T410s - Recovering Dead HDD

My T410s which had shutdown quite normally and didn't give any indication of problems died suddenly with a blue screen of death. I tried rebooting in different safe modes, The disk is cold dead and inaccessible even as a slave drive on another computer. My tech support person said he tried to "freeze" (as is low temperature) the HDD in the hope that it might jiggle the platters back to action. Didn't work either.
Any suggestions on recovering files from the disk since I have some files that I really need?
My tech support says that since data is encrypted, even a data recovery service will be unable to read the files. But I wonder whether such folks couldn't do a bit-level copy to another disk which I can then read off as a slave drive?

  • IBook G4 Dead HDD and No OS?

Hey guys thanks for checking out this post and helping me out, so long story short I've got a iBook G4, ( Last model Apple made (14 inch, 1.4 GHz) ) and I got it with a dead HDD and since the HDD was dead there is no OS in it. Im aware that you can buy Leopard or Tiger at eBay or Amazon but for a big price tag, and the HDD is a pain to get to in the iBooks, I changed a HDD in a 2008 Macbook and it was so easy compared to this. So the question I really have is that where can i buy leopard really cheap or if i took it to a local computer repair shop how much would you think they'd charge me for a HDD repair + Leopard installation? I know the G4 is basically obselete but I always loved the White Computers Apple made so I'd love to restore it.
    Thanks, JP.

Not sure what else may be a repair on the unit should the symptom be caused by a failed connection on the logic board or a solder joint on either a CPU or GPU module. Companies who specialize can do this kind of re-solder repair, some are better set to do this on a regular basis and have modern facilities to re-solder boards.
I see where wegenermedia.com says they can do these, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Certified dead hdd: should i try the freezer trick?

my hdd died a couple days back and i sent it in to apple.
they certified that it's dead and it'll cost upwards of 1000 bucks to recover the data, which i'm not able to afford.
i've read about the freezer trick and am thinking of giving it a try.
but the thing is i am under applecare and apple is able to replace the hdd for free; but i'll be unable to get my old hdd back. (stupid policy) so if i get them to replace the hdd for me i lose any chance of recovering my data.
if i choose not to get a replacement hdd, i can try the freezer trick but i'll have to buy a new hdd on my own and do the replacement. and also voiding my applecare in the process.
what do you guys think? has the freezer trick ever worked for your macpro hdd? i've googled but haven't found much info pertaining specifically to mac hdds.

Either would be fine to use. FireWire (especially FireWire 800) is faster; USB is cheaper.
You can either buy a bare-drive adapter cable like this...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
...or an inexpensive drive enclosure like this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/ES2.5BPU2S/
Or you can spend more and get a high-quality FireWire enclosure. I recently bought this one and am very pleased with it:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MSTG9438U2OB/
To my knowledge, there are no bare-drive cable adapters that connect to the computer via FireWire. I've never seen one offered, and I don't know why not.
An enclosure would be a considerably better choice if you intend, after trying to recover your files, to buy another bare hard drive on which to back up your new internal drive, after mounting it in the enclosure. Frankly, you're nuts if you don't intend to do this after your current tribulations.

  • Mac SE FDHD with dead HDD - boot and run from floppy drive alone? HDD type?

    Hello!
I picked up a Mac SE FDHD a few months back - a model with a Superdrive and hard drive, as well as 4 MB of RAM. It came with a keyboard and mouse, but no floppies of any kind. Upon testing, I discovered that the hard drive did not work - the "flashing question mark folder" appears at startup, and the disk setup utility on the system 6 install disks I created using a more modern mac can't detect it. I don't hear HDD seek sounds either. Everything else works fine, as far as I can tell. The reason I want to use this old Mac is simply to boot it up and run a few favorite old programs (such as MacPaint and many old games), so I don't want to put too much money into it.
I discovered my parents still owned a old, 170 MB "LaCie Tsunami" SCSI external drive, used with our long-failed Mac II, and decided to use as the SE's boot drive, as a cheap workaround to avoid buying a "new" drive. However, after a rather odd turn of events (described below for information purposes), it turns out that the 50-pin SCSI drive itself functions, but in the process, I think I killed the enclosure. Unless this drive can replace the internal drive of the SE, (or get lucky and find a compatible drive somewhere), I'll need to run the SE from its single floppy drive.
I figure that since the original Mac had 128k of memory, a single 800k floppy, and no hard drive, and yet can still run OS 7, the SE should be able to run system 6 from floppies somehow. The question is how? Is there a tutorial online somewhere on how to set this up?
Furthermore, as far as the hard drive is concerned, is the SE's internal drive a standard 50 pin SCSI HDD, and thus likely compatible with the one from the LaCie?
Thanks for any suggestions, and for helping this "Old time Mac Newbie" out!
    -Dan
PS: What happened to the LaCie drive - for information purposes:
WHen I attached to the LaCie drive to the SE and booted the OS 6 install disks, t worked - OS 6 installed to it just fine. However, it turns out that a "dormant" copy of Norton utilities reactivated when I booted to the SCSI drive, and encrypted the disk's partition table. (Why it was not encrypted BEFORE installing and booting OS 6, I don't know) Having not used the drive for 17 years , and thus not knowing the password, I had to reformat it. I have a Sawtooth G4 with an Apple SCSI card - but no cable that would go from the PCI card's SCSI port to the external enclosure. THus, I removed the drive from the enclosure, mounted it in the G4 internally, and formatted it as Mac OS Standard (with OS 9 drivers) using Mac OS 10.3. Upon re-installing the drive in its SCSI enclosure, I found that it no longer works - Norton was erased, but the SE gives me a "Sad Mac" icon upon boot. Furthermore, after borrowing the correct SCSI cable, I found the enclosure now kernel panics my G4 when attached. The drive itself, when mounted internally in the G4, still functions perfectly. Thus, it seems that either the enclosure is dead, or something about OS X's reformat is renders the HDD incompatible with the enclosure...

"I removed the drive from the enclosure, mounted it in the G4 internally, and formatted it as Mac OS Standard (with OS 9 drivers) using Mac OS 10.3."
I just re-checked Disk Utility's format options under Panther and only see "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" or "Mac OS Extended." I don't see an option for formatting Mac OS Standard. Are you certain that you formatted the drive as a Mac OS Standard (HFS) volume? If it's a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume, that would explain why it won't work when connected to the SE. When using external SCSI enclosures having a hard drive or optical drive, I always opted to connect an "active" SCSI terminator to the unused SCSI port on the enclosure. It seemed to provide stability, because I never had a problem with any of them. Does the LaCie enclosure have a built-in termination switch or do you plug in a terminator to the opposite SCSI port on the back? As for installing/using the 170 MB hard drive in the SE, it must have a jumper installed on its TE pins, if it's the last device connected to the SE's SCSI ribbon cable. Additionally, the HDD must have a unique SCSI address, The factory default is usually 0, which doesn't necessarily require a jumper. If another address is desired, a jumper or two installed across specific pins will accomplish that. If the LaCie enclosure had a switchable SCSI address button on the back (you change it by pressing in with a ball point pen), there were small wires from it that were connected to the drive's address pins in a specific way. Did you disconnect/re-connect these when you re-installed the drive in the enclosure? Also, if the enclosure has a termination switch, did you re-connect its wires to the drive's TE pins?

hi guys, do you know why i can't open my files pictures videos and docs after i recovered with the help of "recover my data" from my frozen hdd

If you "recovered" your hard drive using the built in partition, I'm sorry to say, your files are gone.

  • Worst case scenario: Dead HDD, no backup. What can I do?

    Hello,
So today was not a good day. My Macbook's HDD just upped and died, for no apparent reason. It was working as normal, shut down, it hangs, I restart, and I see a "?" and if I put my ear very close to the Macbook, I can hear faint clicking repeatedly. I took it to the Apple store and my nightmare was confirmed.
Here's the thing: they won't get the replacement HDD until Wednesday, and they offered to attempt to get the data off my old HDD for $150. I said no, thinking I had made backup DVD+R's at home. Turns out, I really didn't
At this point, I would indeed have them try to salvage my data for $150, but the HDD is sitting here right next to me, and if I shake it I can hear something rattling around. I have memories of a broken spindle arm of a iPod. I'm thinking that this is not salvageable.
What do you guys think? I have until Wednesday, as they told me once the new HDD comes in, I have to give them the old one back. Can Apple indeed do it? What if they can't? Anyone else?
    Thanks much.

Hi, sorry to hear about your problem. There are several ways you can try and recover your files. One way is to purchase a utility like DataRescue 2 that may be able to recover your information. The other is like was said before, have apple or someone else try and do it for you at a high price. One way that you may not have heard or tried (its very old) is to remove the hard drive from the macbook and put it in ziplock bag (make sure its well sealed) and then put the bag in you freezer for a while. Then remove the bag, and reinstall your hard drive, restart and try to copy the data from it to another hard disk. Here is a link to research this in google: http://www.google.com/search?q=harddisk+infreezer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
    Anyway good luck,and regards

  • Recover dead tracks from ipod

recently my music HD got slightly corrupted and i lost afew tracks (533) so they'er comming up as dead tracks in itunes. my ipod is synced up to date so all thoes missing tracks are on the ipod, are there any tools that can recover the dead tracks from the ipod to fix my itunes database, its a horrific task doing it manually, cheers guys

The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

The transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • Recovering damaged HDD of CE507

    Hi,
We have a CE507 (version 2.x). Someone has tried to install Linux in the past over the CE507 SCSI drive. Looks like he succeeded. The issue is how to recover the situation back, so I can install the ACNS software on it.
    1. Should I format the HDD and what kind of filesystem to put?
    2. How to install the loader?

    Hi,
indeed I have an older version of the CE507, and the situation is a bit different.
My CE BIOS version shows: BIOS Version:
    "CE500 01.11"
    And here is what happens:
ress any key to stop auto-boot...

    [CE500 Series]: ?
    ? - print this list
@ - boot (load and go)
    p - print boot params
    c - change boot params
    e - print fatal exception
n netif - print network interface device address
    $dev(0,procnum)host:/file h=# e=# b=# g=# u=usr [pw=passwd] f=#
    tn=targetname s=script o=other
boot device: flash file name: /ata0/vxWorks
    Boot flags:
0x02 - load local system symbols
    0x04 - don't autoboot
0x08 - quick autoboot (no countdown)
    0x20 - disable login security
0x40 - use bootp to get boot parameters
0x80 - use tftp to get boot image
    0x100 - use proxy arp
I am changing the boot params for the CE507 to configure the ethernet interface and take its rescue image from a ftp server, but no luck:
    . [CE500 Series]: @
    boot device (flash,net) [ net]:
    file name [ tl.rescue.dmdsysimg]:
    cache IP address [ 10.0.0.155]:

    server IP address [ 10.0.0.147]:

    Loading from the network
    Attaching network interface fei0... done.
    Attaching network interface lo0... done.
    Loading...
Error loading file: errno = 0xd0003.
The location is pretty correct, because via ethereal I see how the CE507 grabs the file from the ftp server.
I have tried to let the CE507 load many files,
    but no luck.

  • T410S clone old HDD to new SSD failed at the last moment, any suggestion

I just purchased a samsung 840 250GB SSD and want to replace my current 250GB Toshiba HDD in my T410s.
I used the Samsung Data Migration Software to clone the old disk to the SSD. However, everytime it came to 99% completion, it pop out the message "The target disk disconnected -0001 [0xffffffff]" and then the cloning failed. It seems all the docs in C: was copied so I tried to boot from the SSD but it said "missing boost mgr". So does any one know what happend? How can I clone my old disk to the SSD and use the SSD to boost the system? I don't want to reinstall anything.
    Many thanks!

Is the Recovery Partition a problem or the System_Drv Partition cause the problem?

  • Replacing 1 dead HDD in Array of a proliant ml350 sever

    hello,

Yes but performance could suffer slightly. If it is a larger size, it will only use the amount of disk space equal to the others in the array, the rest of the space will be unusable.
It is always best to use a drive of the same model in the array if you can.

  • Recovering from HDD crash - Netboot Images

    Howdy's,
Essentially, I have a G4 (866mhz) Quicksilver tower as a server here. Its an older machine but does its job. Until such time as I started to lose the HDD.
All of the LDAP/WGM configs I've been able to recreate. No problem there.
However, /Library/Netboot/NetbootSP0 has a few Netboot images that are used for imaging here.
Because of the HDD starting to fail, I've had to recreate the server. I would have expected that just copying from the original drives, to a share, and then back again would have it work.
    Not so.
When copying back and starting the NetBoot service, it's picked up the images, and the configs (joy!) that were their previously.
However, if I try to Netboot a G3, G4 or Intel (which all worked 3 weeks ago) they crash during the boot process. The crash is pretty random and basically results in a corrupted screen display.
Given that one of the images has had about 3 years worth of development in it that has ZERO documentation about it.. I'd like to recover, not reproduce
Where should I be looking for more information? Does anyone have any guides/howto's I should be looking at?
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Somewhat solved.
I have no idea why this failed originally, but... I didn't have enough space on any Mac machine to copy (scp/cp/finder copy and paste) the images to when the machine was still running.
    So I copied them to a Win2k3R2 SMB/CIFS share.
That seems to have been the problem.
Got hold of a Firewire caddy, pulled the data off the old drive (after 10 attempts, that's one sick drive and tried again. Success.
There must be some meta-data or the like associated with the files themselves that caused this.
Even with HIGH logging on the Netboot server, there is no difference in the previous logs to the current one. The current attempts just boot..

  • Boot usb dont work to recover dead bios on lenovo t500

cant recover my dead bios on t500.too bad im in zimbabwe there is no ibm lenovo companies for help.i jus get back to use my dinosaur desktop.

I'll start by asking if you get the Thinkpad image on the screen when you power on the system?
USB functions are provided by the BIOS, without a functional BIOS, there is no functional USB.   In the case of BIOS corruption where the machine becomes unusable there is little answer other then finding an Lenovo repair center.  However before I considered it dead I would try resetting the CMOS and see if that helps,  The HMM http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6630_04.pdf will show you how to take the unit apart to gain access to the battery, it is located under the keyboard.  Make sure you have the AC, and battery removed when you do this.  Best of luck, hopefully you don't have a completely dead system.

  • How to recover my hdd

So my macbook pro late2010 crashed last week and I took it to the apple store on 5th ave.
Turns out the logic board was damaged so they sent it out for it to be fix.
I didnt get a chance to backup my macbook cause it wouldnt start. So I lost all my files data ect.
They replaced the logic board and wiped the macbook but...They kept the same hdd
Is there any way I can recover the files since its the same hdd ??

I've used Data Rescue 3 with good results - but, as far as I know, it won't be able to completely recover your apps, system files, etc. It works best on data files.
If you want to attempt to completely recover the entire disk, I don't know of a way that you can do it yourself - I don't even know that a forensics data recovery center could do that: if you're in NYC, you can always Google and find a forensics data recovery lab and ask them if they would be able to 'completely' recover a drive but I'm betting that the answer will be "no."
But it's worth looking it up and phoning, I suppose - it may be quite expensive.

  • Qosmio F50 - How to recover from hdd?

    Hello,
I got a very big problem.
I made some changes with my Vista regs and then I was unable to start it up again.
So, I started recovery program (second HDD), backed-up my files and selected whole HDD recovery.
Well, now problem - everything looked fine, but when I got into Vista set-up I had to shut the computer down.
Now, when I start the pc and load Vista I get message that I should reinstall my computer again.
Well, but they say nothing about how to load recovery file, because I get no option to do that - only Emergency mode, Emergency with network support, etc. but no recovery. By the way, when I select Emergency mode, I cannot load Vista either - it says that I have to run configuration in normal mode, which says to re-install. Yep, -_- circle.
    Model: Qosmio F50
Do u think that when I delete whole Vista disk manually - e.g. with linux and then start the computer up, I get option to load second part of the disk to start installation?
Thanks in advance since I am really despair

There has NEVER been an option to use F8 (or when am I supposed to push F8?). I could always enter recovery mode ONLY when Windows did not load successfully (in the past I could not start emergency mode). I guess I do not have to order it since I started ubuntu, and copied entier HDDRecovery folder onto my external drive, so I guess I gotta buy DVD which has ~6GB and burn content of the folder (not folder itself?). and then it will boot from the DVD? (like windows when u install it).
By the way, I guess there is no way to start recovery from ext. hdd (yea a silly bios).
I know I should back it up myself, but Toshiba could give one cd with the notebook. However, it is probably their policy. How many people burn recovery? well, they need to make some money ....
If you have any other recommandations, please let me know :)
