T420s sleeps after 2 mins of no activity no matter what power settings. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGH

So this has been the eternal problem with my laptop. No matter what settings for power and battery management they are ignored. the T420s display times out after 2 minutes. plugged in or not, it doesnt care. after 2 mins of no typing the display goes off and it needs password to get back in. I have lived with this for 2 years I have uninstalled and reinstalled power manager, tried everysetting I can find evryewhere. Presentation mode, max battery mode, editted the timing of sleep, hibernation, you name it, set everything to 60 minutes, to "never" sleep. but it just goes off everytime i stop typing. I DREAM about solving this issue. I have accessed the power setting through power manager, throught he control panel. I have looked in the BIOS. I just dont know what else to do.

Hi Ninthtoe,
It’s very simple step you just have to download the iso file and burn it to DVD or to USB and boot from that. If you are willing to do you can check the below link on how to proceed with it.

Hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro's screen goes black after going to sleep and won't turn on no matter what key I press

Hi there, I just got a new Macbook Pro, it's literally six days old. I just got some new memory installed on it and now the screen frequently stays black after it has gone to sleep for several minutes. No key will reawaken my laptop, though the small light indicating power at the bottom right hand corner of the laptop still glows, making me think the laptop is still on. Is this normal? Is there any way to remedy this?

Read the user manual to make sure you installed the ram correctly.  Put the old ram back in.  Same issue?
If you were not the person that installed the ram, return the computer.
    Call Apple Care.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • Screen saver puts monitor to sleep after 5 minutes regardless of settings

Within System Preferences, I have set the Energy Saver to put my display to sleep after 15 minutes of disuse—yet it goes to sleep after 5. I have tried changing the display settings to 30 minutes, 1 hour, Never, etc., and nothing works; it always goes to sleep after 5, even when I have unchecked the selection for putting the hard disc(s) to sleep when possible. Does anyone know what would be causing this or another setting I am somehow overlooking?

  • After 15 mins  with no activity my airport express turns off how can I make it permanent

After about 15 mins with no activity my airport express turns off. How can I make it stay on permanently ?

Not sure what you mean by "turns off".  Are you saying that the light on the Express goes out after 15 minutes?
Assuming that it is functioning correctly, the AirPort Express is "always on". It has no type of "sleep" setting.
If the power light on the Express remains on, you have some other device on the network that is going into a standby mode or sleep mode. Check the Preference settings on other devices on the network.

  • Mac Mini wont' Display Sleep after Yosemite Update

My Mac Mini is no longer going into Display Sleep. Instead I now see the Screen Saver.  I have checked System Preferences | Energy Saver and it is definitely set to Display Sleep after 10 minutes (The default). What is interesting is that if I try to change the Display Sleep time (e.g. to 1 hour), when I go back into Energy Saver, it is back to 10 minutes - this doesn't look right!  In fact none of the options (e.g. Wake on LAN) seem to stay changed.
This seemed to start after the update to Yosemite 10.10.1 a few days ago - but that might be coincidental. Until then Display Sleep had worked fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Nick

  • HP Pavilion DV6 Sleep Mode Issue After Windows 10 Upgrade (Goes To Sleep After 2 Min Of Inactivity)

I recently upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The upgrade went smooth and everything appears to be running fine except for one anoying glitch. After approx. 2 min of inactivity my laptop atuomatically goes into sleep mode and logs me out. I have checked all my power settings/sleep settings/screen saver settings...etc and I have completed all the windows updates. I don't see any timers anywhere that require adjustment. Any help would be appreciated. Note: The laptop wakes up fine with no issues.

Hello Konacha, Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!I have read your thread regarding the computer entering sleep mode, upon Administrative prompts or a restart. There isn't a lot that could be done, but by the end of it, the issue should be resolved  Hopefully, the simple fix is creating a new power plan. Your current power plan may be incorrectly configured. This Microsoft website can help with all the details of this task: Change, create, or delete a power plan (scheme)  If that doesn't help, then personally, I would reinstall the operating system. This will fix it, as it will address any software conflict or virus that could be causing this. First, you should backup your data. I will provide information on how to do that: Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7) Once this is done, it is safe to do the System Recovery. Here is some information on how to do this: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7) Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks again for posting, and have a great day! Mario

  • I lose my printer on the network after mini goes to sleep

After upgrading to Mavericks I started have two issues. One was that my Apple mail wasn't picking up the mail properly from my Gmail account. That issue has since been remedied by an Apple tech. The tech had me delete my account in Mail and delete some files from a system folder and re-create the account in Mail and the issue went away. The second issue is that my printer is lost on the network every time my mini goes to sleep. The printer is a HP P2015dn. I have have it for several years and it works perfectly when I can see it on the network. I have tried connecting directly to the mini via ethernet and the same thing happens. Every time I want to use it I have to delete it from the printer list, restart the printer, it takes several minutes to appear on the printer list again, and printing works works fine until the mini goes to sleep – after waking I get the error  "printer not connected" when i try to print.
I called Apple and they said to download/install the latest driver for the printer but HP says the latest driver is included in the latest version of Mavericks - which I have. My next stop is the Genius Bar but willing to give this forum a shot first.

  • Mail prevents sleep and causes permanent disc activity

    Hello!
Since some time my Macbook Pro won't sleep automatically when Mail is open, regardless of battery use or plugged in. Before upgrading to Lion, this was not an issue.
As soon as I quit Mail, it goes to sleep after the specified time. Other programs do not seem to interfer with sleep.
I noted that the disc is spinning and working constantly.

This activity is present as long as mail is open.
Could this be the reason for not-sleeping? And how do i resolve this?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks a lot in advance!

After some lengthy protocol studies I noticed that the file activity kept going back to a specific group of attachments. I re-checked in mail and deleted the problematic mail. Since then I did not notice any more suspicious file activity in fs_usage for mail.
What remains is the issue of the sleep timer and the mail retrieving rhythm:
When I now set the Mail timer for retrieving mail to 5 mins and leave the sleep timer at 10 mins, the computer does not go to sleep. Setting Mail to 15 mins and sleep to 10 mins the macbook eventually goes to sleep - as at some point the mail timer has to be slower than the sleep timer.
So this solves the issue for me but leaves me with a less frequent mail retrieval. Oh well...
Maybe this helps someone else with a similar problem!

  • Is there a way to put system to sleep after Time Machine runs?

I don't need to run Time Machine every hour, especially since my TM disk is on Firewire and not built in (had a disk fail with TM volume on same disk - bad idea)
When TM runs, it has to spin up the Firewire external disk, so I just run TM by hand now. I'd like to do this when I go to dinner or to sleep etc
Is there a way to have the Mac system sleep after Time Machine finishes running?  An AppleScript perhaps?
    thanks

    William Donelson wrote:
Nope, there is an error message and TM does not automatically run when the drive comes back online.
    What is the error message?
I have not seen one, and that is exactly how I use TM. Unmount, turn off the drive. Turn on the drive, the backup volume mounts automatically and TM resumes its scheduled backups.
Your Console logs will reveal the times in which TM attempted to back up but could not find the device:
    Dec 21 10:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd[1216]: Starting automatic backup
    Dec 21 10:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd[1216]: Backup failed with error: 1002
Dec 21 10:23:07 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd-helper[1198]: Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume.
Dec 21 11:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd-helper[1408]: Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
The last entry will repeat every hour, until it finds the TM device. Its normally scheduled activity will resume when it does.
" Web pages that refresh themselves can prevent sleep..." such as the NY Times home page...

  • How can I put my iMac to sleep after it has finished downloading or uploading something?

For example: I have some photos and videos that I want to send to a friend. I'm uploading them to a site to do this, and they're quite big files (250 MB).
I'd like to do this at night, but I don't want to let the computer run all the night through, when this maybe only needs a few hours.
I can only guess how long it will take (judging by the time it tells me that it will take, if available), and then I can set the computer to go to sleep after X hours or minutes.
Can I not just simply set it in a way that it goes to sleep automatically after the process is finished? Like, if there's a connection to the internet, that is being used (downloads, uploads), then it shouldn't go to sleep, else it will interrupt the upload, and I can start again.
Also, I have an iMovie update now, which is over a GB of download.
I may be mistaken, but I have the feeling that for some Apple programs, it actually keeps the computer awake until the process is done. But it isn't the case with all programs, only with some.
It's really annoying. Does anyone know a solution? I know that there's this box that you can tick, that says something like to keep the computer from going to sleep if there's a network connection, but in earlier OS this was actually working! Now it's 100% useless.

You can just set your Mac to sleep using the Energy Saver in System Pref.  Set it to sleep after say, 2 mins of inactivity then check the Put Hard Disk to Sleep setting too.  It won't sleep while you are down/uploading.

  • Display no longer wakes from sleep after latest updates

    G4 Quicksilver 933, nVidia Ti, 1.5GB, 20in Cinema Display
I applied the latest updates that were pushed out recently (10.5.2 and the "Leopard Graphics Update") and now my Apple display will not properly come up when I wake the box from suspend.
That is, it starts and runs fine, but if it goes into sleep, upon waking it will (sometimes) flash the contents of the desktop, and then go black. The litte green light is on. Happens from a logged in session, or from the main login screen.
I have to hit the reset or power button (or login via SSH and issue a shutdown) to get it to work again.
I only have a single monitor.
    I tried:
o Powering the monitor off and on, both from the switch and by pulling the power cable
o Pulling the DVI cable and reinserting it
    o Resetting NVRAM
o Re-applying both the 10.5.2 combo installer and the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 in order
o Waving a magic wand... I mean, fixing permissions
o Changing the display resolution a few times
o Running fsck a few times (only because all these unclean shutdowns are making me nervous)
o Hitting the "Detect Displays" button in the Displays Prefs panel...
Aha! Hitting that button causes the display to flash and then go dark. I have to power cycle the unit to get the monitor to come up again.
I do have the special build option of the faster video adapter which was available all those years ago. It's quaint now, sure, but it was a fast card back then.
I'm stumped. It's surprising how something like this can turn a perfectly reasonable desktop into a boat anchor.

This Discussion is marked as Answered, but with my apologies to the other respondents, it is NOT. There is a problem. The software/hardware do NOT work as they are supposed to. Apple needs to address this problem immediately. Mac Book Pro will not wake from sleep when connected to a Cinema Display 23". The problem lies in the most recent operating system updates. Before the update the products worked as advertised, since then they do not. Period.
With all due respect, I am the one who posted this, and I marked it "answered." Yes, there very well may be a problem with the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 (what a mouthful! I dub it "LGU v1.0" from this point on.), but this is so far only a hypothesis.
I found an immediate workaround which suits my purpose. If this does not suit the purposes of completely foreign (to this discussion) symptoms related to Intel-based Apple laptops and external displays, then so be it. I recommend splitting off your own symptoms to a new thread.
Certainly, my reading of the symptoms described after I posted mine mostly do not sound like what I ran into at all. For example, I never once said that my computer had problems waking from sleep. I said the /display/ had problems waking/starting up after sleep, and this is probably related to the "detect displays" mechanism that the OS uses to find attached displays when it comes out of suspend. Even if this is my misunderstanding it does not matter, since this is how it comes across to a reader. This may indicate that someone may want to clearly and carefully describe /exactly/ what they are seeing, and the steps they took in order to come to any conclusions they might have.
This will help Apple, and it will certainly help others that search these threads with their own similar but different issues they need solved.
If there is a common reproducible issue related to displays and the most recent update(s), then Apple already knows about it, or soon will. As far as my immediate needs are concerned, this is answered.
