T42 Rescue and Recovery V4.0

I reinstalled my entire system from disk, then downloaded all the most up to date drivers and downloads for my model type. When I start rescue and recovery to back up my system it kicks me out. I exit at that time and then go back in and it says a backup is in progress do not power off. Why would it kick me off and still run? Is the Version 4.0 the right one for a T42 2378DTU?

ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery v4.2 is available to enterprises at this moment only, you can buy it from IBM parts for $75 + state tax + shipping though.

  • T42 Rescue and Recovery password SOS

    Hey guys!
I just got a refurbished T42 less than a month ago, and in that time period, the hard drive has crashed I did not have any recovery disks whatsoever so i ordered the complete seven disk set plus the 'rescue and recovery' disk. Prior to having these, i was getting the '<windows root>system32/hall.dll' message and it said that windows was corrupted. Upon receiving the disks, i changed the boot order to boot from CD, and inserted the 'rescue and recovery disk' and it booted all the way to a screen which asked for a password. I bought this laptop used so i have NO idea what it could be. Is there any way to bypass this password?!?! PLEASE HELP!! thank you.

If it is the Rescue and Recovery password, you can format the hdd and reinstall a new Rescue and Recovery partition using those disks that you bought.

  • How to install Rescue and Recovery CD to my T42

I ordered Rescue and Recovery CD to install my T42, and I got 8 CDs, one is independant, and other 7 CDs are for T42, so I just wonder how do install it, I mean use which CD, or which is used firstly, anyway, could someone tell me step-by-step to rescue my laptop.
    Thanks a bunch.

Well, you should wipe the entire drive before using the recovery disks, including the original recovery partition if it's corrupted.
The disks will create a new recovery partition.

  • Rescue and Recovery for T42

    Hi all,
Can anyone help with a link to download the original Rescue and Recovery program for a T42?
In my infinite wisdom I deleted the program to gain some HD space but now I need it.
I went HERE to download but it keeps giving a Server Timeout error.
    I'd appreciate any help

Yes, you can use the disks from another T42...
Go into BIOS, set the media drive (DVD or whatever you have) as the primary booting device, press F10 to save and exit.
Insert the first disk, boot the machine and the recovery set will guide you from there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Rescue and Recovery Failure - T42

When resuming from hibernation, or sometimes just because the wind blows - system shuts down "fatal error" (blue screen), troubleshooting report, etc.. Takes me to Windows error reporting indicating that a device driver is causing the error, most commonly indicates that there is a conflict with Rescue and Recovery software.
This has become a frequent occurrence and is more than a little frustrating. The laptop is in serious jeopardy of becoming a speed bump in the parking lot.
Any help - advice - guidance??

  • Blue Screen error message after using Rescue and Recovery.

Good morning - I unfortunately had to use the IBM Rescue and Recovery feature to restore my factory settings.  However, now my computer is giving me a blue screen error during the startup process.  Unfortunately it is not on the screen long enough for me to get too much information from it, but I have been able to get win22n51.sys as being some sort of error message.  If I start the computer in safe mode it will load without the error.  If I use the safe mode plus networking it gives the error.  So I'm assuming it has something to do with the network drivers?
I would appreciate any ideas you all have for resolving/further diagnosing this problem.
    Thank you!

    Hello,
Perhaps this Lenovo knowledgebase article, "XP Crash: System may hang or restart with a previous version of the Intel PRO 2200BG Mini PCI adapte..." will be of help to you in resolving the problem?

  • How to install "Rescue and recovery" on a new harddisk (T60)

    My T60 has a 60gb harddisk and I want to upgrade to a 160gb.
I need to know how to install this rescue and recovery on the new disk.
Can some one help me out here
I can imagine for example to create this (hidden) partition with Partition Magic,  but how to continue ?

    Hello,
Have you considered either cloning your old 60GB hard disk drive to the new 160GB model, or using your recovery discs to install a fresh copy of the operating system plus ThinkVantage utilities to the new hard disk drive?

  • Cannot Boot To Windows After Rescue And Recovery

I used the Rescue And Recovery disks (7 disks plus actually recovery cd) on my T42. I received the cd set direct from IBM. I've used the CDs in the past with no issues. This time after following the instructions and completing the restore, I cannot get the computer to boot to windows. It keeps going back to the Rescue And Recovery program. What can I do?

    Refer to the following guide:
FAQ "How to use Recovery CD Disc Set".
"Also, if you get stuck after step 9 with Rescue and Recovery keeps on booting in a loop and not entering Windows then all you need to do is: GomJabbar wrote: While in Rescue and Recovery (with all CD's removed from your optical drive) you need to tell it to Restore Factory Contents. All the CD's really do is install Rescue and Recovery and the files needed to Restore Windows and the original Factory software."

  • Creating Rescue and Recovery Disks for Vista

Started to create a set of Rescue Recovery Disks, the Start Recovery Disk created OK, but when I inserted the 1st Disk of the recovery set, the program stalled for over 1 hour no activity, cancelled the operation using the Vista Task Manager Ctrl-Alt-Del.
Now when I try and rerun Rescue and Recovery, it states I have already run the procedure, which is not so.  How can i now run the Rescue & Recovery Media Program

You can't. Assuming your machine is on warranty Lenovo support should ship recovery disks to you without charge,

  • An Elephant stepped on my Thinkpad - Rescue and Recovery

My backup solution for my thinkpad is an external usb drive using Rescue and Recovery which I keep at my place of work. So if I lose my laptop or it gets stolen or an elephant steps on it (at the zoo?), I still have my backup.
And if the building burns down where the usb drive is stored, I still have my laptop which I always take home every night. I think its a pretty good redundancy solution. The only risk is if I go out for lunch, leaving the thinkpad in the office and the building burns down destroying the laptop and external hard drive together. Its a risk I'm willing to accept.
Now most backup systems have a "recovery disk" where if your computer stops working or is subject to one of the disasters mentioned above, you can load this disk into another computer, boot into a recovery operating environment and recover your precious files. Thinkpad's Rescue and Recovery system goes one step further where you can have the recovery environment on the usb hard drive itself. All you have to do is plug it in and turn on your computer to boot into the recovery operating system. Great idea!
Well I thought......and here is my dilemma....
If my thinkpad is stepped on by an elephant, I would naturally plug my usb drive into my desktop to recover my data files. The problem is, my desktop isn't a Lenovo...so the Rescue and Recovery operating environment doesn't load into memory. It seems to go into this continuous loop of trying to load but fails. Remember I don't want to install Rescue and Recovery onto my desktop, I just want it to load into memory so that I can get access to my back up and transfer my data files to my desktop until such time when I purchase another Thinkpad.
So my question to this forum is; is it true? is Rescue and Recovery crippled in this way that it only works on Lenovo branded machines, even if your Lenovo has been stepped on by an elephant and you don't have another Lenovo immediately on hand?
I mean, is the Rescue and Recovery back up solution, just an external hard drive or is it really a external hard drive and another Lenovo computer
Or is there something (I hope) I have to do in the desktop Bios to be able to get Rescue and Recovery working?
Just wondering...has anyone done a similar test?

    Hello,
Hopefully this email reaches you before an elephant steps on your ThinkPad.
You might find a white paper I wrote about a year ago of interest:  It's called Options for backing up your computer [PDF, 861KB] and goes over some of the various ways in which home and SOHO users can backup their systems.  It's product and operating system agnostic, so it doesn't get into specific recommendations for tools to use, but does go over the types of backup hardware and software available.  One thing it does not cover is cloud-based solutions, though, so that's something you'll want to look into separately.
You didn not mention which model of ThinkPad you had, but you might want to look into something like a Pelican Case for yours, if it fits.  While I'm not sure it would be very effective against elephants, it should give you a chance against probably anything smaller than one of the big cats.

    Aryeh Goretsky

  • Failed rescue and recovery installation

    Hi.
I had a hardisk failure on a T42.  I bought a new (IDE) hardisk and ordered the Rescue and Recovery CDs from IBM.
I got the CDs, but when I try to restore the system to its original setting - restore factory contents -(following the instructions that came with the CDs).
The recovery process stops right after step 8.  (accept the terms and conditions).  In reality it starts to copy some files and then it stops and display the following message.
I get an error message stating:
There was an error during initialization.
Therefore It does not even let me go further than the Startup disk of the rescue and recovery CD set.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
Thanks in advance for the help.

    247prods, welcome to the forum,
I would suggest running Hitachi Drive Fitness Test from bootable cd, therefore testing both drives at once. It maybe that a corrupted hard drive is the cause of your problems?
If everything is OK, disable the Pre-desktop area in BIOS (Security > IBM Pre-desktop area) and  run Secure Data Disposal at its lowest level without writing reports to disc, this will remove everything from the hard drive. Then try the recovery cds again.

  • Infinite Rescue and Recovery Loop

I am restoring a Thinnkpad T42 for a friend, and began using the Rescue and Recovery CDs (there's seven) last night to restore the laptop to it's orginal factory state. Unfortunately at about disc 6 I accidentially hit the keyboard and the process was halted. I restared and began the process all over again, and made it to the last disc. Now, however, I don't know how to get it to go into Windows...all it does it immediately boot into the Rescue and Recovery mode even though it is supposedly finished. I did read the FAQ on this and also the instructions that said the go into the BIOS and hit F9 to have it restore normal booting, but neither of these helped.
(If it helps, it's Windows XP). Ideas?

Really? Nobody has ANY ideas? So this thing is just going to boot into Recovery mode forever?

  • Cannot start from the system after rescue and recovery

I have T42 and did "restore factory contents."  In the process, I use IBM product recovery CD from 1 to 6 and reboot.  However it does not start from Windows XP but IBM rescue and recovery with rapid restore.  I cannot get out form this although I restart  the computer.  I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

    Hello and welcome,
My memory is a little fuzzy on this, but IIRC some of the older laptops used a 2-step recovery process.  You first did the recovery from CD which put the recovery image and restore program on the HD.  One the next boot, the restore program starts, and you select to restore your drive from there.
So, do the recovery from media, reboot to the newly installed restore program, and select to restore your hard drive.
I hope that makes sense... and applies to your machine...

  • How to restore backed up files after I used Rescue and Recovery

    Hi there lenovo community,
so I'm struggling to find a solution on how to open these files right here:
    Link to image
First of all, the program I used to back up my hard drive was the Rescue and Recovery that my lenovo desktop came with. I used an external hard drive (WD My Passport, specifically) to back up my old hard drive. The problem that I'm facing right now is how I can open these files, they seem to be not working with any of the option programs the "open with" thingy offers me. If anyone knows  an easy solution for this please please respond to me immediately.. I would really really appreciate it.  I have important documents there.
    Thanks,
    Enrico

  • Problem with Rescue and Recovery after installing Norton Internet Security 2010

    Hi all.
It's my first time in this forum.
I have a problem, with Rescue and Recovery, after installing Norton Internet Security 2010 on my T43.
    The message I get it:
"Rescue and Recovery is unable to back up the file 'C:\Documents and settings\all Users\Application Data\ Norton\ 00000082\00000109\000003c1\cltMLS1.bat' Because the file is either corrupted or being used by another application. Please close any application that could be using the file.
I tried to close the Norton but I couldn't find how.

Hi and welcome to the forum,
the reason for this situation is, that the antivir files are protected from being modified.
This is the reason, why this file cannot be backed up. I assume, that you would get much more such messages, as there are surelly multiple files files, that are protected like this.
So the solution is to block folders from being archived. Please start RnR application and in the configuration set this folder as the excluded one.
This will skip the backup of this file and will fix your situation.
Please let me know, if you have covered this.
    Cheers
