T42 problems

Beginning to get frustrated with this laptop now, shame as to start with it was brilliant and I recommended it to everyone and even purchased some for the company.
Having had my hard drive fail this year already I lost a lot of my work and information.
I had a big trip to australia coming up so got a special bag for the laptop transported it in hand luggage all the way there only for it to last one evening and then the next day it would not turn on anymore.
When pressing the power the battery icon would light up as well as the power one, then the caps and num lock lights would flash and then nothing, screen not lighting up, no hard drive seek and no beeps from the bios. This remained the case for my entire month in Australia when I needed it for work. In the end I surmised the motherboard must have failed.
However this morning while logging the warranty reques the **bleep** thing started as normal. The whole time I needed it it did not work but now it is fine. Have turned it on and off several times but it seems to work fine.
So what happened? Also the warranty expires in two months so I dont want this to happen again.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks

Agreed to a likely GPU problem, you may want to contact service and have the planar swapped while the machine is still under warranty...
Take a look at this as well:

  • T42 - Problem in Restoring Factory Settings

When I pressed the F11 or Access IBM button to interrupt menu during startup to restore factory settings for T42, it always turn to
Press one of the following keys to continue :
    ESC to resume normal startup
F1 to enter the IBM BIOS setup utility
F12 to choose a temporary startup device
I don't have the recovery CD with me.  I tried to go to "Access IBM" to create recovery IBM, I can't find this in "Access IBM".
Could you advise how I can restore to factory settings?
    Thanks!

You probably have your recovery service partition removed, or someone removed it for you. I presume that your normal OS is not booting up correctly anymore???
There is two ways you can go about it if you don't have your normal OS running anymore, you can use a normal XP OS you got from somewhere, and then proceed to install your OS and then download all your relevant drivers from Lenovo site here:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=9&template=/productselection/landin...
make sure you fill the requiste detail regarding model type
or call Lenovo/IBM service at your location and see whether they can send you the CD for a service charge, this will depend on whether you still got warranty, and whether your warranty is valid in Hong Kong for your machine, the Lenovo/IBM service may send you the cd if you don't meet either one of those conditions, but it is not a given.
I will suggest you just get your own XP os, you can still use the serial key on the bottom of the machine, but you may need to call Microsoft regarding issue of specific activation code.

  • T42 docking station problem

    Hi all.
Having this weird issue with one of our worker's T42. Whenever she connects her T42 to a docking station and closes the lid of the laptop, mouse starts moving around, no emails can be selected in outlook, no option to restart the computer (start->shutdown brings up the dialog window, but can't choose anything from there.)
She has tried another dock, but no difference, same problems.
    Do you have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Solved!

    Lullaby, welcome to the forum,
    Some suggestions to try;
    1) replace the dome TrackPoint cap with the Traditional "hairy" one, it has a lower profile.
    2) remove the Trackpoint cap all together
    3) ensure that the keyboard is seated properly, removal and installation instructions can be found here (You could maybe also try bending the keyboard a bit if you remove it)
    4) disable the Trackpoint using the UltraNav utility or in BIOS
As you can probably guess, I believe your problem maybe that the Trackpoint is in contact with the screen when closed.
    Hope this helps

  • Problems with friend's T42 laptop

    Hi everyone,
my friend has given me her Daughter's T42 laptop (Pentium M 1.7ghz and 2GB of RAM, Running Vista Business) to have a look at, as it is acting very oddly.
The laptop will boot up, and everything is fine, then all of a sudden, the screen will go black. I tried hooking it up to a monitor and could see the laptop's display for a while, then that went black, as well.
It even did the same thing when I went to click on something in Windows, after leaving it running for ten minutes. If you leave it for a while, the screen works again, but not for very long. I did notice that the laptop is running a generic GFX driver. Could this be the problem?
Many thanks in advance : )

Maybe that in Safe mode has gpu less to do - it makes less heat, and then it reaches longer time working. Problem of these T4xs is that gpu during the time losts contact with mobo (board isn't well protected from flexing). When your T42 runs in normal mode, gpu has more things to do, and of course produces more heat. And when you are moving your heated notebook, flexing motherboard causes problems in connection between gpu and the rest of mobo. And in final are the pins as bad, as it shows us blank screen and -no-responding- notebook.
I've finally checked my idea by playing some music. When screen blanked, music stopped too - it shows us, that it is not any kind of only display problem, but an heavy issue. Sorry, your mobo needs to be replaced. Or maybe rather buy a new laptop (T61 with integrated GPU).
And if may I offer you a temporary solution:
    1) do not move with your laptop when necessary
    2) eject your ultrabay accessorie - notebook is better cooled inside (it helped me well)
    3) when screen again goes blank, make a high (but no enormous!) pressure on the keyboard in place of keys "V, B and spacebar. GPU is under them, and making a pressure on it may a little improve the contact between it and the mobo (you know when the pins are hot, it is possible to attach them and improve the broken contacts - but it is only my idea - I've done it few times, and the result is sporadic :-) )
I hope that I helped you! And again very sorry for my english level)))

  • T42 video problem

i just configured a t42 for my use at home.  xp sp2.  all applicable msoft and lenovo patches.  it works and then the screen goes black and there are thin white vertical lines across the screen. reboot clears it till the next time.
i ran pc doctor 5, which lenovo provides, for 5 passes with the script that tests everything and nothing happened.  but if i am just working it will do it.
no specific pattern of use causes it.  suggestions please?
    thanks.

What George says is correct. However, the random blackouts are more likely also caused by the dying CCFL backlight bulb, or possibly, a failing 'inverter card' (a fairly cheap fix). Here's how to tell if it's the backlight, or the (more serious) "loose GPU problem": when the screen goes dark, look at it closely under a bright light, like a flashlight beam. Can you still dimly see your desktop windows as they were before "light's out"? If you can, then congratulations -- it's the backlight (or the inverter, which powers the backlight bulb). Replacing either the backlight or the inverter is a lot cheaper than a new LCD panel, or GPU repair (which'll take an expert with a soldering station, or a new motherboard.) In any case, I hope you're all under warranty!
    <> New backlight: ~$75-150 (or only about $15 if you are skilled -- or crazy! -- enough to DIY);
    <> new inverter card: ~$20-50;
    <> GPU resolder/new motherboard: ~$175-400, or more!
These are the prices I've seen lately, and believe me, I've been looking. Why, you might ask? Because, my friends, I, too, am the proud owner of a T42p with a pink, dim screen that's blacking out randomly, from every few seconds to a few minutes. In fact, I just typed this post on it.
    I feel your pain.
I have decided to go the DIY route -- not because I'm particularly skilled, but because I'm particularly broke (and out of warranty). Will post the outcome when the time comes, with links to vendors. Wish me luck!

  • Help Needed for T42 Start-up Problem

    Urgent help need!!!
I have a ThinkPad T42 with Windows XP installed.  It works perfectly for a while without ever have any problem or error message.  Then suddenly it won’t work anymore.  The symptom is following:
After power on the laptop the Microsoft window would show up and it prompt me for window logon password.  After I type in the password it then shows “window is loading your personal setting”.  After a long while nothing would show up on the screen other than the background of the normal screen.  There is no window bar at the bottom or any icon on the screen.  If I start in safe mode then everything would show up.  I don’t know what is going on.
This happened two months ago and I ended up restoring a backup image to get it work again.  It happens again today with the same symptom.  I am really tired of having to restore image backup every 2 months.
I would really appreciate it if any of your experts can offer me some insight into this problem.  I am desperate in need of help.
    Thanks very much!

    computerNerd, welcome to the forum,
You can find all drivers for your T42 on this site. I suggest you start with the Intel Chipset driver and then the Ethernet driver, after this you should use System Update as suggested by stealthth as this will install drivers for you automatically.

  • T42 network connection problem after installing XP SP3

We have had problems with wireless connection after installing Windows XP SP3 on our T42 laptops.
To cut a long story short the solution was actually related to the driver for the wired ethernet card. With version 8.7.9.0 of the driver an ipconfig gave an error saying there was a hardware problem and new wireless connections could not be made without a wired connection being made first.
The solution was rolling back to driver version 7.2.17.101 at which point all the problems were resolved.
My question is what would be the pitfalls of rolling back to an older driver from 2004. In other words what is in the newer drivers that makes them 'better'. Will I now encounter a new set of problems?
Many thanks in advance for your support.

    Anthony, welcome to the forum,

  • T42 WLAN problem: DecryptDataUsingMsCsp: Invalid Parameter

Have problem with my T42 (2374 BW7) running under XP SP3, no other updates installed.
Wired network works fine, no problems with IP config, DHCP, connections, etc. But wireless works only sometimes. I am connected via D-Link DI-624+, wlan is configured as WPA-PSK and all other machines like PCs and mobile connect perfectly, only T42 has problem. It looks like T42 is not allowed to get IP from DHCP. Error message in AcccessConnection says that I ahve to check my DHCP settings (which are OK!), browsing via AccessConnection DEBUG LOG I see lot of entries like this:
ERROR Access Connections( magda(Prvlg).3412.2748) [7/15]11:50:31:584 CAcCryptHlpr:ecryptDataUsingMsCsp: Invalid Parameter
I tried to use simple WEP instead of WPA-PSK - no progress, still no connection in most cases. I also tried to connect directly via XP application (no with Access Connections) - the same case.
Any hints from you? What to check now?

    Hi
You have to configure an AP-Group & then add your WLAN to your AP group. Since WLAN-ID is greater than 16 those will not advertise by default-ap group.
It should be something similar to this
    ap group APG-1
     wlan wifitest
      vlan xx
     wlan test3
      vlan yy
     wlan open
      vlan zz
Then you need to put your AP in to that AP group from default ap-group. You can do that via CLI using below syntax.AP will reboot during this process.
    3850#ap name <AP1-Name> ap-groupname APG-1
    y
    3850#ap name <AP2-Name>  ap-groupname APG-1
    y
    3850#ap name <APn-Name>  ap-groupname APG-1
    y

  • T42 booting problem

I have two Thinkpads and I lent my old T42 to my nephew for a couple of months.  He returned it to me this week saying it no longer boots.  I have a set of Recovery Discs (Discs 1 - 6) which came with a separate CD titled: IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid  Restore.  I put this in and booted and went through the entire routine from it to Recovery Disc 6 without anyproblem.  However, now, regardless what I do, Windows XP will not start; a reboot will bring me back into the Rescue and Restore routine (even with no CD in the tray); then the machine reboots on its own back into the R&R routine, then reboots on its own to the R&R, etc. ad infinitum.  Continually pressing or holding F8 does nothing to stop the routine.
I am almost 70 and not the sharpest tool in the shed and would really appreciate if anyone give me a hint or two into solving this problem.  Having the machine serviced professionally at today's charges would cost more than a new Lenovo.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi TonyVella, welcome to the forum,
please try the following; shut the system down and then start it again. When you see the BIOS splash screen with the message "to interrupt normal......." please press the blue Acces IBM button or F11 and enter the recovery mode, select to recover the system to factory state.
On some older systems the recovery was a two step proceedure; create the recovery partition from discs and then recover the system from the newly created partition.

  • T42 - 2373-4WU WLAN Driver Problem

    Hello,
I have searched the forum but couldn't find the answer.
A friend of mine brought me a T42 (2373-4WU), hard drive was dead so we bought a new HDD and installed it.
I reinstalled Windows XP PRO (SP3) and got all the drivers from IBM site all of them are working except the WLAN.
I don't know which brand/model is used in this notebook (since it has the Centrino sticker I am guessing it should be one of the Intel ones) there are 9 different drivers on the support site (Onlye 8 of them is actually available, 1 link is broken) for this model and none of them is matching this card.  I am about to go crazy, how can I know which WLAN card is hidden in this machine?

    Update:
The one driver that had a broken link was the one I needed (1rwc89ww.exe), it came back online and resolved my problem.

  • T42 and alt codes problem

I am in the process of writing a biography in English which includes a lot of French words and accents.  I rely a lot on alt-codes for diactritics.  My G575 has its own numeric keypad so alt-codes are no problem but my wife's T42 does not have a separate numeric keypad. Turning the NumLk on and off for every accent she needs is getting rather tedious and so is switching from English to French to English keyboards.
I bought an external USB numeric keypad for the T42.  It enters numbers readily enough but it will not enter alt codes. It also turns on the NumLk on the T42 not just its own.
Is there an answer?  Thanks in advance for all help.

    Hello,
Since you are running Microsoft Windows XP, you could try enabling the Language Bar.  Once it is enabled, you could select the French and/or French-Canadian keyboard layouts and be able to enter the accented characters, just as if you had a French or French-Canadian keyboard installed.

  • T42 display problem

Hey guys, I just recently got a IBM t42 and its been working great until yesterday when all of the sudden it started having blackouts at random intervals. At first I thought it must be a screen problem so I tried connecting it to a secondary moniter, but when I did this I had the same issue. It blacked out on the secondary screen shortly after booting up also. It also will blackout when I move it or when I close it and open it again or when I try to run a movie or play a game. Any help would be great.
