T400 screen brightness frequently resets

My T400 screen brightness resets to its lowest value intermittently.  Sometimes it takes only 30 seconds, sometimes it's several minutes.  If I press a key, it goes back to the bright setting.  I didn't intentionally change any power or screen settings, and none of the settings I can find (Windows or ThinkVantage power settings) indicate that this should happen.
Any idea what's going on?
Thanks.

  • T400 screen brightness standby issue

When my T400 comes out of standby the screen brightness goes to 100% even though the Power Scheme prior to standby was lower than 100%.  This causes me to have to manually adjust the screen brightness.  Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening? I have the ATI video adapter and I am making power setting changes via the Power Manager.

Is everyone running XP with this issue?  I had the same problem when I got my brand new T400 and after 5 calls to tech support for this and quite a few other nuisance problems they gave me an RMA to send the thing back after I reloaded with an XP set they had sent me thinking I had received a bad copy of XP.  Day before I was going to send it back I went to reload it again to get my info I had loaded off.  Well for whatever reason I chose to load it with the Vista recovery discs instead and it took care of all of the nuisance problems!!  I have no idea why but its not an issue now, all I can figure is whatever software is not checking the brightness when it comes back from standby doesn't properly run with XP as with my few other nuisance issues.  I'm loading 7 this weekend, will update to let everyone know how it works.
(Other issues included the LAN/Bluetooh icons in the task bar next to the clock-even after telling them to "go away" in the properties they failed to do so.  Sometimes the screen wouldn't even come back on after coming out of standby so I'd have to blindly shut it down and reboot.  Wireless connection was sporatic and fingerprint softwarewas finicky in not letting me load fingerprints(that one was a driver update issue though)-Like I said, Vista took care of all of it, not that I'm endorsing Vista because I do bellieve Vista was a total failed attempt at an OS by Microsoft and was released WELL before it was ready and properly tested.  My guess is the software/drivers for all the hardware with issues were developed under vista so it'll work with XP but doesn't like to and will be finicky....)

  • T400 Screen Brightness.

Whenever I am playing games, the screen may black out (and maybe blink a few times), and come back with a higher brightness setting. What can I do to prevent that? I remember doing something that prevent that from happening.

  • Screen brightness resets after every start up

Hi all, haven't been here in about a year. My imac's brightness has been resetting to the darkest point every time I shut down then subsequently start up (next day, whenever). I always had it set at it's highest point, which is what I preffered, and now I have to set it with the keyboard EVERYTIME! Not the end of the world but a little irritating. I don't know if it's related but also lately my normally smooth running imac has been hanging up on me with the spinning beach ball of death and I routinely have to initiate a "force quit" but don't have to actually force quit any app. for the imac to resume as normal. All I have to do is close the force quit window, wierd. 3rd party culprit?
    Thanks guy's.

Sounds strange.. Have you done the usual maintenance people around here suggest... repair permission.. clean caches? That's what I would do considering your other problems.
May want to try a Utility like this:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26516
Also, you may want to consider creating another account.. set that account to open upon boot... and see if the screen problem persists. If it doesn't, then it may be an issue with a preferences file...although I'm not sure screen brightness is controlled by a preferences file.. worth a shot though.

  • Reset SMC but Screen Brightness Keys still don't work

    hi all.
i noticed after squinting at the screen all day yesterday that my screen brightness keys F1 and F2 on my mac pro keyboard are not working.
first thing i did was look in the UI for some kind of manual setting like for the Sound and i was not able to find one so the screen is still a bit dark for my needs.
then i /unchecked/ the "Use Function Keys as..." box in the Settings in case something was screwed up or changed there.
then i reset the SMC controller which i basically did by default (as i understand it) by shutting down the computer and unplugging it overnight during a thunderstorm.
now i am back at trying to solve this and i am wondering if i should reset the PRAM which i guess i will do but i don't want to have to bother with resetting all the settings on this if i don't have to.
any ideas on what may be going on? i have a 23" cinema display and a Mac Pro 1,1.

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Summary
In some situations, you may need to reset your computer's SMC.  Learn how to identify these conditions and reset the SMC.
    Products Affected
    Desktop Computers, Portable Computers
Note: It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described below. In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications.  For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:
Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
Shutdown the Mac. Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.
If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.  After performing normal troubleshooting, these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:
    Fans
The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
    Lights
The keyboard backlight appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have this feature).
The Status Indicator Light (SIL) appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have an SIL).
Battery indicator lights, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portables that use non-removable batteries).
The display backlight doesn't respond correctly to ambient light changes on Mac computers that have this feature.
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
    System Performance
The computer is running unusually slowly although it is not experiencing abnormally high CPU utilization.
    Video
A computer that supports target display mode does not switch into or out of target display mode as expected.
A computer that supports target display mode switches into or out of target display mode at unexpected times.

  • T400: Annoying Screen Brightness Meter Keeps Flashing

I have looked for the setting this in the Thinkvantage power settings panel but haven't found it.
The issue is that my T400/xp when running on battery keeps flashing the screen brightness meter -- vertical green lines with sun icon on the left end -- at the bottom of the screen while I am working.
I assume, the brightness is re-calibrating depending on the battery power. (I do not have battery stretch enabled.)
Is there anyway to turn off this particular feature so that I don't have to get distracted by the brightness meter while running on the battery? Thanks.

  • Default screen brightness, T400

i am trying to setup default screen brightness to a specific level but all i found in the power manager tools (v 3.20) is dynamic brightness control which doesn't allow for the specific level of brightness. how should i resolve this issue? it would be nice if screenshots were provided.
    thanks

You can put it wherever you feel comfortable.
I would recommend 1 step higher brightness than the least you are able to stand--this will give you a balance of battery life and comfortable viewing.

  • Flashcards for screen brightness no longer work after BIOS upgrade

I have a Toshiba Satellite T135D/1320S laptop, and last night I upgraded the BIOS to v1.90 under the recently released recall notice.  AFter installing the BIOS, however, the Flashcard brightness controls no longer work. Whenever I press FN-6 or FN-7, the screen brightness Flashcard pops up and the toggle on the slider bar moves back and forth, but the brightness of the screen does not change.
I have disabled and re-enabled the Flashcards as suggested in a separate forum, and I've also downloaded the most recent display driver (AMD display driver v8.615).  Neither effort corrected the problem.
    Anyone have any other suggestions?

Sometimes it helps to reset the machine. With the battery and AC adapter removed, close the Power switch for half-a-minute. Re-attach those, press the Power button to turn the computer on, and then immediately press the F2 key while the Toshiba logo is displayed. Press F9 to restore the BIOS default settings, press F10, and then select Yes (Exit Saving Changes). The computer will restart.
Another things to try is reinstalling the TVAP.

  • Screen brightness OSD not working after 7 clean install

    Hi all,
I just did a clean install of Windows 7 on my T400. Initially, none of the OSDs were working (volume, led light, screen brightness). But, I found this thread--http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/On-Screen-Display-feature-no-longer-works-i...--and downloaded the Hotkey drivers. This brought back the volume and led OSDs, but not brightness. Additionally, for some reason now the screen does not get nearly as dim as it used to.
Am I missing something obvious? Thanks!

  • 24" iMac Screen Brightness Bug and others

    Hi,
There seems to be some serious issues with the 24" iMac. About 6 days ago I bought a 24" iMac (2.66 Mhz model w/4 GB RAM + 640HD).
Out of the box it had Leopard 10.5.5 installed; there were several problems.
    1. Screen brightness was way too BRIGHT. Display preferences would not pull brightness down. At least not down far enough so that the screen could be viewed without extreme discomfort. Plus add insult to injury a reboot would reset the preferences to maximum brightness. NOTE: An upgrade to 10.6.1 did NOT fix the issue.
    2. Viewing a browser page via either Safari or Firefox (latest versions of each) was not good. A vertical scrolling would be jumpy and appear pixelated. Upgrade to 10.6.1 seemed to fix most of the issue in Safari, but Firefox was still not working properly. The issue appeared like a horizontal "ripple" in about the bottom 2/3 of the browser window. The effect did NOT extend outside of browser window. Changing screen resolutions did not work.
    3. Connecting a USB Logitech head set caused issues with Sound preferences.
If the head set was connected during startup the machine would recognize them as main sound. The internals speakers did NOT appear in the Sound preferences. as an optional choice. Removing USB headset and reboot would return the internal speakers to the Sound preferences. Plugging in headseat would work for a while. We could repeat and same problem would occur.
These are all in 10.6.1 - definate bugs.
Returned with the iMac to the Apple store. Bottom line, after nearly three hours; the Apple technician, and everyone could see what we were talking about.
Regarding the screen brightness. Nothing they could do about it. They stated that "not too many people have complained about it, to their knowledge." They stated that the electronics in the "florescent" panel could not be turned down the same way. TRANSLATION: The programers at Apple let this one slip past them. As a customer (software programmer & network analyst) I expected a bit more of an intelligent answer.
    However.
Examining the 20" model I noticed that we could turn down the screen brightness - at least to a level that my wife and I could live with. PLUS the settings remained after a restart. Something that was NOT happening with the 24" model.
So - we exchanged the 24" for a 20". Frankly we are a LOT happier. The Safari/Firefox issue is still carried over to the 20". However it is not nearly so noticable on the smaller screen.
Plus the USB headset did not cause the same Sound Preference issues.
So - Thanks for the speedy return/exchange of the iMac. But someone needs to look at this from the programming side of things.

HI, in response to 1_pixelperson, we've returned TWO iMacs with 24 inch screens, both so bright our eyes bugged out ... the current 20 inch is our third computer in 8 days ... he reported specifics
We did find a SCREEN DIMMER app <www.adpartnership.net/DarkAdapted/> ... no solution via Apple ... iPhoto migration funky, dates out of sync, not valid, but thankfully Time Machine really works ... Firefox remains wobbly, not smooth ...
Also, be careful when loading pics from phone with Bluetooth, it sucked my entire address book into my phone.
People at Apple store were nice, today's 20 minute scheduled Genius meeting morphed into two hours+ ... including return ... would have preferred 20 inch with larger HD, came with 320 ... they couldn't do, upgraded ram while there.

  • 6280 screen brightness

My 6280 works o/k except for this abnormal (I think) behaviour.
When a key is pressed or the slide is opened, from keylock, the sreen goes very bright for about one second and then the brightness lowers to the normal level.
Is there anything I can doabout this as I need to wait for the screen brightness to drop to normal brightness before I can read it?

  • Is there a way to save keyboard backlight and screen brightness settings?

It seems like my settings for the keyboard backlight and screen brightness reset to some sort of default after I don't use my macair for an extended period of time.  Is there a way to change these settings so it always stays at what it was last left on?

Are you making the changes through System Preferences?  If not, try that and they should hold.

  • Can't Adjust Screen Brightness MBP 2010

Hi everybody, this issue is driving me nuts!
I've browsed all the sections on this forum and numerous threads and still no dice... Here's my issue:
-I own an late 2010 MacBook Pro (iOS dev machine), which was working perfectly up to the point where I had to update to Mountain Lion 10.8.5
After the update, brightness control on the keyboard is gone (F1 and F2 are duds), also no manual control anywhere else...what gives??
I've done all the SMC reset mumbo-jumbo without any avail....seriously, it sounds like the old fix for windows 98..."just reboot and it will be fine...or not". I also won't accept "go to a genious bar" as answer, since that doens't exist on these parts and any "procedure" over a apple device will take over a month to be done with.
    So my questions are:
1-What where they thinking when they removed the frigging slider from settings?? Do they take us for some sort of idiots that can't be trusted to handle their brightness without using the keyboard?
2-Why can't I change the brightness on my $2500 laptop after a software update? Pray, do explain how this has come to be?
3-Is there any command (using terminal) that I can run to permanently set the brightness level or just to, you know...change it?
4-I'd like to scale this issue with a formal complaint towards apple, I find this to be unacceptable as a customer and I'd like to give them a piece of my mind. Can someone point me out on the proper path to do this?
