T420s Optimus Issues

Greetings,
I have a T420s that is an Optimus capable model.   I am trying to achieve a 3 monitor set up and I have the correct docking station (the plus model), however, my optimus does not work properly, I have a monitor hooked up to almost every port in hopes of detecting them (2 DVI, 1 VGA, 1 Display port):
1)  In Optimus Graphics Mode (Via the BIOS), when I log in to Windows, I can open up Device manager and watch the NVS 4200M drop off of the device manager and either give a generic graphics card name and indicate there is an issue with it or not appear at all
 A) The NVIDIA Control panel will not load as it indicates I do not have an NVIDIA GPU installed
B) No NVIDIA Context menus are available
2) In Discrete Graphics Mode (Via the BIOS), the Intel GPU does not appear in device manager, however the NVIDIA GPU Works fine
A) NVIDIA Optimus Graphics settings do not appear under "Manage 3D Settings" on the NVIDIA control panel
B) I do not have a "View" menu on NVIDIA control panel from which I can check the feature to add GPU selection to the
right click context menu when dealing with applications
C) I somewhat expect this to be the behavior using Discrete Graphics mode
3) In integrated graphics mode (via the bios), the NVIDIA GPU does not appear under device manager, however the Intel GPU works fine.
A) I assume this is the correct behavior
NVIDIA Details:
NVS 4200M
NVIDIA Control Panel Version : 4.3.980.0
NVIDIA Driver: 276.58
Intel Details:
HD3000
I've reinstalled all GPU related drivers for both cards, and reinstalled using the generic package that lenovo provides.  This has not corrected the issue.    I used the ones dated April 2012, from this site.
I've reinstalled everything again, attempted to install the drivers directly from NVIDIA and it states I must install an Intel driver first before allowing me to proceed
Any ideas?

I don't think its in the list it may be somewhere else. Only current ones are listed usually. Go to the support website and see what is listed for your machine type and build number.
You may have to call support but why did the OEM image get replaced if there wasn't a customized tested image made for it. Clearly if you need this driver as well you're just starting with collection of likely issues that they may not be able to resolve. Support may say to put the image back on and then call if you have problems.
Not knowing what was done requires hands on by a seasoned tech who may be able to resolve it in time. There are machine specific which need to addressed and without them installed and the lenovo tools and Thinkvantage installed you could be in for long weekend working on it.
Good luck.

  • Weird Optimus issue

I've noticed that if I boot the Ghost 15 SRD and then restart the system normally, the discrete GPU is the only one functioning on the restart within Win7. I have to shut the system down and then reboot in order to regain the integrated graphics adapter again. I have autodetect OS turned on in the BIOS (1.35) and my only OS is Win7 Pro64. Certainly unexpected behavior especially since there is an intervening shutdown which should have cleared all states. Another EC issue perhaps?

Yea, the Optimus issues in this generation of machines leaves a lot to be desired.  And it isn't just the W520.  I see weird stuff with the T420.  I never restart.  I always shut down and cold boot now.  The Intel Series 510 SSD taught me that first but the Optimus implementation just reinforced it.

  • Photoshop CS6 - 64 bit Optimus issue - SOLVED!

Photoshop CS6 64-bit will not run when Optimus is enabled on my W520 system The program works fine if I have discrete only set in the BIOS. Setting the default graphics adapter to NVIDIA GPU when using Optimus still has the problem. Anyone seen this issue before? CS6 Photoshop 32-bit runs OK under Optimus with the NVIDIA GPU set as default. I'm stumped so far. I searched the Adobe Support site and found nothing concerning this issue.
Update_1: I initially installed the latest NVIDIA driver from the W520 Driver Matrix. The NVIDIA level downleveled from 296.88 to 296.20, but CS6 started working properly. I then downloaded the latest NVIDIA driver 301.42 which was the level recommended by several graphics sites. The system is working smoothly now. CS6 will now use the OpenGL and acceleration features of the 2000M. BTW, my WEI changed from 6.5 to 6.6 with this driver. The 3D graphics still remains at 6.9.
Update_2: I encountered yet another anomaly with the display driver. I placed the system into Discrete Graphics and updated the display driver to 301.42. When I set the system back to Optimus, the CS6 programs could no longer access the NVIDIA GPU. I had to reinstall the 301.42 drivers again in Optimus mode to have everything back to full function. I switched back to Discrete mode to check if things were still working (they were) and then I returned to Optimus mode and the programs continued to function properly. There must be a sequence that requires Discrete updates first, and them=n Optimus, but I've never seen it documented.

  • T420: Network Issues

I installed a new hard drive today in my lenovo T420. I installed Windows 7 ultimate, but it won't recognize the internal network card. I can't find the driver anywhere, and when I try to download any kind of driver that I think would help, When i hit f5, it responds with "no network adapter found" and it also doesn't show up under computer management. I'm using a USB adapter right now, but I would like the internal card to work. Also, when I tried to install the bluetooth adapter driver, it told me that the installation couldn't complete because there was no supportable hardware. I really need help on this!
I am very tech savvy, I built my own PC and run a technology repair company, but I typically don't work with software, mainly hardware. I still know my way around, so don't be afraid to get technical when helping and don't use the cliche "have you tried turning it off and back on" answer please
    Thanks again!

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that network adapter is not getting detected in your Lenovo ThinkPad T420.
Check in BIOS -> Security -> I/O port access if network adapter is enabled.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,

  • T420 Build Issues

My T420 (4177 CTO) is still under factory warrenty, so it is less than a year old. There are two build issues that I have so far ignored, but I am wondering if they are "normal."
The laptop does not rest level on a flat surface. Three of the rubber grips on the underside touch the surface, but the front, left grip is so far off the surface that you can slide a piece of paper under it without resistence. When I rest my left hand on the palmrest, the chassis audibly "creaks" and visibly moves as the rubber grip comes to rest on the surface.
Just recently permanent friction marks have appeared on the left half of my screen, clearly caused by months of rubbing against the keyboard. I have tried cleaning them per Lenovo's instructions, to no avail.
I am beginning to think that the chassis is deformed, and that it has been this way since I received the machine. Both issues have been present since the start, but the marks on the screen could be easily wiped off until recently.
Are these issues "normal," or am I suffering from a defective machine?
Thanks for your opinion or any information!

My T420 has spent its life in a backpack, as did the T400 and T61 before it.  I've never noticed this kind of problem.
Have you taken a careful look at the sides of the laptop to verify that the keyboard bezel and bottom plastic are snapped together correctly?  Any gaps or bulges?

  • T420s wireless issue

    hello,
I've jus bought a new thinkpad t420s. it was working fine the first week, but now I have discovered a problem.
the internet speed is very slow, when I'm connected with the wireless adapter. My machine has a Intel(R) WiFi Link 1000 BGN.
I really don't know where this problem comes from. I have not changed any settings. The only thing I have done is to update my operating system Windows 7 professional.
maybe someone has the same problem and knows an answer.
    best regards.

I manage a network in a small office and have a similar issue. Here are the details:
We have several users with Lenovo T420 laptops who can connect to the 802.11G wireless access points in the office and obtain full access to the ISP connection bandwidth, which is approximately 10 MBPS download speed.
Several additional users have Lenovo T20s laptops, and they can also connect to the same 802.11G wireless access point, but only get about 1 MBPS download. They can connect to a different access point that is a dual-band 802/11 G/N and get the full bandwidth.
Based on the above information I am thinking it is a setting/issue within the T420s laptops.

  • T420 - Audio Issue, Inconsistent Audio Volume

    Dear all,
recently I have been encountering an audio issue with my T420. Regardless of whether I use the integrated speakers or an external playback device via the audio plug, audio volume goes up and down several times within a minute.
It's rather annoying and irritating. I am using the standard driver supplied by Lenovo and with stock settings.
Did anyone encounter this problem and might provide me with some advice?
    Thanks a lot!

The setting was already at disabled.
I thought, this might be the problem I was experience, as it was only when I used Ethernet rather than WiFi: DPC latency + audio/mouse skip and stutter on t420... - Lenovo Community
I tried the proposed settings, to no avail.
Interestingly, re-installing the same drivers that were installed previously seems to have resolved the problem.
Maybe some settings or the install were messed up.

  • T420 Touchpad issue

    Hiya all,
I am new to this forum, so please be kind!
I have a brand new T420 issued by my company. I am liking all of it's features as I get to know it.
One issue I have got is that as I am typing, I touch the Touchpad often and hence the words get typed at different points!
A simple baffling question - how do I disable my touchpad. If I hit Fn + F8, I only have the following options:
Buttons, Pointers, Pointer Options, Wheel & Hardware in the 5 tabs. I am unable to diable the touchpad from any of the options.
I went to Control Panel and used the Mouse option, it gives me exactly the same screen as Fn+F8. So no use again
    Kindly please help.... thanks,

you did not install the ultranav driver to get the Ultranav pop up window that allows you to switch between trackpoint and trackpad.

  • Thinkpad t520 dual boot win 7 and arch + optimus issue

--today I got my first laptop and first thinkpad..... thinkpad t520 with the following specifications:-
intel i5 2520M - HD+ AG display (1600*900) - 4 gigs of ram - nvidia optimus -Hard disk 500Gigs 7200rpm - windows 7  and some other windows applications unfortunately a friend bought it for me so he bought it with alot of applications
--the problem is that I've been using arch linux for a year now, and I love it, no experience with laptops, and I intend to keep windows because I purchased for it and I want dual boot with arch so what is the right disk partitioning to install linux and keep windows untouched............ in my old desktop it was only arch and it was like that:
    128 mb ext2 boot
    2048 swap
50000 mb / ext4   and the rest of the disk for home folder, now with dual boot what is the right partitoning?
the second question Does bumblebee work fine with archlinux?
    how to access bios?
Is there any thread to help to install arch on thinkpad t520 in details ?
Do I leave the battery always installed or what?
Last edited by big mac (2012-02-04 13:46:40)

the Arch partition should take some space from the windows7_os partition. You should keep the Lenovo_Recovery partition if you don't have a Windows installation DVD, or if you think you may want to reset your hard drive to its original state someday. In my laptop I have completely removed it.
I have a dual boot of Archlinux/Windows7, and I use the following partitioning
    /dev/sda1   ntfs   60.0GiB   /media/C (for windows os)
    /dev/sda2 (extended partition)
          /dev/sda3   swap   4.0GiB swap
          /dev/sda4   ext4    30.0GiB root
          /dev/sda5   ext4    30.0GiB home
    /dev/sda6   ntfs   376GiB   /media/D
I use the last partition as a shared partition between Arch and Windows, for storing music and videos... I use it also for installing games, so that I  can play them either from windows or from Arch by using wine.
I'm not saying this is the best way to do it, but this has been working for me, also I don't use a separate /boot partition, I used to have it when I had multiple Linux distros, but with Arch alone I don't find it necessary.

  • T420 printing issues

    Hello,
I have a T420 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.  When I print a document, a pdf or doc, it does not print the entire document.  It will print part of it, the top or bottom part. All other computers print documents properly.  The printer is an HP V30.  The T420 recognizes the printer. Device Manager has no yellow ? marks.
So I'm stuck.  Any advice/help would be appreaciated.

Make sure the driver you have installed is the correct one for your HP V30. Now, when I went to the HP site to look for your driver, there was no downloadable version. They offered two alternatives:
Let Winows Update find your V30 driver
Use the driver that can be selected in Windows 7 when installing the printer
    See HPs instructions here
Since I do not know how you installed this printer, it is difficult to comment further from here. For example, did you use an HP software disk that came with a software package or did you use the disk to just install a basic driver. Or did you buy the laptop and printer as a package and the drivers were already installed? The bottom line is you have to make sure you are running the latest drivers for windows 7 64 bit.
Personally, I would uninstall the printer completely (including any software in the add/remove programs) and install the latest driver per HPs instructions.
    Good luck!

  • T420 Game Issue

I have a T420 with the NVIDIA graphics card, Intel core i5 and 8 gig of ram. I was trying to play the game Scourge of War Gettysburg (http://www.scourgeofwar.com/index.shtml) but it will not open. All the further I can get is a screen that says initializing, then it stops on this screen. Nothing else happens until I close it using the task manager. The image doesn’t move or change. The only clues I have are the mouse does not work on the screen and an error message I found using game booster:

  • GS70 Stealth Optimus Issues

    Good Afternoon Eveyone,
When I first got the laptop it would switch over from the Intel Card to the Nvidia card as it should, at least based on the color indicator on the power button.
For some reason, the power button is always glowing red/amber which I believe means that the Nvidia card is in use. Even if I have just booted up the system and have it idling on the home screen it continues to show that the Nvidia card is being used.
Is there anything that I might have done to disable switching over to the other card to save power ?
Also on a smaller note, does anyone else have issues with the spacebar on their unit? For me, the right side of the spacebar does not function unless it is pressed in with a pretty substantial amount of force. The left side works fine but I have always used the right side and it is becoming a hard habit to break.

    Iamexperiencingthesameissueasyou.Icanno tseemtohitthespacebarpropperlywhenmyrig htthumbistotherightofthewhitemark.
However, it works fine whenever I am pressing the spacebar with my left thumb or if I am using the right thumb where the white line is.

  • Does T420S Optimus nvidia controller (nvs 4200m) support 3dvision on an external monitor?

    All:
I use 3dvision for video and photos.  I've tried initially to move my 3dvision compatible monitor to the displayport output on the T420s.  All of the 3dvision software loads but it does not appear that I can shift into the correct video mode.  Does anyone know if this is possible with the NVS 4200m.  The toughest aspect of this mode would be the ability to output 1920x1080x120hz.
    Thanks

Window might not be detecting the display correctly, see if you can find a driver for the monitor. If not you'll have to force it.

  • T420 trackpad issues of a different type

My T420's trackpad seems to 'stick' on use.  By that I mean that if I use it to navigate and then tap for a click (i.e. scroll bar), it then does not recognize further taps unless I first move via the trackpad, which is then also sticky.
This is a royal pain, can it be fixed?

Are you using the TrackPoint mouse buttons (above) with the touchpad?
