T420 + nvidia 4200M questions

My laptop just arrived today and I love it! I got the dedicated graphics card because I thought it would help in Photoshop and other photo/video editing programs. Other than that, I know very little about GPU's. Confusion is added because not only am I dealing with NVIDIA, but also the Intel HD graphics. Here's what I understand (or I think I understand): the NVIDIA is only "activated" during extensive graphics applications while the Intel does most of the work during basic programs. But where do I go for the settings? Intel or NVIDIA? I am assuming NVIDIA....but there, I am at a complete loss as to how to configure it. What are "global settings?" And I've read so much about Optimus technology, yet I don't see it anywhere. And how do I know the GPU is doing work?
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

You have Optimus. It works by default. What it does is essentially that it runs everything off of the iGPU. When a window needs more graphics performance, it will generally figure that out and then almost instantly turn on the nVidia chip run that window (and only the contents of that window) with the nVidia chip. As soon as you close the window, the system goes back to running everything off of the iGPU. Optimus is better than switchable graphics because it switches almost instantly and only runs what you need off of the nVidia card. The very minor downside to Optimus is that is uses a small amount of RAM at all times (about 128MB) if you need the extra RAM you can configure the BIOS to disable Optimus autodetect and then choose the integrated graphics only (slower, better thermals, and battery life) or the nVidia graphics only (faster, more heat, about 50-60% of normal battery life). I think ~128MB less of usable RAM is worth all that you gain from Optimus -- RAM is inexpensive compared to batteries.
Some programs, such as independent games, might not auto detect. For those, I will use the right click --> run with Graphics Processor solution to make them perform better. You can add these programs to the list so that they always run with a specific processor. nVidia's latest drivers include a task bar utility that tells you when the nVidia chip is on, and which window or program is using it. If you were running low on battery, you could right click and run a program only on the integrated to attempt to extend battery life.
The other nice thing about having the nVidia card is that you can drive 3 displays at once. For me, this means the ability to use 2 external monitors and the laptop display at the same time.

    Howdy,
I am looking for an older version of Nvidia drivers, specifically: 8.17.12.7658.  The new version (9620) doesn't allow me to select the Nvidia card for certain applications like VLC, WMP, or Media Player Classic.  That being said, I know the Nvidia card automatically runs everything connected to an external monitor however when not using an external monitor, I was able to set my defaults allowing me to multitask without the Intel card being the sole provider.  The old version allowed you to set each specific application, that is why I need to downgrade.  I've searched on Lenovo Support for old drivers but to no avail.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also in the past, Nvidia drivers were more up to date then Lenovo's however when Nvidia added this feature (not being able to select specific programs, or shading the option to), I jumped back to Lenovo's 7658.  My fault for updating to the latest Lenovo driver.

to add a bit more... if you substitute txt for the exe ( http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83de44ww.txt ) in your url, you can seemingly get the readme file to go along with the driver pack.
    cheers.

  • T420s Nvidia Graphics Card & Express Card Questions

Hello, and thank you for checking out my post.  My apologies for writing a book, but I'm hoping to give as much detail as needed the first go round.
I just received my custom-built T420s (4170-CTO) and have a couple technical questions/concerns about it.  The details of my configuration are located at the bottom of this post.
First off, one of the deciding factors of my purchase was the discrete graphics card.  On the T420s I chose NVIDIA NVS 4200M Optimus Graphics 1GB, Intel Core i7-2620M Processor.  I was thrilled to have more than 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory for my games.  Upon receiving my laptop, though, I ran the Windows Experience Index and saw that the lowest score was the graphics card, which is identified as Intel HD Graphics Family and has 64 MB of dedicated graphics memory.  After my heart started beating again I checked Device Manager and found under Display both Intel HD Graphics Family and NVIDIA NVS 4200M listed as working with up-to-date drivers.  When I configured the laptop online there was no mention of hybrid graphics, so I'm not sure why I have an Intel Graphics card on the machine.  My current laptop that I was looking to replace is a T61p with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics card, and only that NVIDIA card is shown under Device Manager and in the Windows Experience / Performance Information.  Thinking that perhaps disabling the Intel card would cause the NVIDIA card to take over, I disabled that through Device Manager.  My screen went black and after feeling quite stupid I rebooted my computer.  The default Windows Display driver kicked in, allowing me to see well enough to get back to Device Manager and enable the Intel Graphics.  I counted myself lucky that I wasn't stuck with a working computer with a blank screen, but I'm still confused about why the NVIDIA card isn't the only display adapter on the machine, and why it isn't the default/main adapter.  Most importantly, will it be usable to run my games?
My second question is regarding the PCI ExpressCard slot.  My aim for this machine was to have a HDD to store my data (I selected the 320GB 7200 RPM HDD) and a SSD to boot and run my programs from.  Another reason for choosing this machine was the comment on Lenovo's site stating that a user booted his T420s from a solid state drive in the PCI ExpressCard slot, which was exactly was I was looking for.  I need the CD/DVD drive, so I can't put the second hard drive in a caddy.  During configuration I chose the option for an Express Card Slot & 4 in 1 Card Reader & Smart Card Reader.  From what I can tell, the Express Card slot is not connected to the Card Readers and I will not lose use of those ports.  When I opened the computer up to install more RAM, I saw what is labeled in Lenovo's hardware manual as the Express Card slot, apparently empty - which is great!  Now I need to figure out what kind of SSD to look for, and on that I'm kinda lost.
I'm guessing that my ExpressCard slot is 34mm and PCI form factor rather than USB... but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a not-incredibly-educated guess.  I'm also not sure where mSATA comes into play for me, if at all.  Looking at SSDs on sites such as newegg.com, I'm unsure of what form factor to choose - ExpressCard, PCI-E, mSATA, and/or 1.8"?
The tech specs of my configured T420s (copy/pasted from the order status) are as follows.  I hope this means more to you than it does to me.

2nd generation Intel Core processor family PCI Express Conroller - 0101
Whew.  Thanks for making it through my book-long post.  If you can offer advice on either of my questions/concerns I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Lauren

The T420s with Nvidia GPU has two graphics card that can switch on the fly, if you only want the discrete gpu, just go into your bios menu under graphics there is an option to select discrete.
With the Nvidia Optimus (which is what you have), it can switch between Nvidia and Intel GPU depending on your application needs. This will allow you to conserve battery or power.
Expresscard slot 34 mm slot is occupied by the card reader that you ordered.
What you are talking about within the ram slot cover, is the mPCIe slot, which can be occupied by a mSATA drive.

  • T420s-NVIDIA NVS 4200m shows up as Standard VGA

    Hey all,
So I've had this problem for a while now, I know that in my T420s there is a NVIDIA NVS 4200m GPU, but it refuses to recognize that it even exists. I'm running it in NVIDIA Optimus mode, but in Device Manager, all that shows up under the Display Driver are Intel(R) HD Graphics and  another which says Standard VGA Graphics adapter (which can't start due to a 'Code 10')
Why is it that my NVIDIA doesn't show up? How can I get my T420s to recognize and use it over the Intel HD?
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I got my new T420s today with nVidia NVS 4200M and after turning it on, it just showed standard video with 1024x768.
In device manager it showed both standard VGA graphics and NVIDIA NVS 4200M but when I right clicked on the desktop it did not give me an option to choose nVidia, but just standard VGA.
I updated the nVidia graphics driver from here (7 Nov 2011, the one from April 2011 was not enough)
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014142
I installed, restarted and nVidia showed up with all display options
    Problems resolved!

  • T420 Nvidia and T430 Nvidia

    Hi
     quick question...
    1) Should I buy T420 or wait for T430u. What NVIDIA model is it gonna come with (T430u)? Is it worth the wait?
    2) T420 has NVIDIA NVS 4200M Graphics with Optimus Technology, 1GB DDR3 Memory. Can I run Call of Duty Black Ops or MW3?
    Please help
    Thanks a lot!!!

    Hi all
    @ JDay
From what I know, there are customers who wish to have a laptop with business reliability, at the same time having the capability to render 3D objects or play games.
    @ TheDude
Lenovo have IdeaPad Y series as their gaming laptop, with slightly higher end graphics and JBL speakers. (Coming Y580 uses GTX660M). Maybe it's better to get T430 instead of T430u for your case, as thicker machine tends to have better cooling. If performance is more important than portability and you are either running serious 3D model or gaming, W530 would be recommended.
    Have a nice day!

  • [SOLVED] Problems with gnome on T420s (nvidia optimus)

    Hello everyone,
after finally managing to successfully launch a simple x session on my laptop I thought installing gnome would be an easy thing. Unfortunately gnome (or my hardware) does not think the same and so after installing gnome successfully, I fail to execute gdm succesfully
Let me provide some more info (logs etc. below):
configure my system to run gnome as desktop environment
using PRIME to handle both devices (disabling intenal or discrete graphics card is not an option since I need it)
this implies not to use bumblebee - I'm very grateful to the work people invested in working everything but it comes with too many disadvantes regarding stability future updates in my eyes
I appreciate any comment and will provide more infos if needed, I also appreciate everything that will improve my understanding of the follwing (related) topics:

    xorg configuration and debugging

Ok ok update! I now managed to launch gdm by executing it as root...
    su gdm
I have to admit that I'm still quite lost for It doesn't seem to provide anything else than blank screen with cursor and top bar... (so no login and no logout for example) There still seems to be missing a lot...
    Can someone please help out?

  • Switching off a T420s nVidia card from linux ? What ACPI call ?

    Dear all,
I am the very happy owner of a T420s that I mostly use under Linux. Is there any simple way to switch off the nVidia card under Linux (i.e. without deactivating it in the BIOS) ?
The script proposed on https://launchpad.net/~hybrid-graphics-linux does terminate with "success", but does not switch the card off (it however deactivate the USB mouse ...)
As far as I understand, there is a magic string to write in /proc/acpi (when the module acpi_call is loaded) to do the trick, but so far I could not find it anywhere.
I suspect that Lenovo's engineers could tell what is the said string in 5min ...
    Regards,
    Francois

I finally found a script to do this. More details on my web page http://www.idiap.ch/~fleuret/glitches.html

  • Nvidia driver question

I'm using the 61.77 Nvidia drivers with my old Geforce256 (32mb) 3D Prophet card.  However, I'm going to buy a new Nvidia card in the $80 range, probably an FX5200 256 mb.  Don't laugh, I'm just not an avid gamer.
My question is, can I just install the new card and the existing drivers will work, or do I need to reinstall the Nvidia drivers?  What would be the proper way to install this card and uninstall the old (from a drivers perspective - I got no problems physically yanking the old and adding the new card, been there done that).
    Thanks!

Since then, I swapped the FX5200 for a FX5700. Done it the same way, just shutdown, and swapped them out. This time, XP did not even ask for a reboot.
While uninstalling the old card/drivers is more commonly recommended, as Wonkanoby pointed out, the drivers are the same for all GeForce cards, regardless of age. Just need newer versions, for the newer cards.
I think I will try it - I'll just shut down and swap the card, then start up and see if XP can figure it out.  If not, I can work from there.

Deleting the card from device manager *should* uninstall the drivers, but may not get every trace of the older versions that are hiding.
I guess I was just thinking of deleting it from device manager in ADDITION to uninstalling the drivers.  So in other words, I would use Add/Remove to remove the nvidia 61.77 drivers, then delete the Device, then shut down swap cards, start up and reinstall the 61.77 drivers.   But, I'll try the simple approach first.
    Thanks for your help everyone.

  • CS5 MPE nVIDIA Card Question

I've seen the graphic card list recommended for the Mercury Playback Engine.  Everyone wants to know if their card will work.  The GTX285 made the list. I have a GTX280.  Do I get CS5 and cross my fingers?  Some tech evauluation would be great.. for instance.. "don't even try it cause it will it crash and burn" or  "it will work OK but you'll have a 15% reduction in performance."

Grin... I am sort of in the same "wait and see" group... except mine question is "will MPE offer any benefit to non-HD work"?
If an nVidia 285 at $400 does nothing more for SD-to-DVD over a $100 ATI... I will just buy an ATI and save $300
If the 285 does offer rendering benefits for SD only editing... I have to weigh the cost-benefit for me
So... wait and see (read) when CS5 is released

  • NVIDIA VIVO questions. Please help!

I've searched the NVIDIA website, the MSI website, and around the web and haven't been able to find the info I've been looking for about VIVO.  I can't believe that a feature advertised by both NVIDIA and MSI has no documentation at all.
So I'm wondering if anyone out there with an MSI GeForce card with VIVO could answer some questions for me, regarding the video-in features.  Is there included software used to capture video?  Is it possible using the VIVO connection to capture video in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 or another NLE???  What formats can video be captured to: DV AVI, uncompressed AVI, or MPEG-2?
I've got a job to convert several VHS tapes to DVD, and I planned on using my Pinnacle MovieBox DV (a breakout box connected via FireWire).  It's always been a hunk-of-junk, but now it won't cooperate at all.  It continuously locks up after capturing only 2 minutes of video.  It's about to be slammed against the wall.
I had planned on purchasing an MSI 7800GTX in the future, but if VIVO does the things I need it to then I'd purchase one now.  Otherwise, I'll have to look into another A/V box.
So if anyone has any experience with VIVO on a GeForce (preferably MSI-branded), please let me know immediately!!!  Otherwise, if anyone knows of a good A/V breakout box please let me know.  I only paid $150 for my MovieBox DV, but it's caused nothing but problems.

In theory all you need are these drivers and some WDM compatible capture software (eg. WindowsMovieMaker/iuVCR/VirtualVCR/VirtualDub/etc). Good luck.

  • NVidia Quaddro questions (PPro CS5)

Couple questions about using the Mercury Playback Engine in PPro CS5...
    1) Do you only need an FX 4800 or higher if you plan to edit 4k footage? For standard HD editing, can you make do with something a lot cheaper? (if so, what?)
    2) I have a triple-screen setup, and do gaming as well, so I don't want to throw out my gaming card. Will Premiere detect and use the Quaddro if it's used as a secondary card? Also, will triple-screen still work?
    Thanks!

  • How do u creat BIOS recovery disk + nvidia firewall question.

    WooooHOoOOO....
after re-formating a dozen times, busted SCSI config, messed up driver install, I FINALLY GOT this board working at 100%!!!
This mobo powered through my entire DOOM 3 Odyssey to Hell NON-STOP without a SINGLE CRASH!! Definitely a good testament to this board's quality.
Now for the final few noob question, how do I create a bios recovery disk just in case things happened.
lastly... how do you properly setup the NV Firewall? After enabling it, none of the other computers in my network can see this computer with the MSI Board, so file and printer sharing all stops when the firewall is enabled.
Anyone here has a walkthrough on the firewall?
ONCE AGAIN...thanks to all who helped me!!!

i havent got my nvidia firewall to work imma wait until they release better drivers for it but for creating the bios recovery disk i think if u use msi's live update it will ask u if u want to create one or not.

  • T420 nvidia GPU driver crash

    Hi all.
I have an annoing issue with my t420's gpu. Driver seems to crash very often when i use gpu-hungry apps. i get a message like this "nvidia kernel driver has stopped responding but was recovered'.  Maybe anoyone has the same problem and solved it?
System is windows 8 64bit with the latest updates and video drivers.

Lock PCI/AGP to 66/33, that's the first thing.
2nd thing, get a better RAM.
3rd thing, get a better PSU.

  • T420 dual monitors question?

I have a T420 (Intel Graphics Intergrated) and two Dell U2413 monitors. Can someone tell me if it's possible to connect two displays to the laptop through display port. I only want to run the monitors in dual mode, I'm not worried about using the laptop LCD. Also is there a guide on what cables I need two use? I've tried rigging everything up (I'm not using a dock) but I can't seem to get things working properly?

Not like the later 27" models, because the 2008 iMac's Mini-DVI output port does not support input.

Unfortunately you will have to use ScreenRecyler or something like that.

  • [Solved] Nvidia-ck question

    Hi.
I'm currently running the linux-ck, and nvidia-ck, packages from Graysky's repo.
When I go to update my total system, I get two instances of nvidia to upgrade.
Is there any way to remove the dependencies on the opencl-nvidia package, and just use the nvidia-ck?
    EDIT:
Upgraded around the one package that refuse to uninstall, re-logged in, and successfully uninstalled said package.

    Apologies...
What I originally had going was the default Arch kernel, and the non-free Nvidia drivers installed. I did some reading on the BF scheduler, and decide your prebuilt kernel, headers, and nvidia packages would be the most optimal. My PC is too old to compile a kernel every update...
When I was comfortable with the results, I uninstalled the linux, and linux-headers. If I tried to uninstall the opncl-nvidia package, all of my nvidia dependant packages prevented it, and this was despite myself already running your ck kernel+nvidia setup.
I'm not sure why, but after I manually upgraded all the packages shown by 'pacman -Syu' with the exception of opencl-nvidia, I was then able to uninstall it just fine after a logout/login.
