T410 vs E420

I have used my T410 for 2 years. Since there's a promotion for the Edge E420, I'd like to know if it is good idea to replace my T410 to the E420?
Specs:
T410:14.1" /i5-520M/4GB/320GB
E420:14.1"/i5-2410M/6GB/500GB
Thanks

I have a T520 and just got my e520 todya, I guess I can give you some insight on the difference though it might not exactly apply to the e420.
Aesthetically, the Edge thinkpads look a lot nicer then the t-series. It looks cleaner rather than the typical "clunky" design. The keyboard design is different but still have the "thinkpad feel" to it.
The larger trackpad and longer trackpoint buttons are nice touches. The top row "F" keys are similar to that of macbooks, volume control, screen brightness, etc.
The keyboard light is gone and there's no indicator lights at all other than the dot on the "Thinkpad" that lights up.
One thing I really didn't like was that there was no option for an FHD+ display which I have gotten used to on my T520.
Hope this helps!

  • T410s with extremely poor performance and CPU always near 100% usage

    Hi,
I've had my T410s for almost a year now and lately its been starting to get extremely slow, which is odd since it used to be so fast.
Just by opening one program, Outlook, or IE or Chrome, just one window, it will start to get extremely slow and on task manger I can clearly see the CPU usage at 100% or very near.
Also another thing I noticed was the performance index on the processor dropped from 6.8 to 3.6!!!
I did a clean Windows 7 Pro 64Bit install, I have all Windows and Lenovo updates installed and the problem persits
What is happening and what should I do??
    Thank you

thank you again for your answer,
I've done that but hard drive health is also ok as you can see from the screenshot.
IAt the time of the screenshot I had just fineshed to boot up the laptop and it wasnt hot at all.
I am getting desperate here, I am unable to work with my T410s

  • T410s Optimus game performance / heat

    Hello, I have a 2 year old T410s.
I'm  trying to play the Diablo 3 beta.  However, after a couple minutes of in-game action the game slows down to a crawl.
I have Thinkpad Fan Control running at fan state 80 (6000+ RPMs) and even so the temperature is reaching the low 90 degrees C.
I know there have been overheating issues with the T410s.  Have these ever been fixed?  Do I need to contact warranty support for assistance?
    Thanks

Well I'm playing a game that should run on Intel HD graphics.  I've had similar problems with SC2 which was an older game as well
And the temperature thing has come up while doing things such as watching netflix videos.  I'm assuming that temperatures hot enough to nearly boil water aren't a commonplace sort of thing
I'm not playing Crysis or anything.  You would think a $2k (at the time) computer would have some ability to use its graphics chip, no?

  • T410 lock-ups, running out of options

Hello all, this is my first post.
I just got a lenovo thinkpad t410 from CDW on clearance.  When I first got it, I wiped the whole drive and installed Ubuntu 10.10.  Every now and then the computer would completely lock up: to be more descriptive, the mouse would stop moving, but the chassis fan would still run and the drive would still appear to be "working"... I figured it was for lack of updated drivers.
I threw Windows 7 Professonal on it today.  I updated most of the drivers through Windows by downloading files from Lenovo's driver site.  I'm not 100% sure I had lock up issues before installing Windows, but I do know that when I put Ubuntu back on my sytem (10.10) alongside Windows in separate partitions, the first install completely froze and I had to re-try.
Anyways, towards the end of my driver update process, I found that when I turned the computer on, it took no less than 15 seconds (past log in) for the screen to lock up, in the same fashion as earlier with a clean Ubuntu 10.10 install.
I searched online and rolled back the most recent drivers I installed, but it still froze.  Then I updated BIOS to the most recent version as per Lenovo's site... still freezes.  I am at my wit's end.  Could this be a hardware malfunction?
EDIT: I forgot to mention, now that I have both Windows 7 Pro and Ubuntu 10.10, the lock-up occurs on BOTH operating systems.  It seems to lock up when it tries to access networking.  I updated the network drivers very early in my Windows installation and had no problems for a few hours until I installed more drivers.

Have you tried creating a new user and new iTunes libary for testing purposes?
    AC

  • Fan error t410s

Anybody have experience with fan error? It made very loud noise while I was using my computer and after that I turn my computer off and cannot turn it on. It shows fan error. Very disappointed with my first thinkpad. I got it a year ago. Just passed warranty less than a month. Touch pad and battery life also are not good.

Take off the keyboard and see if the fan can spin freely.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-72739.html
You need to turn off Gesture Filtering and Edge Tap Filtering for the touchpad and maybe turn the touch sensitivity up. Average battery life on the T410s should be around 2 to 2.5 hours it seems.

  • T410s Fan Error on Boot but works sometime...really confused

Hi, I bought the t410s back in 2010 april or march. About 7-8 month later, I started getting Fan Error on boot after the thinkpad screen. If I don't do anything, the computer shuts off automatically, but if I hit escape, it would continue boot and start up (without a working fan).  I know that there are other threads about the fan error but none of them mentioned this. Most of the times after it continue booting after escape on fan error, I would do a cold reboot and the Fan Error would be gone. So Im guessing that the hardware is fine because if they faulty, then it shouldn't work at all. So recently, I did a clean install of windows 7 and updated all drivers and bios. After update, it was working for like 4 days so I thought it was just a software issue but now the problem have returned, same as before. Sometimes it boot with fan error, sometime no error. And after shows fan error, if I escape and reboot, most of the time the error would be gone. Anyone know why this is or what is going on here? Anything would be appreciated, thanks.

    hey dy58,
since it is hard to replicate this issue as sometimes it does happen and sometimes it does not, i do recommend bringing the unit to an authorize service center for them to investigate.
do contact the tech support team for information of the nearest service center

  • [T410] discrete gfx - Problem with Video Card and Windows Aero -anyone using 4Gb memory modules?

    [3/3/2010 Update]
There's a issue of using 4Gb sticks on T410 currently that results in video output artifacts and aero interface problems when using Lenovo supplied drivers v8.16.11.8825. I think I can call it confirmed (Three people including me face this issue).
Possible workaround is to install modified EliteBook 8440p video driver (read along this thread) comes with a BIG drawback of not being able to change brightness level within Windows 7. To sweeten it a little bit - you can set luminance level at POST screen, when computer boots up.
    [Original Message]
Encountered strange behavoir of my T410.
I have a T410 with 256Mb of Video Memory and 1440x900 display, a T61 with 128Mb of Video Memory and 1400x1050 dsplay and external monitor HP w2338h with 1920x1080 resolution.
If I connect external monitor to my T410 and launch Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 - image blinks and comes back with Aero disabled. Looking through event logs reveals the lack of memory. Entry information can be found further.
Now If I do the same with my old Thinkpad T61, connect the same monitor using the same cable - I can open as many Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 instances I like (tried 5) and nothing blinks and Aero stays enabled.
Actually I find ridiculous, a notebook with more VRAM cannot archive the same performance as notebooks with less.
Does anyone know what path should I pursue to solve this issue?
UPDATE: Simply running multiple instances of Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 without external monitor causes Aero disabled as well.

This must be buggy drivers, on Lenovo download site is just the one and the only initial driver for T410 graphics card.
What software were you actively using when this error occured?

    Fixed
Resume did not work after second suspend. Fixed by updating BIOS. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/532374
Font antialiasing misconfiguration that made small fonts look bad; had to edit ~/.fonts.conf manually to defeat the system preventing antialiasing at small font sizes. Screen is small (14") but has very high resolution (1440x900), so this seems to work ok here.
Evolution doesn't autocomplete the email addresses of people you communicate with regularly. Fixed: turn on automatic contacts and autocomplete.
Printer config didn't work til I changed system-config-printer to not use the Python on the user path: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-config-printer/+bug/328657
Emacs copy/cut (meta-W, ctrl-W) doesn't put the text being operated on into the X clipboard. Likewise, putting something into the X clipboard doesn't make it possible to paste it into Emacs via ctrl-Y. Fixed via:
    (global-set-key "\C-w" 'clipboard-kill-region)
    (global-set-key "\M-w" 'clipboard-kill-ring-save)
    (global-set-key "\C-y" 'clipboard-yank)

Toggle state of hardware mute button and software mute button not synchronized. If you hit the hardware mute button, it lights. If you subsequently unmute via software, the sound is umuted, but the hardware mute button remains lit. Pressing the lit hardware mute button in that state will result in the hardware mute button becoming unlit but the sound muted. Seems to have gotten fixed in upgrade to 2.6.34-999-generic kernel while trying to fix USB resume issue.
USB broken after resume: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/566149 . (Installed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2010-05-06-lucid/ aka kernel version 2.6.34-999-generic as per the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds while waiting for "official" kernel update from Ubuntu).
    Outstanding
Sometimes Bluetooth icon in indicator applet shows a red X next to it, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't bothered with Bluetooth yet, so I don't know why it's changing state.
Sometimes audio mute button stops working. What's in syslog: keyboard.c: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 240 for each button press. Not sure why it works sometimes and not others.
HDMI audio probably busted with installation of http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2010-05-06-lucid/ to fix https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/5661492. KDE came up and warned me the device had disappeared when I rebooted with the new kernel.
Complete system lockups at various points (maybe once every couple days) requiring a hard power reset. I haven't been able to distinguish a pattern yet. Might be related to the wireless errors below; someone else claimed that a similar wireless card got hot enough under Linux to cause disconnects and weird system behavior. I haven't seen crazy temperatures yet though.
Wireless network card (Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200, using the iwlagn driver) freaks out every 20 minutes or so and "restarts" (whatever that means). Seems to be a firmware problem. Symptom: Microcode SW error detected.  Restarting 0x2000000. in syslog. sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off doesn't fix it, upgrade to 2.6.34.99 kernel didn't fix it, can't seem to find any newer firmware to try than what's in http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-6000-ucode-9.193.4.1.tgz. Reported bug at http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2205 as per http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?n=fw_error_report
Some potentially related Ubuntu info: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1142917.html
WTF in syslog, every so often: wpa_supplicant[1196]: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys plus about 10 other lines of gibberish. Probably related to the microcode problem above, no use trying to figure it out until that gets fixed. See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/548992
At boot time, xdpyinfo | grep resolution still reports wrong DPI (reported: 96x96; actual: 120x120) and screen size (reported: 381x238mm; actual: 300x190mm) even after generating an xorg.conf and adding a DisplaySize 300 190 to the single Section "Monitor" in the config. This doesn't seem to be harming anything, but I don't know really what uses this info. Using xrandr -dpi 120 fixes the resolution and screen size reported by xdpyinfo.
Firefox is a problem child for display at 120DPI (native screen DPI); some fonts are huge or tiny when they shouldn't be. Setting the layout.css.dpi in about:config to 120 seems to have no effect. This makes Firefox unusable for me on this system. Thankfully, Google Chrome doesn't have the same problem.
    Fingerprint reader unsupported.
When bringing up a backgrounded Emacs window, sometimes Emacs refuses to give me control of the point in that window until I sacrifice the chicken of selecting any item from that window's menu bar.
Emacs acts upon first click of any frame; clicking in a background emacs window reposititions the point in that window. I tried to fix this by adding (setq x-mouse-click-focus-ignore-position t) to my .emacs file as per http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Mouse-Commands.html. This actually solved the problem: the first click of a window no longer repositioned the point. Unfortunately, contrary to the docs and contrary to the experience of somebody else in #emacs on freenode IRC, this setting also makes the mouse useless for selecting text, moving the point, or scrolling the window text in emacs. It just won't do any of those things for me anymore when this option is set. I can't even shift click on a window to set the font size. This symptom is worse than the problem I was trying to solve by doing it, so I left it off.
Audio CD burning doesn't work from Rhythmbox: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/brasero/+bug/543892
Pulse Audio advertises airport express send capability; it doesn't actually work (very choppy playback, unlistenable). http://pulseaudio.org/ticket/495#comment:23
Opening Rhythmbox from the applications menu doesn't actually open the main window, it just creates a toolbar icon. You then need to know enough to go click on "Show Rhythmbox" in the toolbar icon dropdown.
Konversation: sometimes the mouse pointer "disappears" while hovering over the nick list and the channel list. Only fixed by a restart of Konversation (closing the window and restoring it from the system tray doesn't help).
Cut and paste is, as always, horrific. You need to use Shift-Ctrl-C in the Gnome terminal vs. Ctrl-C in other Gnome apps; Emacs meta-W doesn't put things onto the X clipboard by default, etc. I really don't understand why you can't remap cut copy and paste under Gnome. If you could remap the Gnome keybindings for cut, paste, copy, etc, I'd bind copy to Windowskey-C, paste to Windowskey-V, cut to Windowskey-X, and Undo to Windowskey-Z. Then at least for all Gnome apps that followed the system keybindings, most of the pain would disappear, because the cutnpaste shortcuts wouldn't step on alternate meanings.
Still doesn't look quite as nice as the Mac does, dispite newer and better video and display hardware, no matter how many hours I spend messing around with display settings, font settings, etc.

Not sure how you figure it's an "advanced router" problem.  I'd be happy to buy a different router, but I'd need to be told which one to buy. The router I'm connecting to is a barebones Linksys WRT54G (the blue and black one with the two antennas that you see everywhere).  These routers are maybe the most common router on the planet, AFAICT.
I have also seen Compiz lockups, but I didn't mention those in the above; the lockups I'm seeing are true system lockups.  The system stops responding to any input on network, so it cannot even be restarted remotely.

  • DVI port not working anymore after latest BIOS update on T410s

    Hi all,
after installing the most recent BIOS update via ThinkVantage System Update, the DVI port in my T410s does not work anymore. Nvidia and Intel display drivers are in place, and I also checked the BIOS settings, but to no avail. It appears that the DVI port is no longer recognised by the system at all.
    Thanks and cheers!

  • Connecting the T410s to an external monitor

    1) Excuse the ignorant question but how would you connect the T410s to an external monitor?  The T410s has a DisplayPort port, but what if the monitor does not have a DisplayPort port but an HDMI port?
    2) Which leads into my second question.  How would I connect the T410s to two external monitors?  I guess whatever the answer is to the above question, but connect some kind of a splitter coming out of the T410s DisplayPort port?
    3) And lastly, take a look at this link...
    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=19C791A03AF24034A0011B825513BCED&tabname=Gallery
Once you get there, click on T400s below the thumbnails.  If that long link I pasted does not work right, it is the T-series gallery on Lenovo's site.  In one of the pictures, it shows the T400s connected to two external monitors, but does not say how.  They brag at how you can export 2560x1600 to two monitors without the use of a dock.  Is this possible even though the T410s video card tops out at 1440x900?
    Thank you.

Thank you, lead_org.  You've been very helpful.  Last 2 questions hopefully.
    1) Regarding the use of DisplayPort on the Mini Dock Plus, since DisplayPort transmits audio as well as video (unlike the old style VGA which only sent video), if I connected the Mini Dock Plus to the HDMI port of my monitor (using a DP-to-HDMI adapter of course) would I lose audio out coming out of the green miniplug port on the mini dock, since the system might assume I want all audio to go through the DisplayPort cable?  I have seperate external speakers I want to use and not the ones on the monitor.
    2) Do you lose any quality when you connect to an external monitor using a Mini Dock, as opposed to connecting directly from the T410s itself?  The reason I'm asking is that some people claimed that using the green miniplug audio port on the dock generates a much lower volume than if they were to plug the speakers directly into the laptop instead.

  • T410 2xMonitors + Built in Display

    Greetings,
I've had a search around as I'm sure someone would have asked this before, but have been unable to find an answer:
I'm currently using my T410 with two Dell 1908FP monitors - 1 via the DP port, the other via the VGA port. This disables the built in laptop display. Is there anyway of enabling the built in display as well as the two 1908FP's?
Well I don't know how much the T410 varies or what information you'll need so this is taken from the Systems Information:
    Operating System: Win XP SP3
    Driver Vision: 6.14.10.5237

    Video BIOS: 2026.7

no unless you have the Nvidia optimus technology. You would would have to get adapters, such as the Usb2vga or usb2dvi converters.

  • T410 with integrated graphics - DVI output not working on Mini Dock 3 (4337)

I tried connecting my external monitor to the DVI output of the Mini Dock and it did not work.  I have since connected it with no issus to the VGA output.
However, I want to use the digital (DVI) connection for my monitor........how can i fix this issue?
NOTE: I have a T410 with the integrated graphics so my laptop screen does not display while docked (I keep the lid closed).

    Hi MarkinIt,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with no Display when connected to docking station on your ThinkPad T410.
Have you checked updating the Intel graphic driver from Lenovo support site?
Please provide the current Graphic driver version showing in device manager.
Is the system having Windows 7 or Windows 8 OS?
    Hope this helps.

  • Connecting my t410s with an old composite/ s-video TV

    Hi,
Just bought the t410s with switchable graphics and I was wondering if it was possible to connect it to my old composite/ s-video TV (through VGA or HDMI or other option...). I already spent a considerable amount on the computer, don't really feel like spending $100+ on a converter from VGA to S-Video. Any options?

  • T410 : keyboard problem after juice spill

    Hi,
I have recently spilled some fruit juice (sweet and sticky) on my t410's keyboard. Here are the problems caused and the different steps I took to try and solve them :
    1. Switched off the laptop, waited a day. Switched it back on. The laptop worked normally except for various keys, mostly in the first row of letters (qwertz...) that didn't work (didn't react when pressed), and others who were sticky and got stuck when pressed.
    2. Took out the keyboard and soaked it in alcohol (normal alcohol as I couldn't find isopropil alcohol) to wash out the juice deposits. Wiped with towels, then let it dry half a day. Put it back in. It was worse than before, the power button seemed to be shorted or sth. The laptop could not be tuned on with the power button. It could be turned on using the fingerprint reader though. But then it had a strage behaviour, kept turning on and off on its own.
    3. Took out the keybord again, removed all the keys, including the power/mute/volume... Sprayed it repeatedly with contact cleaner (Vistony brand, made in Peru) . Then let it dry. This didn't improve much.
    4. Waited over the week end, tried again. Now the power button works. When I turn on the laptop, before it can boot, it beeps repeatedly and shows an error essage : "error 210 stuck key : 10". Using an external USB keyboard, I can press escape, and boot to Windows. But the laptop's keyboard is unreactive and there is a continuous beep (frequency of about 2 beeps per second, continuous). In the Lenovo diagnostix test for the keyboard, none of the keys work.
Is there anything I can do to try and recover the keyboard ? Or just buy a replacement ? If I could at least get rid of the beep, I could use the laptop at home with the external keyboard, until a solution if found to fix the laptop's keyboard.
    Cheers

    dondrito, welcome to the forum,
I admire your determination to save your keyboard, but honestly feel it's time to part yourself from it and accept it has sadly departed and find a replacement.
An option would be to attach the system to a port replicator or mini-dock, which have power on switches, detach the internal keyboard from the mainboard and start the system from the port rep. or mini dock after attaching an external keyboard to either or your notebook. Not a good solution if you need to travel.
p.s. a port rep. or mini-dock will cost more than a keyboard.

  • T410 performance issues..

My t410 laptop is pretty slow from last few days.  Haven't  installed anything specific except Orace db express edition.
Moment I start few programs, it takes lot of time to switch from one program to another..
Right now, following programs are running
    Samtime Client
    Microsoft outlook
3 ie windows with video playing in one of the windows.
    few putty sessions..
It takes hell lot of time to switch from one of these programs to another.
Even spell-checker on outlook or browsing on ie takes easily 30 secs to respond..
Is it something to do with main memory size.. It is 2GB.  Do i have to upgrade it..
It is baffling as my 5 years old dell laptop (pentium IV, 1Gb ram) runs better than this.
do we need thinkpad preloaded softwares like thinkvintage toolbox.

We have just completed an enhancement to the Forum and believe you should see much better site performance
    THANKS!
