T420s Linux and the DVI+VGA port

Hi,
I currently have some problems with my graphic ports of my new ThinkPad T420s (4173-W1J). My problem is a bit complicate (I think) but I will do my best to explain it very detailed. Sorry in advance for any stupid mistakes I made with my configuration.
Problem 1:
I have ordered the notebook with the Intel graphic card, not the NVIDIA one. What I do not understand - If I look in the BIOS of the notebook, I find something with "OPTIMUS", what indicates to me that there is the NVIDIA card inside. Also, if I call "lspci" using my Linux (Kubuntu 11.04) system, I get the following TWO graphic cards:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 1056 (rev a1)
running "lsmod", I get the following output (only relevant video modules, as I identify them to be relevant):
uvcvideo 72195 0
videodev 82052 1 uvcvideo
nvidia 10709116 0
nvram 14419 1 thinkpad_acpi
i915 515121 2 video 19438 1 i915
So I thought - "hey, maybe they made a mistake during configuration and send me the more expensive NVIDIA card included", so I tried to install the nvidia drivers "apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings", but after this my KDE (x-server) does not boot up anymore. After removing the nvidia packages, X-Server booted up again without any problems. How can I find out either of the NVIDIA card is REALLY included, or only the Intel HD? If the NVIDIA is included, what do I have to take care about to enable the correct nvidia drivers?
Problem 2: The main reason why I came to problem 1 was, that I did not get the DVI port of my attached docking station to work. On the one hand, the VGA port works fine, on the other hand every time I attach the notebook to the docking station, I always have to reconfigure the screen resolution and position manually. Even if I say "save as default", he somehow forgets this configuration every time. Also, sometimes the VGA screen does not work, even if I use the same configuration like ever -- I then have to "exchange" the "left of, right of, clone, ..." a few times and it starts working.
For sure, no cable, monitor or whatever is broken - since e.g., I am using the internal and external monitor at the same time right now (in 2-monitor-mode).
So I wanted to solve this issue by using the DVI port - but this port does not work at all (at least I do not know how to enable it!). Using google I found out, that if the NVIDIA card is inside, and the "OPTIMUS"-"feature" is used, than one needs to use the NVIDIA card, otherwise the DVI port does not work. Sadly, as discribed in problem 1, I am neither sure if I have the NVIDIA card inside, nor know how to enable the DVI port at all.
Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi,
after I've forced the BIOS to use only the discrete graphic, I now have additional problems.
First, my system hangs every 2nd time before I even see the grub menu (which runs in graphic mode, thus the screen is blue). If it freezes, I only see a blue screen. If not, I see the blue screen with the normal grub menu. This seems to happen every 2nd boot-up.
A similar issue I had before, since I use full-disc-encryption and grub was unable to load the fonts from my hard-disc, so I copies all grub fonts to the boot partition (what is of course not encrypted).
Second problem, I've installed the NVIDIA drivers you suggested, worked without any problem. After restart, KDE showed the nvidia-logo correctly. But after the login, KDE initialises the user-settings, and there he again freezes my system completely (at about 2/3 of the user-settings-initialisation).
To be honest, I do not know how to proceed. :-(

Is there anyway on the T60 that you can use both the VGA and the DVI ports simultaneously with the laptop LCD (3 monitors). This T60 has the ATI FireGL card.

    mbmpcpro, welcome to the forum,

  • Controlling the DVI/VGA output

Apologies if this seems off the Keynote topic. I couldn't find any mention of this in the posts.
Is there any way to turn on/off the DVI/VGA output to a projector from the keyboard, (iBook/Power Book)? With the wintel stuff I used to be able to F5/F7 (or whatever) to do this.
    Cheers
    Rich

I've never seen anything like that on a Mac. Are you SURE that key command on a Wintel actually turns OFF the port? No other port on a computer can be turned off, so that feature surprises me. I'd think it would make a projector suddenly put up a large NO SIGNAL message on your screen.
You can use F7 on a mac to turn on and off Video mirroring if you have a Powerbook, though if you're looking for a way to black the projector, I usually use the projector controls to do that, or freeze the screen. Another option is to make your desktop background BLACK, so when you exit a Keynote show, all the audience sees is black. This only works when NOT using mirroring though.

  • Is the Apple Digital AV Adapter  and the Apple VGA Adapter the same thing

is the Apple Digital AV Adapter  and the Apple VGA Adapter the same thing i want to get a ipad and i want to no if there the same thing before i buy it i would want it for the web for pic but for videos too

VGA is an analog signal, while HDMI is an uncompressed digital image.
The uncompressed digital image is more superior.

  • How can i use the DVI-VGA adaptor under this particular circumstance?????

I got a LCD only has DVI-I port, while as u guys has noticed, the MBP only got DVI-I too. So, my first thought is to get another DVI-VGA adaptor. What i'm doing is to hook up the VGA port then plug each DVI port to LCD and MBP. Well, the problem comes out that MBP was able to indentify the Monitor but no image apears on Monitor. How can i solve this problem? Or do i need to buy any other accessaries to configure my MBP in order to make it work with the **** Monitor!

Right. You don't need a DVI-to-VGA adapter to connect DVI-to-DVI, obviously. The included DVI-to-VGA adapter is not meant to connect to the external display/projector, but merely to give you the proper connection to connect the VGA cable of the display/projector. I give a lot of presentations, everywhere I go there is a long VGA cable (at the podium, conference table, etc.); the short adapter is nice because I'd rather not carry a long cable with me...

  • What cables do I need to connect MacBook Pro to the TV VGA port

    Nov 6, 2014 7:01 PM
    Hi,
The HDMI port on my Maxent tv is not working.  I am hoping to connect my MacBook Pro to the TV via the VGA port on the TV to watch Netflix and movies.  What cables do I need that will connect to a VGA port on a TV from my MacBook Pro (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)?  And will that cable support audio or will I need a separate audio cable?
    Thanks-
    Sheri
    OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    Hey Sheri Lynn,
Thanks for the question. Our online store has a helpful tool that should guide you through the process of picking the best adapter for your MacBook model. You can check it out here:
Get help choosing Mac video adapters - Apple Store (U.S.)
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/cables/cable-chooser#!
If you are connecting via VGA you will need a separate audio cable if your TV supports it.
    Thanks,

  • Oracle, linux and the AS400

In a previous message I asked whether an AS400 was a platform that could run
Oracle. Apparently the answer is "no", it is one of the few systems that
Oracle doesn't run on because IBM is pushing their competing product DB2
    running under OS400.
I found out yesterday, that IBM is making a big push for AS400 users to
install Linux on the AS400. I know that there are versions of Oracle for
    Linux (obviously :-) ).
In terms of Oracle for Linux, will it run on a AS400 running Redhat Linux?
Anyone have a clue? (Anyone from Oracle who can make a guess? :-) )
    Thanks.

  • Only the DVI-I port no HDMI port, can use Applr TV?

My TV model is Sharp TU-324GH, (http://www.go-gddq.com/down/2012-01/12011407508070.pdf) which only display 1080i and no HDMI in port, may I use Apple TV?

The only supported method is HDMI, there is no guarantee with others. If it does work you may have issues with protected content (ie iTunes, Netflix).
Also, Apple TV supports 1080P, but not 1080i

  • CA-1000. How to connect between the TTL 3.3v to 5.0 v pullup circuit and the J-series ports

I open the CA-1000 and trying to configure the wire similar to the attached diagram.
But I have trouble figuring out where are the DIO 8, 9, 10, 11, ... because there is no label in the flexible flat wire connected between the J-series ports and the pullup circuit (I think the orange circuit board is the one). Please see the picture attached.
Also, what is the yellow block plug into the pullup circuit? Is there any special alignment between this yellow one and the pins on the black head?

    Hi longbelao,
We may need to clear a few things up before we work on the connection diagram you have.
The best way to determine the pins on the ribbon cable would most likely be to use a DMM. Could you also clarify where you are connecting the ribbon cable?
From my understanding of your pictures, the orance circuit board is just a breadboard for you to build your circuit from the connection diagram you have. When you are discussing the "yellow block" are you talking about the SIP resistor? If so, this is just a pack of resistors you can use for your circuit. Also, the 8x2 breakout for your 16 pin ribbon cable will not work in the breadboard. The rows of 5 holes are connected in series. Putting the connector in the breadboard would short the pins together. However, if this cable is only connected to D8 through D-15 this may not be an issue. Again further clarification on where the other end of the ribbon cable would be helpful for further understanding your hardware set-up.

  • Difference between the abap stack http port and the java http port

    Hello,
Is there a difference if a call a webservice in the SAP PI via the abap http port or the java http port?
    For abap it is:

    For java:
    http://pi.host.de:53500/XISOAPAdapter/MessageServlet?
    Is it technical the same?
Which is your prefered port and why?
    Thank you
    Best regards,

    Hi,
    I found the blog
Using the SOAP inbound channel of the Integration Engine
    So the main differences are:
    Advantage
When you send SOAP messages directly to the Integration Server, you reduce the message load on the adapter engine. This can improve the performance.
    Restrictions
The SOAP inbound channel of the Integration Server does not support attachments. SOAP messages with content type "multipart" are rejected.

  • Oracle Linux and the Linux Foundation

According to several blogs and resources, Oracle has been a long time partner and supporter of the Linux Foundation. The Linux Foundation ensures that Linux remains free and technically advanced by marshaling the resources of its members and the open source development community.
Some of the Oracle Linux enhancements, such as Dtrace and Ksplice require a ULN support subscription. It seem obvious that not all Oracle enhancements are freely available. Are Dtrace and Ksplice open source projects? How does it fit into GPL licensing and the tasks of the Linux Foundation?

Red Hat has done a good job to promote Linux for enterprise systems and work with vendors to support RHEL. The product evaluation license and paid subscriptions for necessary updates and Red Hat products was obviously something Red Hat did to make money. Not really knowing GPL back then I though it was unethical to sell Linux. I'm not necessarily a fan of GPL and I guess most people don't understand that it is a copyleft license, which does not prohibit to sell a program for money, but requires to provide the source code.
I think the business concepts of RHEL won't work much longer in the future - Oracle Linux is a good example. So if RHEL gets cheaper, will Oracle screw in the price tag again? The price spiral can only go down. Why not ending it and find better ways to get paid.
People who already have a ULN subscription will probably be happy to try Oracle Linux exclusive value-added components, but will people who are interested to try these add-ons be willing to buy a subscription? I think no serious business buys any cats in the bag, not even for a pittance or just because it's Oracle.
Most business software today is complex enough already. Software evaluation and fancy licensing are show stoppers. The criteria to choose one product over another are often rather vendor loyalty, lemming syndrome, fear of incompatibility, fear to be left behind, market share and cost of ownership. For a serious businesses, the perception or guarantee of future product support is more important than saving a few bucks.
Linux does no longer have to prove that it is a serious and reliable operating system. It think Oracle could benefit from providing everything Oracle Linux for a free subscription, not necessarily GPL. There would be more people trying Oracle Linux for fun or to see what the exclusive features are all about and eventually become enthusiasts and buy a technical support contract for running Oracle products in a business environment, in which case Oracle does not have to be cheaper than RHEL anymore. Competition on the level of technical features will improve a product, a cheaper price won't.

  • Linux and the Sound Blaster Live

Ive got my hands on a SB Li've 24bit external sound card and after some fiddling around I seem to only have standard stereo and no 5. Audio.
My question is has anyone got these things to output 5. on Linux yet.
I'm going to have to return it back to the distributor as I seem to be miss informed that it would work in Linux.
Im getting this feeling that most Creative stuff is not "Linux friendly" and may not recommend their wares in future,
Looks like its time to start a Linux Audio device company, 40 million users is a nice market.

    Hello,
Please bear with me as I'm a complete novice on this.....
    I have the laptop, and whist re-decorating the room, I have?run?6 cables (sub woofer to be at the?rear of the room) to a wall mounted connector plate. So I think I need the following;
. Software to convert the sound within my laptop to 5. format (if not already done) and to get it to a USB. Installed sound card should be capable of this.
    2. USB?cable from PC to ?The Sound Blaster? Li've!? 24-bit External?
    3. The Sound Blaster? Li've!? 24-bit External?
    4. Maybe someting else to amplify and distribute the audio
    5. 6 short leads to my wall mounted connector plate
    6. Speakers
Not sure if the aboe helps?and perhaps there's another way of doing it instead of using the?Sound Blaster? Li've!? 24-bit External?
    Many thanks

  • Want to buy IPOD for G4 using Panther and the older USB port

I want to buy a used IPOD. I have the 800 megahertz G4 with Panther 10.39 and I guess that older USB port. I hear is isn't USB 2.0. Which Ipod should I buy that will work?
I want an ipod but I don't want to buy a brand new computer for a few months!
    Thank you very kindly,
    Tom in Arizona

Thanks very much. The only one that seems to be a good match is Ipod Shuffle. There remains, however, one problem. Its corresponding version of Itunes is 4.7.1, and I have 7.4.2. Is it possible to get version 4.7.1 and repopulate it with my songs so that I can use Ipod Shuffle? This would appear to be a real problem.
    Gracias,
    Tomás
PS: I'm assuming this old macitosh does not have the version 2 USB port. Here's what my system profile lists:
    USB Bus:
    Vendor Name: Apple Computer, Inc.
    Product ID: 32773 ($8005)
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Bus Power (mA): 500
