T420s SSD max capacity?

Hi,
I bought a Crucial M4 256GB SSD and tried to upgrade the 128GB SSD on my Lenovo T420s laptop.
I basically did the following steps: 1) cloned my old drive over, 2) increased the primary parition to about 220GB, 3) put in new SSD and perform Startup Repair. However, Windows never boots up, but I instead get a black screen with a blinking cursor.
After reading about the cause of this, one possible cause is that there could be a capacity limit for the SSD (e.g. 160 GB). Is this true? If so, is there some firmware update workaround? I read through the manuals but couldn't find any indication of this.
Thanks for any help!

There should be no problem using a 256GB Crucial M4 in a T420s. (I have one in a T430s.)
It's possible that there was a problem with cloning. The best way to do it is to put the new drive in the T420s HDD bay and your current 128GB SSD in a USB external enclosure.
Boot from the old drive. You may have to override the default boot sequence at startup. Then run the clone software.
When you're done, disconnect the USB-attached drive and reboot. If you didn't change the primary partition size during the cloning you can do it now using Windows 7/8 Disk Management.

  • Satellite A500-1DU - What is HDD max capacity

    Hello,
I have to re-install the factory installed Win 7 on my Satellite A500-1DU because I am not able to install SP1.
The cause is that the product information inside Win 7 is missing.
Regarding this I like to install a new HDD with more capacity (current 400gb).
Which HDD can I install and what is the max capacity (1TB, 750gb)?
    BIOS is current.
    Any hint is welcome.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi
From my knowledge there is no limitation in HDD capacity since the SATA controller is used and the SATA controller should support more than 400GB.

  • My battery has a current max capacity of 97% after only 2 month ...

    Hi everyone.
I don't know if I'm a little bit paranoid but I just checked the current max capacity of my battery (Macbook Pro 2012 13") with different softwares as Battery Health or Battery Guard (available on the App Store) and it reads 97% after only 2 month and 3 cycles ... Is it normal?
I'm kinda worried, the loss of capacity seems so fast, to me ...
More details : this capacity was 100.6% just before I tried to calibrate it. I followed the advices of Battery Health :
    1) Charge the battery until 100%, then wait 2 hours with the Macbook plugged
    2) Use it, until it shuts down by itself, then let the Macbook 5 hours at least without charging it again
    3) Charge the Macbook until 100% again
After this manipulation, my max capacity lost 3 percent ... Is this something I did? Is it normal?
Does the Macbook have to calibrate his battery again? Then, what's the manipulation to do to calibrate it (I looked for it on the Apple website, but I can't find a step-by-step)?
    Thank you all

Battery capacity degrades over the life of the battery for a lot of reasons and will fluctuate from day-to-day by a percent or two.  Instead of using apps to read the battery, you can get all the info you need right from the system itself.  Click the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and then just read the battery Capacity, charge Cycles, Condition, and Voltage.  As long as the Condition is Normal you are fine.
Although Apple says to calibrate the battery by discharging to shutoff and then recharge, that in reality is not good for Lithium-technology, and it does not calibrate the battery, it calibrates the charge reporting circuitry.
If you go to the Battery University site, an independent group that has done a lot of studies of batteries, you can find information on prolonging Lithium-technology battery life.  One thing that is clear is that deep discharge cycles are very degrading on battery life.  Optimum balance of use/life seems to be around a discharge to 50% and then recharge.  Also, temperature is a major player in shortening battery life.
At thiis point, don't get too hung up on the battery capacity, use the MBP and enjoy it.

  • Max capacity of Mini SD for N80?

Hi there, can anyone tell me the max capacity the N80 can take please? I heard a 2Gb will work but would a 4Gb or larger? (although not available yet i don't think)? Many thanks ;o)

no, the point is your making a mistake.
nokia support the minisd format, it can fit in the phone and the phone can read it. the point you are failing to make is why can it not read every minisd card and why can it not read all capacities.
the phone cwill have trouble opening larger capacity cards as the software (symbian) cannot cope with it. we are only just seeing 4gb in the n91 - it will take some time for greater memory cards to be supported.
your point on cd rom is wrong, there are a number of different ISO standards, not all devices will play them. it is the same as dvd...
you may be better off saying my pc has a 144 dimm slot, therefore it should use all types of dimm together, be they ddr400 ddr800 or rdram.
you are also mistaken that nokia phones only work with nokia cards, they just tell you dont expect to get support when your card doesnt work. rufao is correct in saying this, if nokia dont make the card, and the card doesnt work (but the nokia one that came with it does) then why should they pat money to support it?
again, lets look at your point on sony, are they not about to release a hi-dvd format that only their players use and they support? are they not about to enter into a format war over blu-ray?
all in all patc, all your arguments are incorrect. nokia phones can read minisd cards, not all cards are compatible and this is why many third party sites offer a compatibility list.
for example, i have a 2gb minisd in my phone it works as the phone can handle that amount of memory. for my psp i bought a sandisk 4gb stick - it doesnt work..... so who do i blame

  • Current Capacity Max Capacity

    Hi,
i am working on weblogic 8.1 sp5 ,with the following configuration:
    initial Capacity =20
    max Capacity =20
    Capacity Increment:2
    after fail over operation
i got that the current Capacity of the pool become 22 which is bigger than max Capacity
is there a specail problem with this veriosn of weblogic or how can i explain this ?
    Thanks in advance

    Joe,
Thanks for the reply. The reason why we switched from initial capacity = max capacity stratgey was because of the database issues that we encountered. There was significant DB proceses (resource) consumption although when only 1/4 of connections (in turn db resources) would have been sufficient. I fail to understand why the approach as specified in the current config is not working as desired. You have mentioned about a possibility of a bug. Can you please elaborate or point me to right documentation?
Also, why is the connection pool itself getting closed frequently (possibly every transaction)?

  • Calibrating Lowered Max Capacity

I had never calibrated my 1.5 year old Macbook Pro before. I checked the max capacity and it was at 97% of the 4600mAh design capacity. I followed the calibration instructions to a "T" and now it says the max is only 92%. What happened??

You're battery reading is more accurate. You didn't lose anything.

  • Max capacity of ufs filesystem

What the max capacity of ufs filesystem in solaris for sparc?
Can it be lager than 10TB?

    From "man ufs":
    Multiterabyte File System
A multiterabyte file system enables creation of a UFS file
system up to approximately 16 terabytes of usable space,
minus approximately one percent overhead. A sparse file can
have a logical size of one terabyte. However, the actual
amount of data that can be stored in a file is approximately
one percent less than one terabyte because of file system
    overhead.
.. looks like it, i would advise against it though.

  • K8n neo2 hard drive max capacity problem

My 160 gig hard drive shows a max capacity of 33 gigs.  I've read on the Western Digital support site that it's a Bios issue.  I'm using the 1.1 bios.
When I try to reinstall the hd, i make the boot disk using the Data Lifeguard tools, but when i try to boot from either the floppy or even the cd itself, some informations shows up in dos while it's loading the program, but the program never actually starts.  The HD has the Master jumper setting as it is the only hd on that IDE cable, my raptor is in sata port 3.
    Any Ideas?

To get 48 bit addressing needed to access more than 128 GB, you need Windows XP SP1 or 2 or Windows 2000 SP3 or 4. You also have to add a registry entry - see
    http://www.48bitlba.com/enablebiglba.htm or http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;305098
I'm not sure why you don't see 128 GB unless you are using an older version of windows (is this the case?). I would expect any motherboard  made in the last year, especially the Nforce 3 motherboard, to handle the 48-bit addressing.  I would suggest checking the drive jumpering very carefully, noting as one of the other posters has indicated, that the WD drives are jumpered differently for master with slave or master by itself. Normally, I prefer to use Cable select with the 80 wire/40 pin ultra ata type cables. This way one can move drives around without changin the jumpers. Also, it is easy to tell which drive is the master (the one on the end of the cable).
Another solution is to use a Promise Ultra100 TX2 or equivalent controller. The promise driver handles the 48 bit addressing.

  • Max capacity SSD drive in T440p Ultrab

My advice:  Buy a 1TB Samsung EVO at Amazon or somewhere local if you have a place.  Image your existing drive to it, and swap it out.  And keep your optical drive.
That Lenovo drive is way, way, way overpriced.

  • T420s SSD support - it's urgent!

    hey guys,
i'm about to aqcuire a new SSD for my T420s...
It looks like the only two options are Intel 320 (that isn't in stock atm) and Samsung 830/840 SSD - that is.
There's also the Intel 520 SSD, but from what i have understood - it's not supported. right?
Should I go with the Samsung 840? What about it's compatibility with my laptop? - MAIN QUESTION
    Thanks!
    Edit for future readers:
I went with the Samsung 840 PRO 128GB SSD (7mm) - great choice, highly recommended.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi guyhimmel,
The specs match up so the Samsung 840, 2.5" wide - 7mm high, will work out in your system.
The read and write speeds are best on the Intel 520 and it looks like its supported too.
The only thing is that the 520 is a SATA 3 and the T420s maxes out at SATA 2.
So it would never run at full SATA 3 performance.
But you do get multiple and larger capacity drives.
Intel 320 - slowest read/write but largest capacity is 600gig
Intel 520 - fastest read/write and largest capacity is 480gig
    Samsung 840 - read/write like Intel 520 and largest capacity is 512gig
All will work with your T420s.
    Hope this helps.

  • Max capacity of RAM for Satellite A100 PSAANH-04Y03F?

    Hello,
I have finally decided to upgrade the ram from my A100 that I bought back in 2007.
The problem is that I don't how what the maximum capacity is.
I suspect that it is 2GB, but I'm curious about if it'll take 4GB.
The reason why I haven't found any information myself is because I have no clue what model my A100 is.
It says "Satellite A100 SYSTEM UNIT MODEL NO. *PSAANH-04Y03F*" on the bottom of the notebook.
Googling that gives me 0 search results :/
    Help would be greatly appreciated!

What chipset has been built in the notebook?
The max RAM depends on the chipset.
You can use an tool like *Everest Home Edit* to check the chipset.
Then you could search for chipset properties.

  • Max capacity for sd card slot Mac Mini mid 2010

Has anyone with a MAC Mini mid 2010 tried using the SD card slot for an extended drive?  I'm wondering what the max size is for the slot, and if I put a 64-128 gig SD Card in, would OS X 10.8.2 be able to combine that with an internal HD to create a "fusion drive"?

Your Mid 2010 Mac mini doesn't support SDXC, so you can't use this type of cards. Fusion Drive needs an SSD and a hard drive on the same Mac mini, so an SD won't work with this

  • T420s + SSD extremly slow start from hibernate

    Hey folks,
I recently bought a T420s with 80GB SSD and 320GB HDD.Besides the fan noise issue and the crappy display I am at least really happy with the speed - except the following problem: Whenever I want to rewake the notebook from hibernate it takes extremly long, even longer than a normal windows start up - and longer than my 5 year old sony vaio. When loading it displays the Windows 7 animation, having returned to the desktop screen it works immediatly well.
I'd be glad if there were any suggestions to solve this problem!
    Thank you!
    Chris

The hiberfil.sys is a hidden file that is located on the root of your boot drive. I guess that would be C:\hiberfil.sys. If you enter command prompt and type "dir c:\ /a" im sure you will find the file. Or change the settings so Windows explorer will see hidden and system files.
Using a SSD each NAND cell can be erased a limited number of times before it stops reliably holding charge which means it becomes unusable. So you have a limited number of writes using a SSD before it will die. A lot of people sugguest to not use hibernation when using a SSD to prevent additional writes that will wear out the SSD faster. It's not like the SSD will die in a few months, but it will last longer will less writing. So you might want to consider using hibernate or not. Except from standby or a shutdown there is no other options to hibernate.
Why it's so slow i don't know and cannot compare since i do have a SSD, but do not use hibernate. How long does it take? Did you do a clean install using the Windows 7 DVD and is the SSD performing fast except for the hibernate?
