T420 4177-CT0 Firewire!?!?!

Hello, just received a T420 4177-CT0 and I was wondering how in the heck I enable the Firewire port in Win7?! The port is physically there and enabled in the BIOS but is not showing up in device manager.  I've been looking around and can't find any info on a driver or such.
The reason i'm trying to enable it is that i'm going to purchase an audio interface for recording soon and was wondering if I should go with a USB 2.0 or Firewire card.
Any ideas/suggestions?!!?
thx for your time
jcm

I don't see mine in device manager, but I have used it with my miniDV camera and it works fine.

  • Screen Upgrade on T420 4177

    Dear Experts,
I have recently been upgraded by my company from a T400 thinkpad to a T420.  My one disappointment is that my T400 had a max screen resolution of 1440 x 900, but my T420 has the lower end screen and a max resolution of 1366 x 768.  I travel with this laptop often, so always have the luxury of a second monitor.
There is an upgraded screen available for my T420 model that offers 1600 x 1200 resolution.  So could I upgrade the screen on my T420 to the higher res screen?  Will the graphics card handle this (Intel HD Graphics 3000) as it seems like the same graphics driver whether it has teh low end or high end screen?  Or do I need to stay with the lower resolution screen?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Mark Farnan

    Hi,
Your words about the screen with 1600x1200 resolution as available upgrade for t420 sound a bit strange since this screen has 4:3 aspect ratio while t420 supports the screen with 16:9 aspect ratio.
Officially t420 supports the screens with maximum resolution 1600x900 (HD+) and LVDS signaling interface. Even if you'll find the FHD screen (1920x1080) I'm sure it will be a problem with that screen support in t420 BIOS. So, not a GPU or driver might be the causes.

  • T420 4177 No USB Ports Responding

There are two USB related devices listed as Unknown devices in the Device Manager, under the Other Devices category.
    1 - Location: Port_#0001.Hub_#0002
    Hardware Ids:
    USB\VID_8087&PID_0024&REV_0000
    USB\VID_8087&PID_0024
    2 - Location: Port_#0001.Hub_#0001
    Hardware Ids:
    USB\VID_8087&PID_0024&REV_0000
    USB\VID_8087&PID_0024
    Things I've done thus far:
    All Windows Updates
    All Lenovo Updates
BIOS Update, reset to defaults, ensured USB is not disabled
Manually deleted all USB devices, rebooted, Scanned for hardware changes
Manually deleted the 2 Unknown devices, Scanned for changes
Worked with Lenovo phone/remote support (they really had no idea where to start)
OS is Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
    Thank you in advance!
    Jordan

As you are experiencing USB ports are not responding. I would suggest you to please uninstall the USB drivers from the Device Manager and then restart the system.
After that please visit the mentioned below web link and install the chipset driver.
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83ra28ww.exe
Now, please restart the system and check if the issue resolved.

  • T420(4177-CTO bought only 3days) keyboard doesn't respond well

When I hit the right arrow bottum for 10 times. It only responded 8~9 times. Will this problem in the warranty? How long will this fix takes? I really need to use this computer these days.

You are in UK right? This is most likely an issue with the keyboard. If you contact warranty support they should help you out.

  • I'm begging for help, Windows 8.1 Pro Bitlocker, a Crucial M500, and T420...

I have a Lenovo T420-4177 and a Crucial M500 self-encrypting drive, Win 8.1 Pro. I have made sure that the BIOS is up to date, that TPM is turned on and verified it is v1.2 AND initialized, the BIOS is set to boot ONLY to UEFI OS (i.e. CSM is disabled), BitLocker is configured in Local Group Policy to use hardware encryption. Why is it then that when I try to use BitLocker that it will only use software encryption??? Google has been less than cooperative in providing me clear "how-to check UEFI version" results.

  • T420 with Multiple Monitors

I have a T420, with a Dock series 3 (model 4338).  I would like to set it up to have 2 external monitors and to also use the laptops display.  The KB references the Optimus drivers, which I do not have.   My display adapter is recognized as an Intel (R) HD Graphics Family.  Is there a way to also use the laptop display or do I have to have the Optimus to enable it?
    Thanks in advance

with your laptop this method is not possible, you would need the Nvidia equipped GPU to do this.
However, you can run the laptop with an additional external screen by getting a usb2dvi converter or an eGPU solution.

  • Lenovo T420 fan not working

I've had my T420 (4177-CTO) for around 2 months, and the fan has already stopped working. Yesterday, the fan was continuosly running all day even when it was sitting idly. Today, the fan won't run at all, and my CPU temperature is going up to ~80C  (170F) when I run anything intensive. The computer itself is even way too hot to touch at the bottom.
Does anyone have suggestions as to what I can do to fix this problem? I can't tell if something's wrong with the hardware or with the BIOS. I'm still covered by a warranty but I can't afford to lose my laptop for an entire week (work).
I hate that Lenovo doesn't have centers where you can take your laptop to be looked at. I had similar problems with my T61 a few years ago, and even had my fan replaced for it to break again.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

For troubleshooting, I would try another operating system (such as an Ubuntu live CD) and see if the fan starts working. Also, there might be some power management settings in the BIOS (one to choose the performance on AC and another for battery), and you could fiddle with the Thinkvantage power management setings.
However, it seems really strange that this problem would suddenly occur...

  • T420 Build Issues

My T420 (4177 CTO) is still under factory warrenty, so it is less than a year old. There are two build issues that I have so far ignored, but I am wondering if they are "normal."
The laptop does not rest level on a flat surface. Three of the rubber grips on the underside touch the surface, but the front, left grip is so far off the surface that you can slide a piece of paper under it without resistence. When I rest my left hand on the palmrest, the chassis audibly "creaks" and visibly moves as the rubber grip comes to rest on the surface.
Just recently permanent friction marks have appeared on the left half of my screen, clearly caused by months of rubbing against the keyboard. I have tried cleaning them per Lenovo's instructions, to no avail.
I am beginning to think that the chassis is deformed, and that it has been this way since I received the machine. Both issues have been present since the start, but the marks on the screen could be easily wiped off until recently.
Are these issues "normal," or am I suffering from a defective machine?
Thanks for your opinion or any information!

My T420 has spent its life in a backpack, as did the T400 and T61 before it.  I've never noticed this kind of problem.
Have you taken a careful look at the sides of the laptop to verify that the keyboard bezel and bottom plastic are snapped together correctly?  Any gaps or bulges?

  • Worst ever Customer support in my life

    Hello Team,
My Name is Anish Mathew and you can reach at my number xxxxxxxxxxx).I would like to report one of the worst customer support I have ever experienced in my life. I am not sure which email address I should be sending this,so marked on all addresses I got from the internet. Please forward this to the right people as I didn't find any escalation point.
The story begins around last week of June 2013 when my laptop(Lenovo thinkpad edge xxxxxxxxx doesn't detect my battery. Since it was out of warranty I went ahead and bought a new Lenovo genuine battery thinking that my battery is corrupt. But the laptop didn't detect the new battery. As a next step I reached out at one of your Authorized service center in Bangalore below.
    Caddons Computer Services
    No.3350, KR Road,
    BSK II stage,Bengaluru-560070
    Tel-26762986/87/88
As per the call with the technician I took my laptop to the service center. The initial response itself was pathetic. The problems seems like the chip that is supposed to detect the battery is no longer working. As per Lenovo we cant replace the chip instead we need to replace the Mother board which would cost me 14k. Rahul told me that he will extend the warranty and get the mother board replaced under warranty which would cost me 8k. We agreed this and gave the laptop on 29th June 2013.Attached is the service report copy with the dates for your reference.
Guys Today is 21st Feb 2014 and you know what still nothing has happened. Wont you get frustrated?. Since today I would have made like 100 calls atleast 1 in a week. Every time I call they would say " we will get back to you sir" and thats it. Today when I called Rahul he says Sir be patient it seems. Are you joking?. I have been showing patience for the last 8 months and in a couple of months we will celebrate 1 year(Anniversary). What would you expect me to do at this point?.I will never ever recommend a Lenovo product to a anybody that I know. Please close such pathetic service centers which frustrates your customers. I need an answer ASAP or planning to go to consumer court for Justice. I still expect positive outcome.

Your complaint is with the computer store that you took the computer to.  Go back to the store in person and get your computer back.  They've had it long enough for you to know they are never going to fix it.  Then call the Lenovo customer service number on this website (for India) and work with them.
This is a user forum, not a Lenovo customer service forum.  By all means take the computer store to court (if the Indian court system is anything like the US system, you are wasting your time), but they are not lenovo..

  • Is it possible to install the T60p BIOS update without a battery pack?

    Hello,
I was running some maintenance on my gfs Thinkpad T60p, model 2007EC1, and the BIOS update failed since she does not have a battery pack. The battery pack is unavailable as it was left behind when she came here for the summer. Is it possible to install the BIOS update with out? Is there a work around?
    Thanks for your time.

There used to be some jumper hacks on the web for the older Thinkpad models.  Try a Google search and see if you find anything.

  • UPGRADING TO VISTA FROM XP ON T61P

Hi, You might have addressed this but I dont see any exact matches so here goes.  I upgraded my 6460-DVU T61P from XP to Vista.  Most of the devices on the machine were given drivers automatically by vista, except for one which I have had a problem with in the past.
There are two items that I cannot seem to find
    A. what they are
    B. where their drivers are, or what their drivers are.
Currently labeled "PCI Serial Port", under "Other Devices" it sits.  I have tried everything in order to load a driver to see what would work and I cannot find the correct driver.
Does anyone have the answer as to what driver this simple device needs? The EXACT LANGUAGE used to describe it also?????
    mfc

I don't suppose you printed out your "Device Manager" listing before you upgraded.  Sometimes you can identify you unknown hardware by comparing old vs new.  Failing that, remove the devices in Device Manager and re-boot - sometimes they go away, depending on the order in which the original install proceeded.  Lastly, go through all of the device drivers on your support page at Lenovo.com- most of them will either update or advise you that you have the most current driver.  Start with the chipset and power manager drivers.
Is any known hardware on your computer missing or not working?

  • After factory reset, cannot build the Recover CDs that "should have been burned"

I get an error in RRMEDIA.
Reading some of the things about uninstalling Client Security and updating Rescue & Recovery, I'm not sure I want to
    do that.
I learned today that if I turn off compatibility for the SATA I get the  0x0000007b  after the factory rebuild.
Turn on compatility and the computer "WHEW" comes up.
Should I even worry about making the CDs or just let R&R attempt recover on a 3.2 year old T60?
    Thanks for any input.
    Carver Smith

The recovery CDs simply make a copy of the recovery partition on your HDD, so it sounds like you may have a couple of unrelated issues.  I'd try to re-load from the recovery partiion and hope for the best!  If it doesn't work, you'll just have to buy a set of recovery CDs.
