T420 not detecting second HDD?

I just got my new T420 and everything looks to be ok so far. However, I wanted to add a second HDD in place of the optical drive and it is not being detected by the system. I am using the same adapter and HDD that I had before in my T400, and it still works fine there.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

@Protomic.
Not sure if this will help but see the specs here.

@ahsan,
Good point from tripplec, try to search for Windows Partition tools on Google. There are a few good ones. Or you can use a desktop, plug in the HDD then use Windows retail CD to create partition.

  • MSI x48c platinum - does not detect SATA HDDs

I am having some problems with a pc build with motherboard not detecting SATA HDDs (MIS x48c Platinum).
I believe I have exhausted all other avenues, and I would appreciate some help if I have missed something obvious.
(details of other components are listed at end of mail).
When I built pc using these components, and went into BIOS settings, the SATA HDD's were not detected.  I tried changing BIOS settings, but no difference if SATA, AHCI, or IDE settings.
I removed the HDDs and successfully tested them in another machine (also formatted them while had them istalled in other pc).
IDE optial drives are detected.  I have tried to boot with these disconnected to ensure no isues with both IDE and SATA drives connected, but this did not resolve issues.
I have also tried connecting HDD to different onboard SATA ports, and connecting just one drive with no success.
Resetting BIOS defaults, and using clear CMOS reset did not resolve issues either.
Sometimes on boot, it takes a few attempts to boot correctly, and on these occassions I receive an error message "Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default settings, Press any key except "DEL" to enter setup ......."  I haven't tried to set any over clocking.
I read about a number of issues on MSI forum related to SATA drives which were resolved by BIOS upgrade (mobo was shipped with v.7.0 released 20 March 08).  I managed to install an old IDE HDD and flash BIOS, but still no resolution of issues detecting SATA drives (BIOS V.7.2 released 29 July 08).
I've tried everything I can think of at this stage.  Is there anything else I should try, or is there something wrong with this motherboard?
    Spec:
    Motherboard:
    343949 MSI X48C Platinum, X48, Socket-775,
    DDR2/DDR3, ATX, GbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x1
    Other components in build:
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Graphics Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    HDD 2 x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB
    RAM 4GB (2x2GB) GeIL DDR3 1333MHz Value Dual Channel (7-7-7-24) PC3-10660
PSU 700W X-Power ATX SLI PSU
ODD DVD & CDR drives from an old pc - IDE connections.

i just remember     i had once similar problem with a sata driver. the issue is this you can not adjust everything in bios in one go and expect mobo to know about it. what i mean is this for instance you disable the raid then you save it and exit and then when it reboot you go back to bios and reset another another parameter,  you save and exit and on reboot you go back to bios and reset another parameter. i got round the prob that way and it worked and mobo saw the sata HDD. give this a shoot good luck and finally make sure raid is disabled
this is what i would do
1- make sure the jumper setting on your IDE Hdd is correct (Y may have to try this twice as there are two different setting on jumper setting for Master)
    2- connect the sata HDD
    3-click on power
4-go to bios and disable raid save exit
5-on reboot go back to bios
6--on first option click on it then you should see all devices that can be seen by mobo if you do not see sata HDD you have to click on enable for the auto to see the device once it sees the device save and exit. REMEMBER THE JUMPER SETTING  ON IDE HDD CAN CAUSE PROB . SO try the other jumper setting for master, repeat this procedure once more hopefully you get it right

  • Mainboard did not detect SATA1 HDD

My PC using P965 Platinum Series MS-7238 motherboard, Processor Intel Dual Core 3.0 GHz, 128MB Nvidia G-Force PCI VGA, RAM 1024MB Visipro, HDD 80GB Seagate barracuda 7200rpm SATA1, and I have bought it on 2nd of June 2007. during these periode of time (the date I bought till last week) my PC running well.
Last week 21st of may 2009, I found my PC did not detect my HDD. I have installed the HDD to another PC in order to check whether the problem was caused by my HDD or the motherboard. After I tested the HDD by installing it to another PC, it seems the HDD is in good condition and running well.
After that I try to change the powerd cord and SATA1 cord to the HDD with the brand new one to check if the problem caused by the cords and still my motherboard did not detect the HDD. I am very confused what is wrong with my PC. Please help me to solve this problem so that I can use my PC back.

    Hi,
the board has two controllers (ICH8R Primary SATA Controller (SATA Ports 1-6)) and JMicron JMB361 (SATA Port 7)).  Which SATA Port is your hard drive connected to?  The chance that both onboard SATA Controllers or all SATA Ports have been damaged is very low.  Try other SATA ports and see if the situation changes if you connect it to a different controller.
Also, have you cleared CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU to see if that changes anything?

  • Mac mini: OS can not "see" second HDD.

    Hello:
Through a series of unfortunate events I messed up the partition table of my Mac mini server. The OS can not "see" one of the 02 HDDs included in this mini server. Even trying to install the OS from the original DVD fails to see the second HDD, which used to have the boot partition and most of my data.
I boot up using the DVD into Disk Utilities, then I use the Terminal utility:

    /dev/disk1 => 500 GB
    Please see screenshots here:

Shouldn't partition disk0s2 have the label "Apple_HFS Mac OS X Base System" instead?

  • Z77A-GD65 not detecting second 7950 GPU

    Hi all,
Here are my specs, to start with:
    Motherboard: MSI Z77A-GD65
    Processor: Intel i5-3570k
    Memory: 2x 4GB GeIL Black Dragon DDR3 PC3-12800C11
    SSD: Samsung 830 256GB
GPU 1: HIS 7950 Boost Edition 3GB, in the top 16x PCIe slot
GPU 2: VTX3D 7950 3GB, in the second 16x PCIe slot, via a powered PCIe 16x riser card
    PSU: OCZ ZS 750W
    Monitors: 1x BenQ G2420HDBL 1920x1080, 2x Dell 20" 1680x1050
USB devices: Razer Tarantula keyboard, Logitech MX Revolution mouse, Blue Snowball ICE microphone
Since installing the second graphics card, I have been having issues with the system booting, getting as far as 15 on the LED output, before restarting, and repeating over and over, on BIOS A91. I found that if I had none of my monitors turned on, then the system would more reliably boot.
Today, I have updated my BIOS to the AC3 release. This appears to have resolved the reboot loop, I can have all my monitors switched on now - however, it is now not detecting my 2nd graphics card at all!
I have the system fully water cooled, so removing/swapping cards around is going to be very difficult - due to my loop design, I am using the powered 16x riser card.
However, before this is pointed at as being the problem, I was having the reboot loop issue with the previous BIOS when I had the card plugged in directly to the motherboard prior to fitting the water cooling to this second card! The powered riser made no difference, either good or bad.
Any thoughts or suggestions on any settings that I may have missed anywhere after updating the BIOS that would have the effect of disabling my second 7950?

    Quote
would I be right in remembering that there is some setting, somewhere (which I've not found yet) that specifies something about the PCIe slots and which ones are active, ie disabling the 1x slots and giving the PCIe lanes to the 16x slot
There is no setting. The slots are automatically switched depending on the population. If the primary slot is the only physical x16 slots populated it is X16/x0/x0. If the 2nd slot or both is/are populated it is (x8/x8/x0). If the 3rd or all slots is/are populated it is x8/x4/x4.

  • Two WD MyBook Studios in Daisy Chain, Windows 7 not recognizing second HDD

I have two Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition II external drives in a daisy chain. These are the 2TB versions -- one functions as a Time Machine backup for both my MacBook Pro and iMac, and the other stores most of my media. The first drive in the chain, my Time Machine drive, is recognized and accessible through Windows 7, while the second drive is not.
What's odd, however, is that I've been able to access these drives together on a previous installation of Windows, in a similar hardware configuration.
What gives? Any suggestions? Has anyone run into this issue before?
I'm running Windows 7 on a 27" iMac (i5) with all available updates installed.

    Hi,
I found your post whilst researching my options for connecting 2 x My Book Studio II (both are the 4TB version) to my MacMini 2010 running Snow Leopard.
Do you only run Windows 7 on your Mac, or have you had success running Mac Snow Leopard too with your daisy-chain configuration?
The reason behind my question, is that I had some problems in the early days (18 months ago) with daisy-chaining, there was some corruption of data and the lights on the front of one drive indicated an (undocumented) error mode that WD support could not advise what it meant, their only advice was to reformat the drive again, and again (it was tedious.)
I had a unit replaced in the end, however I never had the nerve to go back to a daisy-chain configuration after my initial problems.
WD support advised me to connect one drive with FW800, and the other with USB - something to do with unique ID's.
I now need an additional USB port free, so I am considering daisy chaining the FW800 drives.
I could just try it of course, however the second drive is used to backup the first drive (and is then disconnected) - and I don't want to risk corrupting both drives now that I have 3TB of data.
    Thanks.

If its a SATA-II (3Gb/s) drive, it will probably never work on that board.
VIA VT8237 chipset has known incompatibility issues with SATA 3Gb/s drives, which cannot be fixed. Either try and get hold of a SATA 1.5Gb/s drive, or just use a PATA (IDE) drive instead.
yes bro it is a sata-II 3GB/S drive..
    any other workaround??

    Hi:
If you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the bottom of your notebook, you can make your own Vista installation disk.
    Here's how:
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them an my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-v....
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • Upgrading HDD - Not detected

    Hello!
I bought a 640GB WD Scorpio Blue HDD from NewEgg for myself for Christmas (:-) and a copy of Snow Leopard, all of which going into my 15" Early 2009 MacBook Pro (No SD Slot). Installation (physical) was a breeze except for the fact that the new HDD does not have the supports sticking out like the original factory HDDs. Therefore, it does not fit properly. That was easily fixed with some folded up electrical tape for the time being. Anyway...I ran the installer and selected restore from Time Machine Backup. I had my external HDD already connected, and it detected it. It took a while to detect the size of the backup (310gb - full HDD) and then it wanted me to choose my new HDD. PROBLEM! My HDD did not show up in the list. I then put my old HDD back in and put the new one in an enclosure to see if it would show up that way - no dice. I went into Disk Utility to see if it was there - No dice. No matter what I do, my computer will NOT detect the HDD. Apple Tech Support was no help - they said to call WDC. I thought of formatting the new HDD, but I can't because it is not detected. What should I do? Please help!
    Thanks!
    Ross

    Apple Support can't help you.
Have you looked at the trouble shooting info on the Internet? For example, you need to be certain the jumpers are correctly set (see http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=3656&pcreated=#jumper )
I'm sure that are lots of other possible problem areas. You should contact NewEgg for technical assistance.
I thought of formatting the new HDD, but I can't because it is not detected.
If you ever get it working, this is the FIRST thing you will need to do. It comes formatted for Windows 7

You don't need an OS. The .exe can be flashed in dos too. Create a boot stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.msg1209899#msg1209899) and start the .exe from there.
