T420 unable to use extended battery slice

It is rather disconcerting to have the laptop stop and go blank when the battery life indicator says there is more than 6 hours of life left.
My T420 has a 55+ main and 27++ extended battery.  If it is using the main battery for power, when the main battery reaches 0%, it will fail to switch to the extended battery and die.  It doesn't just shut down, it stops.  Windows doesn't like this.  If the machine is using the extended battery for power, it can successfully switch to the main battery when the extended battery reaches 0%.
There appears to be no "approved" way to force the laptop to use the extended battery first.  I've only had this laptop a couple of weeks, but in my experimentation, the laptop preferentially uses the battery with the lowest percentage first.
For normal use, I've programmed the extended battery charge profile to stop at 95%, This will get the laptop started on the right battery when both are connected, but doesn't help if I'm out and about using the main battery and want to extend by adding the extended battery.
The only method I've found to force the laptop to use the extended battery when the main battery is at lower capacity is to just remove the main battery.  Of course, to do this, I have to either shutdown the laptop or put it in hibernate.  Then, remove the main battery and attach the extended battery.  Restart the laptop.  So far, I haven't had any problems with this method. The laptop is perfectly happy with just the 27++ battery attached.  But if I'm going to go switching batteries out, I might as well just have an extra 55++ lying around and dispense with the 27++.
It would be nice if Lenovo could provide instructions or a software fix that would allow me to tell the laptop to preferentially use the extended battery whenever it is available.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

A few days ago, when it was supposed to switch over, it just stopped.  No standby, shutdown, or hibernation.  Then, upon restart, Windows complained about being shutdown improperly.  I presume that is what you call a hard off.  At that time, I had left the computer on and open and walked away, expecting it to sleep on its own.  The main battery was untouched and had 98% of capacity left when I restarted Windows.
I managed to get it to discharge totally again last night.  It made the switch correctly again.  Then, I charged up just enough to run with the extended battery for half an hour.  That time, it made the switch correctly again.  Both times, I was watching a video.
I suspect that the last time it didn't make the switch, I may not have had the main battery locked.  If the main battery lock functions as a switch just like the one on the extended battery that may be the issue.
I'm glad you are adding that information to the power manager.  The power manager clearly knows there is a battery attached, any warning it could give that the switch configuration is not optimal would be most helpful.  (you know, to help the id10t user like me)
If you are updating Power Manager, I have a suggestion. Or two.
I noticed that the percentage remaining is calculated on the total capacity of both batteries.  This affects the power alarms.  When one battery is connected, 5% of the battery capacity is at one value of available watt-hours, but when two batteries are connected, 5% is a different value of available watt-hours.  Is my assessment correct?  Is there any way to make the behavior normalized regardless of the battery configuration?  Since there are so many battery configurations, is % even the right measure for the alarms, wouldn't we rather use minutes?  Of course, I realize that % is always a true number, but minutes varies depending on load, so maybe minutes is a bad idea.
The taskbar icon.  Is there a way to get the tooltip to contain info about both batteries? As separated information?
The computer is fully charged right now, my next opportunity to test one more hypothesis is several days away.  My hypothesis has to do with the level of interaction I'm having with the computer at the time of the switch.  I've noticed that every time it failed to switch over, I was not actively involved (i.e. I walked away or had the computer doing something while I was doing something else).  Every time it successfully switched, I was either watching a movie or was intermittently using the computer (sleep, unsleep, sleep, ...)  Of course, this could all be a red herring, but since it seems to be successfully switching from extended to main battery right now, I can test this hypothesis in 8 or so hours of use. ( about three days).

    What are cases that work with the Droid 2 using the extended battery? I have the blue plastic one that has the raised back to fit the extra space for the extended battery, but i feel it makes the phone look cheap. On the website, the black graphite cover says it fits the extended battery. Any advice?

    Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

  • Forum Mods, Please make this a sticky: BlackBerry PlayBook battery power charge, discharge characteristics, and guidance on extending battery life

    BlackBerry PlayBook battery power charge, discharge characteristics, and guidance on extending battery life
    KB27705
    Overview
    The BlackBerry PlayBook may come to a power state where it is unable to power on; a Yellow LED may flash in a sequence of 5 flashes, the BlackBerry PlayBook may boot up to the BlackBerry PlayBook Logo and then power off, may not power on at all.
    Discharge behavior under normal use:
    Under normal active use, a battery drained to 10% will cause the device to prompt the BlackBerry PlayBook user (notification and audible beep)
    Without connecting a charger the device will automatically shut down at 3.53V (0%)
    Pressing the power button may allow successful boot, but it will turn off again very quickly
    Discharge behavior under no use:
    A device left unused but in ‘Stand By’ will warn the BlackBerry PlayBook user at 10% (notification and audible beep)
    The warning may not be noticed and the device will go back to ‘Stand By’
    Letting the device drain in standby mode drains the battery slower, but more completely
    Device will still shut off at 3.53V (0%), but it less likely to successfully boot afterwards
    Discharge behavior under 3.53V (0%):
    If the device is left to shutoff, the battery will continue to drain below 3.53V due to quiescent current draw from the motherboard and the battery fuel gauge
    With the battery between 2.7V-3.53V, pressing the power button causes the LED to flash a pattern (1 solid red light followed by 5 yellow blinks)  to indicate low battery (PlayBook Tablet OS version 1.0.5, and above)
    Below 2.7V there is no activity, or LED pattern displayed
    Charge Behaviour:
    The provided charger should be used to charge the device. The optional 12 volt rapid charger is may reduce charging times
    to approximately 3 to 4 hrs. Standard Blackberry smartphone chargers, other AC adapter USB chargers, or computer USB ports
    are not recommended for the sole purpose of charging the PlayBook as with these methods it may take more that 12 hours to
    charge the BlackBerry Playbook.
    If the battery voltage is below 3.53V(0%) then the charging behaviour is dependent on the software version.  The charging code will limit the charging current to under 400 milliamps, during which time, it may take an hour to reach 3.53 Volts. Once the battery voltage rises past 3.53 volts, then "high-rate" charging will start. If, after charging the Tablet for 4 to 6 hours still does not result in LED activity, attempt to force power on the BlackBerry Playbook by pressing and holding only the Power Button for only 20 seconds.
    Prior to BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.5:
    A BlackBerry PlayBook will never charge while powered off in BlackBerry Tablet OS versions prior to 1.0.5.
    The device will show a red light when the charger is connected and then nothing more
    Repeated connection of the charger can recover the device in some instances.
    Once the battery voltage rises above 3.53V the system will boot and the UI will show charging
    Starting in BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.5:
    The device will show a solid red LED, followed by a solid yellow LED as the device boots into charging mode.  This is followed by a yellow pulsating LED indicating charging in progress.
    The time span between the red and yellow lights can be as long as 45 seconds as the device boots into charging mode.
    Once the yellow LED illuminates, the device can be started, but it is advisable to let it charge for at least 3.5 hours to achieve a sufficient charge.
    The device will show a solid green LED once the device is fully charged.
    Starting in BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0.1:
    Once the yellow LED begins pulsating indicating charging mode, if the BlackBerry PlayBook is disconnected from the charger, the following graphic will be displayed on the screen, indicating charging is not complete, and to reconnect the power source. The graphic will be displayed for 20 seconds before the BlackBerry® PlayBook powers off if the power source is not reconnected. The same graphic will also be displayed if the BlackBerry PlayBook is turned on and there is not sufficient power to perform the boot process.
    If the BlackBerry PlayBook is plugged into a power source, and the power button is pressed to power on the device, the following graphic will be displayed if there is not sufficient power to perform the boot process. If this occurs, the BlackBerry PlayBook should be left plugged in to gain enough charge to boot.

    With the upgrade to PlayBook OS 2.1.0.1032 the following message may be displayed when connecting the Playbook to a PC using the micro-USB cable:
    Unable to charge battery with connected source
    This message is displayed because the voltage provided is insufficient for charging. The USB voltage is limited to 384mA even if the maximum tolerance is 500mA. The voltage is limited to 384mA by design to avoid violating the USB specification which states USB devices cannot draw more than 500mA from the USB port.

  • Zbook 14 Extended battery fit with docking stations

    I have a zbook 14 and extended battery CM03XL and also  have the ultraslim docking station that you slide the connector that slides and locks into the notebook so the extended battery makes it impossible to use the docking station (the 3 cell battery lasts me 1.5 hours max w/ heavy use so I always need the battery slice with me and charged).
    Is there an HP docking station I can use with this zbook 14 with the extended battery connected?

    Hello, @panoulix
    To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since the HP ZBook 17 Mobile Workstation is a commercial product. You can do this at Notebook - HP ProBook, ZBook, EliteBook, Compaq, Slate/Tablet PC, Armada, LTE.
    The support page for your product may be helpful in the meantime:
    HP ZBook 17 Mobile Workstation.
    I hope this helps!
    Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • T420 can't use dual DVI connected monitors

    I have a T420 connected to The ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 90W (433810U* - United States), DVI port 1 connected to monitor and VGA connected to second monitor using extended desktop.  This configuration works fine but when I hook up both DVI ports to my monitors only one of the screens work and in the Intel Graphics  and Media Control Panel only shows one monitor. I have 2 different cables 1 DVI-D dual-link and 1 DVI-D single link, the dual-link works with the VGA setup but with the 2 DVI connections only the monitor with the single link cable works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Itunes Match won't upload. I get error stating there was an error in the itunes store, please try again. I have tried again everyday for the last month and am still unable to use.  Any ideas on why Match can't complete the 1st step of the process (Gathering information about your Itunes library)?

    For the last few weeks, the iTunes store has been displayed with empty graphic rectangles (with a blue box containing a white question mark centered in the rectangles), bits of text, and some buttons. The page extends quite a ways, including what I assume would be all the links to all the music...
    If all you are trying to do is buy music, you can easily buy MP3s at any online music download store (e.g. amazon.com) and add them to your iTunes library.

  • Error.Unable to use mx:CustomDateTimeAxis to implement the component.

    Hello.
    I have a modified class DateTimeAxis to show data labels in my own format:
    package
         import mx.charts.DateTimeAxis;
         public class CustomDateTimeAxis extends mx.charts.DateTimeAxis
              public function CustomDateTimeAxis()
                   super();
              override protected function formatDays(d:Date, previousValue:Date, axis:DateTimeAxis):String
                   return d["date"];
    In main application:
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml">
    <mx:horizontalAxis>
         <mx:CustomDateTimeAxis id="xAxis" dataUnits="days" parseFunction="myParseFunction"/>
    </mx:horizontalAxis>
    The compiler produces an error:
    "Unable to use <mx:CustomDateTimeAxis> to implement the component."
    Can you help me. Thank you.

    The issue is very clear: you are using the wrong XML namespace to add your component. The mx namespace is defined for the Flex SDK, so unless you have a custom build of it then your component isn't in there.

  • How about we lobby Verizon/HTC for a car dock that can accommodate the extended battery?!

    I had picked up my Thunderbolt on release day and a few days later opted to purchase an extended battery (Verizon/HTC brand 2750mAh).  Later in the week, I wanted to purchase the Thunderbolt specific car-dock only to find out that it will only fit the HTC Thunderbolts using the standard battery.  I am not about to swap out my battery every time I get into and out of my vehicle (which is often) and I will not give up the extended battery life.
    Hey Verizon?!  Since the stock battery's life is somewhat weak, and so many will end up purchasing an extended battery, how about you re-design a windshield mount, so that those of us with the larger capacity batteries can have a little automotive dock love?!
    Regards,
    Spence

    It doesn't need to be a seperate product so much s a re-design of the existing one with a cavity across the back.
    ProClipUSA markets phone holders with extended batteries in mind, and they even integrate the magnetic trigger to place the phone into "nav mode".  I guess I stick with the universal mount that I have ordered via eBay until ProClipUSA announces that their product is up for sale.

  • Seidio Case for Extended Battery - Good Price

    Well, I decided to bite the bullet and get the extended battery.   I was getting about a full day on the regular battery using 3G and, if today is any indication, I will get about a full day on the extended battery using 4G, which I left it on today.  That being said, I guess it was a good buy because I'm going to assume I can get close to 2 full days of use while on 3G...and only use 4G when I'm downloading or possibly watching videos or movies (if we ever get Netflix access!). (Up Time is 13:52, Awake Time is 4:24, and battery is at 23%)
    So, now I need a new case to accommodate the extended battery..  After doing a lot of surfing and reading, I ended up purchasing the Seidio Active case...seems like a winner for me and I'll post a review when I get it.
    As an FYI to anyone who is interested, I found the best price on this case at http://www.cellpower.com.  The customer service was excellent before my purchase...very quick to respond to my emails...and I even waited until they got the case in stock before ordering.  A very good experience and the best price I could find online!

    As a follow-up to my original post...and if it helps anyone else...
    I did receive my Active Extended case a week or so ago.  It fits like a glove and is very snug in the holster (I bought the Active Extended Combo).  I am surprised at how smooth the case feels...almost like it could slip out of my hand...especially with how bulky the phone seems with the extended battery. Maybe it just needs a little time to break in.
    Since I already had the extended case, I decided to buy the regular Seidio Active case to use with the standard battery.  To be honest, I much prefer the phone this way than with the extended battery.  No longer do I feel like I'm carrying a brick in my hand and I think I can live with 3G so my battery lasts longer.  I hope the upcoming "update/fix" helps with battery life so I can just use the phone this way all the time...we'll see.
    The extended battery and Seidiio extended case will be kept aside and used on days when I know I won't have easy access to a charger...like being in meetings all day...so I guess it was worth spending the money to have them...just wish I didn't have to spend it.
    As with the extended case, I ordered it through http://www.cellpower.com - another great experience.  And, the regular Seidio case fits the holster that came with the extended case...a nice little plus!
    Hope this helps!

  • When is the extended battery for the phone going to be available again?

    Seriously, yesterday I found myself going from Verizon Store to Verizon Store looking for the extended battery for the trophy in my area because it has been sold out on this site for at least a month, if not more, as I've started to become dissatisfied lately with the battery life on my trophy (I've been using it more lately because there are a lot more apps available now then there were at launch).  I had no luck, and as HTC doesn't seem to stock parts for the US Trophy on their web store, nor does amazon or anyone else (There aren't even any official ones on eBay right now) and I don't trust 3rd party batteries (I had a horrible experience with a 3rd party battery bought for an old blackberry on eBay this one time), is the Extended Battery EVER going to be in stock again?  Thank you!
    I'm talking about this one:

    Nevermind, I can't believe I'm answering myself.
    It seems to be available in the "Accessory Outlet Store" for a major discount ($25) here at Verizon Wireless.  I guess the $30 off the original retail price is worth the trouble I've had for some time.  But still, why doesn't anyone online or people in the stores know this?

  • Extended battery for Portege R100 in the UK

    Hello,
    Hopefully the subject pretty much covers things but...
    I have read that the R100 in America comes with an extended battery and was wondering if it is possible to buy one in the UK. I can't find anything online.
    Also does the Portege R100 boot from USB at all?
    Many Thanks

    This high capacity battery has part number PA3155U-1BRL. I don't have time to search it on Google but use this number in Google UK and I hope you will find some online store where you can order it.
    About USB boot I cannot say much but when the notebook starts under Toshiba welcome screen you should see small symbols with all bootable devices. Check if USB is there.
    Do you want to use USB external CD-Rom?
