T400 Thinkvantage software passkey difficulty

A room full of people with laptops can all login to a wireless network with the given password...with ease. My T400's Thinkvantage software has such a tedious bunch of options and drop-downs for the kind of wireless security that you must select, etc. that it takes up to 30 minutes to jump through all the hoops!! This is ridiculous. Do I have to remove the entire bundle of Thinkvantage  software to enable the simpler Windows login? There should be a simpler auto detection to figure out which security setting is used, instead of drilling the user with all the tecnical mystery solving issues associated with a wireless netwrok. In short, this software should be transparent  and just work, instead of having you spend half an hour trying to figure it out, while everyone else is already logged in. Hate the software. Is there an upgrade to it or is this another waste of time?

you mean ThinkVantage Access? or other ThinkVantage Softwares? Which version of the OS are you using?
You don't need to use ThinkVantage Access software in windows if you don't want to, you can delete it.

  • Change OS while maintaining Thinkvantage software

    I have a thinkpad R61 with XP.
So from the looks of it, there are two parts to this whole thinkvantage software:
    1) the stuff that runs in windows - system update, fingerprint, access connections, etc.
    2) the partition with recovery info that you can run by pressing the thinkvantage button during boot, before your OS boots up.
I'd like to switch from xp to vista (yes, i know its crappy, but I have business reasons), but maintain both parts of the thinkvantage technology.
The first part (1) that runs off the OS should be easy, just install the OS, go to the lenovo website and install what i need (or just install system update and let it do the rest).
The second part (2) is what stumps me. I would prefer to do a fresh install (cause upgrades just leave files here and there that take up a bunch of your hard disk space). Is there anyway I could maintain part 2 after the OS change?
It would be even better if I could upgrade the thinkpad recovery partition as well so after the os change, if I ever did a recover from the boot menu it would recover to my new OS (vista) not xp.
    Any help/ideas greatly appreciated,
    Thanks!

Some of the TVT software has different version from XP to Vista, so a clean install is a good way to go.  Install Vista then run TVSU to grab which updates you want.
As for the recovery partition, the only way would be to recover the system using the Vista preload recovery CDs.  But unless your system came with Vista originally and then downgraded to Vista, you don't have a license for Vista so legally, Lenovo can't provide the Vista recovery CDs.  What I would suggest is to use Rescue and Recovery to take a base backup of your system once you get everything installed and working.  That way if something happens you can return to that image as your "factory install" image.

  • Previous Version of ThinkVantage software

I  urgently need the old versions of ThinkVantage softwares which support my T42. (ONLY new versions available on the Lenovo website which do not support T42.)
    Please help.
    thanks.

    simongg, welcome to the forum,
if you have a factory installation you will find all the original drivers and utilities in the folder C:\IBMTOLS. These were installed from the factory at the time of production.

  • Bought an X60 off ebay with no thinkvantage software help???

    Thank you firstly:
As the title says I bought an x60 thinkpad from ebay and they obviously had formatted the hard drive and just put a fresh xp install on. I would like to activate the ThinkVantage feature incase I need to recover the system. I am completely out of my depth here so any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Hello,
You can begin by downloading ThinkVantage System Update software, which will examine your installation of Microsoft Windows and download any missing device drivers and ThinkVantage software when run.

  • Errors in ThinkPad Bios and Thinkvantage Software

I have been using my ThinkPad T61 model 7664-A24 for almost 6 months now and have noticed quite a few errors in the bios and Thinkvantage software.
    1. Bios:
Security>Passwords>Passphrase is grayed out and has no functionality.
    2. Bios:
Security>Passwords>Password Reset Service: The instructions in the description window to the right tell us to go to 'Create Recovery Media' in Windows>ThinkVantage and set up password reset service to recover power-on or hard disk password in case of loss. However there is no such thing in Thinkvantage>Create Recovery Media.
    3. Predesktop Rescue and Recovery workspace:
The documentation when you click 'Configuration Overview'  relating to setting up a password to protect the Rescue and Recovery predesktop environment is wrong - Method 1 and Method 3 of creating this password in Client Security Solution and Rescue and Recovery respectively do not exist.
While these errors do not impede the functionality the ThinkPad, I wish Lenovo would tighten up the screws. I can't understand how such a big company could be so sloppy. The bios should not have any dependency on external software but here some bios functions are dependent on RnR in Windows? I've tried removing the RnR and CSS program but the bios 'Password Reset Service' option remains. I hope Lenovo issues updates to fix these errors.
I will mention more errors in the lenovo software in this thread as I find them.

  • Install ThinkVantage software

I wiped my T61 and then installed Windows 7. Can I download ThinkVantage software, and if so, how? For instance, could I download ThinkVantage Productivity Center for Vista (3.11) and then the ThinkVantage System Update for Windows 7 (4.0.0024)? Are there other useful updates that should be installed, eg BIOS?, Windows 7 Update Modules?
    Thanks for any advice.

  • T400 - Bluetooth Software - Unattended Install instructions/procedure required.

    Hi all,
This is technically not a problem but an information request.
I need the info because it will save me making a more clunky solution and I know that it exists because the factory preload must have used SOME method to get this working automatically.
I know I have written a lot but its all relevant and I dont want someone from Lenovo to have to ask me three times for missing info so I have listed everything.
    BASIC SCENARIO
    ThinkPad T40 [6474-R1U]
    Windows XP Corp w/ SP2 <NOT THE FACTORY PRELOAD OR A DERIVATIVE>
I have two T400 "prototypes" to work with in making the current corporate image work on this platform.
One has the test corporate image and one has the XP factory preload installed on it.
The SATA, sysprep, drivers, webcam-reboot-issue, etc have all been fixed and its gotten to a point where the Device Manager is clean as a whistle and no errors.
I am not new to this as our corporate image is my sole responsibility and it works perfectly on 7 different hardware platforms, 4 of which are laptops.
At the end of the re-image, the following software will be "silently" installed in the specified order ONLY if the system is detected to be a 6474-class Lenovo.
        [1] ACPI Power Management                    SETUP.EXE -S -SMS    N/A
        [2] Hotkey Utility                           SETUP.EXE /S         N/A
        [3] Lenovo System Interface Driver           SETUP.EXE /S         N/A
        [4] Keyboard Customizer Utility              SETUP.EXE -S -SMS    [1] & [2]
        [5] Presentation Director                    SETUP.EXE -S -SMS    [1] & [2] & [3]
        [6] ThinkVantage Access Connections          SETUP.EXE -S -SMS    [1] & [2]
        [7] Power Manager                            SETUP.EXE -S -SMS    N/A
[8] Bluetooth Enhanced Data Rate Software    N/A                  N/A
All drivers are from Lenovo, the second field is the silent install command line and the third is the dependency table.
    BASIC PROBLEM
As you can see, I dont have a method to do the silent install of the Bluetooth software.
I have tried SETUP.EXE -S -SMS and SETUP.EXE /S in the main folder and the Win32 sub-folder of the driver folder but no dice.
It doesnt do anything and leaving it sitting there for a while and then rebooting doesnt show the Bluetooth software installed after the reboot so I know it isnt working.
The SETUP.EXE -S -SMS switch is common to all software that uses InstallShield for installation as opposed to Lenovo proprietary software which uses the /S switch and the Bluetooth sofware DOES use InstallShield but the silent switch doesnt work.
The link on the website for the Bluetooth driver software is the ONLY driver I encountered that didnt list a silent method of installing it and there is no SW1.XML file in the driver folder either. I am pretty sure that the SW1.XML file is the file that the factory preload uses to install software after the PCI device enumeration.
Doing it manually [Setup.exe,Next,Next, etc,Finish] works like a charm and doesnt even require a reboot as the drivers were automatically installed during the Mini-Setup portion after the sysprep/re-image.
The best option would be for someone from Lenovo to let me know the command I need to run to get the silent option to install the Bluetooth software.
A secondary option would be for Lenovo to help me with the following in terms of procedure or just giving me the CMD files mentioned below.
On the laptop that has the factory preload, the swtools folder contains the drivers installed on that model and it has the same Bluetooth driver as on the website in that it has no SW1.XML or unattended information.
I came across the following file in its root folder which has some interesting info: c:\swtools\modules.log
Almost at the beginning are these entries
? evaluating filters for 4gglw6a1 - thinkpad bluetooth software for helike
    ? - filter returned true
? filter expression result is true
? evaluating filters for 4glth2a1 - thinkpad ms bluetooth inf for helike - copy only - lc
    ? - filter returned true
? filter expression result is true
searching for blue, the following entries much later in the file reference the ones above....
    Thu 12/11/2008 23:04:28.84 Starting c:\swwork\other\4gglw6a1.cmd
    ThinkPad Bluetooth Software for Helike
    Thu 12/11/2008 23:06:12.29 Finished c:\swwork\other\4gglw6a1.cmd
    Thu 12/11/2008 23:16:21.34 Starting c:\swwork\network\4glth2a1.cmd
ThinkPad MS Bluetooth INF for Helike - Copy Only - LC
    Thu 12/11/2008 23:16:21.46 Finished c:\swwork\network\4glth2a1.cmd
Obviously having these CMD files at hand would be nice but the folder swwork referenced there doesnt exist as it was probably deleted after the preload process was completed.
I have a Ghost image of the factory preload when its "fresh" on the hard drive and hasnt been booted up even once.
I made it right after I slapped the pre-load on but before I booted it the first time.
I can re-image that laptop with that image and pause it before the deletion of that folder if it would help in me seeing the file in DOS [Winternals Remote Recover] but I would still need to know when to stop it, etc.
    Thanks in advance. :-)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

So to be clear what command-line did you use for
[8] Bluetooth Enhanced Data Rate Software    N/A                  N/A
And what setup file? How do you activate BT when you can't activate it with FN+F5 when you receive a new machine and you must deploy an image on it?
    Is it this:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70443.html#bluetooth
    v5.5.0.5800 from 29 jan 2009
I see that there is a Bluetooth Support File v1.00 from 2 june 2008 that is also needed or not? It's in the Vista categorie but when you open it, you can see in the readme file that there is also an explanation to install on xp

  • X301 missing Lenovo Thinkvantage software after OS re-instal

    Hi all,
The saga of the X301 OS re-instal continues :-)
Everything is seemingly operating as a base lap top, however the lap top after the re-install does not contain it's IBM/Lenovo specific software.
    Examples:
    1. Thinkvantage blue button not functioning
    2. Internet connection is done solely through Windows and not the IBM network connection
    3. Mouse mat works but the scroll page up and across functionality has been lost
    4. Sometimes when typing it shoots the cursor off down the page
I have nothing on the system (hardware) stating that it requires a driver.
    Any help or assistance appreciated.

  • T400 thinkvantage system health and diagnostics reading memory speed as 667 not 1066

Hi, just got a T400 2765-T6U (fresh install win 7 IBM genuine install) on ebay and it is listed as having 3gb of DDR3 PC-3 8500 1066 ram. but when I run the thinkvantage system health and diagnostics program the scan says: memory DDR2 667 Mhz.
I am certain that the installed ram is DDR-3 8500 because I looked at it.
My concern is that for some reason even though the computer has the faster memory it is not running at the 1066 clock speed.
PS >I cant install any other software because I am returning it to the seller as it has a bad spot on the screen. He is offering a replacement but it will be an exact replacement so I really need to know why this reading is incorrect. I may ask for cash back.because of this reading. I dont understand why the thinkvantage system health and diagnostics is saying DDR2 667 Mhz and not DDR3 1066 Mhz (which IS installed)..
Is the Thinkvantage program giving me a false reading?
Is there anywhere else in the compuer OS that I can see the memory details and clock speed?
The Bios only shows the amout of Ram.
    Thanks!

use HWinfo32 to check the ram speed.

  • ETA for Windows 8 Thinkvantage software and drivers?

    Hello,
I realize Windows 8 just went gold at the beginning of the month, but what is the release plan for drivers and software for the ThinkPads?  I'll have the released product next Wednesday when it hits the MSDN download center.
Are we going to have to wait until general availability + 30 days or what?  That would be after Thanksgiving.
I am mostly interested in Power Manager, power management driver, hotkey support, and a few other things. What is Lenovo shooting for as a release plan?
    Thanks,

  • Multiple Thinkvantage Software Applications Malfunctioning

    Hello Lenovo Community,
    I have a Thinkpad W510 running on Windows 7 (4391-A72).
Just only a few days ago, I booted up my computer from a shut down state to find out that Power Manager has malfunctioned, with the following symptoms:
-Optical Drive no longer powers down on its own
-Battery Gauge in the Windows 7 Taskbar does not display anything, just a grey bar as if no battery is plugged in, even when I plug in a battery. No battery percentages or remaining times are displayed in the taskbar either.
-When the Power Manager is opened, and the battery page is selected, the text box which is supposed to display the following message:
"The battery is in a good condition.
135 W AC adapter is attached. (only if the adapter is plugged in)"
does not display at all. Also, the battery percentage does not update or refresh from time to time when the battery charge percentage changes.
I was thinking that it might have something to do with the Lenovo Power Management Driver, so I uninstalled it using the Control Panel, and I reinstalled from the Lenovo Website, but this does not solve the problem. I want to uninstall Power Manager but there is no option to do so! This program isn't listed under "Programs and Features"...
Reinstalling power manager from the Lenovo Website also fails to solve this issue.
Ironically, I figured that this might not be a Power Management Driver problem, because of the following result (I could still be wrong, please correct me if that is the case)
-System continues to obey the standby and hibernation timers set through Power Manager.
    -Microphone Mute is still working.
Also, the problem is not just with Power Manager, I also have an issue with The Thinkvantage System Update software. When I ran it to try to fetch a new update for Power Manager, upon fetching new updates the progress stops at 9% to display the following error:
    "Could not gather user information."
System update then closed on me.
Having encountered this problem before, I went to download a fresh copy from the Lenovo Website and performed a clean reinstallation. During uninstallation I was prompted to remove files then could not be safely deleted by the installer and I acceded to this request.
Unfortunately, reinstalling the program made it worse. Now when I try to start system update, the following error message pops up:
"System update could not start properly."
And then it closes on me.
I am not sure if this caused by the new layout of the Lenovo Download Website, as it no longer differentiates its systems by series and sub-model number, which enhanced the specificity of the kind of firmware, drivers and applications that I was getting. I might be getting incompatible versions of software or drivers... so I don't know.
I used to be able to solve the Thinkvantage System Update issue previously, but that was merely because there was an upgrade of the System Update version available. Now, obviously there isn't. Is there going to be a new version of Thinkvantage System Update to replace the older version?
I am really sorry for this lengthy post but it is by far extensive and verbose. It should be enough for someone to provide some start to a solution. Is something wrong with my fdiagnosis or is it another pertinent issue?
If you guys need any additional information, feel free to say so

    Solved!

    Dear sclexman,
    Thanks for your reply.
I will try to answer each of your queries:
Did you make any changes on your system, prior to these new issues (power manager and system update)?
    -Hardware: NO
-Software & Drivers: YES, minor Windows Security Updates for July and August 2014. Bluetooth driver update installed using an offline package downloaded directly from Lenovo's website. Windows Non-Unicode Setting changed from English (Singapore) -> Japan (Japanese) (I am running some Japanese applications which require them.)
Try to uninstall SU via control panel, program and features.
-Re-tried this multiple times with the same error. Changed the system non-unicode setting back to English Singapore but this did not work either.
NOTE the installed version. Is is really 5.06?
-Yes, control panel reports the installed version as 5.06.0016.
Download Su  5.06.16  from the website. DO NOT LET IT self update.
-The installer strictly originated from the Lenovo Singapore Drivers and Support Site, nowhere else. Furthermore, the installer never got to self-update, because it already halted at "System Update could not start properly."
Make sure you have netframework 4.0 and above installed (4.5.1 is current)..
-.NET framework 4.5.1 has always been there, I occasionally do developer work which requires .NET Framework 4.5.1 to be present.
Visual C ++2012 x86 and x64 will also solve some issues (get from microsoft.com).
-I will get this Microsoft and I will see if it works.
    If SU will not install/uninstall:
     http://support.microsoft.com/mats/program_install_and_uninstall
-The installation had no problems, EXCEPT that when I uninstall, I will be told by the installer that the installer could not delete some files, and prompts me for a brute-force deletion. I allow it to do so.
During each step, check the MSI return code at the bottom of the install log"
    C\users\*yourid\appdata\local\temp
    ==
If su gets installed ok, run  su.  If you get a error screen, we will have to look  in some logs buried inside SU folders.
-No need. I have configured Group Policy to provide installation-end access to the Windows Installer Log when the installation is finished. I will post the log within the next few days (as I am busy and cannot attend to this matter now) and let you know the diagnostic.
Thank you very much for working on this issue with me, and I really need the support.

  • T400 - Thinkvantage Access Connections not connecting after sleep/hibernate

I have a relatively new T400 for work - and there are no problems connecting wirelessly at work.  However, I have set up my home wireless network, and I have problems.
When I power up my laptop, I can create a Connection Profile for my home network - and it connects no problem.  However, if I let the laptop go to sleep, it will not reconnect upon waking up.  Using the diagnostics, I get 3 errors - (a) make sure your encryption settings are correct for this network (it connected before, so they are)
    (b) contact network adminstrator (that's me)
    (c) your profile is on the same channel as an active network (yup - mine)
The only solution appears to be to delete the profile, reboot the PC, and recreate the profile.
Windows XP Pro, Thinkvantage Access COnnections 5, Intel 5100 wireless card (and T400 as I indicated earlier).
    Any tips?
    Thx,

All of hte MS updates are applied.  I have tried the Thinkvantage System Update utility, but it does not work (System Update 3).  When I start it, I get the splash screen for the program, and after a few minutes the splash screen disappears; when I check teh taks manager, the system update tool is not listed in the Applications tab.

  • T400 Fingerprint Software in Windows 7 no longer working

A few days ago, after the usual windows 7 upgrade, the fingerprint prompt to swipe any enrolled finger just disappeared.
After several attempts of reinstalling of the fingerprint software what worked is as follows:
    - From the control panel, Programs and Features, uninstall both the windows driver package and the lenovo fingerprint software;
    - Download and install the latest lenovo fingerrpint software from the Lenovo support site;
    - After the restart, you will be prompted to enroll one or more of your fingers.  I was able to enroll one but then later I got an error message "cannot communicate with sensor" or something like it.
    - What I did is to go to the control panel, device manager, then pointed to the authentec device and chose properties.  Uncheck the box which says something like "allow the computer to switch off device to save on power".
    - Then chose from the control panel, Lenovo's Fingerprint Reader and proceeded with the enrollment without any issues.
    - Restarted the system, and it worked as smoothly as before.  BTW, enrolled six fingers, three on each hand.

i would believe it might be the limiting of the number of programs during startup.
do a msconfig and configure it to startup only windows item only. See if this makes any diference

  • Thinkpad W520- need some help with re-installing/identifying thinkvantage software

Hi, after a month or so of trying out different operating systems, I decided I'd go back to windows. I installed windows 8 back onto my machine, but the problem now is that I lack access to the utilities I had before I wiped the drive. I've gotten most of the software back on (such as battery manager), but I'm still looking for the software or a method that enables the fn f6 shortcut for microphone options.
    Thanks

If any of your devices are running iOS7 then you need to use iTunes 11.1.1.
Using system restore can confuse the process of adding or removing software. Always use the supplied installer/removal process if possible.
Sometimes it may be necessary to reboot after adding or removing one component before the next can be added or removed.
Manually deleting files or registry entries is likely to make the problem more complicated, not less so, particularly if Windows still things the software is installed.
If an installer still won't complete try starting Windows in safe mode.
