T400 troubles

I'm having a vast amount of troubles with my T400. And by troubles, I mean hardware issues, since software problems can be easily fixed by myself.
Here's the specs on my ThinkPad:
Model 2764-CTO (bought through Lenovo Canada)
- C2D T9400 @ 2.53GHz, 6MB L2
- ATI HD3470/Intel GMA X4500 hybrid graphics
- 2GB DDR3, 1 DIMM
- 160GB 5400rpm HDD
- DVDRW
- Intel Wifi Link 5100
- Integrated BT
- Webcam
- Fingerprint reader
Yes, I'm sure I have all the latest drivers already, I'm pretty sure what's just happened to me is a hardware issue. When I'm using the integrated Intel GMA on my T400, I can see plenty of red pixels covering the screen - not in one giant block, but only in certain places, almost like artifacts in appearance. It's only present when I use the Intel graphics, and is much more visible when the machine is cold, as in resuming from suspend after being in suspend for a few hours or from a cold boot after it's been sitting for a few hours. This problem is not present at all when I am using the discete ATI graphics.
What troubles me is that Lenovo support wants me to send it in to the depot for repair again. I don't wish to, given the newness of this notebook and the troubles I've had with depot repair in the past with this notebook. I've already had the motherboard replaced once because of a fan or controller failure - I'm pretty sure it was a controller failure as I spent three weeks with an extremely loud T400 that kept on alternating between high and low fan speed. It took nearly forever to fix my notebook and ship it back.
So right now I'm trying to escalate to someone who can actually help me to get decent service on this T400. I will admit that this is fairly self-centred, as I'm only entitled to depot warranty, but I am 15 years old, and what teenager isn't self-centred? If possible, I'd like a new machine with upgraded specs as compensation for my wasted time, or an upgrade to 5 year onsite warranty with the ability to further extend so I can get proper support when the machine breaks (I've now accepted hardware failure as a fact of life... pretty sad.) I, myself, definitely think that I deserve a new system or better warranty because of the troubles I've been having. See the below timeline:
Timeline:
08/21 - Order system
09/05 - Shipped
09/17 - Received (time spent waiting for machine: 28 days)
09/19 - Fan/controller problem shows up (time spent with a good working machine: less than 2 days)
09/20 - My first call to Lenovo support
After my first call, my case has to be recreated no less than 4 times before I get sent an EZserv box
10/02 - EZserv box shipped
10/09 - EZserv box received (time spent with a defective machine: 21 days)
10/09 - I ship my machine back in the EZserv box
After it gets to the depot, it takes many calls about the status and a call to the manager before the machine is fixed and sent back to me.
10/22 - I receive the machine again (time spent without ThinkPad: 14 days)
11/23 - Graphics problem shows up (total time spent with a good working machine, counting my initial 2 days: 34 days)
11/24 - I call, and have been trying to get hold of a manager ever since. (time spent with defective machine and counting: 23 days)
As you can see, I've been waiting for a good machine a lot more than I actually have been using a good machine. I've "had" the machine for 71 days so far, not counting the wait before that, but only 34 of those days have been with a good working machine. The other 23 I've been dealing with a defective machine, and for 14 days I haven't had a laptop at all!
I bought the T400 because I've had good experience with ThinkPads in the past - I've had the pleasure of owning a used T21 and a used R50e. Both were great machines; quiet, well built, reliable. The performance didn't meet my requirements anymore, so I decided to finally splurge on myself and buy myself a good ThinkPad - one that would last me through to at least the first or second year of university.
I bought it because of the good specs on paper.
I bought it because my friends have enjoyed their Lenovo-manufactured T61s, as the ones I've seen were every bit as great as the old ThinkPads manufactured outside of China (not that I have anything against products made in China; I'm Chinese, so I see absoutely nothing wrong with things being made in China so long as the quality control is good.)
I bought it because I thought I would be getting a business-grade machine, like my rackmounted Dell PowerEdge 860, which has been running almost 24/7 from day 1 and is still going strong, with 453 days of uptime now.
The aforementioned splurge cost me the majority of my personal savings, and what do I get? A machine that doesn't perform half the time. This is not what I expected from a ThinkPad. This kind of unreliability is not what I want, and it's not what I need either. I also have no more money left to buy another notebook. If someone at Lenovo is reading this, please consider either of my two suggestions: 1) give me a new notebook, with better specs or 2) give me 5 year onsite warranty. At least give me a callback, so I can decide what I should do.
/endrant
Sorry, that ended up longer than I expected. If anyone from Lenovo wishes to contact me, PM or email will do.

Hi Richard,
I joined because I just needed some place to rant - hopefully I can draw the distinction between ranting and trolling, as neither are particularly desirable on forums, but the latter will bring a ban upon me. I also hoped to draw the attention of some Lenovo employees.
I think the answer to my situation lies in point #1 and #2 in your post - I got a lemon, and I've always been unlucky when it comes to notebooks. I managed to kill my T21 by CRC1'ing the motherboard by turning it off while it was POSTing - foolish on my part, as a BIOS update would have prevented that. Then when the R50e came to me, it had a cracked LCD and I replaced it. Cost me something like $120 for a used panel, and I was decently happy with it after that. Then the hard drive died, likely because it was already damaged from the shock that killed the LCD, and since it was too big for my tastes anyway (it was a 15" model), so I bought a used Dell Latitude D600 for $200. It worked fine for a while - then structural failure - frame cracked, hinge snapped into multiple pieces - maybe it was because it got bounced around in my suitcase on a flight within mainland China? In any case, even though that thing had a magnesium alloy frame, it was far too flimsy compared to my prior ThinkPads. I ended up basically epoxy'ing the frame back together and buying a new screen hinge for it. It still functions, but I lent it out... which is why I don't have any spare machines to use while my ThinkPad is gone. I thought my ThinkPad would be different - and it is, in terms of structure, it's pretty much the most solid machine I've ever used - but I just seem to be unlucky and always have things fail on me.
I bought mine for almost the same reasons as you did - long battery life, solid reputation, and power (video encoding flies with the T9400.)
As for #3, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

  • Trouble reinstalling XP on T400

I just got a T400 with XP Pro installed on it. But my friend (whom this laptop is for) needs the Chinese XP, so i try reinstalling windows from scratch, but everytime after the initial driver loading process with the blue background the computer goes to BSOD, with STOP: 0x0000007B, which i found to be a harddrive thing. then i try doing the installing 3rd party driver thing, and turns out that the setup program can't detect any Harddrives at all!!
Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I am pretty experienced with computer setups but this really has me stomped.
    Thanks in advance!!

I had this problem once before, where the OS image could not see the HDD - Changing the SATA controller mode option selection within the BIOS config menu from "AHCI" to "Compatibility" - did the trick.

  • T400 Graphics Card Trouble

I am having the same error occur with my graphics card in the T400 multiple times.
It goes into an infinite loop, and then goes to blue screen, saying that the graphics card has gone into an infinite loop and the system has been shut down for protection ect...
Is it possible that this is due to overheating? the T400 always seems to be very hot when this happens.

the heatsink/heatpipe associated with the GPU is located under the keyboard, so if you take off the Keyboard then you should be fine. However, don't remove the heatsink assembly, as this will void your laptop warranty.

  • R400/T400/T500/W500: display driver "amdkmdap" crashes

Executive summary: All current Lenovo ThinkPads with switchable graphics (R400, T400, T500, and W500) have usability issues in connection with Vista and the use of external monitors. For more than half a year, users were plagued by frequent Windows crashes. During that time frame, Lenovo did not comment on the various available reports and complaints. By the end of April 2009, Lenovo resolved many issues by releasing a new official driver. Though several problems, including severe ones, remain as of today. Lenovo has said to be actively working on the remaining issues (without outcomes so far).
Important information for affected users: If you're having one of the issues reported here, then Lenovo advises you to call your local Lenovo Support. Demand that a case is submitted to hardware engineering. In particular, you should ask for "a CMVC case to be created and escalated". Using these "code words" ensures that your case is properly addressed.
    Old problem description
On Vista 32 and Vista 64, the ATI display driver "amdkmdap" crashes when an external monitor was active before OR an application (game) using DirectX technology is used. The user typically receives a couple of so-called "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) messages from Vista:
(Click here for an explanation of the message from Microsoft)
Sometimes, amdkmdap crashes several times in a row. Then Windows crashes with a so-called "BSOD", likely resulting in data loss. Typically, Windows detects "atikmpag.sys" as the crashing driver. Sometimes, also an instantaneous reboot happens independent of prior TDR crashes. In such a case, no BSOD is displayed.
The following movie illustrates the phenomenon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBX9QsCmrpY
This behavior above has been confirmed for the following ThinkPad models: R400, T400, T500, and W500 (see below). Problem reports indicate that the symptoms are often related to playing games and/or the notebook being docked and the external monitor being connected via DVI.
Though, the presence of these two conditions is not necessary to trigger the driver crash:
There are reports where no dock was involved and the external monitor was connected directly to the notebook's VGA port.
Furthermore, there are reports where the notebook was docked and an external monitor was connected to the DVI port.
So far, there has been no report relating to a monitor being connected to the Display Port which is available on some models. (Possibly because this port is not used.)
There are a few reports where neither a dock nor an external monitor was involved.
Playing certain games reliably triggers the crash.
    Steps to reproduce
While intially (around September 2008 - October 2008) the crash could be triggered easily, the situation is now (December 2008) more complex. The crashes do still occur, though there is no clear pattern anymore. According to various reports, the display driver crash can be triggered as follows:
    Resuming from standby
    Watching a DVD.
Playing one of these games: Fallout 3, Bioshock, Team Fortress 2, Knights of the Old Republic.
Arbitrarily during normal work. On a normal working day, the problem occurs at least once.
    Further issues
Here are more issues which seem to be related. More information can be found in other posts of this thread:
The notebook display and/or the external monitor runs at a low resolution after resuming from standby.
After the login both monitors flicker while adjusting the resolution of the monitor.
The external monitors cannot be activated using Presentation Director.
The external monitor is blank after docking or undocking.
There are some reports about display driver crashes on machines running Windows XP.
The switchable graphics drivers limit the useable RAM under Vista 32 to 2.5GB (i.e. 500MB-1GB less than usual).
    Workarounds
Lenovo has released a new "tip" document which provides a link to a new driver. Get it here but be sure to read the instructions!
(Old tips follow below the line. Consider them as obsolete.)
Here are some tips which might make the problem occur less often. I have not tried all of them. Though, A. and B. have improved the situation for me; your mileage may vary.
    A. If you do not have to use an external monitor, then switch to Intel graphics for time being.
    Otherwise:
    B. Make some changes to your system:
    Disable Aero.
Create a new profile in the power manager with the following setting: When running on AC, turn off the monitor after 40 minutes. (Thereby, the notebook goes less often to standby.)
    Install the newest graphics drivers.
    Install the newest BIOS.
    Install the newest Hotkey utility.
    Install the newest drivers.
    C. Disable the switchable graphics in the BIOS setup and install modded drivers from ATI (see zilla's post in this thread for instructions).
The last workaround (C.) has been confirmed to work reliably by several users. Though, thereby you use drivers which have not been tested by Lenovo. It's possible (but not very likely) that damage results by doing so. Also, it might be difficult to install a future Lenovo driver which resolves the issues reported here. Finally, you cannot use the power-saving Intel graphics. Thus, you should only use this workaround if you know what you are doing.
The programs can be downloaded from the following locations. Notice that System Update does not always offer you immediately the lastest versions.

The contract was going to go to Lenovo. He mumbled something about HP when I asked him about the state of affairs with my PC... "honestly it is completely unacceptable for lenovo to have done nothing this long. I paid extra to get the ATI card, and now I can't hook up my laptop to an external monitor without it crashing. I will probably end up selling the laptop soon since using an external monitor is extremely important to me and lenovo doesn't seem to care about fixing the situation."

    Original post
    Hi there!
I have major troubles using a Dell 2709W monitor with my T400.
The notebook is attached to a Advanced Mini Dock to which the monitor is connected via DVI.
     The problems are as follows.
    A. Activating the external monitor often fails
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Attach a Dell 2709W via DVI to an Advanced Mini Dock which is connected to a T40
    2. Start Windows and make sure that the T400 is running on the ATI card.
=> Dell monitor enters power saving mode because no signal is coming.
    3. In Windows use either the Presentation Director, Windows, or the ATI tools to activate the Dell monitor.
Expected result: The Dell monitor is activated and the Windows desktop is shown on it.
Actual result: It takes 1-3 seconds for the Dell monitor to display something. The monitor shows the Windows desktop for a short period. Then it's black again and the monitor returns to the power saving mode .
Analysis: It seems that the Presentation Director, Windows, or the ATI tools (or more aptly, I guess, the ATI driver) expect a quick response from the DVI-port that a monitor is present. If they do not receive the response, the DVI-port is deactivated again. Since the monitor is too slow to respond and enters the power saving mode too quickly, the monitor can hardly ever be activated.
Suggested change: Change these tools (or the ATI driver) so that they wait longer for a response on the DVI-port.
    B. Resuming from monitor sleep causes Windows to fall back to a low resolution if the Dell monitor was activated before
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Attach a Dell 2709W via DVI to an Advanced Mini Dock which is connected to a T400
    2. Start Windows and make sure that the T400 is running on the ATI card.
    3. Select the Energy Star profile
    4. Activate the Dell monitor
    5. Don't use Windows until the notebook display and the Dell monitor are set to sleep by Windows.
    6. Wake up the displays (e.g. by pressing some keys)
Expected result: Both displays are run in the display mode as before.
Actual result: The Dell monitor still sleeps. The notebook displays is run at a lower resolution (I guess 800x600). The Windows login prompt is not visible and it has to be guessed that it is shown. Though the typical Windows login background is visible. If the password is entered, then Windows can be used again. Though, the resolution is still low and the Dell monitor still sleeps.
Analysis: It seems that by sending the Dell monitor to sleep, the monitor deactivates the DVI-interface or enters a low-power interface mode. This seems to disturb some component in Windows (the Presentation Director, Windows, the ATI tools, the ATI driver) in a way that Windows only activates the notebook display when it resumes from "monitor sleep".
Suggested change: Change these tools (or the ATI driver) so that they can cope with the situation that the DVI-interface is deactivated and wait longer for the interface to be in a useable state. Reactivate an external monitor even if it "sleeps very deeply".

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Lenovo support made me reinstall presentation director to rule out this component as a factor. After the reinstallation, the amdkmdap-problem is still present. Letting Windows go to standby and waking the system up afterwards, is a reliable method in my case to reproduce the problem on condition that an external monitor was active. The problem does not occur if no external monitor is present.
A web search for "amdkmdap", "atikmpag","BSOD" with one of the ThinkPad-series names (like "T400") shows that other persons also have this problem with R400s, T400s, T500s, and W500s:

    - Lenovo ThinkPad T400 - some impressions.
    - T400 freezes with graphics Intense programes

    Some possibly related Non-Lenovo cases:
    - Why Vista crashes so often when dual display is enabled?
    - Vista and 7.3 Display driver atikmdag stopped responding error
    - 4870 vista x64 multi-mon = atikdmag BOOM
In the cases in which people observe the "amdkmdap"-problem and describe the circumstances, the use of an external monitor is always a factor. These other reports also indicate that it is likely not an issue with the hardware of my notebook (or then a general problem for many batches of these machine types). For it happens a) on many systems and b) on different kinds of systems.
If others want to contribute to the problem solution, then we should provide Lenovo and ATI a good problem description. So, please add your description.

  • Thinkpad T400 with Vista OS won't start up

    Hello all,
I'm a relatively non-proficient computer user with a T400 that is having some issues with starting up all the way.  For some background, this is a pretty old computer obviously, and has had its share of trouble already.  It has had one battery die and one hard drive die.  Lately, it has been sporadically over-heating and turning itself off.  I wouldn't be surprised if my present dilemma is the result of multiple interacting problems, but I would really appreciate if anyone could help me out.
My laptop is set to hibernate when it's closed, and today when I opened it up it was just a black screen - not a black screen like the computer was off, but like the black screen shown during start-up when no words are shown.  This wasn't alarming to me because I often have to turn the computer off via the power button and then turn it back on, because opening the screen sometimes doesn't seem to force it out of hibernation.  But when I did it today, I started getting this problem.
If I press the power button and then do nothing, it goes through the initial boot stages and eventually comes to a "Windows failed to start" Windows Error Recovery screen, suggesting that I launch Startup Repair.  If I do launch startup repair, I get to the "System Recovery Options" window but there are no operating systems listed.  When I click "Next" I'm informed I must log in to access System Recovery Options, and then I'm forced to restart, repeating the process.  On the other hand, if I select to Start Windows Normally, I get that same blank black screen.
I am able to access BIOS.  Here's what I have tried so far -
    1. Burning Lenovo Diagnostics (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&DocID=DS025448) to a bootable CD and attempting to run it on the T400.  The T400 won't boot from the CD.  I definitely burned it as an .iso file, and I sent the DVD-RAM drive up to the front of the boot order, and I also tried pressing F12 and selecting the drive specifically.  I also changed SATA Controller Mode to "Compatability" - I don't know what that means, but I read it as a possible solution.  No matter what I have tried, I hear some whirring from the CD drive during start-up, but then it stops and I end up at the same Windows Error Recovery screen.
    2. HDD diagnostic program in BIOS.  When I do this, the test doesn't progress at all and I get "Error code 0000: Read verification failed."
Any ideas?  I've been thinking it may be time for a new laptop, but if there's a possibility of prolonging this laptop's life then I feel I might as well.  Thanks in advance for your help.
Edit: Another thing I noticed is that a lot of people have T400 start-up issues due to a broken USB port.  I do have a broken port, but I made sure that none of the pins are touching each other or either side.  So I don't think that's the problem either.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That drive is going bad, and fast. Read verification failure usually indicates a rather deadly flaw.
You *might* be able to insert the drive into an USB enclosure and get the files from it on another PC, but it should be done sooner than later.
Time to start shopping for a new hard drive or SSD.
    Good luck.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Lenovo T400 (4500MHD): Xorg 7.4, xf86-video-intel-2.4.3 upgrade

    hi!
I would like to ask you if anyone with an lenovo t400 has done a successful upgrade to xorg 7.4 with xf86-video-intel-2.4.3 and intel-dri-7.2-1. I'm still using xf86-video-intel-2.3.2-1 and intel-dri-7.0.3-1, though I'm not completely satisfied with it (sometimes X does not start, suspend doesn't work anymore).
I've read a lot about upgrading troubles and I would really appreciate sharing your experience.
    thanks in advance,
    woifi

    woifi,
I have the same machine and the upgrade to Xorg and xf86-video-intel make my machine not able to come back from a suspend/hibernate. The screen comes back, but everything is frozen. I have been able, however, to use the "vesa" driver in Xorg and get suspend/hibernate to work then. I can't use Compiz then, but I would rather have suspend than Compiz at this point. I'm hoping that the novelty of this machine and the Intel GMA 4500HD are causing the wrinkles in the drivers.

  • Slackware 12.2 USB w/ hdd install on a t400

I am having so much trouble with this...
I'm working with a t400, and using the hdd in the ultrabay not wanting to touch the main hdd.
The idea is to Install slackware to the Ultrabay drive, which should be simple...
However I can't boot from DVD, so I partitioned out  like this
    a 500gb seagate
    sdb1  Linux             [~250gb]
    sdb2  Linux swap   [8gb]
    sdb3  fat32(win95) [8gb]
    rest is free space
Using the image in the  /usb-and-pxe-installers folder i made a usb boot key, then copyed the whole dvd to sdb3
key boots just fine, no screaming errors, ect.
    1. cfdisk worked to make the parts,
    2. launch setup3. format  sdb1 (ex3) and sdb2 for thier roles,4. pick the target (sdb1).
    5. choose source (sdb3)
    6. I choose packages(all but extra langs, however just min install also fails)
    7. select install type, menu, noobie, ect does not matter which I choose the results are the same
    8. Install starts then 2-10sec later it stops and tells me that install and config are complete and that I can restart with crt-alt-del
        - using alt-f4 there is nothing listed here other than mounting for the target,  and if I did a format, the formating log is printed
        - rebooting and picking the seagate drive from the device list too boot from hands with a _  on the second or 3rd line of the screen and I have to hold the power button got shutdown.  booting internal drive goes right to win.  and booting off the key, I can't see that anything has been done to sdb1 other than a format.
I'm kinda new to linux, however I have installed slack and gotten a few desktop mtg running in VMware with 0 issues(outside of the nornal issues you have with vms)
Other things I have tryed would be to have the slack dvd copyed to a usb key and then booting with 2 keys in, one for the boot disk the other for the source info, installer still finds the needed files however install still never completes.
I really don't want to touch the internal hdd right now, and I just want to work linux of the ultrabay drive.

  • Intel Wimax 5350 not working with windows 7/t400

As someone who uses server 2008 on my desktop, when i received my t400 a few days ago i balked at the idea of using vista.  so i decided to download and install 64bit windows 7 (from vista 32bit...i did a clean install though...i believe).  i had not heard of anyone having trouble with wireless drivers in windows 7 and indeed intel states on their website that windows 7 will automatically install the drivers for the 5350 wireless card.
unfortunately, when windows 7 installation was complete the drivers were not installed and i did not have internet access.  so i had to take the usb wireless adapter from my desktop and plug it in to access the internet.  windows update did not fix the issue.  so i installed the visa 64bit intel drivers and windows told me that my wimax device was recognized, the drivers were installed, etc.
except the wireless card still wouldn't work!  currently under network adapters it is listen as local area connection 2/network cable unplugged/intel wimax link 5350.  i don't understand this...shouldn't it be listed as a wireless network connect as my usb adapter is?
i think the problem might be that under device manager, i do not have a driver for network controller, pci serial port, or pci simple communications controller.
this is quite frustrating and i really regret not having put more thought into this windows 7 installation.
    thanks for the help

    Go to Solution.

    I've got a T400 with a Intel 5350 and Windows 7 x64, I downloaded and installed the
Intel® PRO/Wireless and WiFi Link Drivers-Only for Windows Vista* (3298KB) and the
Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiMAX Connection Utility for Windows Vista* 64-Bit (9206KB) from the website listed below.
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com
Furthermore, my "Intel(R) WiFi Link 5350" and "Intel(R) WiMAX Link 5350" listed in the "Network Adapters" category, I dont have any "Wireless Network Connect" category at all.
    Hope this helps!

  • Connecting T400 to monitor display, Hotkeys turn on

I recently ran into trouble when connecting my T400 laptop to a monitor.  The keyboard becomes all whacky and only does hotkey functions(pressing p would print something).  The normal functions such as typing letters do not work.  I have to disconnect display and shut down my computer in order to fix the problem.  Does anyone have a solution to this?

    Hi Ishmelpie,
First things first, have you downloaded the latest hotkey drivers? They are available here: Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP (32-bit, 64-b...
I would first uninstall the current versions and then reinstall the latest drivers above. This may be a quick fix for your problem, I hope it works!

  • T400 mouse issues after spill

    Hi,
I love my T400. It is the best built, most trouble-free laptop I've owned. Now I have an issue due to a stupid spill.
I spilled a fair amount of beer over the keyboard and immediately powered down. If I had it to do over I would have uplugged and removed the battery, but hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
At any rate, I unscrewed the keyboard and examined it and below it and didn't find any beer residue except on the keyboard itself. I popped all the key tops off and cleaned the entire area with ispropyl alcohol. There was a lot of dirt and hair in there. I think I went through about 70 double-tipped swabs. I also looked at the underside of the trackpad and didn't see anything that looked like it needed cleaning. I didn't remove any ribbon cables.
I'm using the same laptop right now and it is fully functional with the exception of an annoying mouse issue. I'll refer to the buttons as upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right which should be self explanatory. I've never used the upper middle button so not even sure what it is supposed to do.
The first thing I noticed was that the lower left button didn't work and the lower right button seemed to only work in certain instances. I hooked up a USB mouse and that overcame my problem. I soon noticed problems with that where it appeared a mouse click wasn't registering. I also about the same time remembered the upper mouse button on the laptop and started using that.
Generally, my upper left works for any left click functions. However I've notice in Google Chrome, I can't select a tab to change to it. If I left click the tab close, it does close the tab.
If I left click on my desktop, I get the right-click menu. The upper left button produces the Windows Start menu just fine but it is rare that I can get the right-click Windows Start menu. When I can, it is only with the upper right button.
What I'm guessing from all this is, everything that is mouse-related must run through the same hardware regardless of the input used (upper buttons, lower buttons or external USB device) and different software handles mouse clicks differently explaining the differences (good, intermittent or never) in response.
Here's another example. To run the Windows calc program from the Start menu Run feature, normally I would left click run and get the dialog with a drop down menu for recent programs accessed thru Run. Let's say I'm using calc. Simetimes this works normally. Other times when I click Run, I get a single option  "drop-down" menu with that option being "run" which if clicked THEN takes me to the typical drop down menu of recent programs. Other times, I get a context menu which includes the Run option.
With that in mind, I'm wondering if replacing the touchpad assembly is likely to fix my problems or if anyone has any other suggestions other than to not spill beer on your laptop.
    Thanks

    hey beeherd,
replacing the touchpad assembly should resolve the issue. however, i am unable to guarantee that it will.
you could try that, or use an external mouse?
do a reinstallation of mouse drivers and use this manual : http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6629_04.pdf .
open the unit and dry it in a dust free room.

  • T400s crashes connecting to hotel wifi AP's

An odd issue that I'm having trouble resolving.
An employee with a T400s had a problem a month ago with his laptop crashing when trying to connect to the wifi in a hotel. Luckily there was an ethernet port in the room he was able to use, but the laptop continued having problems so I sent him a loaner overnight. When he got back I noticed the laptop was booting into safe mode but after a reboot it was fine, connecting to the office AP's fine, and everything looked good. A few days later a technician came by a couple of times and ended up swapping out the mainboard to fix a popping speaker.
This past weekend the same employee was at a different hotel and contacted me with the same problem - laptop crashing and booting into safe mode when connecting to the hotel's wifi AP. We got the laptop booting normally, had him log into a different account that ended up having the same issue, and eventually had him uninstall Access Connections and try the Windows wireless config. Same result.
Now the laptop is back in the office and I'm again having no problem with connecting to wifi here, with Windows and after installing Access Connections again. Running the latest versions of everything, Windows 7 x64 SP1 is fully updated, etc.
I scoured the Event Logs and crash reports and there is nothing indicating the case of the crashes that I can see. Whenever the computer crashes as a result of connecting to a "bad" wifi AP, the following ciritcal event is generated upon boot:

So, has anyone seen anything like this? I'm about to just purchase a new laptop for this person (Managing Director) as the last thing I need is for this to happen again as there is no sure fire way that I know of to verify that the issue has been resolved, unless this is a known issue with a fix out. Is this a known issue with the Intel Adapter (Wifi Link 5300 AGN) or drivers (or Lenovo customized drivers)? Could the adapter itself be bad?
What it bascially comes down to is: somebody has seen this and there is a way to known resolution, or I purchase a new laptop and put this one aside and work with Lenovo on it in my free time as it's still under warranty.

I just opened up the RAM/Radio compartment to remove the WWAN card as it's not needed and I noticed the WLAN card antena cables were attached incorrectly. First, only 2 of 3 were attached. Second, one of the cables attached was for the WWAN card. Apparently one of the IBM service techs decided to throw the thing together with a blindfold on after replacing some parts.
Anyway, could the antenas being connected improperly cause the WLAN adapter (or it's driver) to crash the laptop upon connecting to certain AP's?

  • Wimax (Clear) issues with the T400/intel 5150

Hey everyone, thanks in advance for any help!
My T400 came in a few days ago, and I'm quite happy with it. I ordered and my computer shipped with the 5150 wimax card in it as Clear recently added service for my city.
While everything else works perfectly, I've been having some trouble with the Wimax. Whenever I attempt to connect to Clear's service, it fails with a 'DHCP server not responding' error. I spent some time on the phone with Clear and they say everything checks out from their end (my MAC is authorized, service paid up, etc.). They recommended trying to use the default Intel Proset connection manager software as opposed to Lenovo's Access Connections.
Has anyone else had similar trouble, and is it even possible to use the Intel Proset connection manager without having to muck around and uninstall the access connections utility?
Sorry for the wall of text, but thanks again.

There is a problem with Intel's connection software. You need to upgrade to the latest version of Intel ProSET/Wireless WiMAX Software (1.5.0 as of 4/30/2010). That version will work much better although there are still repotedly some issues with it and Intel is still working on fixing those.
    Hope this helps.

  • T400 Hangs Surfing or Working on WiFi Network and the Wifi Led stops Blinking !!!

    I have a T400 Model (2764CTO) - with 5300 AGN, 2.53 Ghz, 3 Gigs RAM.
I have been facing a wiered problem - my machine hangs - all of a sudden - and at the times - after the machine has hung - the WiFi Led - goes off. I have searched and installed PC Doctor for Lenovo - and it does not capture the Hang Event. The only option I have left is a Hard Re-Boot.
Can any one please help. I have updated my LAN Drivers and WiFi Drivers - and still dun know what cud be causing this issue !!!

    Hi drpiso,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like the computer is the only device having trouble connecting only to your home network. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • No display installing Wn 7 home premium on T400

Bought a refurb T400 and installed a PNY SSD in it. It POST's okay and I can access bios. I can also read/install Linux from DVD just fine.
Trouble is when I insert my win7 home premium DVD into the drive and boot it, I get POST and then I get a black screen. It seems to be reading the drive and when I interrupt with the Esc key or open the DVD drive, I get a Windows menu explaining that the installation has been interrupted.
I've looked at the bios options and can't see anything obvious that should be changed.
    Any clues?
    Thanks.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Mark,
try cleaning your Window 7 Home Premium DVD. You mention your T400 can read/ load a Linux DVD just fine. So it sounds like a simple read error/ scratches on your Windows DVD and Windows setup is hanging/ getting stuck trying to read/ load the disc. Have you successfully loaded WIndows from this DVD before? If so, then it simply sounds like a worn disc. Download/ burn another copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and you should be OK.  You will need a valid Windows 7 license key to activate. See my long post here for some useful info. about the different Windows 7 versions and activation: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Discussion/Win-7-Product-key-not-working/m-p/1024331#M11851
Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO Image Downloads (directly from Microsoft website): http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/
If you have 3GB or more RAM in that T400, go right for the 64-bit version of Windows. As explained in long post mentioned above, the same Windows 7 key can activate either 32-bit or 64-bit version, so do your Windows setup correctly the first time. By the way, when installing Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (service Pack 1) it is best to leave BIOS SATA setting on "AHCI."
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • Best SSD For t400

    Hey all,
We have been starting to replace alot of the old hdd with sdd for our thinkpads and have ran into alittle trouble with some of the ocz agility 2 and the ocz vertex 2 ssd drives being bad,  My question is what SSD drive is most compatible with the t400, t420s and the x100e laptops.  we are looking for hi iops.  Any Suggestions would be wonderful.
    Thank you

I have a Crucial C300 (CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1) in my T60 for the last 18 months and have been very happy with it.  It is the 256GB which was purchased from MicroCenter in metro Detroit for $600.  It is now about $400.  I might also ad that I have the highest opinion of Crucial RAM and their service.  I have puchased all of my RAM from them directily via their website.
Here is a recent post from the forum.thinkpads.com:
    Best SSD for ThinkPads:
    Intel (X25-V/M/E, 310, 320, 510), Crucial/Micron (C300, m4), and Samsung (470, 830) models are currently the most reliable brands to get.
If you can't get any of those, steer clear of SATA 6Gb/s SandForce drives and OCZ in general. (The older generation of SandForce drives are more reliable than the new ones are.)
    ThinkPad T530 2359-CTO i7-3520M (up to 3.60 GHz) 16GB RAM, 250GB Samsung 840 SSD, 15.6" 1600 x 900 LED, NVIDIA NVS 5400M Graphics with Optimus Technology
