T410S Integrated Overheating

When I run anything CPU intensive (eg, Skype, Matlab etc), my  T410s (integrated graphics) appears to be overheating and crashing.
It gets very hot and then the screen goes black and it turns off. See the attached chart of heat, 90C seems far too high:
http://img191.imageshack.us/i/speedfanreadings.png/
Any suggestions on what I should do? I just updated the bios, but it doesn't seem to have changed anything.
FWIW I just reinstalled onto an OCZ Vertex and I'm using Windows 7 x64 drivers not Lenovo drivers. Overheating didn't seem to be a problem before the reinstall, using the same setup but with a normal hard disk.

The Power Management driver is absolutely essential. Windows installs a slightly older driver anyway by default I believe.
Try taking off the keyboard and cleaning out the fan. If that doesn't work, tighten the screws on the heatsink.
Power Manager works fine for me on my T400, as does the switchable driver except for the Intel GPU issue; works perfectly fine elsewhere. Power Manager just launches slowly.
Lenovo's Intel wireless drivers seem to be just repackaged Intel drivers with some fluff removed.
Mind posting your machine type?

  • T410s (integrated) overheat and shutdown

Is that just me or someone else has this problem too? I know it's a known problem for T410s with discrete graphics but mine has only integrated graphics and it still suffers from overheat. It normally happens while playing games. Sudden shutdown without notice.

Yep, getting about three to four unexpected shutdowns per day if in a graphics intensive game -- heat seems excessive from the vents. There is a thread on T410s unexpected shutdowns. I'll seek and link..

  • T410s fan / overheating

I've had my current t410s for nearly a year. (Before that, I had another t410s and prior Lenovo models for 3-4 years.)
Just recently, the fan has started playing up. Now the fan is always on when the laptop is plugged in, even if the computer is completely idle. And it's constantly making a soft but very noticeable (and annoying) high-pitched whining sound. Also, a couple of days ago the fan started powering itself up to max speed and slowing down again every few seconds, like someone revving a car engine before a drag race. I noticed that the back left corner of the laptop was incredibly hot. I powered off, waited a while and started back up, but the computer froze on start-up.
Any idea what the problem is likely to be, and how it might be fixed? Fan issues seem to be a perennial problem for Lenovo, and I see third parties have even created software to try to solve Lenovo's issues! I'm still under warranty but I've read stories of people losing their laptop to Lenovo for days only to have it returned without the fan problem solved.

Does the whine sound like this?

If it does, well, see what they'll do for you in terms of motherboard replacement.
Also, do you live in a particularly dusty environment? Regardless, I'd check to see if that fan has a lot of dust in it- if it does, canned air will solve that problem.

  • T410 Integrated Camera Quit Working?

    Hi,
My integrated camera recently quit working. The green light comes on but it's just a grey image where it would normally display what the camera is seeing.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks

  • T410 integrated graphics problem

    Dear all,
I bougt a T410 laptop two month ago. But there is always a graphics problem. When I use it to watch video (720P) or play games (DOTA), the video always lags, and is not fluency. I have set the lowest resolution (about 600, color is 16) when I play games. I also updated the drivers for BIOS and graphics. I even restored the system, and then updated drivers. These did not work.
The parameters of my laptop are as following:
    Intel Core i5-520M Processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3, 1066MHz FSB
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 32
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 5700MHD - AMT
    4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
I think the laptop should be good enough to watch 720P videos and play low resolution games (DOTA).
Is there any other potential problems that can cause such problems? Many thanks.

  • T410 Dual monitor support with integrated graphics

I am considering purchasing a T410 with integrated graphics, but I need to make sure it will support dual digital displays (with a dock of course).  I use a T500 for work, and when I switch to the integrated chip, I am unable to use dual monitors.
Can someone confirm that the T410 (integrated graphics) can use dual digital displays with a dock?

Should work. That NEC is 1920x1080 which is suported on the single-link DVI. DP can handle even more. The dock has both DVI and DP. Your ThinkPad supports the 2 monitor outs. My understanding is the ThinkPad LCD would need to be off when you do this; the specs on the dock mention max 2 monitors simultaneously.

  • T410 with integrated graphics - DVI output not working on Mini Dock 3 (4337)

I tried connecting my external monitor to the DVI output of the Mini Dock and it did not work.  I have since connected it with no issus to the VGA output.
However, I want to use the digital (DVI) connection for my monitor........how can i fix this issue?
NOTE: I have a T410 with the integrated graphics so my laptop screen does not display while docked (I keep the lid closed).

    Hi MarkinIt,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with no Display when connected to docking station on your ThinkPad T410.
Have you checked updating the Intel graphic driver from Lenovo support site?
Please provide the current Graphic driver version showing in device manager.
Is the system having Windows 7 or Windows 8 OS?
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • T410 i3, integrated graphics, 1080p playback

    Hey guys,
Sorry if this seems to be a topic that pops up over and over on the internet. I've been digging around a lot and have failed to find any definite answers to this question. It seems like some review sites are saying that the T410 has no problem with 1080p playback but doesn't specify the exact specifications for the machines tested for video playback. There is also a guy on youtube who posted a video review of 720p and 1080p playback from a T410 i3 integrated and says that video playback was fine for 720 but choppy for 1080; however, when peopel recommended coreAVC, no response was given.
Can anyone here give me their experience with 1080p playback with integrated graphics on a T410?
And also another quick question, I'm aware that the displayport to hdmi will carry audio as well, but for the video, does it carry the raw HD content, or is it scaled down.
    Thanks very much indeed!

    1. The T410 with i3 CPU runs the 1080p playback fine, whether or not it is choppy depends on the quality of the encoding and what player is used. The integrated GPU is designed for hardware decoding of the 1080p videos in Blu-ray.
    2. The displayport will carry the specific video size that you specify in the windows. It can support WQXGA resolution. But if you specify the output to 1920 x 1080 then it would do so at that resolution.

  • T410: From Graphics: Intel GMA HD Integrated Graphics to Graphics: NVIDIA NVS 3100M with 256MB DDR3

Hi, I have a Thinkpad T410. I bought it with integrated graphics card. Now i want to upgrade to the other one: Graphics: NVIDIA NVS 3100M with 256MB DDR3. Is that possible? thanks a lot

You'd have to replace the motherboard.
A better solution would probably be to get an eGPU; it's way way way faster.

  • Any resolution to nVidia GPU overheating/stuttering issues on T410s?

I've been digging around the forums and have seen a lot of old posts with people having similar symptoms: switchable graphics (nVidia part) overheating and causing stuttering problems, crashes, freezes, etc. under heavy load. I talked to tech support a while ago and they seemed to be unaware of the issue.
    Anyone know of a solution?

  • T410 overheating and turning off

Hi, My T410 is getting overheated and switching off suddenly on its own since yesterday. The battery life also seems to have decreased all of a sudden. Please help. My notebook is not even a year old yet. ThanksDebanjan

Well it gets to 104 °C fairly often.  I cleaned the hair out that was clogging the fan, and put it back together, but it was overheating even sooner, not running for more than a few minutes at no load before reaching 104 °C and shutting down.  The thermal grease applied by Lenovo looked dried out and crusty, as well as there being way too much smeared all over everything:
    Link to picture
So I figured it wasn't making good contact anymore.  I took it all apart and cleaned off the paste as best I could, and replaced it with a thin layer of Arctic Silver 5:

It runs a lot longer now, but can still reach 104 °C and overheat under heavy load.  I'm hoping this improves during the "break-in period" of the thermal paste.  If not, I don't know what to do.
But I can't deal with my computer shutting down and losing my work all the time, and I haven't found a program that can force the fan to 100% all the time.  I found that setting Maximum CPU Speed to Low in Power Manager keeps the temperature below 65 °C, so I'll do that for now.  It's just a workaround, though, not a solution obviously.
tripplec wrote:That's one reason I tend to stay away from small especially if I want a CPU that can boogie.
A well-designed system shouldn't have any problem running at maximum CPU.  This one didn't have any problems boogying until a few weeks ago.

These laptops WERE considered to be mission critical laptop.  IBM built it that way and Lenovo failed to live up to it.
Yeah, this is exactly the problem.  I should have just bought another Dell.  I spent extra on the Thinkpad because I thought it would avoid problems like this.

  • Lenovo T410 - issue with i5 520M integrated graphics

    Hi,
I recently installed Arch on a Lenovo T410. Following the guides in various wikis (Archwiki, ThinkWiki) I was able to configure everything without too much troubles...
But I have the feeling that the the integrated graphics chipset is not perfectly handled. I get this feeling when I run glxgears:
    $ glxgears

    298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.490 FPS

Any ideas or suggestions will be welcome, also I would like to know if there are any relevant resources on the internet concerning integrated chipsets and the implementation status of the linux drivers.
    Thanks,

If your hardware is bleeding edge it's very likely to not yet be fully supported. In the case of Clarkdale/Arrandale i believe support is added in 2.6.33.
I suppose you could find that information by searching the forum for clarkdale, by browsing http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux26Changes or asking in irc / forums / usenet. But tbh i can't find much information about Clarkdale either.
For comparison though, i have ~800 fps on my Thinkpad X200s and 1100 fps on my i3-530 machine (Clarkdale) with kernel 2.6.32.10. Kernel 2.6.33.2-1 (testing repository) gives me ~800 - 900 fps.

  • T410s Switchable Graphics Driver Update - When ?

Any chance of the T410s getting an update to its switchable graphics driver which was last updated
    8.16.11.9223/1.0.15.0
    15 Nov 2010
For a machine that is still being sold, albeit with Optimus now instead of the switchable unit that Im guessing someone in Lenovo figured out was mega faulty with overheating etc.
Even so, whilst I wait for a solution to get this laptop swapped out, be nice if we got some new drivers for it.
I know this is a community forum, so this is not a direct ask to Lenovo staff, I'm just putting it out there for other users to either agree with or disagree with.

    Bump,
now it's nearly 1 year ago that the Switchable driver was updated. The Optmus driver on the download site is almost new but cannot be used for the switchable models (why that?).
So please Lenovo, I received my new machine 1 week ago and the only complaint so far is the graphics driver (and at least power consumption on battery with integrated graphics).

  • T410 or T530

    Hi
    I have a T410 under warranty
Due to performance and overheating issues that came up recently, the seller sugested to replace the machine to either sam T410 ot T530 with no cost.
This is manily a development laptop so the most imporatnt thing for me is smooth strong machine that can run simultaneously  Visual Studio / Eclipse, VMWare macine, browser with app. 10 tabs opened, outlook, music palyed from the web, plus some other application(s) that might run on the background.
The T410 I have, handled that pretty well until problem had begun, but the question is whether it is worthy to upgrade to the t530.
I understand that the T530 s a newer model but is it really better?
What are the main differences except for the screen size, which makes the T530 heavier?
    T410 spec:
    Core i5 520M
    8G RAM,
    Integrated intel graphics
    T503 Spec:
    Core i5 32100M
    8G RAM,
    Integrated intel graphics HW4000
    tx
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

what makes it heavier, well the screen is larger and the whole case is larger, so that takes up the weight increase.
The i5-3210m is about 2 to 3 times faster than the i5-520m.
Also, you can upgrade the T530 to have a i7 Quad Core if you so wish. Then there is option of FHD LCD. Finally, the T530 can take 16 gigs of ram (2 x 8 gigs), and the hdd is SATAIII, you can also get a mSATA put in.

  • T410s Optimus game performance / heat

    Hello, I have a 2 year old T410s.
I'm  trying to play the Diablo 3 beta.  However, after a couple minutes of in-game action the game slows down to a crawl.
I have Thinkpad Fan Control running at fan state 80 (6000+ RPMs) and even so the temperature is reaching the low 90 degrees C.
I know there have been overheating issues with the T410s.  Have these ever been fixed?  Do I need to contact warranty support for assistance?
    Thanks

Well I'm playing a game that should run on Intel HD graphics.  I've had similar problems with SC2 which was an older game as well
And the temperature thing has come up while doing things such as watching netflix videos.  I'm assuming that temperatures hot enough to nearly boil water aren't a commonplace sort of thing
I'm not playing Crysis or anything.  You would think a $2k (at the time) computer would have some ability to use its graphics chip, no?
