T400 / T410 Compatibility Question

Other than the obvious specification differences, what are the effective differences between the T400 and the T410?
The reason I want to know is that for several years I have been using a T60 at work with a T60 at home. I run the OS from the hard drive bay adapter and simply take the adapter home with me rather than pack up the entire laptop. Using this method I simply boot from the hard drive bay adapter to essentially have my work computer at home.
My work has now assigned me a T400, however these are no longer available on the Lenovo website. The T410 offers more features, however I am not sure if I can boot from the drive used in the T400.
I have already found that trying to boot the T400 from the T60 drive simply does not work. I have been unable to even get into a basic windows setting to change the drivers.
Anybody out there know what I am up against?

I have read over the specifications, however there does not seem to be a significant difference between the models. In reading some of the forum entries, many people seem to have strong opinions regarding one model over another.
In example, the T400 has a dual core processor, and the T410 has a single core. The specs are quite clear, however the information does not really tell me much. In general daily use, which one provides an overall better performance?
Is there any information such as this posted anywhere?

I'm having trouble finding media that contains C++ v5.4.-006 for the Unix
box. Does anyone know of/has used higher versions of C++ without too much
drama? How about v5.7 or even v6.1? We will be using extensive C++

T400 & T410 Batteries Compatible?

Title says it all. If I were to get a T410, would I be able to use my T400's 9-cell battery with it?

no they are not compatible, the W510, T410, T510, T400s/T410s use a totally different format batteries to the previous thinkpads.

Monitor Compatibility Question

I plan on purchasing a Mac Pro with the Radeon X1900 XT card in the near future. I have been shopping around for a good monitor, and the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP (found here: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku= 320-4335) caught my eye. However, at the bottom of the tech specs, it lists only PC under "Compatibility." I know of other people who have used Dell monitors for their Macs, and this monitor does have DVI, so I don't see why it would not be compatible with the Mac Pro. Does anyone know definitively whether or not this monitor would work?

You should be just fine. The majority of monitors are listed as compatible with PC's only. The simple reason is that the manufacturers don't care to test them with Macs and have all their resources devoted to supporting what they know.
If they mentioned that it would work with a Mac, then they would be stuck trying to answer your questions on the phone if you needed help. Since they don't use Macs, and don't maintain a staff of Mac trained people, it is easier to just omit official support. That way they can just tell you that they don't support Macs and hang-up the phone.
I've been using PC monitors with my Macs since before Apple even supported PC monitors at all (you used to have to buy monitors with Apple specific cables). I would just use an adapter to convert the PC connector to connect to the Mac video port.
In all my years, I've never found a PC monitor that would not work with my Mac. And, that still holds true today. I've used several low-end monitors with my current machines, and all work fine.
I've even got a bargain basement DVI monitor connected right-now, and it works perfectly.
Basically, if you want official support and a guarantee, then buy a monitor that specifically lists Mac compatibility.
But, if you are willing to accept that their phone support will avoid helping you, then go with any brand you like.
Understand that Dell is primarily interested in selling and supporting Dell computers. They have no interest in fielding calls from Mac users because they are not going to be familiar with OS X. Naturally, they will list PC compatibility because they know Windows very well.
But, you should also understand that the only difference between an Intel-based Mac and an Windows PC, is that the Intel-based Mac can also run OS X. Otherwise, they are just different brands of computers that use pretty much the same hardware.

That would depend on what drive you have installed. The easiest way to check would be to load a burning utility and see what the device capabilities are.

I am deciding on my first IBM, a T400 or T500
I have a few questions concerning the Think Vantage Function:
a) Does the recovery DVD set back the hard drive partitions to factory settings?
b) Does the Think Vantage function set back the hard drive partitions to factory settings?
This means the original size of the partitions, when they have been changed manually.
c) Does Think Vantage work with a self buyed Windows Vista?
d) Does Think Vantage work unter Windows XP
e) Does Think Vantage need drivers/ anything else to work or is it entirly working on the hardware side, so no software/ windows is needed
f)Will Think Vantage work under Windows 7 in a T400/500
g) How was the past situation? Did a under Windows XP working Think Vantage also work on Vista / have there been drivers delivered, when needed, for the new OS
h) Is it possible to set up a new OS (like Vista Ultimate) and then backup it up on a external hard drive and later recover from this?
What do I want to achieve?
I want to recover the factory settings at all times, this means partition size, number of partitions etc. and Windows Vista Business. Then I want to install Vista Ultimate do my settings and backing it up to an external drive or whatever and then recover from that all 3 Months. In the end I should be able to set back factory settings with the earliest/ first backup from Windows Business; Furthermore I might want to install Windows 7 sometimes.

Platform compatibility question(s) from new user!

I'm confused.
I picked up Java a few days ago, with the intention of converting a long-standing JavaScript project that I have to run as an applet. I downloaded and installed the Java2 SDK (1.4) and associated runtime environment, and a simple but good IDE (JCreator 2).... and I'm happily developing applets to my heart's content. Cool language, by the way.
HOWEVER, none of my colleagues (on IE5/5.5 on Win2K/Millenium) can view my resulting efforts. Their browsers complain that they can't find the class. Works on mine, on-line, just not theirs. I've sadly made the assumption that it's because I've installed the 1.4 JRE and they haven't.
I REALLY want to use 1.4 to develop if I can. My JavaScript project that I'm converting is heavily dependant upon regular expression operations, and it would be a pity not to have them available - but platform compatibility is a must; this is a commercial project.
I'm missing something here, and I need to ask some really fundemental questions.
1. I was assuming that most browsers over 4.0 would support "Java2". Just what IS their level of support, by default. I hate new plug-ins, and the Java ones arent trivial!
2. I had thought that any flavour of Java2 (1.2/3/4) would work on the same virtual machine release, and that new features in 1.4 would simply compile to existing bytecode sequences. Am I wrong?
3. If I have to develop for maximum compatibility with earlier browsers, can I do this with 1.4 and some compiler switch, or do I have to download older SDKs?
4. If the worst comes to the worst, is there a class out there that handles regular expression "style" operations that will work on older releases of the language.
Sorry that there's a fair bit there to answer, but since I can't find this info ANYWHERE on the web, I guess I won't be the only newbie facing such issues.

Yeah the Java support in IE is whack. The m$ JVM never got past java 1.1.4 compatability for various reasons. So unless you want users to install the java 2 pluggins, you have to code applets with the java 1.1 api. You can still do this with a java 2 sdk - you just have to watch the parts of the api you use.

import java.<package>.<class>
you are telling the compiler where to find the classes you are about to re-use in your code. You are not including them in your final compiled class files. So when the program runs, it looks for the classes in the classpath. If you use classes that don't exist in an older jvm, the program won't run in that jvm. (Same as if a C or C++ program is dynamically linked to dlls (in Win32) or shared objects on unix - they need to be on the system that the program is executed on.)

T400 SSD Upgrade Question Do I need a new drive caddy? My machine shipped with a 1.8" drive.

I'm planning on upgrading to a larger SSD in my T400. It originally shipped with a 1.8" 64GB Samsung SSD and I'm probably going to upgrade it to a 2.5" 7mm Samsung 840 (non-pro) SSD.
I'm not sure if the current caddy in the T400 is going to fit the new SSD, or if I'll need to purchase the 2.5" caddy. If so, does anyone know the FRU # of the caddy I'll need?

A couple issues to watch out for (x200/t400 generation)':
a) Sandforce drives (Sata Link Power managerment) issues. b) Samsung drives work well (just don't use bios disk passwords, works but confuses bios).
These are based on my experience upgrading my X200s.

OIM Java Compatibility Question

We have OIM 9.1.0.2 BP07 deployed in Weblogic 10.3.0 in test env. Our java version is JDK 1.6.0_10. All our adapters are compiled in this version. We are using this version of java since 1 year.
Now we are moving to production, and we are not able to get exact java version which we used in test env in internet. My question is if I install java which is certified by weblogic 10.3(i.e 1.6.0_05) then will I face any issues in OIM? is it mandatory to use exact version of java from one env to another?

Does not make any difference with sub versions. The version compatibility comes into picture at a higher level like JDK 1.5 or JDK 1.6.
Consider the connector development team, they develop connectors on JDK 1.6 (could be any sub version) and when a customer uses that OOTB connector, they can use any of those sub-versions within JDK 1.6.
Also the fact that if its your custom adapters then you should be aware that what all java functions you are using and I assume it would be the basic ones, so the version difference should not bring in any issues. If its OOTB connector then see the certification matrix as well.

Intel my wifi on T400s & T410

I have a T400s with 5300 and T410 with 6200, but I can not access the option( intel my wifi) in access connection for both of them. Does anyone know how to open it ?

10Gb-10Gb cross-device compatibility questions (PHY-connectors)...

Hi, all, in general, I'm a little surprised at all the PHYsical layer standards running 10Gb Ethernet. This seems to have hindered adoption rate substantially. I have been recently getting questions like can I connect this server chassis to this switch device. or can I connect future-proof the switch deployment now so that it will handle 10Gb firewalls when we buy those. And we have some older 6509e chassis with SUP-720, which don't seem to be able to support SFP+ linecards easily. this is pretty confusing, so just wondering if someone has found a document covering all the PHY-layer interoperability gotcha's.

Questions:
1. What is required for 6509e with VS-SUP720-10G to support SFP+ 10Gb connectors? looks like I need a WS-X6708-10G-3C with a special convertor: CVR-X2-SFP10G? will this WS-X6708-10G-3C run with VS-SUP720-10G?
2. In general, can I always adapt a XenPak/X2 connector to a SFP+ connector somehow with a special dual-end cable?
3. Are there any connector types that will not be compatible with each other? Such as Xenpack wont connect to X2. I could read the matrix, but wondering if anyone ran across any that stick out for them?
4. If I have a cable such as this SFP-H10GB-CU5M= (SFP+ twinax), will that work to connect up a typical server such as HP proliant with an SFP+ NIC, in almost all cases? one reason I ask is that I see the server guys bringing in their SFP+ Direct Copper cables with premade SFP+ ends, and wondering if those will be fine in most cases connecting up to cisco switch side. Or vice versa, if I use the pre-made cisco cable, will it connect to a server NIC? historically, different vendors didn't play nice with regard to these SFP standards. Does this relegate me to pretty much buying cisco SFP+ connectors in some version of fiber, and connect them to the HP-branded SFP+ fiber connectors?
5. what are the future adoption plans for 10GBASE-T (8P8C). It seems like cisco makes a connector (X2-10GB-T), which looks promising. Is anyone using those? Does anyone think that will become the predominate standard in time, like it has for 1GB connections?

Compatibility questions re: OS X Server and new ATA serial HD

The good news: We just got a 500 GB ATA serial HD with some end of year money just as we were running out of space on our 250 GB drive.
The bad news: We have an Xserve G5 running OS X Server 10.3.7 and the hard drive says we need to be running OS X Server 10.4.7 or later.
I checked the Apple Store to see if they had any ATA drives compatible with our version of the OS X software but the only 500 GB serial ATA I found was no longer available. Looking at the 750 GB ATA I can't find any specs as to software compatibility.
Suggestions? I really don't want to spend $1000 to upgrade to OS X 10.4 right now.

Assuming that this is an Apple-branded drive in an Apple sled hardware-wise you should be fine.

3G - 4S Compatibility Questions

I've had my iPhone 3G for almost 3 years and now want to upgrade to the new 4S. I have a couple of questions concerning compatibility between my current phone and the 4S:
Is the charger/docking connector compatible? I use this not only for syncing and charging, but also to connect to my iHome speaker device. I don't want to have to replace the latter as well as all my cables (including the charging cable for my car).
Is the new Bluetooth 4.0 compatible with my current Bluetooth 2? I pair not only with headsets, but also with my car.

No, my statement is correct. Read the first 4 words if the sentence, The APPLE cable is still compatible. Older 3rd party docks may not be.
Although the 1st gen iPhone and iPod touch had FireWire charging capability in the dock connector for compatibility with older cables and docks, the supplied cable was USB and the same as current. Only the 1st gen iPods (circa 2001) were Firewire only.

Pairing Compatability Question?

I was not getting any answers in Bluetooth Thread so moved the question here in hopes of some answers.
I am one who is looking to consolidate headphones/headsets into one unit that will give me phone/music compatability. Once they activate the A2DP on the iPhone, I want to already be able to use one headset.
I am currently seriously considering the Jabra BT8010 Convertable Headset.

IWork Compatibility Question

I recently bought a MacBook Pro for my personal use at home. At work, I have a PC. I would like to be able to bring work home (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and NOT have to bring my PC home also.
My question is: if I bring these types of files home and edit them on my Mac, will I be able to take them back to work and open them on my PC? I know that iWork can open these files, but will it also go the other way?
I am currently trying to get as much input as possible regarding whether to purchase iWork, or to purchase Microsoft Office for Mac. iWork is considerably cheaper, but if trying to make edited documents once-again compatible with my PC is too much of a pain, I would consider the extra cost.

Amazon has a single user Office Mac 2011 Home & Student for $89. I paid $149 at BestBuy almost a year ago so the price is coming down and with MS parading Office 2013 and Web Apps, prices should drop even more. It has everything but Outlook which I've never needed with Mail and iCal. Personally, while iWork works with Office files, I think it might be worth it to get Office. I also work on work files (Office 2003) at home and use Dropbox to sync them.
Simple text will convert to Pages fairly well, but if you use forms or tables, you'll be frustrated with the import/export results. Also stick with standard Office fonts... Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, ect. Generally, the more complex and formatted the Word document, the more screwed up it will be when exported back out from Pages.
I'm not an Excel power user but even I have had formulas not convert to Numbers. Charts work pretty well (depending on the data set) and MS has gone a long way to make them easier to manage in Excel 2011. The only chart problems I've had are certain 3D effects that didn't translate, shadows, and text positioning that had to be redone. One thing I do a lot of that Numbers doesn't support is pivot tables. I had one file Numbers totally froze on while importing, but to be fair it had over 7000 rows and several pivot tables.
I've never used Powerpoint or Keynote so can't tell you anything there. I have seen compatability complaints between the two all over the boards though.
