T42 Restore Factory State problem

Hello fellow thinkpad-ers,
I am trying to help out a friend, who had her laptop formatted by some idiot, that
didnʼt know about Thinkpads Restore Factory State option. It seems that he
formatted it, and installed some pirated copy of XP...
In Disk Manager, I can still see the hidden partition, but when booting the machine,
and pressing the blue button I cant access the utility.
It gives me a list of 3 options:
-ESC
-F1 for bios utility
-F12 to select boot device
I also have a T42, but it’s a different model. I once tried my disks
on a T41 that I was trying to revive, and they didn’t work...
and was later told by IBM that each machine has unique disks.
I am assuming that the guy that did the "damage" formatted only
C:/ and then installed the pirated XP there, since I can still see the
hidden partition in the Disk Manager... So this makes me think
that the Blue Button menu resides on the C:/ part of the disk.
How could I copy just that, off of a different T42?
Anyone have any idea how to get around ordering the recovery CDs from IBM?
Thanks!
Sutherland

Whoever told you this was mistaken.  With the exception of hardware changes (eg modem from T41 to T42) the disks within a series should work just fine (I've just recovered aT41 with my T42 CDs).  The only difference in using early T42 recovery with a later T42 is the fingerprint reader.  Later T42 disks should work just fine with an early T42.  Go ahead and use your T42 disks on her machine.

  • T42 Restore factory configuration impossible - but recovery part exist

    Hello,
I have a T42 (IBM bought in my business school)
When  I bought it the PC had 4 part in the Hard Drive
    2 part visible
    - C: SYSTEM
    - E: USER DATA
    1 part hidden
    - IBM_Service W:  (the recovery part) - all the program and a 2 drive partition C and D or E
    + BIOS
To be able to restore the factory configuation I had in the menu to start Windows Two choices
    - Start Windows normally
    - Restore factory configuration
Due to a problem on the laptop I had to restore the factory configuration 2 or 3 times in the last two yearss. It worked well two times.
But  Last time the Laptop did not recognize after the restoration the E: DRIVE. It was on the computer but with no name and no possibility to access it.
I uses TESTDISK to regive a name E to this part and be able to use it and restore the data in it but during the process the Recovery part (Drive W which was hidden appeared on the System list
On the same time the choice "Restore factory configuration " on the list of the start of Windows disappear. I use my friend computer to put back on the list the name of the choice but this link can't restore the Factory configuration because it is no longer configurate for it.
Is there a possibility to boot the PC on the Recovery part in order to restore the factory configuration?
does this manipulation will keep my 2 drive configuration C: + USER DATA drive (E with all the data saved in it? That works the first two times
Thanks in advance for your help
This will help me very much

Sorry for the english I did my best

  • Help needed restoring factory state on X220!

    Hi there,
I just bought a 2nd hand X220. The seller advertised it as having its recovery partition intact (when I remove the battery there is a license/COA sticker for Windows 7 Pro), unfortunately the previous owner installed a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on it (which I believe might actually be a non-genuine copy).
However, I can see the Lenovo_Recovery drive in Windows Explorer, it shows up as drive E: and has the following files (all hidden): LenovoQDrive application along with the FactoryRecovery partition containing bcdinfo.txt, cdrivebackup.wim, RECOVERY.INI and sdrivebackup.wim.
Previously when I pressed the ThinkVantage button on startup, it would show me the menu to go to BIOS setup (F1) or choose different boot device (F12), but no F11 option.
I read about the Recovery Repair Diskette, but also found a page saying that this doesn't apply to Windows 7 machines anymore, and that I should just install the latest Lenovo Rescue and Recovery. So I have now downloaded and installed Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4.50, but now when I press the ThinkVantage button or F11 upon boot-up, it briefly says something like "launching recovery application..." but then proceeds to boot into WIndows 7...
Can someone please help me restore the factory state?
    Many thanks in advance!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, after 2 full days, I finally got it all sorted out, but what a way to spend your christmas holidays!! :-)
Basically I followed the instructions from phil5 in this thread, particularly messages 3 and 6.
    So here's what I did:
Recreated the Q: partition: copied contents of the Lenovo_Recovery partition to temporary storage.
    Reformatted entire hard disk.
Recreated Q: partition using GParted by placing an NTFS partition, roughly 10GB, at the end of the disk.
Copied all the Lenovo_Recovery files back there.
Created WinPE USB disk with Imagex using Win AIK (thanks to phil5's post mentioned above).
Booted using this disk, manually restored S: and C: partitions, again according to instructions in phil5's post.
This resulted in a working factory state. However, when I tried to restore to a factory state from this condition, it resulted in a problem on bootup (corrupt winload.exe(?)). This is likely due to the fact that my recreated Q: drive didn't have the various files required for booting (bootmgr and whatnot). I fixed the situation by repeating the last steps from phil5's post: fixboot, fixmbr.
From this state, now I *created* recovery media to USB! Unfortunately it wouldn't fit onto my 8GB USB key (initially), so...
I create the recovery media to a 500GB USB hard disk.
Used GParted to resize the partition down to smallest possible size (+/- 8GB).
Used Clonezilla to save the disk image.
Used Clonezilla to restore the disk image to the 8GB USB key (which I was initially informed wouldn't fit, but turns out it does!)
End result, I am in possession of a shiny 8GB USB key with a working set of recovery media. Phew!
Thanks all, and hope this might help someone in the future.

  • Restore System State problem

    Hi All,
There were some changes done to the Runtime Systems of a track and were saved. When performed a Restore System State, it kept runnning for a very long time and so the server was restarted and tried it again. After the third server restart, in the queue, it shows the status as import running.
Since the Restore System State is initiated once, the compartments are empty, so existing DCs do not appear anymore.
Does anybody has an idea whats going wrong and how to delete the queued entries and do a successful restore system again?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
UPDATE 11/13: Left for a day running, now I can atleast see the developed DCs in the compartments but still not JTECHS/JBUILDT/JEE DCs. I managed to unqueue them and started the import again. It still seems to be taking quite some time.
    Thanks a lot,
    Rajit

    Hi Rajit,
just as a quick checklist: does anything happen on CBS?
Is the input mode set to PRIVILEGED? If not there's some communication problem between CMS and CBS, check logs for HTTP timeouts or similar issues.
Are there any requests queued, but not processed? If yes, is CBS set to idleStart=true in the service properties?
Is there maybe not enough diskspace available, or is the temp-space for CBS on a RAID 5 that could explain poor filesystem performance?
Is the database on the same machine, is there maybe some problem there?
Does the default trace in the log viewer show any issues with the engine installation?

  • T42 - Problem in Restoring Factory Settings

When I pressed the F11 or Access IBM button to interrupt menu during startup to restore factory settings for T42, it always turn to
Press one of the following keys to continue :
    ESC to resume normal startup
F1 to enter the IBM BIOS setup utility
F12 to choose a temporary startup device
I don't have the recovery CD with me.  I tried to go to "Access IBM" to create recovery IBM, I can't find this in "Access IBM".
Could you advise how I can restore to factory settings?
    Thanks!

You probably have your recovery service partition removed, or someone removed it for you. I presume that your normal OS is not booting up correctly anymore???
There is two ways you can go about it if you don't have your normal OS running anymore, you can use a normal XP OS you got from somewhere, and then proceed to install your OS and then download all your relevant drivers from Lenovo site here:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=9&template=/productselection/landin...
make sure you fill the requiste detail regarding model type
or call Lenovo/IBM service at your location and see whether they can send you the CD for a service charge, this will depend on whether you still got warranty, and whether your warranty is valid in Hong Kong for your machine, the Lenovo/IBM service may send you the cd if you don't meet either one of those conditions, but it is not a given.
I will suggest you just get your own XP os, you can still use the serial key on the bottom of the machine, but you may need to call Microsoft regarding issue of specific activation code.

I just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS6.  In the process, I ran into a problem and had to restore factory settings.  After syncing the phone, I see that 218 apps need to be updated. When selecting "update all," it says "Cannot Download.  There is not enough available local storage to download these items.  You can manage your local device storage usage in Settings."
How can this be the case when I haven't changed any apps from before updrading to iOS6, and I don't have any music yet on the phone?  Why is it telling me there is not enough local space?

    Hi RileyAvaCadenRiver,
If you recently updated your iPhone to iOS7, you will need to update iTunes on your computer to iTunes 11.1 or newer for it to correctly recognize the iPhone. You may find the following link helpful:

ok...so I had to restore my computer back to its original factory state:( now I have lost all my music on itunes. Can I get them back??  if so, how??

You can download everything you purchased from the iTunes Store without having to pay again:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Here is the procedure for your reference, using iTunes 10.7. The procedure and screenshots for newer versions are contained in the above link.
This assumes what you purchased is still available in the Store.
Open iTunes and click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
Sign in with your Apple ID, then click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.

Same thing happened with my iPhone 4S - no one is any help.  Thanks Apple for such a crappy update!  I've called Apple, they say the SIM card needs replacing, I go to my service provider they tell me nothing wrong with the SIM card - provider tells me I now need a new phone.  Sheesh!  If someone has a solution to this it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Need to delete all data and restore computer to factory state !

Hi - please help. I have made a mistake - I tried to migrate data from my iMac to my brand new MacBook Pro (no idea why !) , and I have way too much data. The MacBook memory is full already. I therefore want to delete everything and restore the MacBook to its factory state. I have already deleted and reinstalled OX S thinking this would do it but it hasn't. The issue is it says the disk is full but I can't see any files or folders to delete. Where are they ? And how can I delete them all ? Please help - I am very excited about my MacBook Pro and within 24 hours its clogged up

    Power off your MacBook.
Hold down the "Option" button while starting up the computer. You may let go once you see the spinning dial below the apple.
Using the arrow keys, navigate to 10.8 Recovery and press enter.
Select your language and go into Disk Utility.
Click on your hard drive (not "Macintosh HD," the one above that with the brand name, model, and capacity).
    Go to the "Erase" tab.
Make sure the volume type is set to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)," and click the "Erase" button on the bottom of the window (not "Erase Free Space," that will do nothing), and choose how secure you want the erase to be. The less secure the faster it will go. For a hard drive with a capacity of 128 GB this can take anywhere from 3 hours (least secure) to 24 hours or more (most secure).
Go through the same process you did to reinstall the operating system.
You should be good to go.

    Hello @dazegoneby,
I understand that your HP Pavilion p6-2220t Desktop PC running Windows 7 used to connect to your home network without an issue, but recently it does not recognise the network. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection (Windows 7), which has steps to help resolve issues such as this. Now I am not recommending that you do the step that asks you to reset up your router as you have other devices that are working fine so that would not be the issue.
If the above document does not resolve your issue could you please re-post with either a screen shot of your Device Manager showing what is listed in Network Adapters or re-post with which wireless card you have.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!
Also be sure to mark my post as “Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others who face the same challenge find the same solution.

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, either get a sim card from the carrier your phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.

I have no more 'answer because my computer had crashed complete.
    I apologize.
    Order the media why?
If discs created the first time the PC will not work. I suppose that does not solve the problem discs hp (I also read about a problem like mine. This problem has not been resolved with the media bought by HP).
I shot weeks the web and I finally found the appropriate procedure.
I made several attempts to solve the problem. But now I have succeeded.
1- Show Hidden Files \ protected
2- Enter with a program (es: file commander) in recovery partition and copy the file or files base.wim. My is about 18 Gb, 1 file.
3- We need a second PC and dvd
4- Follow a procedure described by internauta 37.
Search "Ripristinare portatile HP senza DVD e se l'HP Recovery Manager non funziona Internauta37"
E 'was for me a little complicated but in the end I have my hp to the state of factory and everything works perfectly.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
