T410s Fn Ctrl Key Caps?

First of all, kudos to Lenovo for implementing the Fn-Ctrl swap in the BIOS.  I have an X100e and a T410s, works great on both.
On my X100e, the physical key caps were the same size, so it was easy to switch the physical Fn and Ctrl keys.  However, on the T410s, the key caps are different sizes (Fn smaller than Ctrl), so they can't be directly swapped.  Is there any way to get key caps in the opposite sizes (smaller Ctrl, larger Fn)?
Thanks in advance...
(Aside:  why can't Fn+C ALSO be copy, etc?  It currently doesn't do anything else....would solve all of this nonsense in the first place....but I digress)

Um...what?
Are you saying, "I don't think that you can get key caps for Fn and Ctrl of the right size such that they can be replaced after performing the BIOS Fn-Ctrl swap?"
If that is true...anyone have any other ideas?  Maybe there's a way to get the labels/stickers?

  • T410s: hitting ctrl key hangs some 32bit apps under Windows 7 64bit

    Hi,
Can anyone help me figure out the issue? I use a T410s with Windows 7 64bit, 2G memory. When I hit the "ctrl" key with IE32bit, MS messenger or outlook2010, it makes those applications hang. If I use IE64bit, it does not have the issue. I am not sure if it is a memory problem (it looks it is not) or it is a software/hardware conflict issue.

    Did you upgrade from 32bit?
Did you swap the Fn keys with the Ctrl keys? If you did, you might want to go back to BIOS and swap it back. Or you can do a BIOS reset to be sure.

I need to reprogram the delete and enter key to the left side of a external keyboard for the ipad mini. I don't need the caps/lock or ctrl key. Due to a brain injury my daughter can only use her left hand to type. She also uses a text to speech app to verbalize all of her needs since her speech isn't intelligible any longer either. And her vision was significantly affected also, so the keyboard has to be mounted about 6 inches from her face. So to reach across the keyboard with her left hand to the right side delete and enter button is physically difficult and causes typing errors, which cause people to not understand what shes trying to say.
The best keyboard so far is the Zagg folio mini. I just had to make stickers to enlarge the letters on the key buttons.
Does anyone know how I can reprogram these two keys? Or where I can buy a wireless mini keyboard for Ipad made for lefthanders with these two functions on the left side. I have searched for days and days. It's sooooo important to me that she be able to contribute her voice again. Imagine if you got in a car accident and couldn't speak clearly any longer, but understood everything still. Thanks for any help and suggestions you all take the time to share with me. I really appreciate the kindness of strangers to help me help my daughter.

Hi, Chris. I don't know of any. If there were a way, I'm sure it would require that all the keys be working properly, which yours aren't. You've got crossed wires somewhere, and you're going to need a replacement keyboard.

  • Need new key-caps for Thinkpad T61 wide-screen.

There seem to be lots of types of key-caps. How do I tell which one I need. I did try to find it on line, but its too confusing.. There's a lot of info and a lot of videos. Once I GET the key caps I can watch the video to see how to replace (or get desparate and go to geek Squad.

Welcome to the forum! Are you trying to just replace a few keys or the entire keyboard? The video will walk you through replacing the keyboard but not individual keys.

No, there's no method to swap the functions of the Fn and Ctrl keys.

  • T410 both CRTL keys not working

    Hello All,
This is driving me nuts.  All of the sudden the CTRL keys (both left and right) do not work on my T410.  I thought it was a virus (I had a torjan) so I wiped the HD and did a clean install of Win7 pro 32 bit.  Problem persists.
I can attach an USB keyboard and the CTRL keys work on USB keyboard.  I can go into BIOS and toggle FN and CTRL keys, then the FN key works as a CTRL key just fine, but the CTRL do not as FN.
I have two kids age 5 and 9 and they might have messed with something.  Any suggestions are appreciated.  I cannot find the solutions.  I find it very strange that both right and left CTRL keys would mechanically fail at the same time.
    Cheers,
    Mike - Toronto Canada

    @maxillo,
Try alt + ctrl + fn and see if it helps.

Also try going to "Ease of access center" then "make keyboard easier to use" then see if any "sticky keys" or other modes are turned on.

  • Pressing "Ctrl" key stop my VI

    Hi all,
My VI stop responding when I press any special key. Try running my VI attached in this post. While the VI is running, press any arrow key, and you may find that the value of the indicator "Horizontal position" and "Vertical position" changes accordingly. However, once a special character key is press, such as the "Ctrl" key or "Caps Lock" key, the VI stop responding. Anyone can tell me how to avoid this?
    Thanks..
    Best regards,

  • CTRL keys broken.

I have seen reoccuring problems with laptop owners, struggling with the CTRL key on various occasions. Now, my CTRL keys both cease to work, and it was an abrupt occurance, and did not happpen after I had restarted my laptop. It was immediate, and completely unexpected. I am unable to work without the CTRL keys, being that I use various art and editorial programs, and that I am also a student who desperately requires that key to shorten the time in which I work on something. I had googled how to fix it, and used a handful of different solutions, but to no avail. I tried to search for drivers, but it did not list a keyboard driver update, or said that there was an "error" in obtaining it through a manual attempt. I've tried to uninstall the driver, reduce the amount of start up programs that may have affected it, manually went through the files, refreshed my laptop, and in the end, RESTARTED my laptop. NOTHING has helped, and I am severely stressed, aggrivated, and anxious to have this problem resolved. I need it fixed ASAP, please. I need as much help as I can get.  I appreciate the time that you have taken to read this, and PLEASE get back to me as soon as you can.

    Hello Joosters,
Go to System Preferences—>Keyboard & Mouse.
    Click on the Keyboard tab.
Click on the Modifier Keys button.
In the sheet that drops down, click on the Caps Lock key: popup menu and select ^ Control instead.
Now use Caps Lock instead of Control until your new keyboard arrives. You'll just have to hold the shift down if you want to type strings of caps.

  • Ctrl key is not working

ok I recently bought a used laptop and threw arch linux on it and eventually got everything working correctly. However the ctrl button does not work which each means I can't run awesome commands like ctrl+c and ctrl+d. The best way I have found so far to work around this problem is to use stty to bind commands to some other key. For example stty "somekey" erase. I would like to map the ctrl key to the alt key or possibly the windows/power key.
How would I look up the symbols for alt and windows/power so that I can use alt or windows/power as ctrl?

    Mr.Elendig wrote:I would rebind caps-lock to ctrl.
thats cool, I actually found out how to do that in virtual console. I simply switched the keyboard layout to emacs. I'm still having problems changing the keyboard layout in xfce though.
RADIO EDIT:I actually found out how to change the keys in X using Xmodmap. I think I write a wiki article about this...

  • Tecra M10 - Stuck CTRL key issue -- perhaps to do with BIOS?

    Hello and thanks for reading.
I recently switched my Tecra M10 to Windows 7 (from XP) and it soon developed the dreaded "stuck CTRL key" issue. This causes the keyboard to behave as if the CTRL key is permanently depressed. Sometimes hitting a combination of keys, or bringing up the onscreen keyboard, temporarily solves the issue, but then it returns.
It seems to be an issue many people have, with no simple solution. I've looked at every thread about it I can find, and tried many things to do with drivers etc. without any success.
So firstly, if anyone knows a remedy that works for this particular machine, I would be very grateful to learn it!
Then, there are two things I've not yet done: update BIOS and disable pinch zoom.
I was looking at the following BIOS update:
    http://www.toshiba-asia.com/sg/support/drivers/details/25244
... which is version 3.00 and seems to be most recent. My own version is 1.90.
However version 3.00 is labelled "For PTMB0* ONLY". I don't know what this means or whether it applies to me. Can anyone help? Should I install this BIOS?
For the pinch zoom, I've been told that disabling it does sometimes cure the CTRL problem -- but I can't find any pinch zoom facility on the M10. I suspect it simply doesn't have one. Is that right?
Many thanks for any help you can give.

    Hi
    > I was looking at the following BIOS update. which is version 3.00 and seems to be most recent. My own version is 1.90.
There are different Tecra M10 models on the market.
Check the labels at the bottom of the unit. There you should find some numbers like for example PTMB0E-01K00LGR
The first 6 characters are important: for example PTMB0E
I assume your notebook belongs to European series.
In such case you should check the Toshiba EU driver page for possible BIOS update.
    http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
However, on Toshiba EU driver page you will find also the BIOS v3.0 for all European Tecra M10 units.
Anyway, back to the CTRL button issue: guess what, you should connect an external USB keyboard and should check how the CTRL button acts.
In case the USB keyboard would work properly, the CTRL button of internal keyboard is affected and you will need to replace the internal keyboard.
PS: it could be possible that the option "sticky keys" has been enabled. To disable this function, you have to press SHIFT button 5 times in the row.

  • Ctrl key not working on Macbook Pro running Windows 7

    Hi
Recently I took my Macbook to the Apple store to have the top case replaced because there was a problem with the trackpad. Since getting it back, the ctrl key doesn't work when I boot into Windows 7. Anybody got any solutions? I have tried fn + ctrl as well.

Try install the newest Intel® HD Graphics Driver.

It includes the Intel displayaudio driver and some people solve the audio problem on Windows 8 after install this driver.
Rember backup first before test the driver.

  • Is there a way to swap the Fn key and left Ctrl key

Is there a way to swap the functions of Fn key and left Ctrl key on the keyboard. I'm used to other keyboards where the keys are switched and I keep pressing Fn when I want to press Ctrl.  I figure I'll get used to it eventually, but when I use the laptop in a docking station with a regular keyboard the control key is in one spot and undocked with the Lenovo keyboard the function key is there instead, which makes it hard to get used to.
If not is there a way to disable the Fn + Space bar function that changes the screen resolution. The programs I use use control + space heavily and my screen resolution keeps changing when I don't want it to.
It's a small thing I know, but very maddening.

Thanks, I took the survey. It's interesting the questions on there were asking about location of keys like page up and page down. I find the position of those keys are not that important to me because I don't use them that much and don't seem to mind looking at the keyboard to find them. Also they are almost always in different spots depending on whether you are on a desktop or laptop keyboard so I guess I'm used to unconsciously switching depending on which keyboard I'm on.
But the left control key is one of the most heavily used, at least by developers like me (control+c to copy, control+v to paste, and control+space for code assist, shift + control + f to format code, shift + control + r to find resources, etc...). I have to hit that Ctrl button 1000 times a day. And the key is in the bottom far left corner on every keyboard (desk top and laptop) I've ever seen until now. Having to remember to look down at the keyboard to find the key is proving difficult and I think is actually hurting my productivity. Especially control+space (when you are expecting a popup to automatically complete the line of code you're working on and instead the screen blinks, resizes and your whole editor loses focus it really breaks your flow of thought, so thanks a million for helping me turn off the silly screen zoom feature).
Hopefully I'll get used to it like with the other keys like page up and page down although I've had the laptop for two weeks and it's proving difficult. If I had know that Thinkpads have this layout and how maddening it would be to get used to it I probably wouldn't have bought it, even though everything else about it is great. It's amazing how such a small thing can become such an irritant.
Well thanks again, and if anybody from Lenovo engineering is reading this post, my vote is for some bios setting on the T61P that swaps the functions of Fn and Left control key. It would save me a lot of grief anyway.

  • Windows thinking Ctrl key is stuck on Satellite P750

Yes, I've done some thorough googling and searching of this forum before posting.  No prior topic quite resembles my problem; and the solutions don't help.  Sticky keys box in the Control Panel is unchecked, not using any aides--the computer is brand new with barely anything installed and zero customization.
Using my Satellite P750 (purchased just in October 2011), every once in a while after simply using Firefox or Chrome (either one)--using nothing but the mouse pad and the left mouse button--the size of the font of the text in the browser randomly increases, and after that the computer starts thinking the Ctrl key is being held down.  (Ctrl +Alt + Del does nothing, only rebooting the machine).  I realize that I'm inadvertently toggling some function, but what?  Looking around Control Panel, nothing seems to be close to "if user moves curser, increase font size and make the Ctrl key stuck".
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
