T400 win7X64, refreshrate resets to 50 Hz
every now and then the refreshrate of the screen of my laptop is reset to 50 Hz. I checked every setting in the power manager and told it to never set it to 50 Hz. however sometimes it just does.
this happens when using integrated, as well as discrete graphics.
anyone having the same problem?
If you're using the Intel graphics, it's a power-saving feature/setting that seems to be newly implemented. Right-click on your desktop, click Graphics Properties, then under Display Settings, click Power Settings. Click Modify Settings, and there should be an option called "Intel Display Refresh Rate Switching Technology," probably checked and set to 50 Hertz. If you don't like it, turn it off. I'm not sure how much battery power it actually saves.
Edit: It switches to 50 hertz when you unplug the power cord, then switches back to 60 or whatever when you plug it back in.

T400 system time resets when battery dies
Anyone else having this issue? I've had it on many of our T400's here. If the user allows the battery to completely run out without shutting the laptop down, it will kill the bios battery too and reset the system date and time.
I have had this problem with other laptops as well..
I am guessing the problem is with the cmos battery on the motherboard and not the main system battery,
Whwn the system is shut down or the main battery dies, the cmos battery is the one that saves the time and keeps it updated.
Also its the cmos battery that powers the bios during system startup.
If you need to reset the time every time you start up the system , thats the first indication that the cmos battery is dying. -
T400 screen brightness frequently resets
My T400 screen brightness resets to its lowest value intermittently. Sometimes it takes only 30 seconds, sometimes it's several minutes. If I press a key, it goes back to the bright setting. I didn't intentionally change any power or screen settings, and none of the settings I can find (Windows or ThinkVantage power settings) indicate that this should happen.
Any idea what's going on?
Thanks.

How do I obtain a set of Windows 7 recovery/installation discs (in my case T400)
Half an hours fruitless searching on Lenovo sites has not go me the answer. Well maybe a part number - 04T1506.
Also most helpful links in old posts dump you out to the general support page at Lenovo.
So here's the issue: At work I have a nice Lenovo laptop and have decided to get a used/refurb T400 for home. There are plenty to choose from. A large proportion state that Windows 7 is pre-installed.
The first thing I would do with the machine is a total disc wipe and clean install of Windows 7. Becuase I would have no idea what viruses/stealthware might be on the machine. No system recovery procedure would satisfy me. This is exactly what I've done on previous Windows XP based Lenovos I've had - but I had a 6-disc set called "Product Recovery CD for Type RnR'.
So what does one do with a used (or even departmentally transferred) Windows 7 T400?
How do I order something like part 04T1506? There's no obvious shopping option on the page it's listed on - e.g.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/product-and-parts/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-72806
I want to feel sure about the obtainability and cost of such a disc set BEFORE I make my T400 purchase.
Also, will a license key be needed and will the one on the sticker thats supposed to be attached to the T400 work?
(plenty of reports that these stickers get worn to unreadability)
(in my previous XP case, the OS was recognized as being an OEM one so no key was asked for).
I am sure the answer to this - surprisingly not covered in any Lenovo FAQ - will be of interest to other Lenovo enthusiasts too.Hi,
You have a few options depending on the "new" machines configuration.
If it came with Windows 7 installed and the recovery partition is intact, you can do a reset to factory state using Rescue and Recovery. For that matter, maybe it will come with a user-burned set of recovery media.
If it was a Win 7 machine you can do a clean install of Win 7 and activate with the CoA sticker's key - if it's readable. Follow that by a ThinkVantage System Update install and use it to pull down the appropriate drivers. Install ISOs are available for download - or borrow install media.
You can contact support., They should be able to sell you recovery media - or refer you to someone who can. Here in the US support can provide the media. This is if your machine was originally licensed for Win 7. If it was a Vista machine, support won't provide '7 media.
Otherwise you're looking at buying MS Win 7 media and doing a clean install.
Z.

T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg
Hello, thanks for reading.
The title explains the problem pretty well. I can connect to any given network just fine through wicd, but after a short bit of use the networking entirely stops and if I try to make any changes I get what I assume is a kernel panic and the whole system stops responding, short of the caps lock blinking.
Relevant outputs include:

I get a whole bunch of times after it first appears in dmesg. I've googled this error without the address on the end and it seems there isn't much of a solution that I'm aware of. I don't know what to do from here! Guidance is so very appreciated.Same here, I've tried without wicd. The problem reproduces exactly the same.
Also, I've googled around and it seems like this is a recurring bug.
I tried passing iommu=force to the kernal during boot and from there, the card works slowly. I also get a different error array in DMESG from there. The end of it is as follows:
Linux version 2.6.30-ARCH (root@T-POWA-LX) (gcc version 4.4.1 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 31 07:30:28 CEST 2009

Premiere Pro CC 2014 with NVIDIA system freezes (Win7x64)
It appears after perhaps the last update Premiere Pro CC 2014 started freezing during editing. It appears to happen mostly with 4K material and using the Ultra key and alpha blending but may also occur with 4K titles. The sequences are 23.976 1080p, with mixed footage from the Sony A7S (50 Mbps XAVC-S/H.264) and GH4 (4K 100 Mbps H.264). There are also frequent crashes with GPUFoundation.dll (Mercury + CUDA). No freezing with software only rendering. I tried a variety of drivers when using a Quadro 5000 with no change in freeze behavior. I tried a new GTX 770 (clean driver install) and the freeze behavior and GPUFoundation.dll crashes are the same, however now even the mouse freezes. With the Quadro 5000, the entire Windows GUI would freeze (become inactive), however the mouse would still move. Thus, it appears there are issues with both NVidia drivers and Premiere Pro CUDA code path on Windows (app errors shouldn't be able to lock up the entire GUI). GPU Meter shows low GPU and GPU memory utilization during the freezes. The freezes typically occur when switching between clips during playback or scrubbing (more often with fast scrubbing). As a developer, it feels like some kind of semaphore lock / race condition, since during the freezes CPU, GPU, and memory utilization are very low. Additional hardware info: 2010 MacPro 12-Core, 24GB RAM running Win7x64 (with latest updates). Side note: PPro used to hang in memory on exit, but stopped after a recent Microsoft forced update (PPro now crashes sometimes on exit but no longer hangs in memory (used to have to kill it after exiting every time)). Has this been reported before? (A7S XAVC & GH4 4K footage is relatively new)
This crash occurred when dragging Black Video with Noise and other effects on top of alpha composited layers (+3 layers). CUDA turned the rendered area black, so I switched to OpenCL. This crash happened a few minutes later. While this would appear to be an Nvidia driver error (OpenCL), perhaps the developers can investigate. The system is very stable except when doing complex operations in PPro (and only PPro crashes). A tried and true Quadro 5000 crashed in the same way (totally different hardware and drivers).
The full debug info wouldn't post, edited shorter:

Hello all,
I am a newcomer to this forum and I'm glad to see such support for such great products!
I just got my first ever ThinkPad after some research - the T400. I bought it equipped with this:
SBB ERICS.F3507GUSA-WIWANCARD
I noticed immediately that the SIM card was installed in already, so I powered it on, but in the Lenovo Welcome center part, it told me that I do not have any kind of mobile broadband card installed.
What?
I see the slot for the SIM, and I have a guy on Tech Support telling me it's a PCMCIA card and that I need to pull it out and put it in again!
I've already tried reinstalling the drivers, etc. Did I just get a defective card? Has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks for your help
SpencerHave you checked to see if the SD card reader is listed in system profiler? (apple menu, about this mac, more info button) it should be listed under Hardware, under USB, it would be labeled some thing like "Internal Memory Card Reader".
If the card reader isn't listed:
Have you tried a NVRAM Reset?
Have you tried a SMC Reset?
If the card reader is listed, but your not seeing the inserted cards:
Have you checked to see if the cards are reconised in Disk Utility? (go to the dock, click on finder, go to the menu bar, click on the go menu, chose Utilties, double click on disk utility) Do you see the sd card listed? -
T400 Display Blinks On then Off.
I have a T400, M/N:7417-CTO, S/N: L3-B5843, LED Screen.
When I open the lid, turn on the system, the backlight lights up, and then cuts out. If I close the scren again, and close it, it will keep soing the same thing. From what I can see, the backlighting is of even brightness, and no distortion.
I need assistance in trying to determine what the issue is. Additionally, the LED Display was replaced about 9 months ago.
Sincerely,
MarkThanks for the response.
The problem (which I just noticed occurred in Entourage also) resolved after I reversed the monitor connections. I then reversed the connections back to the original configuration, and the problem has not recurred (at least so far), either in the dual-display or single-display configurations.
The only thing I can think of that may have had an effect is that the primary monitor, connected digitally, ran an auto-reset function after I switched the connection to analog. -
Thinkpad twist (s230u) bad sectors and trying to reset to factory software
Hi all
My thinkpad suddenly not starting. During bootup, I tried to scan and fix sectors but after 3-4 hours, it said it can not be done (after finding like 400 errors). May be the hard drive is partially corrupted. I tried to reset to factory setting from within startup screen it went till 42% and hung for two days. When I restarted it can not now complete even factory reset.
Is there a way I can get factory os installation and settings from online lenovo website? Any help is appreciated.
By the way my laptop is out of warranty.
Thanks
Anil

Sorry you're having difficulty.
Your best bet would be to call Support (info below) to request recovery media, as it is not available as a download.
Hope this helps.

Anyone has a suggestion where I should send my complain to (no more calls). Here is my story of purchasing a thinkpad T400.
11/30/2009
Because the online order system down, it took me over 10 hours with many tries to placed my order. This is understandable because the 20% off . Finally, my order was placed and I received an order number 3D3xxx.
12/14/2009
(1) I received the notebook and discover the battery is not chargeable.
(2) Call technical support. I was transfer to Warranty department because they have no information of my notebook? Should the warranty information automatically generated when I register on line?
(3) The warranty information was enter to the system. I was told it will take 2-3 day to send the data over to the technical support department. So an exception was made so I can get service right away. A case 23PHxxx was created.
12/15/2009
A UPS shipping box received. I sent the notebook to your eastern service center.
12/18/2009
(1) The notebook was sent back to me. There was no notification of the shipment so none was available to sign the package. It took me two hours to pick up the package at a UPS center which is far away and unknown area for me at night.
(2) I was notified that technician, Z. Young, replaced the system board and reloaded factory Installed software. But he cannot replace the battery because the battery is not under "warranty"? I do not know why the above "exception" can let him replace the system board, but not the battery. The worst thing is, a wrong version windows was reloaded, 32 bits instead of 64 bits. I already have a T60 runs on 32 bit xp. I need a 64 bit notebook to work on MS sharepoint 2010 which requires 64 bit OS. When I received the notebook on 12/14, it cames with 64 bit OS.
(3) I made a call to technical support, I was assign a new case number, 22QGxxx and was told to call next day because no warranty information.
11/19/2009
Call technical support, I was told to call again on Monday because none in the warranty department works in weekend.
11/21/2009
(1) Received a call from warranty department. After verify the customer, order, model and serial numbers. I was notified there was a data entry error so no warranty information for my notebook is avaliable. It should be correct.
(2) Received a call from technical support. A new case, 20TTxxx was created. I was told, a new battery, a windows 7 64 bit system recovery cd along with an used AC adapter will send to me. I need to return the bad battery.
11/22/2009
(1) Received AC adapter only.
(2) I called technical support and was transfer to customer services because technical support does not have shipping information.
(3) I was transfer again to back order department and notified that the battery was in back order. They do not have sn EDT for the battery and have no information of the windows recovery cd.
(4) Finally, I was transfer back to technical support and notified the windows cd should be send by a vendor and will take 2-3 days.
As of now, I still do not have a workable notebook yet. You can see the time I spent on the matter. I have to take risks of my job to made most these calls during work hours. It is incredible. I used to love thinkpad and its services. Next time when I need a notebook, I need to think thought after the experience I had this time.Eg10013,
Can you send me a PM with your sales order number, and your service cases ?
This sounds like we made this a lot more difficult than it needed to be and I'd really like to look into this.
1) Sometimes batteries aren't properly recognized... we can try to reset them by removing battery and AC from the system, press and hold the power button several times for 5 secs or so each time. Reinstall battery and AC and power up system - see if battery will now charge. I've seen this once or twice - very low incidence rate, but worth spending 2 or 3 mins to rule out. Easy fix, if this is the issue.
2) All systems ship with a base warranty - there should not have been a delay in providing you with support for at least the base terms - onsite upgrades can take a week or so to register and be recognized. I think we should have offered to send you the battery and AC adapter rather than bringing the system into the repair depot. Problem determination over the phone should have been able to determine if it were the adapter (check voltage at the tip - try to start system with no battery installed. If starts up, the AC adpater is probably ok) (Check battery to see if system will boot from battery only, no AC - if so battery probably ok).
I'm not sure why they decided to re-image the system - should have had nothing to do with the problem, especially on a brand new system. Ordering recovery disks can take a couple of days.
On your battery order - if you call support and ask for the warranty claim number - should be a CWxxxxx number, you can call parts at 800-388-7080 and following the phone menu inquire about status on this claim number - they should have an ETA. Phone option 3 on the first menu, then press 2 on the second menu, then stay on the line and a rep will answer.
I'm going to be out for the holiday, but will return to work on Monday, and will follow up with you to ensure this is resolved.
I apologize for your experience so far...
Best regards,
Mark

T400 AMT/Fingerprint (Predesktop Authentication)/BIOS problem
I have a T400 7417CTO.
When I received the machine in March 2009, I enabled the Predesktop Authentication with the fingerprint reader and set a power on password (which I have not forgotten).
Lately I enabled Intel AMT through the BIOS and provisioned it. I suspect AMT has set a supervisor password on the BIOS without me knowing?
Today I tried changing some settings in the BIOS. It would not allow me to do so as there was a Supervisor password apparently set (which I do not recall setting). I then pulled the backup battery out (reset power on password).
I then turn on the machine, and the fingerprint prompt comes up as usual after the POST screen. However a password prompt now comes up after a successful fingerprint verification. I try all of the passwords that I know and none of these work. The password prompt has the third icon on this page (which is supposedly a power on password prompt) http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-59377 -- MIGR-59377.
I now cannot get into the BIOS, Intel ME Configuration or even boot up.
Would there be a way of rescuing the system, or is my system board bricked for sure?

Go to Solution.Hello hubertlam,
maybe it´s the normal AMT password you need.
That´s "admin" if it's in the first time mode. source: Intel

T400 won't boot while on battery
Title really sums it up. 3-year-old T400 boots up fine while on AC power, but on battery power, no lights light up or anything when I press the power button. Initially I thought it was the battery, but the brand new 9-cell battery I ordered didn't change anything.
When I open the Power Manager, it says the original 6-cell battery has 0.0 Amps and 11 V. Says the same thing about the 9-cell battery. I'm prepared to bet against Lenovo shipping me a dead battery, but anything's possible. I've tried uninstalling the power manager and reinstalling; same thing. I've tried resetting the CMOS/backup battery. Only thing I haven't tried is a BIOS rollback. Currently using the 3.22 version.
System Specs:
t400 w/ T9400 CPU and switchable graphics
Win7 x64 Pro
Any suggestions would be very helpful. I would call Lenovo support, but most of what I've found on here points to them not being helpful unless you're under warranty (which I'm not).
Thanks.

Go to Solution.hey AndyV,
welcome to the forums.
Either the battery is dead or the terminals on the motherboard is not detecting the batteries at all.
If you have any friends who has a ThinkPad system that uses the same time of batteries of yours, test it out.
another thing you could try is to use this hardware maintenance manual >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM001058
open your unit, clean up any grime and dust. Put it back together and hopefully you'll be able to use your unit with the battery attached

T400 won't resume from standby after tampering with Intel ME functions
Hello,
I have a Lenovo T400 with XP SP3. Standby had always been working fine, but yesterday I disabled the Intel ME and AMT functions in the BIOS and also disabled the Intel AMT services in Windows.
When I pressed the power button this morning, I heard the hard disk spinning up, but the standby indicator stayed lit and the display did not activate. I had to force a power off to regain control.
The first suspect is the Active Management Technology, because I haven't installed anything particular that may interfere with power management. At the moment, I haven't had time to try and roll back the changes I've made, but I'm asking if anbody knows about similar issues or has an explanation ready, before I start doing things that may compound the problem.
Thank you,
/_urka
Solved!
Go to Solution.Resetting the security chip, as suggested in another thread by tobes78, fixed the issue.
My T400 has been working correctly for some days now.
Before resetting the security chip, I tried all the following without result, but some updates may be required for the fix to work:
-updating BIOS
-updating ACPI drivers and PM software
-disabling Intel ME and AMT
I've left Intel ME/AMT disabled, because I don't really need it and I dare not try enabling it again.
However, it is not sure if the issue was caused by a firmware or a hardware defect and if that may cause other problems in the future.
Bye,
/_urka

T400 Switchable Grafics won't switch
Hello everybody,
I got a problem with my t400. It's not possible to switch between the two graficcards. The Ati 3400 is not detected by Windows 7, too.
It is a problem i know. Installing Windows again will solve it, but i am very unhappy to install windows over and over again. I tried everything. I've deleted the driver, installed it again manually and over systemupdate, but nothing happens. All I could say is, that Windows allways says, that it cannot show the basis-colorthemes. (I'm not sure. if that is the right translation)
Resetting the Bios don't work, too. The card will never be detected again.
After reinstallation the system will run with both cards, but after time the radeon will not work any longer.
So, does anyone know, why the problem appears? Because when there is an incentive, I wold deactivate it. Eeinstalling windows costs so much time.
It would be greatfull, if somebody knows how to solve the problem without reinstalling windows.
Thanks a lot and greets
sd jasuriIf Windows in not detecting it then its another problem.
In Device manager, do you see both graphic adapters? If not go into the BIOS and select the correct display adapter just select discrete for ATI since thats what you'd want anyway. Save and exit, the ATI card should be detect upon Win 7 startup. Check device manager again. You should see ATI at least if it locates a valid driver for it.
