T410s fan / overheating

I've had my current t410s for nearly a year. (Before that, I had another t410s and prior Lenovo models for 3-4 years.)
Just recently, the fan has started playing up. Now the fan is always on when the laptop is plugged in, even if the computer is completely idle. And it's constantly making a soft but very noticeable (and annoying) high-pitched whining sound. Also, a couple of days ago the fan started powering itself up to max speed and slowing down again every few seconds, like someone revving a car engine before a drag race. I noticed that the back left corner of the laptop was incredibly hot. I powered off, waited a while and started back up, but the computer froze on start-up.
Any idea what the problem is likely to be, and how it might be fixed? Fan issues seem to be a perennial problem for Lenovo, and I see third parties have even created software to try to solve Lenovo's issues! I'm still under warranty but I've read stories of people losing their laptop to Lenovo for days only to have it returned without the fan problem solved.

Does the whine sound like this?

If it does, well, see what they'll do for you in terms of motherboard replacement.
Also, do you live in a particularly dusty environment? Regardless, I'd check to see if that fan has a lot of dust in it- if it does, canned air will solve that problem.

  • T410S Integrated Overheating

When I run anything CPU intensive (eg, Skype, Matlab etc), my  T410s (integrated graphics) appears to be overheating and crashing.
It gets very hot and then the screen goes black and it turns off. See the attached chart of heat, 90C seems far too high:
    http://img191.imageshack.us/i/speedfanreadings.png/
Any suggestions on what I should do? I just updated the bios, but it doesn't seem to have changed anything.
FWIW I just reinstalled onto an OCZ Vertex and I'm using Windows 7 x64 drivers not Lenovo drivers. Overheating didn't seem to be a problem before the reinstall, using the same setup but with a normal hard disk.

The Power Management driver is absolutely essential. Windows installs a slightly older driver anyway by default I believe.
Try taking off the keyboard and cleaning out the fan. If that doesn't work, tighten the screws on the heatsink.
Power Manager works fine for me on my T400, as does the switchable driver except for the Intel GPU issue; works perfectly fine elsewhere. Power Manager just launches slowly.
Lenovo's Intel wireless drivers seem to be just repackaged Intel drivers with some fluff removed.
    Mind posting your machine type?

  • T410s Fan Error on Boot but works sometime...really confused

Hi, I bought the t410s back in 2010 april or march. About 7-8 month later, I started getting Fan Error on boot after the thinkpad screen. If I don't do anything, the computer shuts off automatically, but if I hit escape, it would continue boot and start up (without a working fan).  I know that there are other threads about the fan error but none of them mentioned this. Most of the times after it continue booting after escape on fan error, I would do a cold reboot and the Fan Error would be gone. So Im guessing that the hardware is fine because if they faulty, then it shouldn't work at all. So recently, I did a clean install of windows 7 and updated all drivers and bios. After update, it was working for like 4 days so I thought it was just a software issue but now the problem have returned, same as before. Sometimes it boot with fan error, sometime no error. And after shows fan error, if I escape and reboot, most of the time the error would be gone. Anyone know why this is or what is going on here? Anything would be appreciated, thanks.

    hey dy58,
since it is hard to replicate this issue as sometimes it does happen and sometimes it does not, i do recommend bringing the unit to an authorize service center for them to investigate.
do contact the tech support team for information of the nearest service center

  • Laptop shutting down? Fan overheating?

    Hi all.
I have read many topics on this forum about the fan on any laptop not working, the laptop overheating or the laptop seemingly randomly shutting down.
I have had this problem for about three months. I tried propping up the laptop so the fan (stupidly positioned on the middle of the base of the laptop!!) could get air. It didn't shut down, but it was ridiculous having to prop my laptop up everywhere I went, and fan was also ridiculously loud.
I took my laptop to a doctor and it turns out there was a fault with the chip on the motherboard that controls the fan. This caused the fan not to work properly, causing overheating, and the laptop shutting down.
I got it fixed and my laptop is now nice and quiet and I don't have to prop it up and it doesn't shut down.
Sorry if this is bad news! Hope you can get your laptops fixed!!

Bad news. Anyway thanks for the info.

  • Loud fan / overheating G5 - can anyone help?

Hi - My iMac was fine until I used Toast. After burning a couple of discs very quickly it kept turning itself off. I looked at the log, and it had been overheating. I haven't tried burning any more discs, but the machine is now very noisy, even when just turned on. It also turned itself off when I tried to ftp some files from one of my websites.
I got the iStat widget, and these are the readings:
    HD 38
    CPU 80
    GPU 42
    GPU ambiant 47
incoming air 30 (the temperature in the room is 18 degrees centigrade)
    mem.controller 71
mem. controler 59 (two of these)
    Fans: rpm
    optiical drive 1384
    CPU 3600
    HD 1626
I was given a link for instructions to reset the smu:
    resset smu http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
First time I tried it the computer turned itself straight off again after being turned on. I tried agtain, and it is on after 20 minutes, but still noisy. The figure for the CPU using iStat is still 3600 although the other figures have gone down a little.
Can anyone tell me what is the next step?

The G5 iMacs have had problems with the capacitors and the power supply, but since you have the iSight, it's no easy matter to open. I suggest you take it in to Apple and have them open it and check the caps on the logic board and the power supply. If the logic board needs replacing, it can be quite expensive and you'll have to decide whether it's economically justified.
Please let us know what happens,

  • MBPRD 15" - Dead Pixels, Loud Fan, Overheating...

    "Hello there!
Have been a devout user of your products since my early years! Never had an issue (dodgy disc drive here and there, but nothing to write home about!)
Last year I purchased my first PRO product, in the form of the brand spanking new Retina Display 15" Macbook Pro. Was delighted when it arrived FCPX (I even followed you there no questions asked, unlike much of the film industry) would render faster than I could work, the new version of OSX was flawless. I was as happy as could be, especially appreciating viewing my videos in high quality for the first time in edit!
I am currently travelling around the world, mac in bag seeing all the sights, I am not putting my macbook through copious amounts of work, some browsing here, a film there, a dabble of iPhoto, no biggie for a machine of this cal ire right? WRONG!
    1) The noises this new fantastical fan designed to be more efficient and less noisy make are terrifying! It sometimes sounds as if it is about to blow up!
    2) Overheating - it burns to rest my hand on the palmrest sometimes.
    3) Overheating part 2 - I often get alerts that the internals are overheating operating sometimes at well over 90 degrees
    4) Overheating part 3 - The one that prompted me to write this message, I just burnt my hand on the magsafe charger, not a wimpy burn a, "holy jesus Batman! I have a blister on my hand from my magsafe" burn!
    5) Slowing down - Sure I understand this happens from time to time, but less than a year after i bought my new top op the range mac!
    6) Dead Pixels - Boy oh Boy! isn't that retina display glorious! 5 million pixels all to myself! HD filmmaking and photography has never been so fun! except for about 100 of them are now dead, and ever increasing every day!
Now that is it on the technical faults for today, onto the customer service! I have tried to talk to an apple representative about these issues; why the worlds leading technology supplier does not have an email is beyond me! Why can i go into store or talk to somebody on the phone! Why not email said person on the phone? or have a live chat function? This does not bother me too much and has not ever been an issue with me as i usually am in London.
The fact of the matter now though is I am in Malaysia, by the time I am home the warranty is expired (I am afraid at this point it will be a case of "sorry bro can't help you, we have just released the new MBPRD though want to buy one") I have tried countless emails to random emails found online, even Tim Cooks apparent email address (although I know that was a long shot). I have also tried going into stores in Asia, granted there is a language barrier but it seems as though they are not interested in helping, I am also not in one particular area long enough to be able to get a repair service if need be (I assume it takes at least one week).
So this is my last hope, after all my failed emails, store visits. What should i do?! This machine is so close to being great! But has so many faults, most of which actually conflict with my work!
    A reply would be nice!
    Thanks
    James Davey"
Thanks for any help anybody can offer!

Sorry, only other users here and your problem appears to be a hardware issue we can't resolve.

  • T410s fan

I got my T410s last week. The brand new machine is perfect except for the fan noise. The fan continue running never stop no matter what battery model I select. The fan make more noise than my old T40. What's the problem?

I've just finished one more experiment. Switched the ssd on machines... It turns out that ssd from quiet unit hasn't changed behavior of loud one. It's not the system/win7 issue. It's BIOS (but units have same rev.). Maybe some fault during assembly?
LENOVO can you hear me? What's wrong with your quality checks. Why the units vary between one another. This is 2000 EUR/pcs. hardware!
they only a run brief diagnostic on the system to make sure there is no hardware error, but i don't think they check noises as such. Just call in Lenovo and ask them to change the fan/heatsink unit.

  • T410 fan is killing me

I just bought a new T410-A28 machine, however, a terrible problem is the fan, everytime I start the system, the fan is runing with a speed of about 3800 rpm, and also never stopping running at all....
Particularly at night, the fan noise is so amazing...
shall I always try to use tpfancontrol for this? any other good resolutions?

Try rmclock utility to lower the voltage of the procesor, its really helpfull.

  • T410 - fan noise whilst battery is charging

    Hello everyone,
I own a T410 for about a month now and still have fan noise problems. They only appear when I charge the battery. The fan speeds up and get annoyingly loud just after I plug it in. It's like the cpu is running 100%, but it is not! When the battery is charged or I pull the plug the fan gets silent again.
Also the notebook does not get hot. Everything seems normal, except for the noise.
Is there a solution to this problem? I would be very happy because it's very annoying when I am at University.
It is a T410 with Nvidia Optimus. Preloaded OS. Newest power manager and nvidia drivers.
    Thank you,
    semjorka

    @semjorka,
Welcome to Lenovo forums, could you try updating your BIOS and see if it helps (do ensure reboot first before flashing the BIOS). Also update all your software using ThinkVantage System Update and Windows Update as well.

  • Fan/overheating issue with my macbook

Hi all. My MacBook is shutting off from overheating. The fan is not currently working, but sometimes it does, though if the MacBook is moved or tilted it tends to disable it. I am running smcFanControl and it says 0 rpm's. The normal temp now is between 185-210 degrees F. At around 220, when streaming video, playing a DVD, or watching a movie it shuts off. I called apple a few weeks ago about the problem and their solution was to ship it to Texas. Their box has still not yet arrived. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

    jlkst87 wrote:
"Back up your data now" Done regularly.
"use your MacBook as little as possible" Not helpful. So I should just put it on the shelf unless I need the calculator or the currency converter?
"If you know your Mac is just going to overheat and shut down if you do certain things, stop doing those things!" I bought a MacBook in order to do those things.
Thanks for the time you took to try to answer my questions.
The problem is, though, your fan is faulty, so your processor will overheat when you try to do processor intensive things such as watching movies. The computer is designed to shut down in the event it overheats, to protect it from serious damage. Based on the information you gave, the computer is behaving as it should.
Apple wants you to ship your machine to Texas for repairs; if the box has not yet arrived and you think it's taking longer than it should, contact Apple to find out what the situation is.
In the mean time, you should keep the usage of the computer light, or you will overheat the processor and cause the machine to shut down. So, yes, that means no games, video, etc. There's nothing you can do about this short of having the issue repaired. If you keep overheating the processor you may run the risk of doing serious permanent damage to your computer.

  • Having trouble with kernal_task, fan, overheating, and lag issues with my Macbook Pro. What should I do?

I've had this problem with my Macbook Pro for the past few months. I am starting to become increasing dissatisfied with this product since it's less than even a year old and going through so many problems. I've taken at least 10 trips to the Apple Genius Bar in the past year.
    I've had issues with
    1) erratic trackpad
    2) wifi connection timeouts
    3) kernal_task taking up 300% of my CPU, my fan become crazy and just having my laptop lag to the point where I can't even use it.
I sent in my laptop for repairs last week again and they replaced my logic board and some other things. I recieved my laptop back yesterday, but I'm finding the same exact problem is happening again this morning. I still have warranty and set up another appointment for a few days... but the amount of trips I've taken is really starting to irritate me and my problem still isn't solved. What should I do? Is there another way to solve this or should I just keep going back to Genius Bar...
I regret buying this laptop. =\ It was so expensive but yet has so many problems. I've never had to deal with anything this cumbersome with my past few laptops.

If you've taken it back for the same problems over and over again, I suggest that you start asking for a replacement. Ensure that you've backed everything up to an ext HD and removed your personal data and information. IIRC, repeating problems warrant a replacement.

  • IMac G5 Garbled Screen / Loud Fan / Overheating

When I try to start up my iMac G5 (pre iSight), I get the usual chime, and when the screen starts up, I get a surprise every time. Completely garbled, sometimes it looks like fog, other times like garbled information, other times like an old, badly tuned TV.
Then the fan kicks in really loudly.
I put a brand new hard drive and OS 10.5 in there a few months ago, and the machine seemed to be running fine.
    Any ideas??

Your video chip seems to be failing, see if you can boot from your install disc and run Apple Hardware Test to check things out. After that, you can run Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot from your internal drive and repair permissions.
however, it does sound as if your graphics chip has failed. Unfortunately, they are soldered to the logic board, which has to be replaced to solve your problem.

  • RMBP Fan/Overheating Issue?

I have a brand now rMBP and I have a question.
Should the fans be coming on more often than previous MBPs?  Normally, the fans are not audible.  But, even if I play something like Angry Birds the fan start to become audible.
Is there anyone else playing Angry Birds that can verify this?  I thought it strange that a simple game like this with invoke greater fans speeds (at the point to become audible).
