T420s + SSD extremly slow start from hibernate

Hey folks,
I recently bought a T420s with 80GB SSD and 320GB HDD.Besides the fan noise issue and the crappy display I am at least really happy with the speed - except the following problem: Whenever I want to rewake the notebook from hibernate it takes extremly long, even longer than a normal windows start up - and longer than my 5 year old sony vaio. When loading it displays the Windows 7 animation, having returned to the desktop screen it works immediatly well.
I'd be glad if there were any suggestions to solve this problem!
Thank you!
Chris

The hiberfil.sys is a hidden file that is located on the root of your boot drive. I guess that would be C:\hiberfil.sys. If you enter command prompt and type "dir c:\ /a" im sure you will find the file. Or change the settings so Windows explorer will see hidden and system files.
Using a SSD each NAND cell can be erased a limited number of times before it stops reliably holding charge which means it becomes unusable. So you have a limited number of writes using a SSD before it will die. A lot of people sugguest to not use hibernation when using a SSD to prevent additional writes that will wear out the SSD faster. It's not like the SSD will die in a few months, but it will last longer will less writing. So you might want to consider using hibernate or not. Except from standby or a shutdown there is no other options to hibernate.
Why it's so slow i don't know and cannot compare since i do have a SSD, but do not use hibernate. How long does it take? Did you do a clean install using the Windows 7 DVD and is the SSD performing fast except for the hibernate?

  • Extremely slow download from Itunes store when on NAS

    Hi All,
Since the latest Itunes update 10.6 I've been experiencing extremely slow download from the store. Set up is as follows (with all the latest firmware and software upgrades done on everything)
ITunes DB and XML locally stored on HDD
Itunes Media Folder stored on NAS DNS-323
DNS 323 NAS hardwired to network by 1000 Gb LAN Connection
         Cabled Internet connection at 60Mbps
There is no issue running Itunes from the NAS to MAC / APPLETV and other devices across the network wirelessly or hardwired, except when downloading purchases from the ITunes Store. One HD tv show takes 4 hours to download and averages 1Mbps speed.
After running some test with various configuration it seems that the fact that the Downloads folder located within the ITunes Media folder (now stored on the NAS) is causing the poor download speed. When the Download folder is local on a HDD  it's got no problem reaching 60Mbps.
Unfortunately there is no way to tell ITunes to keep the Downloads folder local and the ITunes Media folder on NAS, it always stays within the Itunes Media folder no matter where this folder is located.
Permitting Itunes to keep the Downloads folder locally while downloading files and transferring the files to the ITunes Media folder (wherever it's located) once it's fully downloaded might be the simple solution to this common problem.
How about testing this out Apple!

I have some information to add to this.  I've been seeing these problems for quite some time since I started downloading in HD.  My library is rather large so I too decided to use another drive.  My case is different though I have and extra 2 TB internal drive and my media folder is on it.  This rules out all Wifi, network, or USB bottlenecks as a cause of the problem.  I have noted a few oddities about this behavior and I will mention them here although I am not sure what they mean.
    1.  If I set up a long list of downloads it seems to crawl on all downloads.  If I kill the "apple push" process the top two seem to speed up.  I have to maintain the list and only enable two downloads at a time to get anywhere near reasonble speeds but this method is great for one or two downloads at a time.
    2.  I was curious about this problem after watching it download for hours on a 24MBPS connection for just a few shows.  When I did yet another search I finally found this thread so I thought checking something out might be interesting.  I set up some HD movies to download on my secondary system that only has one hard drive.  Although not at full speed they began downloading much faster.  Three movies are all downloading on the single drive system faster than the one alone on the system with the Itunes media folder on a different drive.
Both systems are hard wired to the internet.
Finding this thread made me very curious I was wondering if there would be a performance boost if I uninstalled Itunes, and re-installed it on the media drive.  I really wanted that drive to be storage only but it makes me wonder if it would give different results or the same problem from not being on the OS drive.
Both systems are running Windows 7, and both are able to download streaming content, large files, or movies from other sites relatively instantly.

  • TS3274 Extremely Slow Starting Up

I have an iPad 2nd Generation that is extremely slow starting up.  I have made sure that all apps are closed and all software is up to date.  Any ideas?

Before you do anything else backup your computer.
Next run Apple Hardware Test 3x back to back in extended mode. If any errors appear this confirms a hardware issue and a repair is necessar. Please post back after running AHD in extended mode 3x back to back.

  • MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!

    Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'm not too Mac savvy, so the help is very much appreciated. So here's what I've done...
Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
    Reset P-Ram.
    Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
    Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
    The battery condition is normal
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5420
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5482
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          806
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12401
I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal.  I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

  • Starting Virtual Machine will not start from hibernate mode.

Hi.  I had a BSOD and upon rebooting my machine one of my virtual machines is stuck in "hibernate" mode and will not boot up.
I attempted to restore to previous versions of the vmc, but that did not work.
    The error i receive is.
    "Could not enable integration functions"
    Retry or Continue.
Selecting "Continue" states "the operation failed.  The virtual machine is not running"
Does anyone have any idea how to get a VPC up and running from this situation?

  • How to fix extremely slow printing from web pages with latest updates (iMac) & HP Office jet printer. (It was not a problem with earlier versions of Firefox & same computer & printer.)

The latest two updates of Mozilla Firefox are not useful for me because of extremely slow printing of web pages. It was never a problem before. Same iMac and HP officejet printer. How can I either fix it, or revert to an earlier version of the browser (without losing all my bookmarks) which didn't cause this problem?

Try scanning from your Mac.  Use Image Capture app in your Applications folder.
Click once on the scanner on the left side, then click on Show Details along the bottom.  Along the right side you will see LOTS of options for scanning and saving.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Extremely Slow Internet From Linksys WRTU54G-TM

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue. I got the Linksys WRTU54G-TM for T-Mobile's @home service. According to the store employees, I should be able to just plug it in and it should work. I got it home, disconnected my old router (a Linksys WRT54G) and plugged it in. After a few minutes, the phone was up and working and sounds good; however, the internet coming off of the router is extremely slow (both wired and wirelessly). So slow that pages won't load. The title bar will tell you where you're trying to go; however the page will not load.
Before calling for help, I contacted my internet provider (Cox Cable in Phoenix) and verified that the network was working and that my modem (Terayon brand) was good. When I hook the modem directly to the computer I get my full connection (around 20 megs down). Then I called T-Mobile and was connected to Linksys since the router was connecting and providing phone service.
I spent an hour on the phone with Linksys. We flashed the firmware to the latest build, reset the modem to factory settings, reset the modem via the button on the back all the while power cycling the whole setup numerous times. The rep had me check some settings on my computer and I was able to ping from the cmd prompt. In the end, she felt that I received a bad router and said I should return it. She never mentioned cloning the MAC address; however, I saw that on the T-Mobile forums and tried it - no luck.
I took the router back to the T-Mobile store and the rep happily exchanged my router for a new one. I got it home, plugged it in and have the same problem. Phone works, internet doesn't pass through the router properly.
I went ahead and flashed the new router and reset it factory settings and that did not help (all the things I did with the Linksys rep with the first router). I'm going to be calling T-Mobile/Linksys again tomorrow but I wanted to see if there was anything anyone in these forums may know what I could try.
With the second router, I did try plugging it into my old router (modem - old router - new router), the phone worked and the internet worked (both wired and wireless); however, the internet is not as quick as going through one router and I do not want to have two routers set up.
Secondly, I looked at the configuration of my old one and set the new one to the same exact settings; however, one setting could not be matched. My old router is set to an operating mode of GATEWAY, the new one is set as ROUTER. The only options on the new one are router and bridge. Could this be the issue?
It was recommend on the T-Mobile forums to run a speed test and post the results, which I can do tonight after I get home from work.
I've searched these forums, Google, the T-Mobile forums, the Cox forums at dslreports.com, and tons of other places and cannot find an answer. Based on the size of Cox, it's hard to believe I'm the only one with this issue. Any help would be appreciated. I have until Sunday to return the router and cancel the service without any termination fees.

Try the following settings on the router...
Change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz under Wireless tab...Under Advance Wireless Settings,Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304.Under Security tab, uncheck the option "Block Anonymous Internet Requests "...Power Cycle the router and check..

  • MacBook Pro Running EXTREMELY Slow (Information from EtreCheck attached). HELP!

    Problem description:
I am having issues with my mac becoming extremely SLOW. I upgraded the RAM (Doubled it up) and it was working well for a while, but it’s now back to being extremely slow. I noticed the change when I upgraded to Mavericks. I’m still running Mavericks and haven’t upgraded to Yosemite yet.
What could be causing this to happen? SO slow and keep in mind I'm usually always multi-tasking when operating my laptop.
If you can offer any suggestions then please let me know!
    Thanks in advance,

Your startup disk has no free space!

You need to spend some time removing files you no longer need. I'd suggest you reboot & connect an external HD, then slowy start copying files off this Mac. You need to take care because the Mac can run out of memory & put you into a 'must reboot now' situation, don't forget to delete files once they are copied off the system. Reboot to keep the memory usage to a minimum.
You need at least 20GB free at all times to allow the Mac some breathing room for temporary files & virtual memory storage. More free space is better, especially on spinning disks.
There are many tips on this site for removing old files & finding large files or folders
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html (and search this site).
These two can also help to find large files & folders.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
    http://whatsizemac.com/
See Király's post for a way to make these apps search all folders (by default it will be limited by your permissions).
drive space not adding up - deleted user?
Don't forget that certain apps have their own 'trash' so open iPhoto, iMovie or any other app that has it's own trash & check the built in trash is empty, otherwise the items in the trash will be taking up disk space.
I'd also consider removing any of the system modifications you do not use, like Blackberry's software, Citrix, Toast's extensions. Otherwise check that the installed versions are up to date & compatible with the OS. http://roaringapps.com can indicate if other users are happy with these apps on your OS.

  • Anyone experiencing extremely slow downloads from Apple?

For the past 48hrs or so I've been unable to stream or download HD Video from iTunes store or iCloud on any of my devices, Apple TV's or Computers.
Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other HD Streaming services unaffected.  Internet up and running 45Mbps connection, working great. only thing affected is content from Apple, specifically content purchased and on iCloud.  iCloud account fine, Apple ID account fine.  Can access Apple.com, iTunes Store, Apple Store, Communities, and content, however, streaming, downloads extremely slow, almost unresponsive....
Is anyone aware of any slowdown issues, servers down, or other issues affecting access to content?
You know because Apple is always so forthcoming on these issues!
So far Ive found no mention of any issues in any of the communities....
    Thank You.

Apparently Adobe is having server problems. Other users have reported problems today.

  • Latest iTunes version: extremely slow start-up

    My set-up:
    - Windows 8.1 Pro x64
    - iTunes 11.1.2 x64
    - large MP3 collection (hundreds of GBs... don't ask how)
    - Moved Music library from C: drive to D: drive
The combination of Windows 8.1 and iTunes 11.1.2 or either of them, causes iTunes
to start up very very slow.
I deleted my iTunes library and started from scratch, but no effect. My iTunes library (under Music) doesn't
contain the songs, just links to another folder on another drive (fixed harddisk).
After you start iTunes, you see the memory usage slowly crawling to 250 MB, then it starts and works.
    But it takes 3-4 minutes.
    What's new ?

    Apple just released 11.1.3
    From the release notes:
This version of iTunes resolves an issue where the equalizer may not work as expected and improves performance when switching views in large iTunes libraries. This update also includes additional minor bug fixes.
I can confirm that my issue has been solved. iTunes loads after a few seconds and switching view doesn't crash it anymore.
    Thanks Apple !!

  • Extremely slow downloads from cloud

When updating and downloading from adobe cloud through the adobe viewer on iPad, the downloads are extremely slow and unstable, making updates and proofing a nightmare.
All other network funtionality is fine, it's only this proces and it's company wide, whether at home or office.
is this a universal problem? Any fixes?
    thanks!

  • Extreme slow start up, even after reinstallation of OS

My MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) started to take several minutes to start up. The desktop comes up but the menus and dock are completely frozen for 3-5 minutes. All I can do is move around the pointer. After a long long wait, everything is back to normal and the computer works just fine.
After freeing up space, turning of start-up applications, verifying the disk with Disk utility, SMART Utility etc without improvement (disk ok),  I erased the disk completely and reinstalled OS X (version 10.6.8) from original CD. I had to try this 6 times before installation was successful, it just kept freezing in the middle of the installation so I had to start from the beginning erasing the disk. Finally the installation was successful but the same problem persists with 5 minutes frozen desktop after start-up. After that the computer works perfectly. Anybody had a similar experience?

Since a brand new, clean OS install is not working right, you should verify there is no hardware issue.
Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and was included with your computer.

  • Dreamweaver CC extremely slow start up

Dreamweaver CC does eventually open, but it stays on the splash screen for about 5 minutes before launching.
I've tried removing the OOBE folders, using the CC Cleaner Tool to remove Dreamweaver and also deleted my saved website/ftp setup inside the program.
    Nothing is working, please help!

Reinstalling via the Cleaner Tool is generally a last resort that clears up any possible problem cause by a faulty installation/corruption within the program.

  • Issues: extremely slow start up, occasional green fuzzy screen, doesn't always hibernate and overheats

First off, I should say that I'm not the type of person to shutdown my computer. If anything, I shut it to hiberate. I'm not sure if that's bad pratice or if that's what lead to this over time.. So here's what happens.. Today, I was working away and all of a sudden a fuzzy screen comes up with a little bit of green and then a beeping sound. So I shut it off. This is rare, sometimes the fuzzy screen comes up for a second randomly or when I open my computer from hiberate mode or when I'm just using the computer.
When I turn my computer on,
    1. sometimes the 'on' button doesn't work and it takes a few tries (however this hasn't happened in the past few weeks. *knock on wood*)
Once the computer is on the blue screen comes up:
    2. which stays on for anywhere from 5-20 minutes.
    3. Log in appears with the cursor blinking but I actually can't type anything.. It lags behind sometimes another 20 minutes before my password appears and I could log on.
Checking the message board for similar questions it was recommended that I update the software.
I've tried to get Mavericks on here but I get an error message when it tries to restart the computer and never does so successfully on its own.
I've helped it along and was able to attempt at installing it but I waited a least an hour for it to 'find my disks' with no luck I went the disk utility repair route istead of time machine backup which couldn't find my external or anything for that matter.
The error message I got back was:
invalid block count It should be 21066078 instead of 21066076. Found corrupt needs to be repaired.
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Below is my EtreCheck.

    Simska,
regarding the overheating, you can try resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller.
Regarding the invalid block count, you should boot from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro, run Disk Utility from it (via the Utilities menu in the menu bar), and select Repair Disk for your internal disk.
After your disk is repaired, exit Disk Utility and restart from your internal disk. When you log in, you should uninstall your installed version of iPhoto Photocast — it was written to work with the Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) SDK, but you have Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8) installed, so it’s not supported under Snow Leopard. Install in its place an older version of iPhoto Photocast which is compatible with Snow Leopard. You also have an outdated version of Silverlight installed — you can download the most recent version from here.

  • Extreme slow upload from cf card

Hi, dont know if this is to do with Mac, card reader or card.
2G CF card with photos on took 1 hour to upload. Is this slow because of my machine (have 1gb of ram) or could my card reader (Mikomi 5 in 1) be the cause? Card is a sandisk extreme 11 and takes only a few minutes to up load onto PC. Had no other applications running at the time. Seems very slow, would really appreciate comments thanks

    Sorry to worry you Sharron!
I did a bit more research and it looks like the limiting factor is your CF card itself. USB 2.0 supports a peak speed of 480Mbit/s (= 60MB/s) which is why I initially thought 12 minutes seemed a bit slow. It seems your CF card has a maximum transfer speed of 15MB/s, so this makes the 12 minutes sound better to me (still not as quick as it theoretically could work).
Next time try plugging it directly into the back of the machine (if you can) to see if it's any quicker, as the keyboard is in essence just another hub.
USB relies on a bit of help from the CPU so if you're running something very CPU intensive then uploading then may be a bit slower.
Edit: And to answer your last question, it might help to have a bit more memory installed as if you're using large photo manipulation programs, then your Mac may need to use virtual memory which could possibly use a bit more CPU power. I'm just guessing here, so don't take my word for it though!
