send an email explaining my situation, and I've also been told to talk to Scott the next time I call CS on Monday after 3pm Eastern.  I have to stress that the Lenovo Customer Support Reps I've talked to have all been very sympathetic and have been courteous, helpful, and professional - something I appreciate from having worked in Customer Support myself.  But the bottom line remains: my computer's not back to me.
So, my questions to the community here: is my experience here typical?  Is there any hope of my seeing my computer back, or even at least just the hard drive?  I've used Lenovo computers for work for the past 7 years, and it was my good work experiences that led me to buying a Lenovo for home use.  However, it's been a while since I've been without my T400, and I was hoping to get my taxes done on the computer too, since they're due at the end of March.  I'll reserve judgement on Lenovo until I get my computer back, but at this point, all I can say is... I'm disappointed.
If you're reading this, I'll let you judge my experience for youself.  I'll update my case as it progresses.
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
So, an update with some good news: my computer is finally back!
After a total of over 40 business days (just over 2 months) I finally have my T400 back at home, working again!
According to the spec sheets, the repair depot had to replace: the systemboard/planar, display/LCD panel, LCD cable, PC card, bluetooth, and the inverter.  BIOS/Embedded controller was also updated, along with the regular diagnostics to ensure everything was working properly.
I give Lenovo credit though: they got the final parts to repair the computer on Monday, April 5th, and shipped my computer back to me for the next day (today, April 6th).  That's fast service, once repaired!
However, my case spans over 4 screens of updates and repair depot orders of parts.
Also, it took me over 10 calls to Lenovo's Customer Service, plus an escalation to a higher-level manager after 1 month had passed, to get progress updates and ETAs for repair.
Lenovo called me only once to give me an update, and that was the manager whom my issue was escalated to: all the other times, I called Lenovo for an update.
The story doesn't end here, however:
In talking to Customer Support, they told me that Sales might be able to sell me an extended warranty at a discount, given the issues I had.  And indeed, after talking to Sales, they offered me a 1 year warranty extension at a price of just over $100 CDN, plus tax.  This is a sale price, compared to the regular retail of $129.  Unfortunately, they can't sell me just one month.
At this point, I refused their offer, and again escalated to a manager to request an extension of exactly 1 month on my existing warranty.  I figure 1 month delay in repairs, that's plausible - crap happens, and while most repairs take 5-10 business days, I can understand it can sometimes go higher.  Two months though....  My request for a warranty extension is being considered by the manager it was escalated to.
So, one last question for you folks reading this: am I being unreasonable, talking to Lenovo support one more time to request a 1 month extension of my warranty, given the length of time it's taken for repairs?  I'll post the response Lenovo will give me tomorrow, as they've said they'll do.
One thing for sure: Lenovo's response will definitely influence my choice of brand from whom to buy a new computer (and it will influence the choice of my friends who've heard my issues, and maybe yours too).  My particular repair problem may not come up often, but if it does happen to you, I'd be happy to know of your experience.
Thanks for sticking with me through the drama!

  • T400 LCD problem

hi guys, my t400 lcd does not included led backlight, and i feel it is terribly dim compare to other notebook such as compaq v3000 and hp dv2000, what is going on? i heard someone said t400  lcd without led backlight are good too, but my lcd seems dim even though i switch to screen brightness to the max, it is not totally dark but it looks dim, can you guys help me?

also do you have the switchable graphics card version? if so switch to intel by going to the power saving mode, and see whether the internal LCD still have this problem.
But what you are describing sounds like an issue with the LCD panel itself, you can get a new LCD for around 150 to 200 dollars on the net.

  • T400 LCD problem possibly connected to power

I have a T400 and recently I have been getting a turqouise flashing line at the bottom of my screen (not more than 1 mm thick).  It flashes consistently once every ~4 seconds, and it only flashes when the battery is less than 100%.  When my computer is plugged into the adapter and fully charged this is not an issue.  I have tried restoring my computer to a point before this issue started, reinstalled the BIOS, reinstalled the video driver, and done a SFS scan, but at this point I am not sure what else I can do.  Any suggestions?

  • T400 Dock Problem

Received our company's first T400 today.
    1) Put the machine into the advanced minidock. Power on computer, nothing on the monitor attached to the DVI port. Computer does boot up though (i can tell because you can hear it booting up and i opened up the laptop screen and it was booted. Vista startup sound came through laptop speakers, not speakers attached to dock. It's almost like it doesn't know it's in the dock.
    2) With the machine OUT of the dock, put it to sleep, put it in the dock, then wake it up and then it does function properly in the dock after slowly re-recongnizing all the dock hardware.
Tried it in two different docks, same problem. A t61 in the same dock will cold boot normally and function properly in the same dock.
This is NOT a software issue because it's not even recognized during the bios boot.
    Any ideas?

I confess to not having a T400 at the moment, situation will be different on Tuesday, and was therefore unable to look in BIOS myself. My comment was based on T61 BIOS options.
Which T400 do you have? Please post your Type and Model Number, do NOT post your s/n.
    Thanks

  • Lenovo T400 LCD Problem (shut off and bezel light abnormality )

Hello !!! This is regarding a problem with the Thinkpad T400. The problem is -- When the lid is at ~65 degrees , everything works fine. Whereas , when the lid is raised to viewing angle of arounbd 90 degrees , it goes to sleep AND , I noticed that the bezel lights (wifi , bluetooth , Cellular , Caps Lock etc...) also turn off , this normally never used to happen before. Even while the laptop is about to go to sleep, it will keep the bezel lights on till you can see the moon light. Now, even while sleeping , I can't see any moon light.  If you have a valuable input , please do share it with me. Excuse me for any spelling errors as I have to bend my head doewn to peek under the display and tyoe .. -- it's painful Thanks a Lot!!!! Matt

    Hi ChrisMatthew,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I find this issue could be with LCD cable, if you have enough knowledge on system hardware you can check with reseating on both the ends (On LCD panel & System board).
If you are want to try on that then you can also do it with the help of Hardware Maintenance Manual.
Please click here to visit the link where you can get the list of support contact numbers, select the respective region and give a call.
    Hope this helps.

Do you have any tip about which could be the problem? Any other tests I can do?
BTW, I tried the same process in Safe Mode, and the same problem exists so I understand it is not related with anything I could install.
    Thanks in advance,

    - start > run > type msconfig and press enter
    - click services tab and select hide all microsoft services and disable all third party services.
    - click startup tab and disable all startup items
    - click ok and choose restart
    does this work?

  • T400: Startup problems

Recently just bought a Lenovo T400, and was having no problems with it. Until yesterday, my battery was flat and the computer just went off by itself. Then I went to sleep, today, when i boot the PC, it was fine but after it went to the part where it tells me to click ctrl-P to interrupt normal startup and stuff, it hung there.
I pressed the power button for 4 seconds and then boot again, then it didn't start at all. The power-on LED is lit, battery and AC Led is also lit. What is happening?

  • Win 7 on T400 - driver problems

I just did a clean install of Win 7 on my Thinkpad T400. It had Vista Basic on it previously. My system is Thinkpad T400 2764-CTO.
After updating and installing drivers  I still get an exclamation mark in Device Manager.
The devices that still have an exclamation mark:
    PCI Serial Port
    PCI Simple Communication Controller
I got all my drivers from here.
What drivers do I need to install to fix this problem?
Also, where can I find drivers for the touchpad? I can no longer customize the scrolling feature on it.

I believe I read elsewhere that those are for the Intel AMT drivers. I didn't install those drivers either because I don't really need that capability. The splats don't bother me.
I don't get the on-screen indicators either and I know I installed the hotkey driver. I didn't install the Fn-Space zoom driver because I prefer the one built-into Win7.

  • T400s Headset problem: only one female connector for Micro and earphones

    Hi there,
would need informations concerning the headset jack on the left of the laptop. Whereas in my old X60s have been two connectors for Microphone and stereo earphones (separately), now in the T400s only one connector is left, combining those two functions. As I would like to keep my headset: What kind of connector / adapter has to be used? Is the new jack stereo or mono?
    Who can help me?
    Regards,
    Lutz

    Hi Mats (and all others),
problem solved here: I have bought a Belkin "Y-adapter" picture here
Works great with a mono headset (1 x micro and 1 x headphone, both with stereo plug).
The microphone uses the top of the connector, the headphone uses the second port. Perfect.

  • T400s Battery Problem

My T400s is a week old, it has mainly been docked, but also a couple battery cycles without power.
The problem is that my battery will not fully charge, at first it would stay at 85% and now it only goes to 98% charged.  The battery tool shows it is in good health, etc.
How do I go about getting replacement?

don't know how to solve your problem, but all i can say is that the battery led on the lid never goes off if ac is attached.

  • T400 Boot Problems

    I have a refurbished Lenovo T400.
Starting today, I have had this problem. When I go to boot the computer, it goes through the initial ThinkPad screen where you access the ThinkVantage menus. Then it goes to the Intel(R) ME Firmware screen, where you can access the ME functions via CTRL-P. After that, it loads up a black screen, and stays there.
Has anyone experienced this before? Is there a simple solution? Thank you.
    Regards,
    Greg

Additionally, when it is in this black screen, every button I push causes the computer to give a loud beep, with the exceptions of CTRL+ALT+DELETE, which cause the computer to reboot, only to wind up back at this black screen.

  • T400 Display problem

    Hello,
i just bought a lenovo t400, and all seem to work fine except 1 thing.
I changed all some settings in power manager ... the  display brightness, turn on / off display all work great, i close the lid when im on the laptop ... open and all work fine ( except 1 or 2 fast green flash )
The only one problem is when i close the lid and i connect with rdp on my windows xp station, after i open the lid and the lid stay black, the only 1 way i find to get my screen back is fn+f4 to put it on sleep mode then fn+f4 and now i have a screen.

Try holding the Fn key and tapping F7.

  • T400 Boot problem

I have a strange boot problem: Whenever I reboot my T400, the machine freezes immediately after loading grub. (it passes the ThinkPad screen fine). I multiboot linux/win7, and this is not a grub problem, since when I boot Win7 the machine freezes somewhere in the windows loader, (the windows logo shows) and when I boot linux it freezes in the linux boot loader, with a blank screen, showing just a blinking underline. The disk seems ok too, since I can go for months having the machine sleep to RAM and resume without problem. It freezes only at boot, and the only way to get past it is to remove the power cable+battery/hold power button and pray. Any ideas for a more permanent solution?

    loko, hello and welcome,
No answer, just questions:  "whenever" you reboot - as in every time?  And specifically _reboot_ as opposed to cold boot?  Reboot from Win to Win, Lin to LIin, Win to Lin, Lin to Win?  And warm reboot, or full power off, power on reboot?
When you reboot, is it always from an OS that has been fully shut down and _to_ an OS that has been previously fully shut down?
I've seen some pretty strange things happen when one reboots a hibernated OS where in the meantime the other OS has touched the file system.  I wouldn't expect grub to care, unless this is grub2 - then who knows?
Also have seen some pretty strange stuff when warm rebooting from Linux to Windows.  It can leave BIOS in a strange state.  On my desktop, my NIC will be dead until I do a full cold boot - from AC mains off.
Just tossing *stuff* at the wall here,
