T410s External Display and Safely Remove Hardware Problems

I have two problems with my new T410s with Windows 7.  First, I use it with an external display.  It works fine when I set the dispaly settings to Projector Only and set the power settings to Do Nothing When I Close the Lid.  However, when I restart the computer the screen image on the external display is often mis-sized, does not cover the whole screen, and has part of the image cut off.  If I open the lid and change the display setting to computer only, then back to projector only it works fine again.
Any ideas on why it will not hold the proper setting when I turn the computer off?
The second problem is common to both my wife's X201 with Windows 7 and my new T410s.  If you click on Safely Remove Hardware/Eject Mass Storage Device both computers will tell us it is now safe to remove our device.  However, if the device is one of our compact external backup drives the device's light will still be on and the disk will still be spinning, so it seems it cannot really be safe to remove it.  This happens even if we wait a minute after the safely remove indication to see if the external drive shuts down after a short delay - it doesn't!
As a result, my wife and I are shutting down our computers whenever we want to remove an external storage device.  Any comments or ideas would be welcome!

For anyone who is concerned about the "safely remove hardware" issue noted in my original post, I have done more research and found that Windows 7 maintains power to the USB ports after safely remove has been executed in order to allow devices like MP3 players to continue charging after they are safely removed.  Windows XP actually shut off the power to the USB ports and this is what I was used to until I got a new T410s with Windows 7.
This means an external HDD's disk will also keep spinning.  However, the safely remove sequence is SUPPOSED to cause the disk's heads to move away from the disk and return to their at rest position, so there should be no damage to the HDD if it is removed even though the disk is still spinning.
Since I have no way to assure this is happening I am still turning off my computer and making sure the disk has stopped spinning before I remove my USB HDD.
I would appreciate comments from people who know more than me about this issue, especially if my info. above is not correct!

  • IPod doesn't sync to iTunes and "safely remove hardware" doesn't appear

I've got an iPod Nano (2nd generation) which is still in excellent condition. I download some songs from iTunes, and decide to sync them to my iPod. When I plug my USB adapter into my computer and then my iPod, I expectd the title "syncing iPod" to come up, but it didn't. I also looked at my taskbar, and the "safely remove hardware" icon was not there. Also, the device home for my iPod does not come up in iTunes, not allowing me to make any changes to my iPod. Can you help me with this very weird problem I am having?

  • IPod only connects as Removable Disk (E:) and says "Safely Remove Hardware

I recently posted about this problem and since then, I have not been able to do a thing. I have done the 5 R's, and still nothing. This is very frustrating, I just want my iPod so update again. The music and videos are still on it but some songs just totally skip, and few videos don't work correctly. Still, even in disk mode, the iPod connects as Removable Disk (E:) and pops up into the taskbar as "safely remove hardware." I've read about formatting the iPod but I really don't want to mess it up. My patience is waring thin once again.
This weekend I am looking to go to the Apple Store to see if they can see what is wrong with it and get it repaired, or just get a new one. I'll post again on what happens. Any help about my problem will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

I've been having a similar problem with ipod software not interacting with the windows system correctly. I was having to go through the "Restore" defaults process over and over (for last three days) with no success. I went to the Apple Store, Genius counter at Westfield Mall today and the tech did a reset to "Restore Defaults" with no problem from an apple machine. He also loaded 2000 songs successfully.
I bought the 60G ipod with video Thursday this week and have been fighting with it since then.
At home, I tried ipod updater with Restore Defaults and the software failed and corrupted the ipod folder index file. I've been trying to do all this through a PCMCI Dual Link card (which has the USB2 port on it) and was getting all sorts of different types of problems and errors (like the folder with the "!") and having no luck getting the windows format through the "Restore Defaults" choice. In an act of desperation I decided to try a regular USB port (I believe it's the 1.1 version, but not sure) on the computer directly and was able to get the factory setting "Restore" into the ipod (but with a slower speed of data transfer). I rebooted the computer and then brought up iTunes to do the sync of songs which took about 1.5 hours (for ~2000 songs) but worked fine. I've shut down and restarted the computer a few more times since then and iTunes still finds the ipod on the same USB port and does the sync without issue.
I believe my problem was the ADS Technology Cardbus Interface Card (which has Firewire & USB 2.0 ports) and plugs into the PCMCI slot on the side of my computer. If I don't use this card and instead use a regular USB (1.1?) port, the wide variety of problems I was having have disappeared.
My 2 cents for what it's worth.

  • Cannot eject ultrabay harddisk in "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject media"

    Just installed my T430s with Win7 x64.
But I have a problem with ejecting my ultrabay harddisk using "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject media" icon.
I installed the lastest Intel Rapid storage driver (RST) ver. 12.8.10.1005 from Lenovo download.
Ultrabay harddisk not in the list using Lenovo RST driver!
If I use the native Win7 driver (Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller) it works:
    Works fine using native driver.
I assume the Intel RST driver might have some improvement to the native driver.....so I would frefer using that.
This is how it looks like in the Device Manager:
    Intel RST driver:
    Win7 x64 native driver:
Any suggestions......does anyone have a newer RST driver?
Tried to find one at Intel without luck :-(

  • Ethernet Controller & Safely Remove Hardware With Windows 7 On X200

    Hi,
I'm having a weird issue with Windows 7 on my X200. For some reason, my ethernet controller is being displayed in my system tray under "Safely Remove Hardware". Is anyone else having this problem? If you are not having this problem, would you mind checking what driver you are using so that I can try it as well?
I have the "Intel 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III" and I'm using the driver that was installed automatically from Windows 7 I presume. Its seems like the only option though...
Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • When MagSafe unplugged, the external display and laptop need to be restart

Whenever I unplug my MagSafe when using dual-monitors, my MacBook and External monitor need to turned off/restarted. Why is this?

So, you're saying that when you disconnect the power cord (MagSafe) BOTH of your displays either go completely dark while the MacBook is still running or freeze (static image, nothing gets updated) or begin to display distorted video. Then when the displays enter one of these states they remain dysfunctional until you power cycle each one (which would mean that for the MacBook's display you'd have to restart the MacBook). Otherwise, are you suggesting that your MacBook crashes when you disconnect the MagSafe? Also, do you have to reconnect the MagSafe before you can restart the displays (if this is the case, then are you sure that your battery just isn't "dead")?
What type of connector are you using for the external display? Is it Mini DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA? If DVI, is it dual-link?
In any case, without additional details I'd guess that you have a grounding problem between your external display and the MacBook. This shouldn't happen unless there is a problem with your video cables or adapters or with the ports on either the MacBook or your external display. Have you tried connecting the 3.5mm audio output on your MacBook to an audio input on the external display (as a test to provide another grounding path)? Also, is your MacBook power supply plugged into the same AC outlet as is your external display?
I guess the MagSafe connector could also be at fault if it is shorting to ground when you remove it from the port on the MacBook. What happens if you disconnect the power supply directly from the AC plug and then disconnect the MagSafe?
Lastly, is there any chance that you are getting a static electric discharge when you touch the MacBook to remove the MagSafe connector?

  • How to Safely Remove Hardware under Hyper-V 2008 R2?

    Hi,
I'm using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, but it seems that there is broader experience/support with Server Core, so I'll try this question here.
There's no GUI, so how do I Safely Remove Hardware, e.g. a USB-attached external backup drive? I'm looking for a command-line tool to list removable drives, let me specify what to remove, and tell me when it's safe to remove it.
Also, how do I configure the drive properties (either safe removal or turn on write caching)?
    Thanks,

  • Windows 7 64bit Safely Remove Hardware Icon takes too long

With XP it takes 2 seconds to remove a jump drive with Safely Remove Hardware
But, on my Windows 7 pro 64 bit running a i3 Core-330M(2.13GHz) with 4GB RAM, it takesaround 30 seconds.
    Here is what happens:
#1: I get an hour glass for 7 seconds that goes away.
#2: Nothing happens. There is no feedback that anything is is still happening under the covers.
#3: After another 27 seconds the list of removable drives appears, and I can remove the drive.
I am resigned to just living with this, since it is not worth any effort to fix.
But, I would like to know if this is normal behavior.
If this is abnormal, perhaps my new Lenovo EDGE 14 may have some hardware problems?
Thanks ind advance for any light on how to solve this.
    Regards

  • Main hard drive listed as a "Safely Remove Hardware" device?

how do I get rid of the icon (in the system tray) ....and what would have if I "removed" the device.  This is my primary hard drive that is being listed.

It is possible that you never unplug this hardware. So how do you get rid of the icon? As far as I know the only way is to right-click the notification area, and selecting Properties. Under the Notification area heading, click Customize. Find the Safely Remove Hardware icon and select Always hide in the Behavior column next to it (press OK and Apply to back out).
Is this the only thing we can do to "hide" it??? Hide the systray icon?? It will be there by just clicking the round button with the little white arrow, actually it is there already (hidden) as I already did this since I installed windows.
Also in my case I do have 3 external Firewire/USB devices (2 HDD's 1 CD-RW) and I need to remove them by clicking the safe removal thing, right next to my RAID-0 HDD's...

  • Ok...I was a bad kid...*safely remove hardware*

Im a little too desperate to fish through the whole site,
but anyhow, i disconnected when it said not too.
i mean- im sure people have done it before? apple should know idiots like me exist.
"Safely Remove Hardware" froze so i tried to restart (I should have shut down) and disconnect then, but anyhow, i forked it up, and havent been able to reset, restore, or pretty much do anything. do i have to visit the ipod store???
i get the folder(!) screen and then click whurrr! haha
    suggestions?
    constructive critisicm appreciated,

ah! i figured that out a little bit ago!!!
    new, very stupid-of-me problem though
when i was in the "safely remove hardware" menu yesterday, trying to shut up my ipod, i went to it's properties and switched it to disabled, and now i cant seem to find a way to enable it again!
this being said, my comp wont recognize it to do the update -_-

  • Charging after Safely Remove Hardware

    Hi,
I have just noticed that after I "safely remove hardware" ipod simple does not charge anymore. In order to charge it mus be showing the message "Do no disconnect". Was it supposed to happen? I know that in mac, even if you eject it, stills charging. Does it happen with you? What should I do?
    Thanks in advance.

That happens to me too. If I eject it from iTunes but not from Windows then it continues charging. But when I eject it from WIndows the charging stops.
I also have a usb wall charger that will not charge my 5G ipod but charges my daughter's nano just fine. The 5G's display lights up when I plug it into the charger, so it knows it is there, it just won't charge from it.
Apple must have used some inscrutable, zen-like yin-yang logic in designing the 5G charging circuits. Or they just f**ked up. By the way, I installed the 1.1 update and the charging stayed the same.

  • External display stays after removing adapter.

    Hi!
After having my MacBook connected to my TV earlier this week (via the Mini-DVI->TV-out adapter) the computer won't stop recognizing the TV display.
When I unplug the adapter the screen on my MacBook flickers as if it is searching for displays and then returns to the same state that it had before unplugging the device (except there is no external display plugged in anymore). I have tried almost everything I can come up with, restarting the computer both with and without Mini-DVI-adapters, resetting SMC and P-RAM, connecting various external displays and disconnecting them again and so on. The only thing that remains (that I can come to think of) is to reinstall OS X, which is kind of the last resort for me since I have a lot of things to backup.
I think it might have something to do with the 10.5.4-update since it occured the first time using an external display after updating. Are there any ways to downgrade my system or do you have any better idea of what my problem is? Please help me!
I have a MacBook Core Duo 1.83 GHz (the first version) with Mac OS X 10.5.4 installed.

Yes, that's exactly my problem. It's kind of disturbing when you use spaces and they show you a much larger desktop than there really is, especially since it has been working for more than 1,5 years.
I just hoped someone knew some kind of fix that would solve my problem, anyone?

  • External displays and projectors

I've been having problems getting my MacbookAir (Mid 2012) running OSX 10.8.2 to use external displays and video projectors via VGA and DVI adapters.
The problem is that if I am connected to my external monitor and disconnect the magsafe power adapter, the displays (both the external monitor and the macbook builtin display) instantly go black/shut off.  If I close the macbook lid and open it, the displays come back momentarily but then switch off again.
If I connect a video projector via VGA while running on battery power only the displays come on momentarily and then switch off / go black/blank. Opening and closing the lid causes the displays to come on momentarily but they quickly go black/shut off again.
I found a work around for this as follows:
    - I had my displays set such that the external display was to be the "main" display (the display with the menu bar at the top and dock at the bottom)
    - I changed the settings so that the bultin display of the macbook was always the "main" display (using the system preferences option for displays and dragging the menu bar over onto the icon for the macbook builtin display)
    - With it set so the macbook's builtin display is always the "main" display it will now connect to external displays with and without the magsafe power adapter being connected- problem solved.
I think there is a bug here and it should be fixed.

Lukewarm13 I think you should start your own post with that question! personally I think you have a faulty unit.
Did some more testing. My wifes laptop will connect to the projector when using a different (short) vga lead and works fine. Then I can switch to the long cable and it still works fine! BUT if I restart the computer it again fails to work with the long cable until I have used the short lead first. weird!!!!
My laptop works fine first time with either cable!
