T400 Windows XP Random Freezes / Lockups (no BSOD) - Intel Wireless issue?

Hi,
I installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on my new Thinkpad T400 purchased a few days ago. I installed all the latest drivers and thinkvantage software from the drivers matrix.
For two days now the system randomly freezes. The screen freezes, i cannot move the mouse or keyboard. Some FN buttons like the Thinklight still work, the rest does not and it ultimately requires a force power off by holding the power button pressed.
Interestingly enough the Wireless symbol still blinks even when the laptop is frozen. When i turn off the wireless switch, the bluetooth icon will turn off, yet the wireless KEEPS blinking (normally both turn off when the wireless switch is turned off).
I originally had the lenovo intel wireless 5100 drivers, now tried the intel.com drivers, no avail, same issue. The system also freezes when just sitting idle. I have not yet tried if the freezes occur with wireless turned off, will try later...
Kind of annoying as i had various BSODs due to the lenovo intel Matrix Storage driver (the original intel one made it go away), now this problem...is XP just not really supported by this machine?

  • Windows 7 Random freeze

I recently purchased a new Mac Mini(599 model 2/4/12). Only hardware change i've done is upgraded to 8gb of RAM. I installed Windows 7 Professional(32bit) via USB drive with bootcamp(60gb set aside for it).  Installation went just fine, and installed Windows.  The only programs installed on the windows side is VS 2010 and MS Office 2010 for school work. The problem i'm encountering is that Windows will just randomly completely freeze and lock up. It does not reboot unless i manually reboot it. This problem will come just 20 minutes after being on windows to sometimes not until i'm on it for 1-2 hours. It is not program specific of what i'm doing to freeze up, but i've noticed two times it has done it when i'm either moving a large file(~2gb) from a flash drive to the HDD, and when i was downloading adobe design standard(~2.3gb download). Any help is greatly appreciated.

    DRAMV is 2.0
I ran memtest no errors, two hours prime94 nothing.

  • Vista and Windows 7 Randomly Freezing on Unibody Mac

Some people have had to experience this problem and there must be a reason for this and a fix... While surfing the web mostly or sometimes being on the desktop doing stuff the entire system will freeze where you need to do a hard reboot. I do not understand what the deal is with this but I thought it would not be a problem on Windows 7 like it did on vista. Both ran 64bit as well. Anybody who can help with this I would love you forever :/ thanks in advance

  • T400s random freezes

Hi All, Have seen this topic posted in a similar vein a few times but no real solutions aparent.  My T400s (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, Samsung 128Gb SSD)  is prone to freezing for no aparent reason.  Temperatures are fine (in the 30s), there are no errors or warnings aparent  in the event logs, and it can happen at any time, when I'm browsing, or when it's idling.  The freeze ups are instantaneous, with no visible clues on the screen apart from the cursor not moving, and requiring a hard restart (power button hold) to get it going again.  It can go for hours at a time with no problems, then freeze, or it can freeze multiple times an hour.  Seems to depend on what mood it's in. Have checked the SSD with SSDLife and it gets a clean bill of health, and I've swapped out the RAM with no difference in results. Now, the only time it isn't prone to freezing is when it's running in Safe Mode, so I'm guessing it's maybe a software conflict ?.  Hoping that someone out there might know what I could try unistalling before I try uninstalling the lot !. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply richk.  Been getting these freezes at random intervals since I bought the laptop 2nd hand over a month ago.  Done all the usual checks, virus scans, removing all unnecessary software, and LSC to update drivers.   Following your advice I've turned off everything I could find in the BIOS.  So far so good  Been running about 5 hours with all off, then turned Wi-Fi back on about 2 hours ago, still good.  With any luck it will stay that way, but need to give it a day or two to be sure.  Will keep you posted.

  • Anyone using Windows 7 RC on an R61 ? (Random freezing issues)

My R61 will randomly freeze for 2-3 minutes during which time it becomes unusable as I cannot move the cursor.  All programs stop responding for 2-3 minutes and suddenly the computer will snap out of it and become usable again.  This will happen probalby twice an hour when I'm using the laptop.
I've installed both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of the Windows 7 RC and the freezing problem occurs on each.  This R61 has been running Windows XP flawlessly for 2 years now otherwise.
The 64 bit version of Windows 7 RC runs flawlessly on my desktop computer with many of the same programs installed so I'm guessing it's a driver incompatability with the my R61 that is causing the issue, I just can't narrow it down.

    RRC:
Take a look at this thread and see if the possibility of a missing Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver might be the cause of your problem.  Here's the link to the discussion thread:  T61 freezes every 15 minutes.
Also, have a look at this post, it might contain a golden nugget of information about something you may have overlooked:

  • T410 2516CTO random freezes without anything in Windows Event Viewer! :(

I used Update Retriever + Thin Installer (virtually System Update 4.0 but a server + client version of it) to download drivers and install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with SP1 on this machine. A hard power off is required by pressing on the power button for 5+ seconds
    Core i7 620M
    8GB RAM
    320GB 7.2k rpm HDD
    Optimus graphics
    Gobi2000 WWAN
    uPek Fingerprint reader
The machine freezes without any warning and has done so with both the factory install (more frequent) and with the HDD wiped and using Microsoft's Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 slipstreamed (freezes much less frequently). Are there tools that I can use to help diagnose this problem?
I have also used a 90W AC adaptor and 65W adaptor on this machine. The random freezes happen on either adaptor as well.
I read of other people who have the same frustrations over freezes but no other situation described is exactly the same as mine unfortunately -- most other occasions you can find something in Windows Event Viewer!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi again
Found out that it was the Intel WiFi 6300 that was locking the machine. Disabled it via h/w switch or BIOS made the freezing disappear altogether.
So there we go. A once off incident of a failed 6300 WLAN card.

  • Mid-2010 iMac randomly freezing after last Windows 7 update.  Help!  I am a teacher and have 50 computers all behaving the same way.

I am a teacher and have 50 mid-2010 iMacs running Windows 7 in my classroom.  The computers did a Windows 7 automatic update on or around April 15, 2014.  After that, each computer randomly freezes.  Some are worse than others.  Most of the computers freeze when a USB drive is plugged in and also when a pop-up shows up on the screen - especially the Java update.  I have installed the most current Bootcamp drivers and run several anti-virus program searches.  I've also tried the Microsoft Fix-it program and almost everything.  Uninstalling the updates did not help.  Can anyone help me out?

based on what you wrote this  doesn't make sense
use system restore to rollback the machine prior to this update

  • My windows 7 keeps freezing randomly

Hi I know there were similar questions asked, but I already tried some things like registry cleaning software, and freezing still keeps comming back so I feel like I need a specific and interactive help.
So my windows freezes from time to time, today it was every couple minutes while browsing internet through firefox mostly, and single freeze takes from several seconds to minutes.
Right here for a similar problem I've found suggestion to collect minidump files:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/b9c932b4-5926-4f92-b186-c4f90bb86583/windows-7-keeps-freezing-randomly?forum=w7itproperf
I can do it too, if there is someone here to listen :) and will further help me continue solving this. Thanks.
    Tom

Ok, so I got some freezes just moments ago and went to collect minidump files. When I tried this:
Click “Start”, type “%SystemRoot%\Minidump" (without quotation marks) in “Search” bar and press “Enter”.
    ...it found no elements matching.
Yesterday I've done everything like suggested here:
    1. Click "Start", input "SYSDM.CPL" (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press “Enter”.
    2. Switch to the "Advanced" tab and click the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery".
    3. Under "Write debugging information" section, make sure the "Small memory dump (128KB)" option is selected.
    4. Make sure "%SystemRoot%\Minidump" is in the "Small dump directory" open box and click “OK”.
...except where it sais 128kb I had only option 256kb
so what is going on?  no minidump folder under my windows folder...

  • Random freezes when requesting downloads, opening Page Info window, while opening tabs, etc.

I'm running Windows on a SSD, so everything's fucking quick. Opening FF is fine and quick too, it doesn't freeze, it's smooth and work perfectly.
Here's my problem. When I'm opening the Page Info window, it sometime freezes, sometime not. It's the same thing when I'm starting a download. Opening tabs CAN do it, but less often.
I've completely deleted FF (removing my personal settings), then reinstall it, but the same problem appear. FF Sync is configured and working though, I don't know if it could be the problem.
Well I hope you can help me guys, if you need more information about my system configuration, please ask!
    Dave

My thinking is that Plasma is not "playing" nicely with nvidia, I have two systems in my pc, one with kde4 and the other one (my testing system) with plasma, kde4 runs as it should, no lags, no freezes, no redrawing problems, fast and smooth. My plasma system is really not there, I tweak both systems the same, 20-nvidia.config on the xorg.d folder created by the nvidia settings, same where I also tweak all settings to juice my video card to its fullest (a really weak one by the way, a fanless gt430) and the triple buffering enabled for kde. I do have freezes with Plasma that lock the whole system, no keyboard input, and its been more or less the same since its release (for me that is), I am keep waiting to see if the "next" release would do, 5.3 still not yet. I also notice that compositing effects makes things worst, for example, snapping a window to a corner or to maximize when wobbly effect is on is a sure shot for a freeze for my system, I just update today the linux kernel and the nvidia driver, would see if that helps a little. My advice, for a stable system stick to kde4 still.
Edit: Note, I have a good old amd phenom 6 cores and I always run it with some over-clocking, never have issues with that on my previous install or my main system.

  • [Solved] Random freezes, keyboard lockups

There doesn't appear to be anything to explain this in the logs, but Arch tends to randomly freeze, sometimes a kernel panic sometimes not, either way it forces a restart.
There are also times where the keyboard becomes inoperable and using halt won't work, a hard reset is required.
So yeah, I have no idea where to start. I posted this in another forum but perhaps I will get better responses here.
I am running Arch64 on an xps m1330 with an nvidia 8400m, running gnome with compiz-fusion-git.

For me it's a problem with the newest kernels and possibly the power cooling or some other motherboard fault. I have to run different distros if I want to go into x these days ..

  • P67a-gd65 random freezes

    Hello,
I am having issues with my new system that i have built.
    MSI P67a-gd65 (B3)
    Corsair XMS3 1600
    MSI Twin frozr GTX560 TI
    Core i7 2600K
    Windows 7 64 bit
My system will randomly lockup and i can't get it to work again unless i hard reset the machine. I have set the motherboard to optimized defaults and the memory is running at 1333. I also made sure my RAM timings and voltages were set to their defaults.  I have not overclocked the system in any way. These lockups only occur when i am doing leisure things like surfing the web or checking my email. I can play any game i want for several hours on end without a lockup. I have updated my drivers from the MSI website and this also did not help.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Anthony

I had exact same issue with very close hardware ( only dif is 2500K instead of your 2600K, and B2 motherboard ) and after many test I finally found the solution by changing SPD memory from JEDEC4 to XMP-1600.
JEDEC4 was completely unstable , I got no BSOD but random freeze, especially when idling/low activity.
IMHO Corsair memories are definately not stable with JEDEC4.
Now 10 days with XMP SPD and fully stable !
    Hello all,
I've been 24 hour crash free. I also setup my memory as listed above (thanks for that tip).
Thanks to everyone who replied with ideas.

    ______ Original post __________
Like others I've been plagued by random freezes in using my newly built system, based on the GD65.
    What happens:
    1/6 times BSOD and restart.
5/6 times a simple freeze, with, if present, (analog) sound output relooping the last second of output or producing a more garbled stream of sound.
    When does it happen:
    - 1/5 times when doing nothing (save for uTorrent running in the background). I.e. returning to my machine, it won't respond to input, or if the screen has stayed on, shows the machine to be in a frozen state.
    - 4/5 times when browsing, and especially when watching flash-based movies (flash 10.1 prerelease). That might be a biased memory, though, as these freezes always produce very _memorable_ sound relooping.
The system can be stable in continuous operation (including uTorrent) from anywhere between 1 hour to 4 days, before the abovementioned occurs.
    The system:
    - MSI P55-GD65 (Foxconn socket, BIOS 1.5)
    - i7 860
    - 2x 2GB Corsair Dominator 1600MHz CAS 8 --> CMD4GX3M2A1600C8 (DIMM1 and DIMM3)
    - Corsair HX850W
    - Intel 80GB Intel X25M 2,5" SATA (IRST 9.5 drivers installed)
    - 2x Samsung 1000GB Samsung HD103SJ
    - Windows 7 64bit Professional (on SSD)
    I've tried the following:
    - Reseating the CPU.
As far as I could see there were scuff marks on all pads and in the socket, no pins were bent or seemed abnormal. I must say that during the reseating I was struck by the very shoddy-feeling latching mechanism.
    - Varying BIOS settings. Many, from the most default to custom OC, to OC Genie based settings. Interestingly, the non OC'd settings seemed to perform the worst.
Looking back into the various BIOS profiles I stored, I see that I haven't tried (d'oh!) the combination of:
    - A higher DRAM voltage
    - Relaxed DRAM timings
    - Standard base clock
I'm going to try this and see if that will make my system run stable. I'll update somewhere later this week.
In the meanwhile, I'm very interested as to what people think concerning the times at which the freezes occur (for me and for quite a few other accounts I found scattered around). From what I can gather:
    - These freezes almost never occur when the machines are stressed.
    - They seem to occur more frequently when users are using their browsers.
    - Vista and Win7 seem to suffer from more freezes than XP installations (there is an account of a dual-booting guy stating this) with XP installations generating more BSODs instead of freezes.
    - Memtesting generally reveals no issues whatsoever, nor does prime95-testing.
I can't get my head around this behaviour. You'd expect that with hardware that is on the edge, when it comes to margins in voltages and timings and what not, stress testing would surely push it over that edge. Are we dealing with voltage fluctuations or certain patterns of memory usage that cause these issues?
Again, very interested what your take is on this.

Hi everyone! Let me contribute in diagnosing the problem.
I've bought P55-GD65 in november'09 (BIOS version 1.0) along with OCZ DDR3-1600 Gold 2*1Gb Kit. Installed Win7 32-bit. Every few hours I was getting BSOD with something like "BUGCODE_USBDRIVER". I thought this was Windows fault, that's why I've tried Vista SP2 (error at first boot) and XP (hang while copying files). In Win7 several times I've seen corrupted screen, Aero switching off and sluggish performance. The error became less frequent when I set memory to 1333Mhz and raised voltage to 1.65v as there was only 1.5v in the SPD. And there wasn't dependency whether one module was used or both two — BSODs were inevitable.
    Later I've tested one Rendition 2Gb DDR3-1333 module. 1T or 2T — infrequent BSODs/freezes.
I've upgraded to BIOS v1.4 and installed two ordinary Hynix 1333Mhz CL9 modules. A new BSOD "IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL" began to appear along with these weird freezes roughly twice a week. My PC became more usable and I decided to keep Hynix memory.
Two months with BIOS 1.5 were stable - only 2-3 BSODs, but I think that were application errors or faulty ATI driver. Memory was operating 1333@[email protected].
BIOS 1.6 brought back freezes. 3-6 times a week. The only positive aspect: 3.24 Gb was available for Windows against 2.99Gb in previous BIOS versions. 19.02.2010 I updated to v1.7. So far no freezes, errors.
    Short resume
Freezes and errors are appearing in Win7 32-bit with BIOS 1-1.4 & 1.6. Memory voltage, frequency can affect the periodicity of errors. I haven't tried OC Genie yet because of unstable PC operation in normal mode.
    My observations
Many hardware sites stated that there's no need for any cooling sinks or heatpipes for P55 chipset and any cooling system of tested mainboards were slightly warm. In my case, the heatpipes and sinks are hot most of time. Maybe this is a result of stock Intel cooler (2cm height)?
Also 6 power LEDs are constantly on, slightly blinking when watching HD video.
In 3D games (GTAIV, Mass Effect2, Tropico3, Burnout, Red Alert3) even for many hours playing — no freeze or BSOD.
The computer normally goes to S3 (hibernate) and resumes for several times a day.
The temperature of individual components is within reasonable limits.
I can confirm that after browsing FLASH-rich websites you should expect freeze in 30min. This time shortens while watching fullscreen avi-files afterwards.
    My config
    Windows 7 32-bit Ultimate
    Intel Core i7-860 (stock cooler) /MSI P55-GD65 / Hynix 2×2Gb PC3-10600 / Sapphire Radeon HD4850 512Mb (reference) / Samsung HD501LJ, SP1614C / LG GH20LS15 / K-World TV878RF Pro / Chieftec CFT-560-A12C / CoolerMaster Cosmos S
    HP LP2475w / Logitech MX Revolution / Genius KB21e / Canon Pixma iP4000 / Wacom Bamboo Fun A5
It seems to me that there's some electric power issue in P55-GD65. Maybe it's related to MOSFETs overheating? Or weird Vdroop setting? Or, the worst, critical fault in the board design? Or we've got defective samples...

  • MacBook Pro Late 2013 retina randomly freezing

    Hi there,
I recently purchased a pretty tricked out MacBook Pro 15" Retina from the refurbished store. Totally stoked to have it, and I was really enjoying the machine.
However, I've been having these random lockups about once a day which is the only real fly in the ointment (but a pretty big one, my MacBook Air late 2013 or prior Microsoft Surface Pro were very dependable machines).
Here's some extra details about my system
    Mavericks: 10.9.4
    SMC version: 2.19f7
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,3
    Boot ROM version: MBP112.0138.B07
As far as I can tell, I'm on the latest available versions of everything (not including betas).
I have also performed the GeekBench Stress Test, an SSD stress test, a GPU stress test all of which the machine passed with flying colors. I have reset the SMC/NVRAM etc, performed the built in Hardware check with nothing but positive results (no issues found). There's no panics in the console log. Here's an excerpt from my latest freeze, which doesn't seem to have anything in common with prior freezes.

I'm still within the return window, however, I can't identify a specific hardware issue. I also have found that other individuals using MacBook Pros suffering from similar issues have had their machines & logic boards replaced with no improvement which leads me to believe the issue is in OSX or the EFI.
Any advice, tips or anything I might be missing is greatly appreciated.

    Hey Linc Davis,
It was not a hardware issue. I use a lot of refurbished hardware (iPhone 5, this MacBook Pro), and there's no discernible difference in dependability between refurbished and new. Apple's Refurbishment processes are stringent. I would like it if they were clearer about their refurbished warranty. I have purchased several Apple computers new, some of which displayed hardware faults out of the box (Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro), some of which didn't. Some issues only showed after some use (iBook G4).
Solution: I completely formatted the SSD and used the recovery partition to download a fresh copy of Mavericks from Apple. I then recovered my important data from a Time Machine backup, and re-installed the latest versions of my applications straight from the vendors. I did not do a "Migrate from backup" or anything like that, I treated it as an entirely fresh install. I believe migration from backups was the core of my issue.
Since then, I have not had a single freeze and the machine is more performant than before. My console is also a lot tidier. It's likely the install that came on the computer was faulty, Migration Assistant broke something, or some other bug appeared in the interim.
I'm very happy I don't need to waste time with a lengthy & tiresome replacement process. I hope this helps anyone else suffering from this issue.

  • Randomly Freezing and Running Hot

    Hi all,
So my MBP mid-2009 seems to randomly freeze without warning and after no particular operation or amount of time.  It could be idling with no programs open or be under heavy use and can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour, but it is guaranteed to freeze up and require a hard shutdown.  I've been running Mavericks since late 2013 and have only had this problem recently (about the past 3 weeks).  I've tried many little things but nothing too drastic (like disabling the hard disk sleep option and the Google Drive "show file sync status" option).  I have an SSD and a 500GB HDD installed and am running rEFIt because I have 3 bootable partitions (2 were originally clones of OS X and the other is Windows 8 BOOTCAMP).  I have noticed that the CPU is running much hotter than it should ( >80C with no load and the fan doesn't seem to spin up until it hits about 87C unless I use SMCFanControl).
Anyway I downloaded and ran EtreCheck and have pasted the output below.  I know I'm a little heavy on the RAM usage, but that shouldn't cause this kind of instability.  Also I'm not 100% sure (because activity moniter freezes up when I get the beachball), but it seems like Finder and Safari are the culprits of the crash.
Let me know if you need anymore info and thanks for your time!

Thanks, I'm notorious for not updating things.
I think I may have found the solution, my Crucial M4 was on firmware 0009, the latest is 070H.  Apparently the 0309 update fixed a freezing issue:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Crucial-m4-Firmware-BSOD,14544.html
Did the update to the latest, seems quicker already.  Will know within a couple of hours if it worked or not.
    Cheers!
