T420 won't boot with 2x4GB RAM (two identical RAM)

Hi all,
I am experiencing a weird issue that I'm hoping you'll be able to help me with.
My T420 came with 1x4GB of ram (underneath the keyboard) and I wanted to upgrade to 2x4GB RAM so I bought exactly the same RAM again.
Both RAMs work fine by themselves, in the bay under the keyboard as well as in the bay underneath the laptop. Both RAM were tested individually in both RAM slots. The laptop works just fine with either of the RAM individually in either of the RAM slots.
BUT if I put them both in at the same time, the T420 won't boot. It switches on (screen stays black) and instantly switches back off. Without pushing any button, the T420 will then switch itself on again about 3-5 seconds later. This process is repeated indefinitely. I don't even get to see the ThinkPad security screen where you can access BIOS. I switched the RAM around in the slots but this didn't resolve the issue either.
I have never had anything like that before. Does anyone have an idea on how to solve this problem?
Thank you very much in advance.
Regards
Lippasti

Has seriously no one ever had this issue? There must be a solution to this since I can rule out that either one of the RAM or the RAM slots is damages since each RAM works fine in each slot separately. I'm only experiencing this issue if I put them in simultaniously.
Is there possibly any BIOS settings which I need to adjust prior to installing the second RAM?
Not that I think it matters since I can't even boot it to the Windows screen but here are some specs. I am using a Kingston 512GB SSD and the other specs are:
Here's the RAM I am using.

  • T420 won't boot with new Samsung 840 Pro SSD

    Hi all
I seem to have a failed brand new SSD. Before I RMA it, please help me spot my stupid mistake
I've just used Samsung data migration to copy my C drive to a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD as usual.
I went into device driver, and set the SSD to cache writes, so the SSD was working then.
I removed the 320GB SSD, installed the SSD and rebooted.
After the BIOS flash screen, the system halts with a funny symbol on the screen and a flashing cursor.
It responds to Ctrl Alt Del. but doesn't get as far as testing the DVD drive.
After replacing the SSD with the HDD and rebooting, all is fine again ...
The BIOS shows AHCI mode, and the SSD and contents (in a USB3 drive caddy) are visible and readable.
I can't use Samsung SSD magician because it won't see the SSD over USB (clever!), so can't work out how to upgrade firmware.
This is an i5, 8GB, 320GB machine with 1600x900 screen, with XP Pro 64-bit.
What gives?? Others here have posted with working 840 Pros in a T420, so I think it's compatible.
Could this be a SATA2/SATA3 thing or AHCI? I can't see any SATA2/3 control in the BIOS - does it just auto-negotiate?
Most grateful for any suggestions and thanks in advance

    Hi woothoot,
I'm not familiar with the Samsung data migration tool.  Is it actually cloning the drive, or just copying files and settings?
With ThinkPads, it is usually recommended to have the target drive installed in the laptop and the source on the external connection.  Doing it the other way sometimes results in a non-booting drive.
Can you rearrange things so that you do the clone op with the SSD installed in the T420?

  • Macbook pro won't boot with two new 4GB RAM sticks.

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro. It came with two 2GB RAM sticks. After downloading Lion, my computer started to get sluggish so I thought I would upgrade the ram. I bought two 4GB Corsair RAM sticks and tried to install them. My computer will boot up if I install one of the new 4GB sticks and leave an old 2GB stick; but it won't boot with both of the new 4GB sticks. Any ideas?

  • PowerMac DP G4 Won't Boot With All RAM Sticks Installed

A few weeks ago, my 800 MHz dual-processor G4 started having frequent kernel panics. I tried all sorts of things, including changing the PRAM battery, resetting the firmware, and resetting the PMU. Then, one day, it would only power up but not boot, so I took it in for repairs.
The shop I took it to determined that the logic board was malfunctioning and replaced it. The computer no longer has any kernel panics.
The machine was designed for three 500 MB RAM sticks, which is what it had ever since I bought it over five years ago. Now, apparently, it won't boot with the last one installed, though it will with two. The shop replaced the new logic board and and even swapped RAM, but the problem still persists. Neither the power supply nor the hard drive appear to be malfunctioning.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    squeakmaster, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried the following with one 512MB RAM stick:
    1. Palce it in the first RAM slot. Does the Mac boot?
    2. If so, remove the stick & place it in the second RAM slot. Does it boot?
    3. If so, remove the stick & place it in the third RAM slot. Does it boot?
The results of this test should reveal (1) if the stick boots in one or more RAM slots, the RAM is good and (2) if it fails to boot in a RAM slot, there is a problem with that slot.
Do this with each of the tree RAM sticks & post back the results.
When the logic board was replaced, was the firmware updated to be compliant with OS X. (Note - The firmware is installed on a chip on the logic board.) Check your Mac's firmware (Boot ROM version) version. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
Can you boot up in OS 9.x? If so you can use DIMM First Aid - Check & recover disabled (missing) RAM from Apple's latest firmware updates http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/10415

  • 2nd HDD bay with HDD = notebook won't boot with HDD in 2nd HDD bay

I recently came into a Pavilion DV9308 Notebook. It was in decent shape, well looked new and since I like tinkering with laptops and the motherboard had the dreaded NVIDIA GPU failure going on, I sent the motherboard out to my motherboard dude and he put a newer NVIDIA video chip in, made some adjustments and modifications to the heatsink cooler etc. Along with my modifications including vent holes and sealing up the fan blowing assembly so when the fan turned on the hot air would leave the laptop it now runs Windows 7 64 bit with a 64GB Kingston OS SSHD and 4GB DDR2 800mhz ram. It runs like lightning and impresses people when they see it boot up in 15 seconds.
The problem is and the whole reason I picked this notebook to restore is because it has two acutal hard drive bays. Well ever since I've gotten the notebook It will not boot with a hard drive in both bays or a hard drive in Bay #2. I had to send the repaired motherboard back once because one of the ram slots wasn't working so this is happening on two different motherboards. I cannot find a reason why this is happening and have yet to find anyone that can help me with this. Can anyone explain to me what I'm doing wrong? I have all the correct drivers I think and the laptop runs at 130"F when pushed to the max! That is amazing compared to what it originally ran. It would be awesome if someone could please help me with this. Thanks.

Hello jason9922.  I understand your notebook won't boot with a hard drive in the second bay.
When you say that the notebook won't boot with a drive in the second bay what exactly do you mean?  Does the CAPS LOCK key flash or do you get an error?
When you have the hard drive installed can you access the BIOS?  If so, is the hard drive detected within the BIOS?
I'll keep an eye out for your response.  Have a great day!

  • Won't boot with external display connected

My MacBook Pro (circa 1997) won't boot with the external display connected. I can connect the external display (20in flat planel) after it has started, and it works just fine.
I have tried two different DVI cables (one of which I think is a DVI-A cable) and the DVI-to-VGA cable. The result is the same.
During the boot phase I get the tone, the apple logo and the progress wheel. After 30 seconds to one minute those disappear to be replaced by an empty blue screen.

In case anyone wonders, my "solution" was to change to a WB Elements Desktop 3TB (only USB 2.0 is currently available for this model). I miss the speed of USB 3.0, but it's much nicer to not have to remember to unplug and plug in the hard drive each time I boot.
Still hoping to see a proper solution to this (since I don't have the WB My Book anymore, I can't test adaher's suggestion).

  • PC won't boot with X-fi XtremeMusic

    # This is my first post, so please tell me if I'm not giving enough info or anything..
I bought a X-fi XtremeMusic and wanted to try out.. So I plugged it into a free PCI slot to find out it wasn't working: I couldn't boot. The only thing that would happen were the casefans spinning, but my screen remained black.
I then tried to boot without the soundcard in the PCI slot, but my screen was still black.. Then I removed the onboard battery from the mainboard and waited a minute or two and put it back in: I was now able to boot again. I tried this one more time and exactly the same happened.
Now I read something about X-fi soundcards and nForce4 chipsets not meshing very well, but I have a gigabyte MA-790XT-UD4P mainboard, so this doesn't apply to me I assume.
Other specs: AMD Phenom II 720
    XFX Radeon HD 4870
    CoolerMaster 620w power supply
My question is: what could be causing this problem? Or is it possible that my card is broken?
    Thanks!

'Re: PC won't boot with X-fi XtremeMusic? Yeah I tried it in both PCI slots, but none worked. Still I wonder about one thing, which I forgot to mention: When I replace the onboard battery and boot I get an error (which I resolve by using the last known good option instead of putting everything to stock value as I'm overclocking in the bios) that the bios checksum is incorrect, so putting in the card changes some value in the bios.. But what value? And does this imply that maybe updating my bios might solve the problem?
Also might I ask what bios revision you are currently using (I'm using the F4 bios)
About the case thing you might also be right: I do have some difficulty putting in the card as it doesn't fit perfectly. I have a CoolerMaster CM690 case which has tool-free fittings, but I can't get the fitting which holds the card down without using substantial force. This also causes the card to be in the PCI slot at a slight angle, I thought this wouldn't matter as the pins still connect, but may this be a problem? I already tried starting up without the case fitting holding the card in place and instead using my fingertips to hold in postion, though to no avail.
Oh and exactly what bracket should I look at (the one you referred to in your post)?

  • Biege G3 won't boot with OS 9.2

I purchased a biege G3 MT with OS 8.6 on eBay. Unfortunately, the OS is in French. I upgraded that to OS 9.2 and now it won't boot. No chime and it stops after the first icon during startup. It won't boot with extensions off nor with the CD. I tried resetting pram, etc. without any luck. Loaded it with 8.5 and it works. Took another HD with 10.2 from another biege G3 and it works. It just doesn't like 9.2, but I have 9.2 running in another biege G3. Are there G3 that won't work with 9.2? Please help.
    biege g3   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi elpro,
Here's a bunch of stock responses you'll hear on the G3 forum.
Is the 9.2 CD a universal installer (gold color), or a gray machine-specific CD, and if it is gray, is it the right one for your machine? Apple made gold CDs for general retail to work with all machines, and gray ones that were usually distributed with a machine with the components just for that machine. Unless you have a universal installer CD, the version of OS 9 you are trying to install may not have the right components for your system unless you happen to have one that matches your type of G3. If the 8.5 CD is the right one, and the OS X you say is from an identical machine then that may explain why they boot up but not your OS 9.
If you post your problem on the G3 forum you'll almost be sure to get this question. How old is the battery in this machine? G3s exhibit all kinds of weird and unexpected symptoms when the batteries are weak, and they go through them pretty quickly, especially if they have been unplugged for a long time. The battery helps preserve basic machine configuration information between bootups so if you're having problems with your monitor it might even be related to the battery. If in doubt, replace the battery.
The PRAM reset and extensions off are the other stock replies but you've tried those.

  • Sawtooth won't boot with anything plugged into it.

My G4 450 won't boot with anything plugged into it at all. The power will go on but no boot. If I unplug everything (except the power cord) it will boot with a chime. Anyone know what the problem could be?

    rs6er:
Well, it's likely to be a problem with the video card, the monitor, or the monitor cable. (I assume that this is your normal monitor which was just recently working on your Mac.)
Some thoughts... Have you tried reseating the video card? Does the monitor power on? Do you have another monitor and cable you can swap and try? Will it boot to Safe Mode ("s" key depressed at startup) with the monitor attached?

  • IMac G5 17" won't boot with new RAM

I tried to install 2 GB RAM into an iMac G5 17" - the computer won't boot at all. The sticks are fine (DDR PC3200 - tried them in a different computer), I reset the PRAM, all to no avail. With the original 256 MB stick, it boots fine, but with the new sticks in either slot or together, all I get is a black screen, no tone, and the fan goes on high. The firmware is up to date. What next?

I have a similar issue with my i5 since installing an additional 4GB (2x2GB) RAM from OWC. It runs fine normally, but if I ever need to reboot the iMac, it usually hangs at a black screen and never chimes. I have to pull the RAM, reset them and then it'll boot. I wonder if there is some timing tolerance problem with mixing RAM (with Apple's Samsung pair).
This morning (after installing 10.6.6) it wouldn't come out of sleep and I had to pull the RAM again. That's actually the first time it wouldn't come out of sleep.

  • [865PE NEO2 PFISR] Won't boot with added memory

Recently I upgraded a few items on my PC which has been running fine for 18 months or so. I changed out the video card and bought double the memory of the same brand and type it had in it. I went from 1gig (2 sticks) and added two more sticks. But now it won't boot. The power is on but no output whatsoever.
I RMA'd the memory thinking that might be the problem but it's the same with the new set. I tried all sorts of memory/slot combos. Basically, the new memory works fine if you swap it out in bank A with the old stuff. That's how it's running right now, so I know all of the sticks are good. I can take a third and put it in either slot bank B and it'll boot, but obviously not run properly. But any combination of these four sticks and the system won't boot!
    Please help!
    I'm running this system:
    Win XP (SP1 I believe)
    865PE NEO2 PFISR
    P4/3.0CGHz, 800M 478P/512K HT
    DDR Corsair 512MB X4 (400)
Dual 80gb samsung HDs running SATA
    Sapphire X800GTO 256M video card
    Antec Sonata case
    TruePower 380Watt ATX12V

What brand, model, and speed are the RAM sticks. Did you check your Test Report booklet which came with the mobo. If you can't find it, you can go to the MSI website and look for your MOBO and get the test report that way. Some brands/models will that have been tested are shown in the report to be okay in all 4 slots, some only test okay in 2 or 3. Check this report and if it is one of the brands/model/speed tested you will see how it fared. It may well be you the MOBO doesn't like your RAM in 3 or 4 slots.
Maybe I missed it, but did you try each slot with only one stick at a time? You may also have a bad RAM slot.

  • PCI G4 won't boot with original cds

I have an older G4 400mhz model I haven't touched in some time so I gave it to my neighbor's son along with the original disks and I think 10.2. It no longer has any OS9 software on it but the kid got a couple of old games and wants to play them but their for OS9.
Long story short, I can't get OS9 to install because the G4 won't boot from any cd/dvd other than the commercial OSX disk. I've tried booting from the original install disk, the software restore disk, and an OS9 disk (disk with big orange 9 on it) but all I get is a grey screen. No folder with question mark, no giving up and just booting from the HD, nothing but grey screen. Any suggestions?
It's been a looooong time since I dealt with OS9 so I don't remember all the voodoo that had to be done.

    Hi, Dave -
Some Macs have exhibited problems where, after their firmware has been updated, the machine won't boot to older versions of OS 9. This does not apply to the G4 in question, since there has been no firmware update applicable to the G4 PCI models.
Whether or not the hard drive has had OS 9 drivers installed should have no effect on the machine's ability to boot to an OS 9 install CD, only on the ability of the OS on such a CD to mount the drive.
RAM is not an issue - if it works for OSX, it works for OS 9.
That leaves few things. Possibilities include -
    • an attached device that OS 9 does not support. Try disconnecting everything except monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If the machine was equipped with a wireless mouse or keyboard, replace those with wired ones, ones suitable for use in OS 9.
    • an added PCI card that's interfereing. This can also include a replacement graphics card - if that was done, try reverting to the original card.
    • a too-weak or dead internal battery. This can happen if the one in it is old, especially if the machine had been left unplugged for a while. Try replacing the battery - you can get a replacement at places like Radio Shack for about US$15, cheaper on line. While replacing the battery, reset the CUDA -
    Article #95065 - G4 (PCI) - Resetting Cuda
Article #95066 - G4 (PCI) - Resetting the Logic Board
    • a resetting of PRAM may help. In case you no longer remember how to do that - restart or boot; immediately press and hold down the Command-Option-P-R keys, keep them held down until you've heard three additional sets of startup chimes. Then release the keys and let startup resume.

  • IMac won't boot with external drives attached

I am using iMac 27" Late 2013 model upgraded to mavericks 10.9.4. Two external drives are always attached with it, one is segate 3.5" 2TB USB 3.0 drive and another one is 2.5" usb 2.0 drive.
when i start my imac with external drives attached it won't boot up. Stuck at plain white screen after a startup chime, not even any apple logo or any progress circle appears. And i have to detach all of my drives to make it boot.
This problem arises after upgrading to mavericks. Already tried resetting PRAM, SMC and checked Startup disk and verify disk with disk utility.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
