T400s Question of RAM and overall performance

I have a T400s.  P9600 @ 3.53 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, Windows 7 64bit, 64 GB Solid state hard drive
Recently while writing my Masters thesis using microsoft word, the computer was very slow and had difficulties switching between Microsoft office 2003 Word and Excel.  The Word doc. became rather large, filled with pics and files, etc. However working on other desktop computers with much slower processors and less RAM available I had no difficulties.
Furthermore, I used my wife's notebook, from another company, that has the same processor and RAM but operates on a 32 bit system and has a much better video card with 512 MB of memory with no problems.  Also, when monitoring the system performance I never see the RAM operating at higher than 34% which the 64 bit system needs to operate.  The last observation is what leads me to believe something is not working properly with my notebook that is only 6 months old.
Other than this issue this is the best computer I have ever owned, but I bought it mainly because it was ranked as the most powerful notebook in the industry, and I have problems with Microsoft office??
Is there a problem with using Office 2003 with windows 7 64bit?
Is this caused by the performance of the video card?
Or is there an issue with my RAM or Notebook?

A few questions:
1) Has the performance always been this way, or is it a new occurance.
2) Which video card do you have?  If you are using the integrated intel video make sure you have the most up to date Windows7 drivers from Lenovo, if that doesn't seem to help you could try different releases to see which performs the best, a good way to see if the video is the issue is to do something video intensive (1080p video or the likes).  It is somewhat unlikely that the video driver could influence the speed of office however since for the most part these are non-graphic intensive apps.  Another thing would be to try using the Windows Basic theme, if you still have issues it is unlikely the video card.
3) There are alot of factors which can influence memory usage in 64bit windows, keep in mind in most situations only 64 bit applications can access memory above 3gb.  What is the size of the page file?    If the system is reporting the full amount of memory it is unlikely that it isn't available to the system.   34% of your ram seems high for just the system since my 3gb system has 1.1 gb in use with firefox, aim, openoffice.org and all the lenovo apps and avira anti virus going.
4) What antivirus software are you using, has the system been scanned recently and have you tried to reproduce the issue with the antivirus disabled?
5) How full is your HD.  Even with SSD's things slow down quite a bit as the drive reaches it's capacity..  64GB is a little on the tight side for Windows7.

    Hi,
You can use Performance Monitor and add the required counters.
Check the below Technet article on Performance Monitor.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749249.aspx
Below are the steps to monitor the process in Performance Monitor.
    - Go to the Performance Monitor.
    - Right-click on the graph and select "Add Counters".
    - In the "Available counters" list, open the "Process" section by clicking on the down arrow next to it. Select "% Processor Time" (and any other counter you want).
    - In the "Instances of selected object" list, select the process you want to track. Then click on "Add >>" button. Click on OK.

  • HR infotype log in PCL4 and overall performance

    Hi there,
There has been a few threads about PCL4 performance with regards to reading, but I have a slightly different question:
We are working on an export program for HR masterdata and are considering using logging in PCL4 to be able to export only changed fields in the infotypes. To achieve this we need to add quite alot of extra fields and infotypes to the configuration in the IMG.
Does anyone have any experience about how additional fields and infotypes affect runtime and database performance of the system? How optimized is the system with regards to writing to this cluster?
It will obviously cause more data to be logged, and the database will grow slightly faster, but does it decrease responsiveness of PA30/40 for the end users? Is it possible to archive old data from this cluster? I'm guessing that it won't be a big problem, but any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Lars G. Gudbrandsen

    Hi Lars,
Probably you would get a better response in the HCM section as opposed to ABAP.
Maybe you can use change pointers, and badis rather, to acheive what you want but I am not 100% sure the requirement.
Additional fields and infotypes don't impact the system negatively in my opinion. It wouldn't affect PA30, unless the specific infotype is selected and then provided if it has been correctly created in PM01 it should be fine, also depending how many fields you are talking about of course. PA40 would only be impacted for those transacitons for which the infotype is included.
As for archiving, I am not sure, but once again i think HCM forum is your best bet.

  • Best RAM and HD Performance?

I need to upgrade my current generation MacBook to 4gb of RAM. I have an option of having heat sinks and I have two questions: One, will the RAM with heat sinks (or heat spreaders) fit into the slots on the laptop? Two, because of the small size of the RAM bay and over all thinness of the computer, would it make any difference even having heat sinks?
Also, I need some professional/informed advice about what HD to buy for the laptop. I have these options: 320GB/5400/8MB, 320GB/7200/16MB, or 400GB/5400/8MB. Then second option costs more then the other two, and the last costs 20 more then the first. What is the performance advantage of the second compared too the others?
I have been informed that data density, in addition to cache size and rpm, is a performance factor as well. All are 3.0Gb/s.
I do video/photo/sound/finishing/ editing, and, on a more personal note, I do some hard core gaming on the machine as well.

    lvguts wrote:
Awesome. I won't be spending extra for the heat sinks then.
I don't know of many people who use heat spreaders sinks except for people who build "show" computers and serious gamers or overclockers. If you want to, you could always add aftermarket heat spreaders if you've got an issue.
As far as the HD is concerned, you said that the cache would help with writes, do you know the increase in performance? As far as size is concerned, you seemed to intimate that the larger the drive the slower the unit would run. Is that correct? If so, the 400 would be knocked out. However, would the increase in RPM and cache size of the 2nd over the 1st overcome the slowness due to the large size (320GB)?
The buffer is just DRAM. It should be able to accept data as fast as it comes on the interface. Once it's maxed out, you're going to be limited by the speed that your drive media can take it. When you check specs, remember that's just the maximum transfer rate and you won't always be achieving that rate.
There's no doubt that a 7200 RPM should result in higher performance. It's probably only a matter of squeezing a little more performance unless you're doing something that's constantly accessing the drive for large amounts of data. It might help when you're starting up applications. If I were going to get another drive, it probably would be another 7200 RPM drive. If you think what you're doing is disk intensive, why not just run Activity Monitor and check on Disk Activity. You should get a good idea if what you're doing is taxing the drive.
I just said the boot time was a little longer. I'm not 100% why, although I vaguely recall someone saying it just takes a little bit longer for some sort of disk check at startup, if that makes any sense. It doesn't bother me since I usually put my machine to sleep instead of shutting down.

  • PS5 tool menus and overall performance

    Hi,
    I have a 17inch MacBook Pro, 2.3 GHz, 6GB of RAM, OS X Lion 10.7.2.
I have just reinstalled adobe PS 5.1 thinking it would solve a problem, but it didn't.
Right now, everytime I click on a tool in the tool bar, the tool activates fine, unless I have to hold down the buton to get the full menu for a specific tool. If I do need for example to get the Dodge Tool, and need to hold the Burn Tool in order to get there, the drop menu stalls for 5-6 seconds, than I can choose the tool, and then it stalls for another 6 seconds, and then I'm able to use the tool.
I have had a much less powerful computer which is running CS5.1 just fine (in this case even better!).
Can someone help me with this issue??
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.
Does turning off OpenGL in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

I've had a lot of devices through the years. With those years and devices comes a little bit of knowledge that may be of use here.

I followed your guide and was inpsired to do these COD tweaks on all my Android devices (Droid 3 and Droid x2) will they also work?
More importantly have you exp. any issues with HD play back? I havn't been able to fix this at all. Its really laggy on this device.
Do you have a safe list of things that we can freeze as well? There is a desktop app that you can freeze in Titanium which pretty much disables the home screen..i.e. dont freeze it. Im trying to get rid of most of this bloat ware.

  • W520 with 32 GB RAM and slow performance

    hi all
I post this info for those of you running into similar problems when upgrading the W520 to 32 GB RAM.
I've a W520 2720QM with Windows Server 2008R2 installed which I upgraded to 32 GB RAM with 4x8 GB CORSAIR Value RAM Modules. After doing this, the Laptop was incredibliy slow on performance and starting of programs took a long time.
I solved this with changing the Grafic option from Optiums to Integrated in the BIOS (1.35). After that, performace is back as before. In the BIOS there is a message saying, that the Optimus setting should be set only if Windows 7 is installed. As I'm not running W7 I had to change the setting.

Hmm, currently another guy with 24GB of RAM have similar issues here

  • After upgradingin iPhone 4 to iOS 7 the response time of the keyboard is dead slow (basically not able to write) and overall performance is a real challenge. Any ideas?

After upgrade to IOS 7, the iPhone of my wife is dead slow. It takes at least 10 seconds that the virtual keyboard responds and even the passlock reaction to the inputs is very much delayed. Like this she is not able to do write any messages or emails.
    Any ideas what can help?

Thank you!! I was getting very worried about upgrading.

  • RAM and performance

Would doubling my RAM to 1GB be a really wise investment or would I waste my money.
Let's face it, I kept my old G3 (the gray one) as my main computer for 8 years until I bought a new Intel iMac, so as you can tell I have already experienced a warp speed increase since the switch. Obviously I am not the kind of person who needs the latest toy (heck, all of my old Macs are still with me starring at the new iMac with jealousy). I know that you can never have too much RAM, but being a price-conscious individual and already loving the speed of the new iMac, I'm not so sure. So would you still recommend getting more? Where am I going to see the most performance benefits?

The short answer is yes, but the long answer is maybe.
I believe this question is unique and appropriate considering the very young age of the Intel Mac and the availability of universal applications. Adding RAM is the easiest way to see increased performance on you machine. But at the same time, it depends on your PPC versus UB workload. If you are running UB memory hogs - and especially PPC memory hogs that have to emulate under Rosetta - than yes, additional RAM will decrease the amount of virtual memory needed and speed the user experience up a bit.
Ask yourself how many applications you've set to open at login. Figure out how much multi-tasking you do. Determine how long you are willing to wait for programs to open, etc.
My best advice is to open your Activity Monitor after a restart and 15 minutes of what you would consider normal (opening apps, etc) activity and check the page outs under the System Memory tab. Alot of people would suggest deleting PPC applications to keep things hopping. I disagree. Some of those PPC apps might be essential to your day-to-day life with your Intel Mac.
If the number of page outs (meaning your computer has to use the hard drive as virtual memory) number is 5000 or so, boosting memory will help your day-to-day experience in a way you can recognize. Otherwise, leave it alone.
That said - I started with the stock 512 and upgraded to 2G. And the reason I did that was to test the machine's "out of the box" capabilities and also to provide "real world" experience to others. Did the upgrade help me - yes. But I do enough intensive work on my machine to make the difference worth the money. It's an individual decision in my opinion, and should be based on the criteria I've outlined above.
You can bet that the "built to order" 2Gig people will pile on this thread, but unless they have experienced the machine at stock configuration as you and I have, their information is quite pointless as they have no reference and will only provide links and such to articles they've read.

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

  • Macbook 7.1 (mid-2010) RAM and hdd upgrade questions!

    Hello!
In a bit of impulsiveness, I have just acquired a Apple laptop: a lightly used Macbook 7.1 (released mid-2010 and discontinued, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo). This is my first Apple computer!
I want to upgrade just a wee bit to squeeze a bit more performance out of what is currently probably a mid to low end laptop. Two questions:
    1) I know this Macbook takes 1066 MHz DDR memory. But I have two 2 GB sticks of 1333 MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SODIMM. Can I put those in? Or do I have to get 1066 sticks?
    2) I'd like to put a 7200 rpm hdd in it. Will there be any potential issues with heat? (I'm assuming a 7200rpm drive generates more heat than a 5400rpm drive.)
    Thanks!!!!

Faster RAM will have a great chance to lead to problems. If it works it will not be noticeably faster; The bus speed is still 1066. Ram being cheap I would either put in more ram and not faster ram, buy from high reputation suppliers like Crucial, OWC.
The 7200 will not lead to problems, be sure that it is compatible, the fastest way to replace if you are using (snow) leopard OS: make a clone of the existing drive to the new one, boot from it when still outside, to test;  replace the internal disk with the new one, et voila...

  • Performance with 2GB RAM and SSD

I own a late 2010 MBA, 13" baseline model with 2GB RAM, w/SSD.  I am using Snow Leopard, and it runs perfectly.  I would like to upgrade to ML to sync with ipad, but a concerned with performance.  I use my MBA for word processing, emails, and internet surfing, including occasional movie downloads.  I cannot upgrade the RAM on this model.  I would therefore very much appreciate if someone who has run the latest versio of ML on this model can inform me of its performance w/2GB RAM and an SSD drive.  (I know it can run; I want to know how it runs).  Thanks very much!

Just went through the same situation with my 2006 iMac. Technically my memory tops out at 3gigs, but I can get 4 in there if I insist (though the machine won't take full advantage).
After a considerable amount of research, and hearing some horror stories of some folks who dove straight into Lion on older machines, I opted on upgrading memory to 3gig, backing up all my data, then running a clean install of Snow Leopard. I then reinstalled all my stuff, followed with a run of Monolingual (a shareware program that removes unnecessary languages and builds), then ran OnyX (another shareware) to run scripts and check/repair permissions.
Works fantastic. Machine is operating perfectly on 10.6.8 and with the memory upgrade and clean drive its running faster than ever. Definite new breath of life in the machine.
As per memory upgrade, I'd recommend going to Crucial. They're very Mac friendly, customer oriented, and reasonably priced. They have a small program you can download that scans your machine to determine the correct chip required, then brings you stright to an info and ordering page. I managed to get a 2gig chip with shipping for about $25. With the Snow Leopard upgrade total cost was under $60 for resuscitation.

    I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM...
I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM?
Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?
I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...
    So the two questions are...
Is there any way to upgrade my VRAM, so that I can play games on steam?
Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?
    Other Info:
    I have a quad core i7 Processor.
My graphcics card is the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
I am also trying to play games on my BOOTCAMPed side of my mac, or my Windows 7 Professional side.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN REPLY,

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Premiere Elements 10 Bad/No performance on Win 8 64-bit Core i5-4440 16gig ram and GeForce GTX-650

Since just over a year i'm the owner of Premiere Elements 10, however it has never pleased me due to bad and inconsistant performance. Just putting video's one after another without any transitions works so-so a few frames per second (which is rediculus). But when i start doing things like motion keyframes, i have no preview at all just a bit of choppy audio. First i thought it was my laptop (a win 7 64-bit core i7 3rd gen, with geforce 610m and 8gig of ram) not bad but i thought well it is a laptop so it might be a bit slower, i'll have to deal with it. However since a few months i own a new PC (specs above), and experience the very same issue. No performance! Every time i think about editing a video i start the program and within a few minutes i get so angry with it that i close it and leave the video's be.
Pre-Rendering the workspace also has no effect at all. I have no red bar above the timeline (sometimes even green).
And worst of all it keeps messing up the timing of the video while editing. If you change a clip in the timeline all clips following (the motion edits) are destroyed. Which is only visible after a few hours of rendering, since live preview is only audio.
What in the world can be done to fix this problem. As you probably can read i'm pretty annoyed.
The free video editing software that comes with the gopro moves rotates and scales smoothly in live playback, so it is not impossible on the machine. (too bad the functionality of this program is so limited, else i could finally throw Premiere Elements away!).
Is there anybody who can help me in my despair?

  • Newbie, Questions about 865PE and DDR500 ram

I just purchased an MSI 865 PE Neo2 LS board, Kingston khx4000k2/512 PC4000 DDR500mhz kit, and a Pentium 4 3.0ghz 800 mhz frontside bus cpu. How do u set it up for dual channel, and what would your recommended bios and D.O.T. settings be for the ram and cpu. Basically if you had this setup, how would u set up the bios and D.O.T. for it to run as kick *ss as possible but running stable?

First of all; I have that same mem. in 1GB. Secondly, EVERY MO-BO, CPU, AND MEM. MODUALS  do not react  the same. So that said, I would START by installing the MEM. in sockets 1-A and 3-B, That will enable DUAL DDR recognition. Next go into the BIOS and set MEM TIMMINGS TO SPD (Serial Presence Detect). Then go to FREQ. and VOLTAGE page and SET PERFORMANCE to FAST, AND MEM SPEED to AUTO. Then (on same page) you should up the V-DIMM VOLTAGE to 2.7V. SAVE AND EXIT.. Then if you DON'Thave any problem with the POST, you can go back in and start to play with the TIMMINGS, PERF. MODE, RATIO, and (If you choose, OVERCLOCKING)...MY sys. is running stable with (TIME 2-3-3-7-8),(PERF. MODE TURBO), (RATIO 1:1), (FSB 220, MEM. SPEED=440), (V-DIMM V=2.7)...Keep in mind that I MEAN STABLE, I am sure I could go more,BUT WHY?..And as you can see I have the i875 and the P-4 3.2...Sean REILLY875
