T420 CPU/GPU Temperatures seem excessive...

I was running Prime95 to check my CPU (Core i5-2520M) temperature (using Real Temp) and I noticed it was a bit high, about 95 degrees celsius. I followed up by running FurMark to check how the NVS 4200 GPU was doing. It ended up sustaining at 87 degrees celsius. I did not run the two tests concurrently.
I decided to strip the heatsink off and apply new thermal compound. After the new compound was applied, the CPU temperature under Prime 95 peaked at 84 degrees celsius. Under Furmark, the GPU sustained at 75 degrees celsius. A very significant drop.
I decided to run the two tests concurrently (after new compound had been applied) and ended up with a CPU temperature of 100 degrees celsius and a GPU temperature of 97 degrees celsius. Pretty horrifying stuff. I can't imagine those values being within operating range.
These torture tests are rather extreme so I followed up with some gaming. I played DOTA 2 for about 3 hours and during that period my CPU peaked at 98 degrees celsius with an average temperature of 93 degrees celsius. I did not log the GPU temperature during this session.
I should mention that Turbo Boost is enabled and the fan was set at maximum speed.
Does anybody have any temperature figures for similair configurations? Specifically in situations where the GPU and CPU are both under high load. I'm curious to know if my temperatures are abnormal.

I started to think that it's not an issue with my sample. I went ahead and confirmed these temperatures on two other identically specced T420s (4178). Under extreme conditions the heatsink/fan unit cannot dissipate heat quickly enough causing both chips (CPU and GPU) to reach dangerous temperatures. If you haven't torture tested the GPU and CPU in your T420 concurrently, you might want to give it a shot. It gets alarmingly hot.
(Do this at your own risk, extreme heat can damage your hardware)

    Hi,
Only have one temperature monitoring application running or you could end up with erroneous readings.
Try PC Wizzard.  Depending on your hardware, you should see temperatures for CPU, GPU and disk. At the same site you can also try HW Monitor.
I am running a custom motherboard and it comes with its own software for this purpose.  HW Monitor seems fairly complete.

  • High CPU & GPU temperature with ATI 4870 Graphics card

Hi I have replaced the original FX1700 card with an ATI 4870 on my S10 and I found the GPU temperature constantly floating at around 58C with no program running and the temperature of the CPU have also gone up to 47C with no programing running and 58C with program running(The temperature of the CPU was fine at under 40C before ATI 4870 was installed). Is this situation normal?
P.S. I have not replaced the orginal fan came with my S10.
Thanks very much for your helps

  • T420 nvidia GPU driver crash

    Hi all.
I have an annoing issue with my t420's gpu. Driver seems to crash very often when i use gpu-hungry apps. i get a message like this "nvidia kernel driver has stopped responding but was recovered'.  Maybe anoyone has the same problem and solved it?
System is windows 8 64bit with the latest updates and video drivers.

Lock PCI/AGP to 66/33, that's the first thing.
2nd thing, get a better RAM.
3rd thing, get a better PSU.

  • Re: CPU core temperatures

I just received my laptop back from being serviced due to GPU overheating. It seems fine now in that department, but it would appear that the company which Toshiba employs to service computers in Sweden messed up elsewhere. Now my CPU core temperatures are even higher than before, fluctuating from 50 C (centigrade) when the computer is idle, to quickly rising to 80-90 during processor load. When I play, for example, Batman: Arkham Asylum, CPU 1 is 99C and CPU 2 104 C.
It would help me a lot if some of you guys would tell me what temperatures your computers run, CPU-wise, during heavy loads and also how quickly temperatures fluctuate between high and low temperatures. I just need to open a minor application and my CPU temps spike from 50 to 90, as mentioned above. I can't see how that is acceptable. I just might have to send the computer back, and it took them over 3 weeks to fix my first problem.
    Best regards,
    Johan

Thanks guys. I am using Toshiba drivers and the notebook is placed on a clean, flat surface. What concerns me is how quickly the CPU heats up slightly over 100 degrees centigrade. We're talking about less than a minute, and sometimes only a few seconds to reach 90. The GPU is fine after the service I mentioned in the original post.
However, I really appreciate your feedback and I will get that device to clean out dust. :) Oh, and I spoke to Toshiba's support and they said they can't discuss results yielded by 3-rd party software, such as Nvidia's System Monitor. Instead I am to stress test the computer, battry fully charged, and see if it turns itself off after having suffered high temperatures long enough.

  • GPU temperature 98 deg C

My new MSI N580GTX Twin Frozer II (O/C edition) is hitting GPU temperatures of 98 deg C.  Is this too hot for a GPU?
Seems a bit high to me.  Also, the fan speed is always at 100 % when playing a 3D game.  I have not messed with any overclocking and running the card at factory settings.  Its annoying because the card is supposed to be 19 deg cooler than the reference design.  Even in Windows the card is 50 deg C.
I'm also wondering if the way the card vents heat into the PC case is a bad idea, because other parts such as the CPU and PSU is going to have a hard time keeping cool as well.  Other cards vent heat out of the PC case.

    Quote
The hint is that releasing heat back into the case, rather than venting out is a design flaw.  I had to use a solution to let cold winter air into the room, so the card is not recycling the warm air in the case.
A GPU card by design, is normally positioned horizontally once inside the case. How do you expect two fans on the card to vent to the outside ? By means of a sealed fan unit with an exhaust pipe of some sort, to the back ? How much thicker do you want the total card to be to achieve that ? Its not a design flaw, its rather a restriction in GPU design because of component standards and maximum dimensions.  If your case is unable to expel the warm air, then its inevitable that the warm air is recycled again and again, and the temp will keep on rising.
    Quote
also the mobo is a BTX and its hard to get a case for it.
Most mid tower cases have got the mounting holes for ATX, mini ATX, ITX and BTX these days.
Your case intake and outflow volume should at least surpass the volume of air moved by the 2 GPU fans.
    Quote
Thanks for the info but the manufacturers doesn't say anything about which PC case the 580 was designed for, or that it was meant for home builders with special cases.
No it doesn't, nor does any GPU card say that. The manufacturers expect some user discretion with regards to that. They also don't say that you shouldn't put it inside an oven.  It's logical that the airflow inside the case should be commensurate with the GPU's typical power draw, in the case of the 580, that could be around 250W under load. Ever touched a 100W incandescent globe ? Power consumption is directly related to heat. Thus logic will dictate a sensible volume of cool air to keep things in check.
It's your set-up and you need to make the decision. We can only advise. Ultimately you will do what you will do, and it seems, that includes using every argument in the book not to consider the advice that you came for in the first place.

  • Cineform Encoding not utilising CPU/GPU in AME

Hey folks, I'm working on a machinima project at the moment with fairly massive amounts of data. We are acquiring our images at two resolutions, 2560x1440 and 3820x2400, which is generated with Uncompressed RGB .avi files. I am then using the watch folder tool in Media Encoder to convert these to Cineform 444 Filmscan 2 .avi files. There is only a slight amount of disk space saved by this transcoding but the main reason we do this is becaus Premiere seems to be able to play back the Cineform files fin in realtime, where as it can't playback the uncompressed files.
The issue is, that Media Encoder takes about 5x realtime to do this encoding. I have tried with and without Cuda switched on and it doesn't seem to want to utilise my hardware. The CPU usage is about 14% of one core, and the GPU is even less.
Is there a reason Cineform can't max out my CPU/GPU usage in media encoder?
I have tried this on two systems with very different specs, and have the same results.
    System 1: i7 3770K @ 4.6GHz, 32GB RAM, 2x AMD 7970 GPU, 700MB/s RAID5
    System 2: i7 980X @ 4.2GHz, 24GB RAM, 2x GTX 780, 700MB/s RAID5

What are your system specs?  OS version, motherboard, memory, processor, number of hard drives etc...
Unless something jumps out related to your system, I really don't have any idea why it isn't working.  We have two editing systems using the GTX285.  They both are working fine.
If you go to iolo.com, download a free trial of System Mechanic (NOT the professional version which includes anti-virus).  The trial is fully functional for 30 days.  Run a complete system scan, repair problems and then restart.  See if that helps.
You're NOT using the Premiere CS5 trial version... Right?

  • W700: max GPU temperature for Quadro FX3700M?

I've recently noticed a freeze / stall problem in Direct 3D applications (mostly games) with the Nvidia Quadro FX3700M GPU of my W700 (2757) under Win XP x64 and Win 7 Pro x64. The system was running rock solid for more then 3 years, and after a lot of testing with fresh Windows installations and different Nvidia driver versions, I decided to take a closer look at GPU temperatures.
Turned out that in idle mode GPU temps are already 65 °C and climb over 96°C under full load in the GPU testing tool from MSI (MSI Kombustor). Furmark brings it even over 100 °C (I stopped it after a few seconds).
Are these temperatures normal for the FX3700M? I hear the GPU fan kicking in, but it may be necessary to apply fresh thermal compound for optimal cooling.
    I'd appreciate any advice.

I downloaded TPFanControl and it is working well on my W700ds so far.  It shows all the temperatures and allows you to control the fan speed at different temperatures.
Before I blew the air through, I downloaded the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool from Intel.  It tests the processor and loads it up pretty hard.  It gives a differential temperature from the maximum recommended temperature.  At the start of the test my processor indicated 42 degrees below max and at the end 21 degrees below max.  Not sure what max temp is but when I first turned on the TPFancontrol it indicated my gpu was running between 78C and 81C degrees.  Since blowing air back through the fans, the highest gpu temp I saw, with the TPFancontrol running in as received setup, was about 60C. I played with the .ini file for the TPFancontrol and have mine running at a fan level 4 at 57C.  that would be without heavy use.

  • GPU temperature limit

I have t61 with Nvidia NVS Quadro 140M GPU. After replacing the motherboard, stress tests (sisoftware sandra, Furmark) on the GPU show temperatures as high as 102C to 107C. Local official service lab claims they dont see any problem. What are the allowed and the expected temperature limits?

I've used also aida64 for the monitoring, and as a stress test run HD 1080p youtube movie (planet earth, great).
Tpfancontrol shows about 6-10C less tha the other applications, for the GPU. It seems that the other applications read the GPU diode, vs. just 'GPU' (I don't know the difference).
When I turn off the tpfancontrol, the fan drops to about 3200 rpm, while when it is on, and the temp is high, the fan goes up to about 4500 rpm.
I'm not going to open the PC, but intend to take it to another service provider, and I'll try to get the pictures there.
Thanks a lot for the help.

  • GPU Temperature under Nouveau

How feasible is it to get a GPU temperature reading when using the Nouveau driver? I have an Nvidia 8800M GTX card, and cannot find a method that doesn't seem to require the proprietary Nvidia binaries. Does anyone know what might be involved? Currently the only way I know that Nouveau is keeping cycles low is because my hard drive is right next to it - and I can get a temperature reading from that.

Depends what lm_sensors says. Have you got it installed?

  • What is CPU safe temperature

I just got my macbook air 13 inch with 1.8GHz cpu and 8gb of ram
I want to know what is the safe cpu temperature that macbook air can handle
Cause when I run StarCraft 2, cpu temp goes up to 95-105C, and fan speed is 6500rpm.
Will this kind of temperature harms my macbook?

Eventually, yes it will. However, you haven't reached thermal shutdown. If you do the computer will shut itself off. Understand that the MBA is not designed for CPU/GPU demanding games like StarCraft.

  • IMac 27" i5 - GPU Temperature too high ?-

Hi, I just had back my imac 27 from apple store (they changed logic board).
Everything is fine but gpu temps are very high even without running cpu/gpu consuming apps.
    Both GPU diode and heatsink are 70° C, ambient 23° C, CPU 48° C and HD 52° C.
First of the repair I haven't noticed values so high.
It seems to me that some airflow path could have been blocked somehow during repair.
    Any experience about these temps?
    Tips? Apple official replies?
    Thank you in advance,
    A.

I am getting a 1 KHz whine through Behringer Truth monitors using M-Audio USB Fast Track Ultra audio/midi interface with an iMac i5 27-inch with LED monitor. The whine occurs continuously from the moment I open Logic Studio or iTunes, when the output is routed through the Fast Track Ultra. The whine does not occur when I use the imac output to imac's speakers. I also get an electronic scraping noise when I use the blue tooth connected magic mouse. I have installed ferrites on the monitor speaker wires with no reduction in the whining noise or electronic scraping noise. I have also ordered the USB with ferrite collar to see if the connection between audio/midi interface and the imac is the source of the noise. I am considering a Hum-X, as well, but I am getting into serious money taking stabs at a problem for which there ought to be plenty of competent technical support. The fact that this whine is at 1 KHz and not lower suggests that I am not suffering a typical ground loop. I am a former Pro Tools user who never had a hum or whine from my Digi and G4, which I am seriously considering recomissioning so I can make music again. I am spending way too much time and money making educated guesses and trying to diagnose a problem that all but kills the utility and purpose of this new system. I too am calling on all great engineers to step up with a diagnosis and solution.
