T400 internal speakers quit working however headphones OK!

Out of the blue, my speakers quit working this evening... however, headphones are fine.
I reinstalled the latest driver but no change.  Under Control Panel > Sound, Speakers are still selected as default Playback device.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks...

I too was suspecting hardware, especially after reinstalling the driver and rebooting to no avail.
This morning though, I decided to power the unit down, and disconnect the battery to remove all power from the motherboard.  After a couple of minutes, reinstalled the battery, fired it back up and walla, sound was back!
Don't know for sure whether it was powering down the unit or removing the battery but I'll take the results!

  • Headphone Jack Glowing Red, Internal Speakers Not Working...

Hey, I have a 2.0GHz White MacBook (almost a week old), and I just recently came across this problem (this morning, actually). I usually have my MacBook connected to some external speakers through the headphone jack, the internal speakers are pretty terrible. Anyway, last night I left the computer on playing music as I fell asleep, this morning I woke up and the computer must have some how come unplugged from the AC power, as it was dead. I plugged it back in and everything was fine (I mean, it had to charge up, and the battery 'health' in iStat Pro was down to 93%, also not sure what this means... But everything else was fine). Then, I unplugged my external speakers and the jack was glowing red, I believe there's an LED inside. The internal speakers would then not work.
I did a quick Google search and discovered that this problem had been experienced on MacBook Pros. Someone recommended plugging in a set of headphones, I did so and then unplugged them and the internal speakers worked for a moment. I plugged in the external speakers again, and they worked (and work) fine. The problem is with the internals, they don't work, and plugging in my headphones again has not solved the problem, and the light is still on when the jack is not occupied.
    Any ideas?
[edit] As of this writing, they are currently working, after plugging in the headphones again and unplugging them, however, the light still blinks when I do this, and there is a bit of a hesitation between the headphone being unplugged and the internal speakers kicking in... (longer than normal, I know there was always a slight delay, but this is a few seconds of blinking light and no sound).

you can fix this by "cleaning" the audio jack. the computer thinks that a digital output is connected. if you go to sound under system preferences, and it says digital output rather than internal speakers, then this is the problem.
I used a tightly rolled up piece of toilet paper to clean the jack. I twisted it up, stuck it in the jack, and then moved it around for a while. the red light went off and my internal speakers started working. someone else used a toothpick.
also, before i fixed this, i couldn't turn the volume up or down (unless i was using headphones) and the volume level screen that shows up on the screen had a circle with a line thru it...like the no smoking signs, but small and just under the volume bars.

If you see a red light in the audio output port, then the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone plug a few times and see if you can trip the switch.  If that fails, insert a cocktail stirrer and the like and jiggle it around inside.  If that fails, take it to an Apple store and have the technicians at the genius bar do it for you.
    Ciao.

  • Internal speakers quit on resume from sleep A505-S6005

When the system resumes from sleep the speakers don't work although the headphone jack does.  Tried BIOS and Realtek updates with no luck.  Phone support no help.  It takes a full power down and restart to get them to work again.

PROBLEM SOLVED ITSELF. Still not sure how or why. Ah well.
Whilst I've not had that particular problem, I am having a similar issue. Right speaker is very intermittent right now, although the earphone jack works perfectly in both analog and digital modes. Since I do listen quite a lot via the speakers and this just started tonight, I'd prefer to have an answer soonish.
Although my problem could simply be an issue with heat, that may not be the whole story. Impossible to tell at present. Will be giving the machine an overnight rest, see if the speakers wake up properly. Up to this point, was very happy with the machine. Will be taking to Best Buy to have it checked if the right speaker doesn't play properly tomorrow.
As a writer, I sometimes depend on soundscapes (whether they be music, ocean white noise, etc.) to help me calm my mind to write better. Without the speakers both working, however, I'm left with either earbuds or headphones, either of which can get uncomfortable for in-office use. Anyone have any better ideas?

  • HT2494 2012 MacBook Pro - no sound from internal speakers, red light in headphone port

    Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15".
I normally use external speakers plugged into headphone jack.
The other day I unplugged the external speakers and when I re-booted my Mac, I got the start up sound
but I have no sound coming from my internal speakers.  In System preferences sound output I see no entry for internal speakers.
I also notice a red light shining in the headphone jack port.  I see on youtube that this problem is rather widespread.
Some suggest using a paper clip to try to turn the light out, but I am not doing that.
I have Lion installed, tried using the MIDI-app to reconfigure the speakers, but I only get sound if the headphones are plugged in.
Is this a software or hardware problem?
I have a genius bar appointment today at my local Apple retail store, and my mac is still on warranty but this
is troubling that you spend $2300 for a laptop and after a bit of regular use the internal speakers no longer work.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

I agree Nick - it is a concern especially on such a basic function (sound) - Linc is right, the issue is microswitch, sounds like a bad design or a huge batch of sub quality switches, checking the forums this issue is common on MBP's.
Judging by the date and lack of further activity I assume you managed to get yours fixed at the genius bar ?
I finally fixed mine myself but posting reply for others who have same issue as this - however buyer beware folks, try this at your own risk !!!
The fix won't be liked by Apple Support, the genius bar, or the repair shops but it worked for me after over 12 months of using headphones / external speakers - WHAT A PIA !
    Method -
Held  Macbookpro on it's side with screen open and headphone/ audio  port facing toward ground.
Took WD40 can with straw dispenser and placed straw inside audio port - sprayed 3 or 4 one second burst of WD40 into port.
Held MBP that way for 30 seconds giving MBP a shake to drain WD40 out
(I performed this whole excercise outside where the WD40 could drain out without an issue ;-)
I then took an old set of headphones and re-inserted / removed them from the audio port approx 20 times in and out with music playing on the MBP -  intially when inserted music will only come from headphones then eventually MBP internal speakers start working !
I've tried everything else including the cocktail stick and bent pin inserted inside the port to try and free micro switch - nothing worked it was stuck fast.
As stated, can't endorse this for anybody else - you do so at your own risk - just stating this is what I did to get mine working again !

  • Internal speakers not working DV4-1225DX USING WINDOWS 7 64 BIT

DV4-1225DX USING WINDOWS 7 64 BIT.  Internal speakers stopped working and orange mute light is on.  Externaal speakers will work,

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45073.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.
When Windows has fully loaded.  Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • Internal speakers not working after upgrading to Maverics

internal speakers not working after upgrading to Maverics

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    14. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • IPod 2nd Generation Internal Speakers Not Working - HELP PLEASE!

A couple of days ago my ipod's internal speakers stopped working, the volume control dissapeared and no sound was coming out. Now, when i have my headphones in, music will be playing but every so often they will cut out and again, the volume control bar will dissapear. I then have to remove the headphones and put them back in. I've tried resetting the ipod and turning it on and off, no change.
Any help to solve it please? or is this the end of my trusty ipod?
    Ashlee

    Welcome to the discussions,
try to restore "as new ipod", don't use your backup to get your settings back to your ipod, it may contain the corrupt files causing this problem.
Make sure you transferred your purchases and synced your contacts/calendars before you start.

Right click your volume icon in the notification area and select "volume control options". From there, you should be able to select the external speakers.
    I hope that helps!

  • The last few times I've used headphones in my iPad, the audio has been all messed up to the extent where it's better to just use the internal speakers and not the headphones. I've tried multiple pairs of headphones to no avail. Help?

The last few times I've used headphones in my iPad, the audio has been all messed up to the extent where it's better to just use the internal speakers and not the headphones. I've tried multiple pairs of headphones to no avail.
The iPad was bought in mid-June, but I did not get extended Apple-Care warranty on it. Any idea of what's happenening?

Multiple means how many? If only 2 or 3, they could all be faulty. Try the headphones in some other device, to make sure they are OK. Or there could be something wrong with the headphone port.
Your iPad is still covered by the 1-year warranty so you should make a Genius appointment and have it looked at.
Another thing to try is to plug in the headphone jack a few times in succession to see if it frees up something inside the port.

  • Ipod touch 4G problem--internal speakers not working.

Ipod 4g internal speakers failing after one month. Ipod was "rebooted" which helped for a few hours, then restored, which helped for about 1-2 hours, each time internal speakers worked for a while then stopped, Now rebooting useless, I suspect that restoring it again will allow internal speakers to work, but that takes 2-3 hours.
We can use the earphones via the jack, but want to use the internal speakers.
Have the latest operating system (version 4.3.2), and exclusively sync with itunes on Mac platform.  3 other ipod touches (3rd gen) in house work perfectly. The sound is on, bluetooth is not enabled (no bluetooth devices in home anyway and have never set it up on this ipod touch).
Any ideas besides spending 3 hours restoring each time the internal speakers fail?  I have used air to blow out the earphone jack but that didn't help either. One application (line up 2) correctly indicates when the earphone jack is used and when it is not in use.
Will be getting a call from apple tomorrow, I suspect that will need a new ipod touch 4g.

you've exhausted all of the troubleshooting steps then it really needs to be replaced if it's still within the warranty.
