T410 system restore interupted, Win 7

HI, My daughter’s boyfriend was having a problem with all his word docs on his T410 so he started a “System restore” from the Windows boot manager without backing up anything (I know, big red WARNING sign) and then immediately realized his mistake and powered down. The c: partition looks like it was already formatted. Is there any recovery from this, short of continuing with the Windows 7 reinstall? Thanks
Solved!

Hi Norse,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Windows crash while performing system recovery on your ThinkPad T410.
Check removing the HDD and connect it to other system with USB to SATA converter to verify if the C: drive is formatted or not, or else use any 3rd party boot CD (Linux boot disc, Hiren Boot CD) to verify if there is any DATA loss.
If it is formatted then you can proceed with Windows 7 installation.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

• Win 7 x64 - Need to repair a single driver, but can't use System Restore

Basic Info - an HP/Compaq Elite 8200 Convewrtible Minitower with 2 extra SATA drives & a Creative SoundBlaster card installed.
Background:  My system had begun going into Blue Screen (BS hereafter) every couple of days with a message that the BIOS was not "fully ACPI compliant."  I contaced HP and was able to obtain & install the needed BIOS upgrade.  Following this, I decided to do some housekeeping & checked for out-of-date drivers.  I installed these one at a time, as I had a previous bad experience with updating too many drivers, particularly Intel chipset drivers, at a single time.  When I finished the last update, which involved two drivers labeled IntStrA and IntStrB, if I recall correctly (I'm posting this from my PC at work, so I may have the names off by a character or so) my system began going BS after ~10 minutes or so.  Nearly every BS referenced the MicroSoft system driver wdf01000.sys.
It is my belief that either wdf01000.sys became corrupted, or the last 2 updates were having a negative impact on the M S driver.  Unfortunately, if I try to use System Restore to roll back the suspect updates, the system will BS ~1-2 minutes after the m essage "Restore is initializing" appears.
The only solution I can get from the HP Tech is to back up my data and then use the "Erase, Reformat & Reinstall" function from the Recovery Disks.  Unfortunately, with a system that goes B S every 10 minutes, it is impossible to perform a reliable back-up for all 3 disks, while the Recovery Disk is only willing to back up my drive F:\, not my primary OS Drive, C:\ or my other drive, G:\ (the HP Recovery partition is drive D:\).
My questions are:
1.  If the problem is a corrupted WDF01000.sys is it possible to obtain a reliable copy of & replace it?  (The HP tech warned about the danger of obtaining a copy of a MicroSoft sysem file from the internet - a danger of which I was fully aware - but, isn't there at least one system in HP's possession running Windows 7 x64 professional?  I should think a file supplied from HP would be sufficiently safe.  However, when I raise the possibility with the tech, there is no response.)
2.  If the problem stems from the last 2 Intel driver updates, is there a way to get a functional OS loaded from DVD that would peremit System Restore to run?  My last system had Win 7 installed from MS media and, as I recall, once loaded, the use of System Restore was one of the repair options.  The HP Recolvery disks only offer 2 choices - back-up (which would only cover drive F:\, with <10% of my 4+ years worth of data) or "Erase, Reformat & Reinstall."  Following this course would put at risk ~90% of my data, not to mention the grief of reinstalling a great deal of software.
3.  The HP tech tells me that, since Recovery is only willing to back up drive F:\, this is where the Recovered OS would be installed.  This would give me the independently loaded OS I sought in question 2.   However, I greatly fear that drive where recovery operated would be my primary OS drive, C:\.  If this were the case, the result would be disastrous!  I do have back-up via Carbonite, but I don't think this has been operating properly since the ACPI-related BSs began.
So -- any suggestions?  Anything that gets me out of this problem without loss of data will be most sincerely appreciated!

Hello TomF,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that after running some updates your system is getting BSOD errors associated with the Windows file wdf01000.sys. Now I cannot claim to be able to get you a copy of that file. I am not sure just replacing it would resolve your issue anyways. I can do this for you I can tell you that first the HP Compaq 8200 Elite Convertible Minitower PC is a commercial product. You can do this at you may get more assistance by posting this on the commercial forums at  Business PCs - Compaq, Elite, Pro.
Additionally, I would suggest you start your computer in Safe Mode and using an elevated command prompt run the command "SFC /SCANNOW". You can do this by right-clicking on the Command Prompt link and choosing Run as adminstator. Also, you can use chkdsk to run another repair on your files to see if they can be repaired.
The SFC /SCANNOW command will run the System File Checker to see if it can repair any corrupted system files where the chkdsk will do the same, but for ALL the files on your computer.
I am also providing you with resources on both below:
Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files
Run Check Disk from a Command Line to Check for and fix Disk Errors

• My win 8.1 laptop does not do system restores, never has.

Have had my HP 15 Touchsmart laptop for almost a year and it has never performed a system restore when requested.
After going through the motions, the message on the desktop says the action was not completed and to try it once again.
How much disk space should I assign it to use?  Meanwhile, it does not perform that much needed task.
I do not really want to undertake doing a complete reinstallation, it has happened to me before with my previous computer-starts to work correctly then it stops.  With my present laptop, sys restore has never worked.
Any suggestions or comments.

Hi there @efkorman716
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you have never been able to get system restore to work on your notebook. I did some searching, and found a common cause of this is often some third party software, commonly antivirus software.

• Problems with system restore points in Win 8.1 (keep increasing in size)

Hi,
I was sent here by Microsoft Support who seem to have no idea of the mechanics of System Restore and what could interfere with it. I've no idea where to post this, so I hope you can help in that.
I have the problem that my System Restore point (only a single point) keeps increasing rapidly in size from a few Mb to many Gb and even fills the C drive if I don't stop it. Setting a limit to the size doesn't help (in System Restore or VSS), as it ignores
it and increases the limit. I have tried all the usual (sfc, DISM, chkdsk, several antivirus and malware programs) with no success.
Obviously, I can turn off System Restore, but that isn't really something I want to do.

When you say "system backup", do you mean generation of system restore points or an actual backup? i don't use MSBackup.
Hi,
What I meant system backup is system backup feature that it would create restore point when you enable system backup automatically.
I made a test in our testing enviroment. limit restore point disk space usage to minize, create some restore point. When I create a seconde restore point, it would replace the former time point. The maxize disk space usage won't more than the limiation.
Therefore, please check the size of Restore Point in C:\System Volume Information if it's larger than system limiation.

• T43 - Lost USB and wireless after full system restore

Hi,
I've been struggling to get my work system back online for two days now.  It's a T43 which had become unbearably slow so after 3 years I decided to blow it away and use the system restore to set it back to factory.  However as seems to be the case all around, factory in this case means...nothing works and you have to manually install all of the drivers.
I upgraded my bios to 1.29 and embedded controller to 1.06
I installed drivers for every device and after a full day of futzing finally rid my device manager of unknown devices (mostly)  Here is a shot of it...
Device Manager
However the most troublesome things have been wireless and USB.  Given that I had no idea which wireless device was in my system I tried updating the driver through device manager and pointed it at each of the three available wireless adapters on the Lenovo T43 drivers page.  The first two I tried were rejected, but the third one took and the device finally started.  However, when I point it at my wireless network it just keeps switching back and forth between "Not Connected" state and "Aquiring address state".  I finally disabled it.  This device worked fine as did my wireless hub prior to the system restore.
Worst of all however is my USB.  After first doing the restore, all of the USB host controllers were unknown.  I could find no specific driver for them on the Lenovo site so I just right clicked on each of them and selected "update driver" and let it find whatever it could for them.  Low and behold they all popped right up one at a time and were identified along with the root hub.  At that point two new unidentified "other devices" were enumerated, one being my printer and the other my USB Western Dig backup drive.  The hard drive's power turned on indicating a signal from USB, however it never popped into the list of available drives in My Computer.   I was able to install the Samsung printer drivers from CD which took the printer out of the list of  "other devices", installed USB printing support, and set up the printer in the "my printers" directory.  However I can't print to it.  Print jobs just sit in the queue and the printer acts like nothing is happening.
It's terribly frustrating because all of my backed up work and environment settings is stored on my USB drive.  If I can't get USB working again, I'm in serious trouble.  Thus far, I've tried disconnecting the devices and reconnecting (it makes a system ding but nothing else happens).  I've tried uninstalling all USB devices from the manager and then doing a scan to reinstall them again.  Both times I've tried this, the devices once again come up as "other devices" and I have to repeat the earlier steps to get them property identified.
I can't find any excuse at this point these devices not to be working.  Can anyone please offer any further suggestions?  If I was unclear about anything I'll be happy to clarify the problem.  I'm despertate to get this thing working again fast.
Thank You !!

OK, let's try the older one:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62875
You may want to delete the entire Win subfolder before installing it, though.
Now, honestly, I don't quite understand why recovery disks would skip this driver. I've restored hundreds of T43/p machines and have never encountered such an issue.
Good luck.

• DID SYSTEM RESTORE, LOST ITUNES WONT RE-INSTALL

Right, this one is bugging me.
ive just got an ipod nano for my birthday (november) and have installed all my songs onto it.
but then after a few weeks of having itunes my pc decided it didnt like its sound device, so the sound on my pc completley vanished, so we tried re-installing all the drivers, no avail.
so, (this is on windows xp) i did a system restore to an earlier restore point (before itunes was installed!)
and then did another one, before that date too!
now, i dont have sound, i dont have itunes, i dont have quicktime.
and whenever i try install any of these i get this error message

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/vibrating_cake/ipodprob.jpg
same for quicktime, just with quicktime in the name rather than itunes.
this is incredibly annoying as i cant even watch dvd's on my desktop anymore because something is blocking my sound device
so what can i do?????????
(to summarise)
i have windows xp
i did two system restores BEFORE i installed ITUNES
i cant re-install ITUNES because i get an error ITUNES.MSI is on a network device which is unavailable.
i dont want to loose all my songs and albums because theres over 1000songs in there.
and itunes will not open or install!
oh... and i have tried backup on the system restore function on windows xp, wont backup BOTH system restores!

If you are not getting sound, go to your control panel and open: Sounds and Audio Devices Properties>>Audio tab and check that your Sound playback device is set to your sound card.
For reinstalling iTunes, after that mess I suggest you do a full removal of iTunes and related programs with Installer cleanup of any programs that do not uninstall, then a reinstall.
Here is the method, follow it carefully and don't leave anything out.
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program.
To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install Cleanup
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
XP
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Vista
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.
restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
If it does, install iTunes.

• Unable to Load Windows After System Restore from BIOS freeze

I have a pavilion G6 that froze after a BIOS Update ran. Here's what happened and here is what I did:
Uninstalled HP printer software; upon reboot, BIOS Update appeared and ran.
Upon reboot, Win 7 froze @ Welcome screen.
I was instructed this am on this forum to press F8 and do a system restore, which I did.
This appeared to work until about 30 mins ago when it began freezing again and opening to Safe Mode screen.
Now what??

Hi
Workaround:
There are few steps that has worked for few but not always..
Restart and tap F2.  F2  will show an option “BIOS Management” . Select BIOS Management and then select “Roll Over to the previous BIOS”
BIOS Management option will not be available if the system do not have HP_Tools partition installed or if it is deleted.
Fix if BIOS Management is not available
i)                    Press and Hold the Windows Key and B key at the same time when the system is turned off or follow the steps from this link: Recovering the BIOS using key press combination
iii)                 Shutdown the Notebook. Remove the Hard Drive and then turn the computer ON and tap F10 to load BIOS. If it loads BIOS then it should rollback to previous BIOS or it might show a black screen. Just leave the system ON for about 2-3 mins and turn it on with the hard drive and check.
If none of the above worked then most likely we need to bench the notebook as system will not boot from recovery discs.
Let us know how it goes!

• System Restore problem on Satellite C660-115

Hello everyone,
The Satellite C660-115 my niece has a problem and I would like to make it serviceable for his Christmas.
Turning on the computer's voltage giving as final result the message: * Can not find the operating system will ", so I tried System Restore by first pressing the 0 key, and after many tests, changing the order of the boot and the other (with F2 or F12) ... But there was nothing.
From there, I realized that I could not go further without original recovery DVD from Toshiba. So I ordered last Saturday and got today Thursday. After as indicated by Toshiba (boot sequence beginning on CD drive), the system begins to upload (Windows is loading files ...) and then propose, on a nice table, the available languages, and choose .. .dropoff window
If, until then, everything seemed to unfold as it should, that's that clicking the "next" button to validate my choice of language an error message appears in a dialog box named RecoGUI:
ERROR:. IOCTL_GET_DISK_LENGTH _INFO \\ \ PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.
When I press OK, then it is in French:
The hard disk # 0 is not available or incorrect RAID configuration!
I still presses OK (I do not have much choice) and then present the following window restoration that requires me to validate the language of the operating system to install ... French (Windows Win 7)
and states: The current size of restoration is to: Expert Mode
Again, I click OK and a warning box warns me that: All hard drives will be completely erased. Would you like to continue?
OK ... and cmd prompt appears that says (in short)
Checking for Drive V: V Drive not mounted ...
Ckecking for Drive C: ... C: unmounted!
ending with: ERROR Copying of Recovery Base files failed!
Press any key to continue (if I do, I find the Toshiba screen, and another cmd prompt that says so;
Waiting for ODD To Become available ...
ODD Drive D: ready.
Check for medium in Drive D; ...
Continue ...
Drvload: Successfully loaded X: \ Windows \ inf \ battery.inf.
No RAID - Normally continues ...
Installation in progress ...
Press any key to continue ... which, if I do, then placed below:
X: \ Windows \ system32>
That's where I stayed, because I always come back to the same.
Could someone be kind enough to help me solve this problem?
A big thank you in advance ...

From my point of few we should consider two possible issues.
1) faulty image on the new recovery disk
2) problem with HDD as well as the partitions
In my opinion you should check the HDD firstly.
You can run some tests, for example you could try to install the Windows system using a clean Microsoft Windows CD (image)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit image can be downloaded here:
http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65733/X15-65733.iso
But of course, you will not be able to activate this system without a valid serial key
So you can use this image just for testing purposes.
In case the image installation would run flawlessly, your recovery installation problem might be related to the faulty recovery media.
In such case you should try to contact the recovery media provider in order to get another, new good working media.

• Downloads folder missing after system restore from Time Machine

I installed a new HDD, installed Leopard, and the did a system restore from Time Machine. Everything seems to work fine except from a big question mark in the dock, where downloads folder should be. Any suggestions pls?

Thank you very much for your quick answers.
Probably the problem originated from excluding the Downloads folder from my backup, although it should have been there in my new installation. The interesting thing was that this folder were nowhere to be found in the Finder, and by trying to download something from Safari, it just wouldn’t.
I did a Repair Permissions from the HDD, not the Leopard DVD, and all came back to normal.
I have to admit, that coming from The Win world, this HDD replacement was the easiest and fastest ever, by far!

• Need to find %SystemRoot%\WinSxS\folder_name to find missing system restore service module

My ability to do a system restore is zilch.
It turns out that my Win 8.1 laptop is unable to run sys restore due to the service module being  missing.
And I have to work around that and set up a registry key to do a correction.
I have no idea where the file %SystemRoot%\WinSxS\folder_name.
All of this to correct error 126 in services.msc
I've had plenty of times where a reinstallation of my computer would do the trick--however, I just don't want to lose everything.
System restore is a feature that I use, and it is NOT working at all.  Rather disappointing--it's always something.

• System restore is not working

System restore is not working for my Itouch. I am getting a picture of a white cord and and arrow pointing to Itunes logo... any suggestions?

It sounds like there is definitely a system problem. The whole OS seems to be messed up.
Do you have an MS Windows 7 disk?
In such case you could start the Windows 7 Startup Repair process using the MS Win 7 disk.
Boot from Win 7 disk, after the temporal files has been load, you should get and window where you could choose between the OS installation and other options. The second option called Repair you Computer is the one which would be needed to get the system repaired.
Then wait for System Recovery Options to locate Windows 7 on the HDD.
Then choose the Windows 7 installation and then the next window should appear providing the option to repair the system Startup Repair
But in case this workaround would not help you, the system should be reinstalled once again using Toshiba Recovery disk

• After a System restore event I am unable to 'unpack' the Abobe Creative Cloud App to load it.

I purchase a subscription to the cloud (Lightroom / Photoshop).  The APP all downloaded fine after the purchase and the short cut worked, I managed to download the 2 software packages and started to use them.  I then had to action a Win 7 Systems restore.  Following this the software was no longer on the Laptop.  I therefore tried to re-download the APP.  This initially seemed to work OK but when running it, the APP appears to start the loading process, then just disappears after a few seconds.  I have waited for hours to see if it would finally burst into life.  Can anyone suggest what I need to do to restore functionality and what the issue is?  Many thanks in anticipation.

• Windows 8.1 refuses to shut off System Restore when I tell it to do so

This problem is driving me crazy! Windows 8.1 will not let me turn off System Restore.
My OS and programs are on a solid state drive. I realized the other day that I only had 8 GB of space left...even though I had not done any other installations. I discovered it was because the System Restore feature was taking up 50% of my drive (about 60 GB).
I have other ways to back-up my system...so I want to simply turn off the feature. The OS lets me turn it off for the two other drives on my system, but when I turn it off on the "C" drive, it says that it's disabled...but it then continues to dump
backup files and drain hard drive space. If I leave it "on" and try to adjust the "max usage" for the feature in order to limit how much it uses on the SSD, it simply ignores my request and reverts back to the 50% default later on...sometimes
right away and sometimes a little bit later.
Most recently, I tried setting the maximum usage to roughly 6 GB. The setting was used successfully for a few days..but then all of a sudden, it popped back to the 50% allocation allowance. I'm thinking it did it as a response to hitting the 6 GB max in the
course of its work.
I don't know what else to do. If the feature is disabled, why is it still dumping files and taking up space? Why can't I completely turn it off like it will allow me to on the other drives?
Thank you for your help!

Hi,
You could use T. Kujala's method to clear the system restore point.
And then use group policy to disable the system restore function:
1. Click WIN+R key.
2. Type gpedit.msc to run box.
3. Navigate to
Computer configuraton>administrative templates>system>System restore
find
Turn System Restore Off
Enable it.
