T420 Wearing System Board Insulation in Battery Compartment

From many insertions and removals of batteries, the insulation on the system board of my T420 has begun to wear under the battery (you can see it under the alignment tongue in the following photo).  The wear is a bit more pronounced than visible in the photo.
Questions:
a)Is there anything of significance under the insulation (any circuit board components or traces)?  Why is the insulation there?
b)If I finally wear through the insulation, are there any special electrical properties where I just can't patch it with clear laminating material (non-conductive) or something like this?
c)Does Lenovo sell this insulation as a spare part (I doubt it)?  (And even so, I'd hate to tear the computer apart to replace it--this would take me a good 8 hours.)
d)Anything else I should know?
Thanks, Dave Ashley

I spoke to Apple Australia who said it was not uncommon, even though AppleCare (in India) had said it was not something they had heard of and that I should speak to Customer Relations.
The repair person at the second Apple Store then advised me that the logic board serial no on some machines is in fact the factory's serial no, not Apple's, and therefore it is normal. There is confusion, though, since many newer machines have eg iBooks have Apple's serial no under the key pad.

  • Serial No Mismatch - logic board and battery compartment

    Hi,
I ordered a 1GHz G4 Titanium Powerbook as soon as the first SuperDrive model was announced in Nov, 2002, without any add-ons. I received it in early December, 2002. I have just discovered that the serial number on the logic board (next to the memory bays) is completely different to the serial number in the battery compartment. The serial number in the battery compartment is the same as on the box and as reported by 'About this Mac'. I discovered this the first time I ever took the machine in for service - random system crashes/software failure/occasional panics when booting (not fixed by new RAM).
Does anyone know how this serial number mismatch could possibly happen on a brand new model that came from Apple via an AppleCentre?

It is very important that you post the product name or product number of your notebook and the version of the installed BIOS here in your thread.
    How to identify your notebook.
Remove the battery and look in the compartment where the battery was installed. You should see a printed part number and a product name. Please post one or both of them (with all alphanumeric characters here).
It also helps if you post the country of purchase
I will pass that information to an internal HP contact as soon as you post it to see if we can get that resolved for you.

  • IPhone5 bad system board

Yesterday my i5 was at 40% and i decided to plug it in which i noticed it wasnt charging so i rebooted the phone but it wouldnt power back on. I did a handful of hard resets and finally got the screen to show the 'plug in to charge' icon. Im thinking it was at 40% how can it be dead. I plugged it in and wouldnt charge. Tried several cables that worked on the ipad and still wouldnt work with the i5. So i took it in to a local phone repair which they stuck a new battery in and the phone booted but would not charge. They replaced the charge port and still wouldnt charge so they deemed it unrepairable and something wrong with the system board. This phone was bought in Oct 2012 so its about 1.5 yr old. Will apple fix this? whats the procedure on this since its out of warranty?

  • T400 System board issues

Has anyone else been having issue with the T400 and the System Board.  I have had 5 now that stop booting.  All you get is the power light, battery light and the plug light when plugged in.  Hit the power and nothing comes up.  I tried removing the battery and same thing minus the battery light.

I am also facing the same problem. Looks like Lenovo is loosing it credibility and integrity, it previous used to have, especially for Thinkpads.
I am already living with WiFi problem for my T400. Now this System board issue. Really tech support also not good at all.

  • T30 system board replacement

I have a T30 type 2366-86U that I believe has a bad system board (plug in the new charger and the only thing that lights up is the battery indicator- plus I can smell the plastic getting hot- pretty sure its the board) The tag says 236-86U. I can get a replacement real cheap off one of those bid sites but its a 2366-FBU. How interchangeable are the boards? I've been through the KB and read the HMM but there isn't any information about the antiques I'm working with! Anyone know if the two boards (or any other 2366 model) will fit in the machine? Thanks

The board from FBU is actually a better one, type II which supports CPUs over 2.0 Ghz. Go for it.
    Good luck.

  • Broken System Board. Repair Possible?

Nokia 5233 system board got broken accidentally. The pin on the board for the battery is broken and that edge of the board is slightly damaged. Nokia care says repair's not possible. Please check the photoes, I think it's possible to repair. It's been only 4 months of the purchase, I really want it repaired. Tell me, if it's really impossible to repair. Or it's gonna cost a lot. Then how much it's gonna cost.

If Nokia say it can't be repaired and is scrap, then you've got nothing to lose by trying to repair it. Do you have the piece of board that was broken off? If you do, the Superglue is your friend. The with a very fine soldering iron, lots of light and a big magnifying glass, solder the pin back on. Just be careful though. When Superglue gets hot it gives off Cyanide fumes so don't breath in.
Why would this discussion be forbiddden? The phone is scrap although quite what he was doing to break it in the first place is a different matter.

  • T400 System Board FRU location

    Hi there,
I kind of sip over a little coffee over my laptop and now it beeps : 1-3-3-1 which means : either the DIMM or the System board is over.
I doubt it is the DIMM, so it must be the system board. I started dissassamble the rack, however it seems a tough job to find the FRU of the system board.
It is NOT under the main battery, and NOT under the DIMM, So, where is it ?
Parts lookup of lenovo doesnt give any help about my S/N + ModelNr
Any help will be appreciateted .
PS I dissassembled it just before the fan assembly...

  • Sparc 20, hostid and system boards

I have a Sparc 20 that was being used as a license server. The SCSI controller on the system board does not recognise disk drives anymore. I am trying to persuade Engineering to re-license the software for another machine/hostid, but I know they are going to balk. My questions:
    1) Does anyone sell Sparc 20 system boards? I poked around on a couple of sites with no luck.
    2) Can the chip that holds the hostid on a Sparc 20 be moved to an Ultra 5 or an Ultra 250 without letting the smoke out? I don't have any other pre-Ultra Sparc machines left that are not in service.
Email is a good way of getting in touch with me, and since I do not know if these forums have had a problem with email address scraping, and I can't remember how I set this account up, here is my email address with some precautions. My first name is doug, follow that with a period, then my last name, caviness. I work for JDSU, and we are a .com.
Of course if everyone says it can't be done, then that helps the re-licensing case. Provided the software vendor is still in business.

    Hello Doug,
<i>I am trying to persuade Engineering to re-license the software for another machine/hostid, but I know they are going to balk. My questions:
    1) Does anyone sell Sparc 20 system boards? I poked around on a couple of sites with no luck.</i>
A company that sells memory <b>still</b> lists (refurbished, 90-day warranty) SPARCstation 20 system boards as a spare part (about $ 30 plus shipping). Have you tried eBay ?
Usually a license is bound to a class of machine (regarding performance) <u>and</u> the HOSTID.
In your case the machine is used as a license server and not running the application itself.
<i>2) Can the chip that holds the hostid on a Sparc 20 be moved to an Ultra 5 or an Ultra 250 without letting the smoke out? I don't have any other pre-Ultra Sparc machines left that are not in service.</i>
The SPARCstation 20 uses a 48T18 chip, while the U5/E250 uses a 48T59 chip. Both types have 28 pins and are 8Kx8, but I don't think these types are interchangable (the 48T59 has 70ns access time while the 48T18 has "only" 150ns).
But you can try to reprogram the HOSTID in the Ultra system.
As Martin already mentioned the U5/E250 have a machine-type 8x (usually 80) while the SPARCstation 20 has 72. The machine-type is part of the HOSTID. Maybe the system uses this information to select the correct kernel.
I would recommend that you apply for a new license. The battery in the NVRAM has "Consumption Life" of about 10 years and getting a <b>new</b> chip of this type might be tough in the future (maybe already today).
Due to a bug in the forums software, notification of replies doesn't work (anymore). If you don't return to the forum, you will never know that you got answers ....

  • System boards in 15" WS, 14" WS and 14" 4x3 T61p

    Hello:
Just wondered if anyone can confirm thst the system boards from the 15" and the two 14" T61p models are the same.  Well, yes, I know they aren't, as the 15" has the 256mb GPU and the 14" have the 128mb GPU.  But the part numbers in the System Service Parts listing appears to include the same part numbers for the 6xxx (15"WS), 7xxx (14"WS) and 8xxx (14" 4x3) series.  (I'm trying to fugure our FRUs for a 14" 4x3 T61p).

  • Almost 1 month and still no system board replacement

Has anyone else had any probelms getting a replacement system board for a T420S?  I have been waiting for a tech to come out on a three week old laptop to replace a bad system board and still am awaiting a backordered part.

    duplicitis,
Sorry to hear that you are delayed on parts. Calkenneth is offering fair advice -  If you purchased from Lenovo directly in the US, and the failure is within the first 21 days you could get the system replaced as a DOA.  Call your sales rep and you will need to provide the service case number.
We can also escalate your service case.  Would you send me a PM with your contact info and service case number?
Will try to move this along for you.
    Thanks for speaking up,

  • HT3050 where can I buy a battery compartment (screw in) cover for the 2007 apple wireless keyboard?

I need to find a (screw in type) battery compartment cover for this 2007 apple wireless keyboard.
The cover for the 2009 version does not work.  Even though it is similar--the three battery system requires a different cover.  Where can I possible get one of these parts?

Contact Apple to see if they can obtain one (Apple store would be the best bet).

  • How can you brand a serial number onto the system board?

I just replaced a system board and need to brand it with the appropriate serial number.  How do I accomplish that?  I have software to run when I do that with Dells or Lenovos.  How can I do it with an HP?

    Hi:
You cannot tattoo a HP notebook. It has to be done by an authorized HP tech service center where they have a DMI tool for that which is not available to the public.
You can tattoo some HP business desktops with this software, link below. It might work on HP consumer desktops but I don't know since I have never tried it on one.
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12...
This program makes a bootable floppy disk, and cannot be installed via any other method than a FDD or USB FDD.
It works on many other HP business desktops other than those listed. It has been used successfully in PC's up to a couple years old.

  • Z77A-GD65 power issue/bad system board?

Looking for advice. I am afraid its a bad board, but some symptoms point at power which also makes no sense.
This is what the WHOLE system should look like.
    MSI Z77A-GD65 system board
    Intel 3770K 3.5Ghz
    Anted Kuhler H20 620
    G.Skills RipJaws 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL (on the test list)
Asus nVidia GTX 680 video card
    OCX Vertex 3 256MB SSD
    Seagate 500GB data drive
    Razer Lycosa Keyboard
    Razer DeathAdder Mouse
Antec Sonata IV case with Neo ECO 620W power supply
It seems to me that 620W should be more than enough. According to my calculations thats roughly 330W of power draw against a 620W powersupply.
I am not currently over clocking.
So what the system does look like is:
If I connect the 500GB drive then windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I place all four sticks of RAM in the system windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I leave the 500GB standard sata drive off and only use 3 sticks of RAM... well we get a solid system and I am writing this message on it.
3 sticks of ram appear to work in any 3 slots and allow the system to boot, except 1,3,4. That combo also resulted in the reboots at the windows logo.
I first thought it was RAM, originally I was using Corsair Vengeance. I saw some posts here about people having the same problem, and noted that the Corsiar RAM was not tested and switch to a the tested G.Skill instead.
Any ideas? It does not completely seem like a System board issue, but it certainly should not be power. All heat levels are well within normal and as I said the system works great if I leave off the drive and one stick of RAM.
    Thanks guys....

System torn down, and put back together. (Found out I was out of Thrermal Compound, so I had to run to the store to get some.)
No long leads, only 9 stand offs matching each mount point on the systemboard.
Back together... problem is the exact same.
However, back to the hard drive issue. I decided to play with that since I was getting no where with 4 sticks of RAM.
What I have discovered is that with NO sata cable connecting the drive to the system board, if I try to power the two 250GB standard sata drives the system reboots just as the Windows logo should come up.
The fact that this behavior is so close to the RAM behavior... I am back to thinking its a power issue, though system board is still a chance... its just easier to buy a new better power supply than the Antec Neo Power 620 that came with the case. (I have not ever had a problem with Antec before, and will likely just buy one of their higher end power supplies to replace it, but I think I will try it next, just in case.)
I am not seeing any strange behavior power wise as far as any monitor shows... but connecting power to a sata drive that is NOT connected with a sata cable and causing a reboot just screams power at me.
Anymore thoughts today. In the mean time off to play Secret World with just the SSD and two sticks of RAM, which still runs rock solid.
