there is no sound when i tried to video chat using msn or skype.
I dont know what to do with it .really frustrated

This issue is resolved by installing the latest drivers. Lenovo has the driver and this is in another discussion:

However, the Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox thinks everything is current.

They need to be using AIM 6.1
They need to allow the app through the Vista Firewall ( I presume this is similar to the XP one as no-one is saying different)
They have to navigate to the app called AIM6.exe rather than just AIM as the instructions say (was written for AIm 5.9)

Can iChat have video chat with Windows Messenger?

Is there any way to use Jabber or other means to establish a video chat with an MSN Messenger user?
Alternatively, does anyone know if Virtual PC for Mac supports video chat with windows computers?

The best way is still with a Windows XP PC and MSN Messenger.

There is a beta application called Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X that is an MSN Server client.
However, please note that the Mercury Messenger Webcam / Video Conference Support section, which I quote, in part, includes the following:
Video-conferencing is supported on Mac OS X, however it is receive-only, due to an incomplete JMF library for Mac OS X. The feature is still relatively new, and so some issues may occur in use.
Although Mercury Messenger (beta) will connect to the MSN Server, those comparing it with iChat AV's capability should certainly study the sections about the limitations and known issues.
If you get Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X working, please post back and let us know what you think of it.

VPC for Mac does not support Firewire video, so it cannot use an iSight for video. Sorry, but I have not seen anyone post a method of using VPC that rivals the performance of using the same application on a Windows PC.
Also, VPC with the current version of Windows is so expensive that, at least where I live, it is often cheaper to buy a used, and sometimes a new, PC to run your PC software.
If you really MUST use PC software, I suggest running it on a PC.

Is it possible to video chat with Windows users with Leopard's iChat?
If not, are there any Mac compatible video chat programs that do work?
I don't have Windows XP or Vista to instal on BootCamp or Parallels, so please do not suggest installing a video chat app on Windows/BootCamp.

Weird Artifacting with Windows Live Messenger

So, I noticed that I get some artifacting with Windows Live Messenger's notifications after restoring my W520 to its factory settings again. I got angry at it and restored it to factory settings again, and it is still present. Yes, I've tried updating my software. It is weird as I can play games fine without artifacting. Also, this doesn't happen when when I'm on discrete only, happens in Optimus and integrated only, though. Currently trying a clean install. This has never happened before. If it helps, I recently updated to the 1.26 BIOS.

Are your graphics drivers up to date? Maybe try the NVidia Verde 275.xx driver?
WLM 2011 is GPU accelerated. Does the issue also appear in Skype 5 or IE9 or any other GPU accelerated program?
Does the issue seem to appear when Optimus toggles graphics cards?

If you are using iChat it will not chat with MSN (or similar) buddies without some work

White Screen when "video" chatting with PC

My friend is running AIM 5.9 on Windows XP and when I try to video chat with her, all she sees is a white screen, but still can hear me. I have rebooted my computer, and so has she. We used to not be able to connect at all, but she rebooted and now she can hear me.
What should I do?

Has she enabled it though her XP firewall ?

Problems video chatting with Windows users

It seems like everytime I try and video chat with a Windows AIM user there is a problem. Ralph and other are very techy and know how to resolve these issues. Problem is that 99.9999999% of te people I chat with are not so the advice to resolve these issues proves to be worthless. However me and this individual were able to successfully do audio chat instead. Often when there is a problem like this do I switch people over to Skype which works far better going from Windows to Mac and vice versa and is easier to use. Generally I think iChat has better video quality over Skype, but only with Mac users.
I know there are others here that also have this problem and for you do I encourage the same resolution as bad as it is, but it seems to be the only way to chat with a non techy person who is on a PC.

Any non Microsoft app on a PC has to allowed through the Firewall as a Exception (Or at least since Service Pack 2 for XP when Windows got a firewall).
In XP it goes like this
Open the Control Panels (I prefer the classic view)
Open the Firewall
Click the Exceptions tab
In the new window click the Add Button
Navigate through Program Files to the AIM Folder and the relevant AIM#.exe to allow the app itself. (# is the Version Master number)
Back in the Exceptions window also Allow UPnP
Enable UPnP in their Router.
I am not sure it is that different in Vista or Window 7
If there router does not have UPnP then open port 5190 and 1024-5000 (AIM video does not use all of these they are there to spread the load)
They would have to do similar things for Skype (although like AIM it has Fall Back ports below 1024 for logging in and Text Chatting that get around the firewall issue) other IM apps and On-line Games.
Of course if they are using some third party Firewall they would have to do the work there.
Audio Chats V VIdeo Chats
Both apps use the same ports when it comes to Audio and Video Chats (Tend to be the iChat ones)
I believe AIM still uses 4 ports (from the 1024-5000 range) for VId In, Vid Out, Audio In, Audio out, much the same way iChat 2 and 3 did.
It may pay for you to go to iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth limit and try either 500kbps or 200kbps as the setting.
In earlier version of AIM (5.5 anbd 5.9) it was possible to reduce the Video quality at the AIM end (less frames per second) which allowed "Space" for the Audio part.
AIM 6.x onwards does not have this and the Video feed can be particularly Processor hungry. Your lower setting will be fed back to them and their end will make an adjustment of what can be sent.
Some of this knowledge has taken me since 2004 to acquire.
I can see that applying it might be considered "techy"
I can appreciate that it can be very difficult to persuade a Windows user to change any setting once they have their machine "working" (at least as they want).
I realise this was not so much of a Question as being more of a discussion statement.
I am not sure that there is a real answer other than the one you suggest.

One-Way Video Chat with Windows User

Hi - I have tried several times to begin a one-way video chat with someone using windows XP and AOL 9.0 (I have an iSight and iChat 4.0). She says that it says "connecting" for a long time but nothing happens. ITunes keeps stealing focus from itself when used with Windows Live Messenger 2011

Dear Community,
I've always used WinAmp as my default music player, which worked like a charm both at playing music and showing my 'Currently Listening To' in WLM 2011.
However, I personally think iTunes has better library management, and since I bought an iPod Shuffle (4GB, small stick without buttons, think 3th gen?) I needed it anyway just to be able to listen to my music when I'm in the bus or train, so I made the switch.
It really works quite nice after you get to know the program, minor flaws here and there, but no really big deals. (except the lack of FLAC support, had to recode like 60% of my library, I like lossless audio without a proprietary codec)
At least, not until I used it to show the currently playing song in WLM2011.
Since upgrading from iTunes 9 to 10 (10.4.1.10 to be exact, and upgraded after a clean install of Windows 7 SP1, so to make it clear, iTunes 9 was not installed at the time I installed iTunes 10, nor were there any files or leftovers) it just keeps stealing focus. Not from my browser, or other apps, but from itself!
Whenever I try to edit a song's information and WLM is running, it keeps popping back to the main window, which makes correcting songs (like putting the artist in the right column) a real pain in the ***.
I'm running W7 x64 SP1 (build 7601), all drivers are up to date, WLM 2011 (build 15.4.3538.513) and, if it makes a difference, WLM Plus 5.03.0.716.
I already have it as 'Default Program' for all possible file extensions.
I have looked through these forums to see if there's a similar problem and found many, however, they all apply to older versions (iTunes 6 and 7 or MSN 7 and 8) and don't seem to work with this new version.
If any of you know a way to keep iTunes as my default player and show the currently playing son in WLM2011 without iTunes stealing its own focus, I'd love to hear it!

hi there, i've had this same issue too for a while...so basically...the problem only happens if you run windows live messenger with compatability mode and while you tell windows live messenger to show what music you're listening to.
SO the solution to this problem is to:
1. turn off compatability mode
OR
2. turn off "show imformation about the song im listening to" to on windows live messenger
personally i'd rather just turn off "show imformation about the song im listening to" because windows live messanger tends to crash a lot when compatability mode is turned off.

MSN Messenger for Mac does not support video except via Office Communications Server 2007 (usually paid for by commercial enterprises rather than individual users). However, it is possible to video with your friends who use the PC version of the MSN Messenger family of apps. Here are a couple of ways you can try:
(1) As suggested by Defcom, take a look at aMSN and Mercury
Either can do webcam video with your built-in iSight.
They work a bit differently, so use whichever you find easiest or most reliable on your MBA.
(2) As an alternative, because your iNtel Mac can use Boot Camp, VMware Fusion™, or Parallels™ to run Windows® software, you can choose which method you want to use, add the required software to your iNtel Mac (if you have not already done so), and then install and use the same Windows® Messenger application that your contacts are using to video chat with them.
The Windows drivers for your built-in iSight and your other Mac hardware are on the disk with Boot Camp so, after you have installed Windows, you can install the iSight driver and use your built-in iSight if you like. If you need more help on this, search or post in Boot Camp discussions category
(3) If your friends are willing to try something "new and improved" (does NOT work with Messenger):
you can both install and try a different video chat app such as Google Talk or Skype.

Error with windows live messenger

I tried to update msn messenger yesterday! and since then msn has gone from my phone and in My world the app just says starting download! but has been doing that for 24hrs. Ive had no problems downloading anything else. I cant do anything with it either!!! like start again or go back ....Thanks for any help...

When you device is POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery. This make a reboot to your device which minor issues with the BlackBerry device.
After performing about try downloading the Windows Live Messenger again.

for some reason, after i downloaded the new update today, it doesnt seem to be showing what music im playing on windows live messenger, yet if i used windows media player it shows what im playing, i was wondering how i would be able to turn this setting back on so that it shows what im playing

Server error message when i sign into windows live messenger

hey everyone, i hope someone can help me. ive got a bit of a problem. when i sign into windows live on my blackberry it comes up with an server error message and signs me back out again. ive tried deleting windows live off and re-installing it. i dont know what to do now? i also receive emails to my blackberry off the same address, is this the reason why hope someone can help me!
