T400 wifi heads-up

This is a solution in search of a problem...
I've had a couple of unfortunate experiences with T400s and Intel wifi lately.
First, my brand-new T400 with Intel 5300 and Vista Ultimate wouldn't reliably connect to my wifi router (or access points in two hotels or the Denver airport).  It would connect with a couple of other access points.  The symptom was that it would associate, but not receive an IP address.  DHCP wasn't working.  If I let it fail, then immediately rebooted, it would work OK until I changed access points or went to a wired connection.  The next wifi connection would fail, requiring an immediate reboot to work.
With XP loaded on the machine, wifi worked as expected.  With Vista Ultimate or Vista Business 64, it was flakey.  Updating all software didnt' help.
The "fix" (suggested by a 2nd tier Lenovo tech) was to downgrade to an Intel 5100.  Since then it has wifi has worked just fine.  Not a pretty solution, but at least I have a usable machine.
More recently, a friend brought over two T400s still in their unopened boxes so I could lead him throught the recovery media creation process.  Both were running XP Pro with Intel 5100s installed.  Once the initial formalities were done, we tested wifi on both machines.  Both could see my router (Linksys WRT54GX2) but both failed to associate.  Once again, an immediate reboot after failure caused them to associate, get an address, and work as expected - until changing AP or going to a wired connection.  The symptom (or at least the error indication) was different from my T400 w/vista, but the behavior was similar.
With those machines doing full updates of XP and all Lenovo software seemed to fix things.  Since then they have behaved as they should, at least with my router.
It's not pretty when one of the most basic requirements of a laptop fails to work right out of the box.  Someone who always used their machine with the same AP wouldn't see this problem (after the 1st reboot anyway) but it is a real issue for a road warrior.
That's the end of the heads-up/rant/cry for help.  Anyone else seen this kind of misbehavior?  Anyone have an explanation or a better solution?

I followed the last post exactly and haven't had a problem since, about 5 days.
I saw that thread when I was fighting with the 5300.  My issues were different.  I couldn't associate or in some cases couldn't get an IP address.   I didn't have problems with the connection dropping once it was made.

  • T400 WiFi connection keeps dropping

    My T400 WiFi keeps dropping the connection, and wonder if anyone has any suggestions.  When it drops, I've tried to reconnect by going to Network and Sharing Center, clicking on Wireless Network Connection and try to restore from there.
    I get a repair window, then nothing happens.  The machine seems to lock up - I lose the task bar, the Windows button doesn't work, and I have to force shutdown via Ctrl-Alt-Del.  When it boots up again, the wireless reconnects without problems, but then will drop out again after a few hours.
    I've tried reinstalling the most recent drivers for the wireless card, but to no avail.
    Any suggestions, please? 

    You can try either of these and see if they help.
    Tap Settings, then tap Safari on the left side. Then on the right side - tap clear history, clear cookies, clear cache. Clear all three. Reboot your iPad. Hold down on the sleep button at the top until the red slider appears and slide to power off. Then hold down on the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and the iPad will restart. Launch Safari and see if helped.
    If that doesn't help, try this. Tap Settings, then tap General on the left side, then scroll down on the right side and tap Reset, then tap Reset Network Settings at the top. Reboot your iPad as described above. Go to WiFi select your network, enter your password and try again.

  • T400 WiFi: Lenovo immediately connects, but Microsoft takes 60 seconds longer

    I'm running Win 7 on a T400 with an Intel 5300 card. 
    When I boot-up, the Lenovo Access Connections immediately connects to the WiFi network. However, the Microsoft wireless indicator in the notification panel indicates that I am not connected to the WiFi network. It takes almost 60 seconds for the Microsoft Win 7 indicator to show that I am connected. (I've confirmed the behavior by opening the Network Connection and Sharing Center.) 
    Why does the WiFi immediately connect in the Lenovo Access Connections but take much longer in the Win 7 Network Connection and Sharing Center? Shouldn't they work simultaneously?

    Good question.  I had to try it myself just now.  T400. 5300. Win 7 Pro 64.
    I don't see that behavior.  The Windows wifi indicator takes a little longer while the tool tray is being populated, and does spin briefly, but not for 60 seconds.  I don't know what's happening during the time it takes me to log in.
    Do you see the same thing with a different router?  Or are you using an access point with a router behind it?
    It may be that the Lenovo wifi thingy lights up when the wifi radios are associated, but the Windows indicator doesn't show a connection until the DHCP address is assigned (and whatever else goes on) or fails.
    [edit] it could even be an artifact of whatever network security you are running.

  • T400 WiFi Driver problem

    First post.  I have a T400 and upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 64.  Everything worked great.  I tried to load the new WiFi 5300 drivers (ver 13) and my T400 cannot shutdown.  It reboots and says that a serious driver problem occured.  The machine cannot be shutdown without a hard shutdown.  I have tried loading the driver using System Update, the Lenovo website and the Intel website all with the same result.  If I uninstall the update everything works fine.  I'm hoping to get better wifi performance especially N band with the new driver.
    Has anyone gotten the new WiFi 5300 Drivers loaded on a T400 with Windows 7 64?  What other Thinkvantage apps do you have running?

  • T400 wifi issues

    T400, Intel 5100 wifi.  Testing Windows 7 Pro 64 bit install. This is a Microsoft upgrade DVD, not Lenovo   Clean install.
    Windows network management sees my N router sometimes, sometimes not.  Sometimes will connect, sometimes not.  If connect successful, it drops almost immediately.
    The Linksys wifi router is 5 feet away.  The same machine running Vista Business 64 bit can connect reliably from anywhere in the house.
    I have updated the 5100 driver via Thinkvantage System Update.  No joy.  Installed the Intel driver from Intel site.  No joy.  Done full System Update and Windows update.  No joy.  Installed Access Connections -that behaves the same way as Win 7 network management.  Only sees it sometimes.  Only associates sometimes.  Drops immediately.
    I had hoped to move this machine to '7, but as it is I'm not going to activate.
    Anyone having success with the T400, Intel 5100, Win 7 and a Linksys WRT320N?

    Answering my own question:   enabling QoS/WMM support in the router lets it work. Bizarre.  It works fine in VIsta w/out this.  How are mere mortals supposed to know this stuff..

  • T400 WiFi Link 5100 Incorrect Driver Update Retriever

    Update retriever does not have the correct download for the 6474 series it lists the Thinkpad driver 7yc10ww as the only download option.

    I'm not sure what you are asking for as 7yc10ww is not a valid driver file name (they all have 8 characters in the name).
    However, the current Intel 5100 driver for Vista can be downloaded from here.....

  • Mountain Lion/Mavericks 'breaks' wifi base station - Snow Leopard works fine

    (Tried this in the OSx forum with no answers, so I figured I'd try the MacMini community and this one.)
    I've been reading my way toward blindness through countless threads, here and elsewhere, from countless people, having problem with Mountain Lion and Wi-Fi these last few days, but some are using Airport, some are using third-party Wi-Fi routers, some aren't really specifying what they're using, so I thought I'd be as specific as possible about my situation - and add the fact that everything is still working fine if I boot into a cloned backup using Snow Leopard.

    So here's the situation. I have a Intel Mac Mini which I use as a Wi-Fi base station for a Intel PowerBook Pro and an iPod 5. The Mini has been running Snow Leopard, and the PowerBook had been upgraded to Mountain Lion a few months ago. Things were still working fine at that point - the PowerBook's shift from SL to ML didn't affect its connectivity as a 'receiver' at all. About a week ago however, I finally upgraded the Mini to Mountain Lion as well (so that I could install the current version of Adobe Lightroom) and lost my Wi-Fi Internet access.
    When I turn Wi-Fi on at the PowerBook, the Mini's network is visible, and I get the solid Wi-Fi fan showing a full connection, but I cannot access the Internet (indicated by the exclaimation point inside the fan for the first few seconds). The same is true on the iPod - I get the checkmark showing that I'm connected, but when I try to access any Internet services will get a pop-up box telling me that the Internet is not connected.
    After going through pages and pages and pages of people struggling with similar issues on sites like this, and following suggestions like deleting my preference files, repairing permissions, zapping PRAM, creating new locations, changing IP addresses etc. I got no further. But since I had cloned my hard drive just before the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (thank you SuperDuper), I can reboot into Snow Leopard, and everything still works fine. With that advantage, I copied and re-created EVERY SINGLE preference in the system preferences for Network and Internet sharing* from the Snow Leopard into the Mountain Lion system. (I even went so far as to create a network in Mountain Lion's prefs. with WEP encryption instead of the newer WPA just in case that would make any difference at all.) But even with identical settings on the Mini regardless of booting into Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion, Mountain Lion remains the same - no problem connecting with the network, but complete inability to access the Internet. A few days ago, hoping against hope that an upgrade to Mavericks might reset things into some sort of working mode, I tried that - but no better result.
    (*) I note that the wifi heading in the preference panes has changed from "AirPort" in Snow Leopard to "WiFI" in Mountain Lion and Mavericks, but I'm assuming that's just a change Apple made in its terminology to avoid confusion with the external AirPort options.
    I would appreciate any suggestions any of you could give. And I would ask that you specify whether any suggested changes are to be made on the originating Wi-Fi station (in this case the Mini), or the receiver (in this case the MacBook). Many of the threads I've read to date can be confusing simply because they're not specifying on which machine any suggested changes need to be made, and while I'm sure there's nothing that needs to be changed at the MacBook, please specify if I'm wrong.

  • T400 screw placement problem

    Hey guys, small problem working out where one screw goes(well two screws sort of)... Bought a T400 second hand and it was flithy. Seen the well detailed pdf and thought there was nothing to lose, so took it all apart lol. But now on my way back to re-assembling it all, I've quickly hit a snag.
    The diagram in the pdf page 102 seems to be different from my layout (my magnesium frame is different in a way it has more holes in some areas)
    Here is my layout
    Notice that the pdf diagram hasn't got as many holes under the wifi card area. Also the hole to the left of the lcd connector on my layout isnt there in the pdf .. reason why I mention this hole also is because I have a screw in it coming up from the bottom(you see, this hole is there from the bottom in the pdf on page 110(screw 8) of how the motherboard screws onto the frame, but from this top view its gone(mistake in the pdf maybe?.., but why all the other differences too, like extra holes on my layout?)..  Is it a half hole, that doesn't come through to top, maybe only on certain models?).. the thing that is confusing, is that the lcd brace uses that same hole too. So that is going to be 2 screws in the same hole - one screwed in from bottom, then from from the top when brace goes on... is this right?
    Now getting to the "1 screw" that is confusing me the most. It's a "9.5mm screw" and it is meant to go to the right of the lcd socket. but the layout in the pdf is slightly different. Should I put it there anyway?.. What if it goes under the wifi card instead?.. the holes there look more deeper, and the screw is big. And I'm afraid I may damage the MB if screwed into wrong hole. It is on pdf page 102 (screw 4)... can anyone shed any light on this confusion?

    All the T400 wifi cards are "n" compatible. The 3 wire cards are primary (b & g), auxilary and "n". There are also 2-wire cards that are primary (b, g, & n) and auxilary. I never found that turbo memory really helped. I ran tests and had no improvement. CPU upgrades only help if you do very particular cpu-intensive tasks. In general, adding memory and getting a faster disk are more cost-effective. If you have a WWAN card, you can access a celular network as if you had a mobile phone. In the U.S. the service is expensive, and I have never gotten it because it doesn't cover the areas where I would use it. Someone else can probably give you more help on the particulars in the UK.

  • Testing wireless access points

    I have been deploying Cisco (as well as Aruba and HP) wireless in the enterprise/education for some time.  One of the selling points of the Cisco model IMHO is the ability to do agressive load balancing.  I have been asked to test a smaller venders enterprise wireless solution.  I have sat in a few calls/presentations with engineers from this vendor and they do not have any answer to how they do load balancing (other than it just works).  What are your opinions on the importance of load balancing especially in dense environments (education).  Do you recommend any applications or ideas to test how the AP's will work in a dense environement (I will be doing some stress/throughput testing but I'm thinking of how I could emulate 25+ clients hitting one AP)?  Do any of you wifi-heads have any opinion or experience with enterprise wireless solutions from any of the smaller vendors?
    Any help or advice is greatly appreciated and will be rated.

    Here is my take on it. I have been deploying high density wireless in education for a while. Client load balancing send out a status code 17. The issue is that devices that do not support status code 17 fails to associate to the access point. My first experience with that issue was with Apple devices, then some Dell laptops and HP laptops. So in my opinion, I don't enable that feature due to the impact it has. Does it make a big difference... from my experience in education not really. In a dense environment you will have devices join other AP's around the area, but you might see more client associations on a given AP. If you design for high density I think you would be fine. I don't have any experience with other vendor wireless as much as I do with Cisco so I really can't compare.

  • T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

    Hello, thanks for reading.
    The title explains the problem pretty well.  I can connect to any given network just fine through wicd, but after a short bit of use the networking entirely stops and if I try to make any changes I get what I assume is a kernel panic and the whole system stops responding, short of the caps lock blinking.

    I get a whole bunch of times after it first appears in dmesg.  I've googled this error without the address on the end and it seems there isn't much of a solution that I'm aware of.  I don't know what to do from here!  Guidance is so very appreciated.

    Same here, I've tried without wicd.  The problem reproduces exactly the same.
    Also, I've googled around and it seems like this is a recurring bug. 
    I tried passing iommu=force to the kernal during boot and from there, the card works slowly.  I also get a different error array in DMESG from there.  The end of it is as follows:

  • T400s crashes connecting to hotel wifi AP's

    An odd issue that I'm having trouble resolving.
    An employee with a T400s had a problem a month ago with his laptop crashing when trying to connect to the wifi in a hotel. Luckily there was an ethernet port in the room he was able to use, but the laptop continued having problems so I sent him a loaner overnight. When he got back I noticed the laptop was booting into safe mode but after a reboot it was fine, connecting to the office AP's fine, and everything looked good. A few days later a technician came by a couple of times and ended up swapping out the mainboard to fix a popping speaker.
    This past weekend the same employee was at a different hotel and contacted me with the same problem - laptop crashing and booting into safe mode when connecting to the hotel's wifi AP. We got the laptop booting normally, had him log into a different account that ended up having the same issue, and eventually had him uninstall Access Connections and try the Windows wireless config. Same result.
    Now the laptop is back in the office and I'm again having no problem with connecting to wifi here, with Windows and after installing Access Connections again. Running the latest versions of everything, Windows 7 x64 SP1 is fully updated, etc.
    I scoured the Event Logs and crash reports and there is nothing indicating the case of the crashes that I can see. Whenever the computer crashes as a result of connecting to a "bad" wifi AP, the following ciritcal event is generated upon boot:

    So, has anyone seen anything like this? I'm about to just purchase a new laptop for this person (Managing Director) as the last thing I need is for this to happen again as there is no sure fire way that I know of to verify that the issue has been resolved, unless this is a known issue with a fix out. Is this a known issue with the Intel Adapter (Wifi Link 5300 AGN) or drivers (or Lenovo customized drivers)? Could the adapter itself be bad?
    What it bascially comes down to is: somebody has seen this and there is a way to known resolution, or I purchase a new laptop and put this one aside and work with Lenovo on it in my free time as it's still under warranty.

    I just opened up the RAM/Radio compartment to remove the WWAN card as it's not needed and I noticed the WLAN card antena cables were attached incorrectly. First, only 2 of 3 were attached. Second, one of the cables attached was for the WWAN card. Apparently one of the IBM service techs decided to throw the thing together with a blindfold on after replacing some parts.
    Anyway, could the antenas being connected improperly cause the WLAN adapter (or it's driver) to crash the laptop upon connecting to certain AP's?

  • T400 Hangs Surfing or Working on WiFi Network and the Wifi Led stops Blinking !!!

    I have a T400 Model (2764CTO) - with 5300 AGN, 2.53 Ghz, 3 Gigs RAM.
    I have been facing a wiered problem - my machine hangs - all of a sudden - and at the times - after the machine has hung - the WiFi Led - goes off. I have searched and installed PC Doctor for Lenovo - and it does not capture the Hang Event. The only option I have left is a Hard Re-Boot.
    Can any one please help. I have updated my LAN Drivers and WiFi Drivers - and still dun know what cud be causing this issue !!!

  • T400 unable to re-install WiFi driver

    Hi,
    I am cleaning and re-installing Windows XP on several laptops.
    I have an issue with 2 T400 laptops when trying to re-install WiFi driver.
    First, I used the same procedure on several Lenovo laptops (T61, T61p) and I didn't encounter any issue.
    The drivers I have downloaded are from Lenovo Website, using the full product identification.
    Before cleaning and re-installation, WiFi was working well.
    Here is how I proceed:
    - install Windows XP Pro SP2
    - install SP3
    - install Ethernet driver
    - install WiFi driver
    and there comes the issue. The installation goes OK but the WiFi connection is not present in the Network Connections window. The little light with the WiFi symbol is not light up.
    The manual switch on the front of the laptop is on (and the Bluetooth light is on).
    I tried Fn-F5 but no change.
    I tried to install Power Management, then WiFi driver, still not working.
    I tried the pruduct detection but it gave me the same driver.
    The file I downloaded is 7ywc54ww.exe.
    Do you have an idea on how I could do to solve that?

    The default setting for the wireless adapter is to allow turning off the adapter when on battery.
    To change:
    1. Right click the Wireless Connection.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the Configure button.
    4. On the Power Management Tab, remove the "Check" on the line; "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

    Hi,
    I believe the SIM card slot is in the battery bay.  Remove the battery to access.
    That Intel 5100 is a wifi card, not a wwan card.  Do you also have a wwan card installed, or is that what you are asking about?
