T42 boot-up problem

I get the following error messages when booting up my T42, 2378R4U:
User Interface Failure
The Logon User Interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load.
Contact your sys admin to replace the DLL, or restore the original DLL.
Also, the following error message:
svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0xffbadd11" referenced memory at "0xffbadd11". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Can you please help me? OS is Win XP Professional.

Hi cptjaskirk,
Isn't it the third time you're posting about HDD problems? Could there something on the system board that's causing this? I mean coincidence can happen once or twice, but 3 times is excessive, not impossible but bewildering for certain.

Beige G3 boot from **** problem; open firmware issues; bad motherboard?

Dear all,
I'm having huge boot/startup problems with my beige G3 that had been happily running OSX 10.3.9, but for purposes of this discussion we can (mostly) revert to OS 9. Originally, the machine was a G3 @300; was upgraded more than a year ago to a ZIF G4 @500.
To make a long story short, it won't boot from any hard drives, will not boot from any OS X CD, and will only occasionally boot from a 9.x startup CD (whether Apple or Norton Utilities). I think it's an open firmware issue, possibly caused by a bad motherboard (rev. 2).
All this started happening after I used techtool pro, but I think that's coincidence (even though I acknowledge that, for cops and computer users, there are no coincidences.) Also, as discussed below, I'm having the same problems with an HD that wasn't even in the computer when all these things began.
Here are some of the things I've done.
--repeatedly reset PRAM, both with key combinations and removing battery. The only time it will boot from a 9.x CD is after resetting PRAM.
--removed all add-on PCI cards.
--removed additional VRAM
--removed all memory cards and tried replacing one at a time.
--disconnected both existing hard drives and replaced with an older OS 9.x hard drive (approx 60 mb) that I'd used before. Also tried different ribbon cables.
--unplugged floppy drive
--disconnected PCI ATA disk controller that I'd been using for running a large (1.8 gb) hard drive.
--regarding open firmware: readenv usually shows totally normal default AND installed settings. Using reset-all works fine -- at least it makes the machine reboot, but doesn't solve the problem. reset-nvram does NOT work -- says it's an "unknown word."
--using startup keys like holding down the option key, or shift key, or X key or cmd-option plus two others I can't remember, has no effect. Again, after I've tried any kind of reboot, the ONLY way to get the C-key at startup to boot the CD is by resetting the pram (key combination). Otherwise, the usual result of these experiments is a dark screen on startup -- nothing at all (and the LCD monitor tells me "no input.")
--regarding OSX: sometimes (and I emphasize sometimes) I can get the machine to start booting from an OSX 10.2 CD, but it won't complete the process. Sometimes I get a "prohibited" (as in no-parking, no-smoking) icon; sometimes it will start booting (grey screen, OS X Apple icon), then crash (horizontal grey and white jagged bars); sometimes it will show the OS 9 start icon (the tiny smiling Mac SE), but not boot at all.
--when I get the mac successfully booted with an OS 9.x CD (again, this works sometimes, but not always), the old hard drive with two partitions does show on the desktop and can be accessed. Using either disk repair or Norton Utilities shows the 9.2 system partition on the hard drive to be fine. But if I go to the startup disk control panel, confidently set the 9.2 partition as my startup disk, then reboot, there's no change. It won't boot and I'm back at square one.
--even when I do get successfully booted with 9.x, the machine will still occasionally crash for no reason -- ie when I'm moving a Window.
--the only thing I haven't done is slowed down the processor. It's a ZIF G4 bought more than a year ago from XLR8 your Mac. I'm running at the default 500 mhz, and it's never given me any trouble.
So I think it's a bad motherboard or ROM. Thoughts?

The beige Mac is now operating happily again. My original tentative diagnosis remains the same (although still tentative): corrupted PRAM from bad battery, compounded by bad cables that wrote corrupted data to hard drives, and also (possibly) allowing Tech Tool Pro (a utility that I now regard with deep suspicion) to create a "virtual" startup partition.
A few things I've learned along the way that hopefully may be useful:
--remember that the Ex Post Facto utility can be used to help OS X startup, not just installation. This applies to hard drives, emergency CDs, installation CDs, etc. If you can boot into any working hard drive partition (OS 9 or a backup OS 10), then run Ex Post Facto (same program runs on either OS 9 or X -- don't ask me how) and tell it what system you want to start up from. Also, the utility has sometimes told me that the startup extensions on the disc that I wanted to boot up from were bad, and offered to fix them (which works).
--at least on my Mac (beige, v. 2 motherboard), resetting the CUDA button, resetting the PRAM, resetting Open Firmware and "draining" the memory by unplugging the computer and disconnecting the battery for several hours ALL DO DIFFERENT THINGS.
Specifically, if I'm having trouble booting (from a hard drive or a CD), the FIRST thing I do is restart and resetting the PRAM on the fly -- holding down command, option, P and R at startup, and waiting for the chimes (preferably at least 3-4 times).
If I do that and DON'T hear the chimes, that's my cue for my SECOND action -- restarting into open firmware (command, option O and F keys on startup). That should bring up the black text on white background open firmware screen. View other posts or apple support for details, but if you do PRINTENV and see a bunch of weird gibberish after the default/installed lists, you know that it was messed up and you need to clear it through reset nvram and reset all commands. Be aware some of these commands do or do not work depending upon what version of Open Firmware you have.
After I've rebooted with Open Firmware, then on restart I should be able to reset the PRAM on the fly. If that works, then either let the machine run and see what happens, or hold down the C command and see if it will boot from the CD
Usually, if I've fixed everything as above, the machine will boot into whatever version of OS 9 it finds on a hard drive. That's fine with me -- at that point, use Ex Post Facto to reboot into your OS X. (Before I forget: I used the shareware startup CD creator program BootCD to make an emergency boot CD based on OS 10.2.8 (which theoretically will support a beige mac in native fashion) and Disk Warrior, the god of disk repair utilities. Even though the CD should boot just by holding down the C key on startup, it doesn't -- but if I use Ex Post Facto to boot it, no problems (although the process is very slow -- be patient). Then I can fix almost anything using Disk Warrior.)
If none of the above works, then I'll try resetting the CUDA (on my beige minitower, it's a very small black button inconveniently located between a PCI slot and the side of the computer housing). Hold it down for 15 seconds. That should REALLY clear the PRAM. I know this does something different from the previous steps because this is the only action (except the battery disconnect -- next) that clears the date and time from the memory.
If all else fails, I will unplug the computer and disconnect the battery, then push the CUDA button for 15 seconds and let the machine sit overnight.
One final finding -- I thought I'd fixed everything, but both my hard drives suddenly quit working, I discovered that during all this repeated connect/disconnect of things, one of the male pins inside one of the connectors on my Acard ATA PCI card had broken off. Not good. Fortunately, the card had a second connector, which works fine. And I did some extensive shaking of the computer to make sure (I hope) that the broken pin hadn't landed on a circuit board.
All this took more than two weeks, and the advice of this board was much appreciated. Now I'm on to my next adventure -- trying to figure out why a combo Firewire/USB PCI card won't mount an external drive on Firewire, but will on USB. I've tried two cards with same result -- but a Firewire-only card works just fine.)

3 yr old macbook pro boot up problems

Hi, I bought a 13” macbook pro 3 yrs ago.. Its running the latest version of Lion.
I have a boot up problem.
Initially the boot up sound will go off and get stuck on a white screen.
I’ve left it on for 30mins….it took me to a disk disk utility screen…
I’ve clicked on repair disk….after about 15mins
Its saids
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
Invalid B-tree node size
The volume could not be verified completely
Then I restart….now… not only does it get suck on the white screen, but the boot up sound keeps repeating
Im currently living in Hong Kong, what should I do now, and if it requires repairs…how much would It cost.

I don't know what happened. It is not a common occurrence. It can be caused by power outages, abnormal shutdowns, software glitches, etc.
I would think seriously about a backup strategy for the future:
Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
Synk Pro
Tri-Backup

Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Boot Camp problem + General partitioning

First, the Boot Camp problem
I don't know exactly how to explain, but I kind of made the partition and restored them into one single startup disk, for several times. It was OK for the first few times, but then it required me to run Disk Utility (from startup) to repair the disk before I can partition. It happened for one time. But after that, it started to ask me to back up the hard disk, format it, and restore it, then try Boot Camp again. So, the ending of the story is I can never do boot camp again now because I wouldn't waste at least 70 quid for a hard disk large enough to back up solely because I need to run Boot Camp. Is there anybody here know why this is happening? And, eventually I think I'd have to buy an external drive and back up, format, restore, then run Boot Camp. But doesn't it sound dumb and familiar? This is exactly the ONE AND ONLY way to fix any problems in a PC. Aren't macs supposed to be far better than PCs? Why do we have to do what PC users have to painfully do? I hope somebody here can come up with a solution that doesn't involve "backup>format>restore".
Second, the partitioning,
I came up with an idea to solve the above problem. But I don't know whether it actually works, so I'm seeking for advice. I was hoping if I run Disk Utility from start up, make two partitions (or more) for the mac HD, one HD being the one holding all the data, and the remaining being empty. Then I can format the empty one (which seems rather redundant), and do the Boot Camp thing on this partition. However, there are two points I have doubts with. One, if I split my current single mac HD into multiples of partitions, will any or even all my data be lost? Because I can only specify how much to partition, I wouldn't have the chance to "tell" the computer to keep all existing data on one partition. Two, I know that Boot Camp can run on an external HD, so is it possiible to run on a different partition?

Hi....
Had alarm set for this morn,turned phone off last night,(as I,ve done many times).Alarm went off...silenced alarm,ok.Then I got an option of "Do you want to turn phone on"?...I hit yes...and thats my problem.
Have read thru all the posts regarding boot-up problems...all to no avail...
Have tried a full reset but can,t turn the phone off..all I,m getting is a Blank White screen.
I have,nt downloaded anything recently and currently have the firmware up-dated to the latest..(51.1)
Have taken the battery out,also...but again to no avail...

I have removed memory card but theres still nothing happening...
Since my topic starter,Ihad the battery out...just replaced it...done a hard reset...and now it has booted up...
Next step is to swap all my contacts from Sim to Phone....
While re-booting it took longer than before to boot...but at least its on.......don,t know what the prob was....will keep you up-dated if it goes again..
Will chech for up-dates etc....in the mean-time..

After the bios post screen, when the xp logo disappered, it's freese 2-3 minutes. XP starts normally and full functionally after the freese. I have no stability problem.
I have install XPSP2 ( SP2 embedded XP cd. Created autostremer) Install all latest drivers and bios update (1.B0)
I've use only one hdd, no raid array. I've try the bios settings optimized. Guided like this documents FAQ

Check eventviewer for drivers/sw thats fails to load .
Other than that most boot delay problems are related to bad IDE (master/slave) configuration or cables .

Boot up problem (AGAIN!!)

I had a boot up problem with my MBP just about one month ago. I took it into the Apple store and they replaced the graphics card. Everything worked just fine until this morning. I went to turn my MBP on. I didn't hear the chime and it went to the gray screen with the apple and the spinner at the bottom. Not even 90seconds later it turns black. I tried to refresh the PRAM but it doesn't even recognize that I'm doing that.
I'm just going to take it back up to the Apple store once again but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas in the meantime.

Try booting it from the Apple Install/Restore DVD that came with the Laptop (insert CD, and hold C key while booting.) If that doesn't result in booting the installer I am afraid there is little else you can do - just take it back to Apple store and listen to what they've to say - they may give you a replacement since this would be the 2nd time it is failing or at least repair it once more. Good luck.

Boot up problems...

Hey fellas..
Lately I've been having strange boot-up problems with my system. On initial start-up, windows would go through its' POST, then it would just hang. If I press the RESET button it would boot-up normally from there without a problem.
The only 'hardware' I've added so far was another stick of 256DDR ram. But I made sure it was the same brand and speed. I'm almost certain this is what's causing the initial lock-up, but my question is why would the system start-up normally after a RESET?
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You may have reached the max limit of your PSU. It's recommended to have a min of 200 watts combined on 3.3v and 5.0v with a GF4 card. Some people don't have probs with less, but the more hareware you run the more power you need.

Boot up problems into Vista via Bootcamp after changing monitor (to Formac)

I am running Windows Vista Business 32 bit via bootcamp on Leopard 10.5.1 on a Mac Pro with 3Gb RAM and with the two systems installed on separate 250Mb hard drives. My GPU is an ATI 1900 512Mb card
Up until now I have used an LG 1920P 19" LCD monitor with this setup, which has been recognised perfectly well by both Leopard and Vista.
I purchased a Formac Gallery 1900 19" LCD in the January sales and now have that connected as main monitor. This works fine with Leopard however Vista has issues. Starting up with the alt key option, I get the MacOS/Windows disk choices come up as usual and select 'Windows' to get Vista, but then the screen goes black and into 'sleep' mode (pulsing front light). After a little time and some disk activity, the computer reboots itself into Leopard. Next time I do start Windows successfully it reports an unsuccessful startup last time.
I tried booting into Vista with the old LG monitor then hot-swapping DVI cables with the Formac, and the Formac is then driven perfectly well in Vista as a plug and play monitor (same as for the LG)
However if I connect both monitors, I can boot into Vista on the new Formac monitor (even if the LG is actually unplugged from the power socket but just connected to the DVI).
I'm very puzzled by this, quite enjoying dual monitors, but I'd still like to be able to boot to Vista using just the single Formac monitor alone. As it seems to be a 'boot-time' problem I suspect the problem may lie with Bootcamp. I tried installing the ATI Catalyst Control Centre in Vista and configuring displays there but it did not help.
Does anyone have any advice please ?

Bad cable? using same port on the X1900?
Display preferences on a SAFE BOOT and make sure that Vista knows about the new monitor? It can have trouble forgetting one and learning about the new monitor, which is "main" and which is "extended desktop" mode.
There have been problems with displays. Might want to look in the Mac Pro: Displays discussion, and bring it up there with other Mac Pro owners.

T42 booting problem

I have two Thinkpads and I lent my old T42 to my nephew for a couple of months. He returned it to me this week saying it no longer boots. I have a set of Recovery Discs (Discs 1 - 6) which came with a separate CD titled: IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore. I put this in and booted and went through the entire routine from it to Recovery Disc 6 without anyproblem. However, now, regardless what I do, Windows XP will not start; a reboot will bring me back into the Rescue and Restore routine (even with no CD in the tray); then the machine reboots on its own back into the R&R routine, then reboots on its own to the R&R, etc. ad infinitum. Continually pressing or holding F8 does nothing to stop the routine.
I am almost 70 and not the sharpest tool in the shed and would really appreciate if anyone give me a hint or two into solving this problem. Having the machine serviced professionally at today's charges would cost more than a new Lenovo.

Hi TonyVella, welcome to the forum,
please try the following; shut the system down and then start it again. When you see the BIOS splash screen with the message "to interrupt normal......." please press the blue Acces IBM button or F11 and enter the recovery mode, select to recover the system to factory state.
On some older systems the recovery was a two step proceedure; create the recovery partition from discs and then recover the system from the newly created partition.

Boot message: problem with hard drive detected. Slow loading of windows 7

I am having a problem with my hard drive, everytime it boots these days it starts with a message: Warning: a problem with the hard drive has been detected, followed by an extremely slow loading of windows. then once in windows it gives me Anothet message
the messsage says hard drive failure imminent you should back up you data etc.
My specs are:
Intel core 2 duo e8400 3.0 ghz
4 gig ddr3 transcend
1 tb seagate 7200.12
giga byte nvidia 9800 gt 1 gig ddr3
Please help lots of data.

Another option:
Take your hard drive out and slave it into another KNOWN WORKING PC.
Back-up your data immediately. Slow boot usually indicates that the drive is going to die. (Check your warranty!)
Then, run "chkdsk /r" from the host PC to check the failing drive. (It is good to match OSes if you can.)

Solaric boot up problem after poweroff

Hi Everybody,
I have a solaris 10 8/07 installation on X86. I have problem regarding boot up after power off. Its not booting in multiuser mode and hangs up at the blue screen. Could we do something in the single user mode to rectify the problem, because its possible to boot in single user mode?

Please include your full model number when posting problems on the forums. It can be found on the bottom of your laptop.
If it's now working perfectly, then I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. However, I can say that it's best to do a system recovery with the exact media designed for your notebook and then upgrade if you wish.

HP Touchsmart 23 520-1180a boot up problems

Hello.
I have an HP touch smart 23 AIO desktop.
I am having issues with what I suspect is the HDD.
I think it is the HDD as the original 1TB hdd drive with windows 7 installed would freeze up at random (during boot or general use).
It would also not let me install windows 8(it wouldnt get past the setting up screen).
I then decided to put in another 500gb HDD out of an old media player I had.
It worked, I could install windows 8 and no random freezing until tonight.
After not using the PC for about a week I turned it on and it showed a boot error "No boot device detected".
I have since re started it and it booted in to windows only to freeze up again.
Before the freeze I managed to open task manager to check the performance, I seen that it was using 100% of the HDD.
as it is still a fresh installation of windows I have very few processes running.
I dont know if it is a HDD or a fault on the motherboard.
I ran a diagnostic test from the BIOS, the cpu passed so did the ram but the HDD failed, the error was that the HDD was not connected.
I did hear the HDD working through.
Also after the test ran the PC froze again, so I restarted and ran the bios again the same results showed up, I then restarted again and it started to load windows then froze again.
I then moved a 2 TB HDD from another All in one PC to the troubled PC and it froze up almost right after turning the PC on.
I then popped the 500gig HDD from the troubled PC in to the other PC and it booted straight into windows with no problem.
There is a SATA cable from the HDD to the MoBo, I took the one from the working pc and put it in the troubled pc just to rule out the cable, it still failed the HDD test and froze.
So I plugged the HDD cable into the CDROM SATA input and restarted, although it would still get boot error the HDD would pass diagnostics test but would not boot windows it would just go into recovery but still with random freezing.
I Tried to Boot Herin's boot disk but it froze.
Just seems to be freezing randomly now, I just dont know what to do it what it could be anymore.
UPDATE: I have just turned the computer on 3 time and ran diagnostics 3 times and everytime the HDD pass BUT everytime the pc froze.
Also I tried to reinstall windows and yes yet again it froze.

I have read your post on how your HDD boots with an error, passes all the tests, and I would be happy to assist you!
The first step I recommend is to follow this document on Restoring the BIOS. This should help how your computer will boot from the HDD. In addition, I also suggest replacing the SATA cable connecting your HDD to your motherboard. To do this, please follow this document on How to Remove SATA cable.

Is apple going to fix the boot camp problem in yosemite?

I was told to wait on my install because of loss of data problems with boot camp and Yosemite? Is apple working on this problem or do I just have to forget ever updating to Yosemite? Just kidding they probably are looking at all the time. Thanks for your time.

If you have not made any disk partition changes or resized windows or used OSX Disk Utility after Windows was installed, you are in a relatively safer position. I would highly recommend backups of both OSX and Windows with the ability to rollback, before you attempt the upgrade.

Boot Sector problems upgrading to WIndows 7 on T61

I'm trying to upgrade my T61 (bought in Canada with Windows Vista) to Windows 7. However, the installation aborts partway through, with the message "Windows cannot write to the boot sector". The most common solutions that I have found online do not work - there doesn't seem to be any problem with my registry - and it appears that the boot sector has become corrupted, although I cannot notice any problem with normal operation.
One solution I have found to this problem is to use the Windows Vista installation disk to "repair" the boot sector. However, my T61 didn't come with Vista disks, just the Lenovo R&R package. I haven't found a way to repair the boot sector this way.
Without some help I don't think I'll be able to perform the upgrade.

Fixed my own problem. The Windows 7 installation disk was able to repair the boot sector. All I needed to do was boot from the Windows 7 disks and follow the instructions for "repair" operating system.
