T420s No power, blinking power Led - won't boot

My 2 months old T420s declines to boot since this morning.
After pressing the Power-Button it starts to alternatingly flash the Power-Button light and the fingerprint reader LED.
Nothing else happens, no fan starting to run or anything else.
I haven't changed anything since yesterday when it booted with no problems.
Does anyone know what this could be?

All,
For this particular scenario, it is most likely the system board.   It is probably still a good practice to pull the battery and AC and try to reset by pressing and holding the power button several times, for several seconds each time, and then re-attaching AC and try to restart.
If the symptoms remain, please contact service for assistance.
Best regards,
Mark

  • Power mac G4 450 won't boot past grey apple

I took trusty old Power Mac G4 450 (PCI graphics) apart for a week to paint the office. I put everything back together as before including a lot of old SCSI peripherals, but when I start it up, the fans run, i get the chimes, but it will not boot past the apple on the grey screen. I tried a safe boot, disconnecting everything but monitor & keyboard, & resetting the pram. The battery was replaced about 8 months ago. It had been freezing a lot before this, & I considered replacing it, but all I need it for is to run an old SCSI flat bed scanner that I'd like to hang on to. Any ideas?

    Hi-
Will it boot to the OS X install disc?
If so, use Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" on the start up volume.

  • 3 Power Mac MMD's won't boot...

    Hey support crew,
At my school my multimedia teacher is trying to get three different Power Macintosh G4 Mirror Door Drives to work. All of them have at least one different thing wrong with them, let me explain.
All of them are 1GHz G4s (if I am correct), 512 MB RAM, and 80 GB HDD's (if I am correct, again). All of them are running 10.2 (factory installs) . (We're not the kind of school that keeps the computers up to date). I believe we have all the restore CD's for these computers, however we do not want to reinstall the OS due to we are looking for specific files on them (video footage).
#1: This computer used to work but was highly unreliable. It would take literally 5 minutes to boot, the superdrive has a disk stuck in the drive and will not open, and would lock up constantly and gave kernel panics. About a week ago we decided to open it up to take the RAM out of it, however found out it wasn't compatible with Quicksilvers and put it back in. We tried booting it up today, and it made a loud BEEP noise and turned back off. The RAM is secured.
#2: This computer will not turn on. The monitor receives power (studio display LCD) but I believe the power button is broken because it goes farther in than what it is supposed to. We currently have been using this machine to try and get parts for the others.
#3: This G4 will turn on, but will not output picture to the display. The light stays lit and it sounds like its booting up, but we've tried two different monitors (Studio LCD's) and none of them would show picture. The power light stays orange when connected to them.
For the most part, we need enough advice to get at least one machine operable, and then we will need to know how to transplant the hard drives out of these machines to look for the files we need. We tried getting the hard drive out of one but we couldn't figure out how to open the caddy that they are in without prying it open.
Many thanks and hope you can help! We've tried researching this, but due to we're looking at 3 different problems on 3 different machines we were fruitless.

*Also note some of these machines appear to have two internal HDDs, maybe 2x40GB?

    Several things to try.
    Try *Resetting the Logic Board*
Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
    Note:
This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to

  • Power Mac G4 (MDD) Won't Boot, Gives Error Screen "You need to restart..."

Hey guys, I got this Power Mac G4 (Dual 1.42GHz, 2GB Ram) from a neighbor about 3 weeks ago and it has been smooth sailing since I got it. However today my brother was using it, and got the rainbow loading mouse for a long time, nothing would open, I couldn't force quit any of the programs. So I just told him to hold the power button and restart. Well on reboot you hear the tone, then the Apple Logo appears then the screen shows up and says "You need to restart your computer..."
It happens no matter how many times I restart my computer. I've reset the RAM and the PRAM but it does the same thing. Any suggestions?

Oh man, I'm so confused now. I don't know what could have happened.
I put in my Leopard Disc (that I got with my MBP) and booted it from disc, and it said I couldn't install 10.5 because 10.4 or later couldn't be found. That *****, could it be because I was running 10.5.4 and maybe it doesn't recognize it because 10.5.4 came out after this disc was made?
Also, since there are 3 hard drives, I don't know which one I have Leopard on, it's one of the 120gbs, but since this is handed down I don't know which drive is which and I don't know how to take the hard-drives out from the bracket, is there instructions for removing/installing hard drives.
Once again, I appreciate the support, you guys really are helping me!
EDIT: I talked to the guy who gave me this computer, he said that there was a problem with the battery, he said he replaced it about a year ago. Do you think that the battery could be a culprit in this problem?

  • Power Mac 7200/120 won't boot off new hard drive. Says HD "not supported"

I just recently came into possession of a PowerMac 7200/120. The only thing it came with is a boot cd with Mac OS 8.1. It booted fine off the cd with only the date/time issues of a dead PRAM battery, but when I tried to boot the internal HD on its own, it was a no-go. Flashing ?. When I tried to verify the HD, the software would not even find the HD. Not even listed on the program. You can't initialize what isn't there, so I ordered a new HD from an online vendor. I replaced it according to the directions on the Apple .pdf file I googled. I also reset the logic board and replaced the PRAM battery. Upon booting after all this ... still flashing ?. I run the same verification process as before and I actually DO see this HD listed, but it says it is "not supported" and doesn't allow me to initialize it. It's virtually the same quantum fireball HD with the Apple logo as the old one I just took out, just a different GB size. Connections and slots are all the same. Is this just not the right HD for my computer? Is there something I need to download? I just rebuilt a Performa 6300cd with ZERO issues.

Ok ... a couple of mistakes on my part which of course could change EVERYTHING. I'm embarassed with the amount of mistakes in my own question. A couple of forgetful omissions on my part ...
#1. The drive DID start up just fine upon first switching out the HD. Original software on HD was 8.1, but as I needed to run older programs not compatible with 8.1, I initialized and installed 7.5.3 clean. (I know ... HUGE omission here, but be kind as I've been working on multiple computers and it has been a couple months since I did this). It worked fine after download. After coming back to this computer a couple of months later, I get the flashing ? again (like before the HD switch).
#2.The HD the online vendor sent me was not the one I ordered, but ended up being a carbon copy of the one I took out except the GB size (which was actually larger than the one I ordered). Didn't physically count the pins, but it plugged in fine. Everything fit.
#3. I also forgot to mention that while the CD drive worked, the floppy either spat my disks out at me or asked to initialize them. These were the same floppies that I took out of my Performa literally a minute earlier (which worked).
#4. The 8.1 cd is a mistake on my part again. Turns out it's the black-faced 7.5.3 cd (7200, 7500, 7600, 8500, and 9500 series). Got confused with the 8.1 drive.
    UPDATE
The strangest thing ... I just booted up off the cd and it's now reading the HD. I ejected the cd and booted it up on its own ... and it works just fine. I did NOTHING since I asked the question. In fact, I just booted the computer back up in response to your response.
Before I delved into these boards and bothered to ask for help ... I had opened it up, cleared out a TON of dust bunnies with my can o' air, pressed the CUDA? chip, and then replaced the PRAM battery. Restarted holding down cmd-opt-p-r until it chimed again and it was still a flashing ?. You could hear it clicking as if trying to start the drive up at regular intervals. I restarted the computer well over 10 times hoping it was just something jammed up in the HD (though just bought) and it was the same flashing ?. And now today ... did nothing and it boots up just fine. I check the drive setup lite and it now shows macintoshHD there (instead of unsupported drive - original showed nothing at all).
Does it take time for the PRAM battery or logic board to reset? Did it just needed a thorough internal cleaning? Or should I chalk this up as just being a really old comp?
I really don't want to go delving back into it now that it's working to check the SCSI terminations, jumpers, etc. I'm going to assume those are ok now it's booting.

  • Power Mac G4 500mhz Won't boot from CD

Ive got an old G4 here that I am trying to see if I can bring back to life. Booting up normal gives me the little finder folder with the question mark.
So far I can boot into Open Firmware.
CD Drive will give me the Directory of the OS 9 restore disc i put in it.
I have an old hard drive in there but it has nothing on it.
Holding C or Option does nothing on startup.
Question:  Can I boot this up from the CD without any Hard Drive?  If i must have a hard drive, should it be configured as a slave or master?
Any tricks on getting it to run off of the restore CD?

So last night I got an old IDE drive from a PC recycle place. Just stuck it in there and still nothing. I'm guessing the hard drive is formatted for NTFS but I should still be able to just boot off the CD and format the drive with Disk Utility right?
I can boot into Open Formware and use   Dir CD:,\\ and I can see the contents of the OS 9 install disc so I know the cd is good and the optical drive.
I have reset everything I can through open firmware and still it refuses to boot off the CD.
It is the restore disc that came with the computer.

  • Aspire Ethos 8951g Blinking Battery Light - Won't Boot

When I press the power button on my Aspire Ethos 8951g, the battery light blinks five times at a one second interval and nothing else happens. If I use the switch to disconnect the battery, the battery light does not blink and the computer will not boot. So far I've tried to do a power reset by using the switch to disconnect the integrated battery, removing the RAM, and holding the power button for 90 seconds. It had no effect.  I also bought a new AC adapter, which also had no efffect.  Does anyone know what the five flashes mean? I can't find it in any documentation. The battery life had been pretty good up until this point.

    IllN,
Typically the blinking battery light means it has no charge. Here are a few things I can think of:
Purchasing a new charging adapter rules that out. (good job!)
Is the charging port connection snug, or is it loose at all? Can you still see the pin inside the port?
    Purchase a new battery.
    Mainboard could be bad.

  • MSI KT4AV 4 RED LEDs WON'T BOOT

Hi.  I recently purchased a new MSI KT4AV motherboard, new AMD Athlon 1.33 Ghz CPU, and new PC2100/DDR266 DIMM RAM, and when I turn it on, all 4 LEDs on the diagnostic bracket light up RED (meaning processor failure).  Does anyone know what could cause this?
    My system specs:
    MSI KT4AV motherboard
AMD Athlon 1.33 Ghz 200 FSB CPU
    PC2100/DDR266 DIMM
    420W PSU (+3.3/28A, +5/40A, +12/18A)
Hopefully that's enough to diagnose any problems because it won't output any video, just 4 red LEDs on the D-bracket.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
When I bought my second KT4AV, I was planning on using an Athlon T-Bird 1.4 I had laying around in it.  It had the exact same problem as you are having, it just didn't work.  I then tried a Palomino 1700+ I had in a another computer that I knew worked fine - it was (and still is) in a K7T266 Pro2-RU - and it didn't work either.
I was thinking the motherboard was bad but I bought an Applebred Duron 1600, and it worked perfectly!  So it would seem that even though they are listed as compatible, the older Athlon T-Birds and Palominos simply will not work.  My advice to you, buy an Applebred Duron, or better yet, an T-Bred XP 2000+.
Sorry if that wasn't what you wanted to hear!

  • Imac won't boot after update

hi guys i am new to macs I bought this for my daughter and tried to update. The update said to hold the program button and push power, well now she won't boot up just a grey sreen and what looks like a file with a blinking question mark and a face..
    I have a imac g3 400mhz with 256mb ram
osx and 9.2 i belive any help appreciated

The flashing folder icon is your iMac's way of saying, "where is my OS? I can't find an OS!" If this appears briefly and goes away, it's usually because the PRAM was reset recently. The 4.1.9 firmware does reset your PRAM in the process--but only if successful in its task. To fix this temporary hiccup, open the Startup Disk control panel and select the hard drive, then click Restart.
If this icon continues to flash, there are some steps you can try.
    1. Reset the PRAM via Command (Apple)Option+PR at startup. Hold the keys down until the Mac chimes thrice. If your Mac starts normally after the third chime, end here.
    2. Reinitialize the firmware. Enter Open Firmware mode (CommandOption+OF) and issue the following, pressing Return after each command:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
If successful, the Mac should reboot itself. Stop here if this solves the problem.
    3. If you have the iMac restore disc, or a disc with OS 9.1-9.2.1, boot it and run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder to repair file structure errors. If you have DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro Classic, you will be able to do more thorough repairs.
    4. If all of the above fail, you can reinstall OS 9 if you still need to do the firmware upgrades, but you should reinitialize the hard drive with Drive Setup if you also want a clean install. Drive Setup can be found in the CD's Utilities folder.

  • My G4 won't boot past logo screen

    Hi,
My Power Mac G4 desktop won't boot correctly. The fan and boot chime turns on and the display obviously works, but shows nothing after the grey logo screen. Here's what I've tried to do to solve the problem:
    1. Unplugged all of the cables in back, waited two minutes, and restarted: no change
    2. Attempted to boot in safe mode: no change
    3. "Zapped" the PRAM: no change
    4. Put in the install disk and held down "C" to boot from that. Result:

One thing to note: when I originally bought this computer used, it ran beautifully. One day, I booted it up and the dock had disappeared and hot corners were disabled. Soon after, the "you need to restart your computer" sign began recurring with greater frequency (kernel panics?). Now this.
Thanks for any help you can give. Layman's terms, please; I'm totally new to this

Hi! Is the cd/dvd a retail version of OSx or one from another computer? Second if it won't boot from a retail install disc then there's likely hardware problems. Have you tried a hardware test disc? Also try zapping the pram command option p r keys down at startup till second chime. Then hold the "c" key down to see if it will boot to the install disc. Tom

Yes, Like I said, it sounds like the Drive is dying, but in SU mode you might try...
    /sbin/fsck_hfs -f
Or possibly stronger Disk Repair tools...
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

  • IMac G5 blinking power light / won't turn on

When my iMac G5 is hooked up to power, the power light (front bottom right panel) faintly blinks once every 2 seconds or so. The monitor is not on at all, and the computer does not appear to be running (no sounds).
All other devices hooked up to that particular power outlet are working fine, and pressing the power button does nothing. Holding the power button down halts the blinking, but when I let go the blinking resumes.
I have also tried removing all devices attached to the computer, including the keyboard and mouse.
This machine was working fine on friday, but when I came back into work today (monday) the machine was 'off' and nothing I do seems to cause any change.
    Very confused, any help appreciated.

It may be that your Power Supply Unit is failing, look at the suggestions here, try them and if nothing works, call Apple. If you have a Rev A, you may qualify for the Repair Extension Program. (sorry to assume you didn't know about sleep, sometimes very basic things are not known to posters).
Please let me know how you make out,

  • Compaq CQ61 won't boot, 2 led blinks.

Product Name and NumberCompaq Presario CQ61-310SA Operating System installed (if applicable)None Error message (if any)LED flashes twice before pausing and repeating. Indicates BIOS corruption. Any changes made to your system before the issue occuredBeen inactive for 10 months due to having no power cable, I purchased a 3rd party power cable for it today. ProblemHello, as I stated above, my laptop has been inactive for 10 months and only today I decided to finally get a charger for it, which set me back £5.99, clearly a low quality charger but I was unsure if the laptop even worked anymore and didn't want to splash out on a manufacturer charger. When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED indicator next to the charger port lights up, but with the battery installed the charge LED inbetween the Power and HDD LED's flashes 4 times, on the 4th flash it holds for about a second then discontinues the blinks. When powered up the backlight and LCD do not turn on and the CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK LED's flash twice before pausing and repeating and the WiFi light glows orange. I can hear the HDD and fan spinning but the BIOS isn't initiated. I understand this error code refers to BIOS corruption and have attempted a hard reset, holding the power for 15 seconds as stated on some websites, then 30 as stated on others, and finally 60 seconds, as well as replacing the BIOS battery, HDD and memory modules to no avail... It doesn't seem as if the battery is charging at all, but it is completely empty so I'll leave it for a while to see if it does charge. Is this anything to do with the fact I bought a cheap chinese charger? Or would I have to replace the motherboard? AC AdapterName: WeiXin Da Electronics AC Adapter - PA-1700-02Input: 100-240v ~ 1.8AOuput: 18.5V ~ 3.5A Many thanks, Jordan.

This is a phenomenon of these computers.
If you have a computer that won't boot, remove battery, unplug charger. Press powerbutton for at least 20 seconds, insert the power cable, and hold for another 20 seconds. Nothing will seem to happen. Then press power again.
Your LiION battery is close to end of life. Replace. Or get used to doing this. Diag software will warn for failed battery. You will also have a ton of BIOS messages about an obscure error occuring. But you need to have a working Diag partition to make some sense of the meaningless error reported in BIOS.
This has nothing to do with the RTC/NVRAM backup. But it's no reason to not replace it. It costs about 3$ and you can find a 2032 Lithium cell almost everywhere. (3V, 20mm diameter, 3,2mm thick). Located under the harddrive bay cover on the bottom of computer.
If no boot occurs, check that the "lid closed" switch is working. In some environments they can get stucked in "Lid closed" position.
Also if you have access to a can of compressed air (duster), clean the airflow / cooling part from accumulated dust.
These are not exactly the most energy saving computers. They get hot. I have seen examples of plastic chassie parts melting.

  • G5 No power, only 1st LED on at test

    hi,
I have read many of the posts here relating to Imac g5 not starting up. I have the same problem. I have a g5 ALS. I did the LED test. The first LED comes on but the second LED would not flicker or come on. So, I concluded (from the apple support info on the net), that my logic board was gone. I replaced the logic board an hour ago and: NOTHING! The same thing! LED 1 on, that is it. Did I miss something? Should I have had replaced the power supply in stead? Please help! Lost in Paris....

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum so please be gentle...
My iMac G5 2nd edition (with Ambient Light Sensor) froze today and the fan went berserk. Only option we had was to shut the thing up by pressing the power button. Now the mac won't boot anymore. When I try to boot it sometimes the light on the front lights up and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the chime sounds and sometimes it doesn't. The screen stays black. I cannot boot from cd player either. I tried the procedure as written in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2173?viewlocale=en_US
The first and second of four LEDS on the back are on permanently (which is good according to the article), but the third is not, which should indicate that the computer and the LCD display aren't communicating and no video signal is being generated.
I want to be absolutely sure that the logic board needs to be replaced and that I tried everything there is before I run to the store to buy me a new iMac.
    Any suggestions? Thanx!
