T420s with large external monitor

I have a 420s with Intel HD 3000 graphics and would like to connect my 30in external monitor (NEC 3090). However the highest resolution I am able to select is 1920x1080 (wrong aspect ratio). I tried both the latest Lenovo drivers and the latest Intel drivers.
My research suggests that 1920x1200 should be supported, and that HD 3000 can technically support my monitors native 2560x1600 via displayport..
Attempts to create a custom resolution results in an error (something about lack of bandwidth). (Note that the T420s usually drives dual monitors - a 24in 1920x1080 (DVI) plus a 1280x1024 (VGA) - so I doubt that just going from 1080 to 1200 busts a bandwidth limit)
I tried both direct DVI (dual link) and displayport (to DVI via HDMI adapter) (using dock)  but nothing allows me to see any option beyond 1920x1080.
1) What is the real limit on supported resolution for T420s?
2) If it's more than 1920x1080, how do I make it work?
THANKS!

Thanks again.
The NEC3090wxqi is a 30" monitor which normally supports 2560x1600, (it has dual DVI, no displayport)
The Lenovo 420s 4174 spec clearly states that 1920x1200 is supported, Here:
http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/t420s_tech_specs.pdf
However when I try to force 1920x1200 (using a custom resolution from the Intel graphics panel), I get a "exceeds bandwidth" message. Note that I normally drive a dual monitor setup: 1920x1080 PLUS 1280x1024 (using DVI and VGA from the dock),  so I doubt that is a true physical limit.
(I also tried the latest Intel driver but that did not change anything.)
Is this a driver issue? Is there a registry edit that might remove this limitation?

  • Considering using 20" Imac with larger external monitor - good idea?

I've just returned my 24" Imac for a refund due to the uneven brightness issue. I want a set up for my illustration work, but can't justify the price of a mac pro + monitor. Therefore I'm considering a 20" Imac 2.4 GHZ, and connecting an external 23/24" monitor that has better consistent brightness than the Imac screens, e.g. the Dell 2407WFP-HC or an 23" Apple cinema display. The idea is that, any problems with gradients on the Imac screen won't bother me as I'll be using it merely as a web browser.
Is this a good idea? Will there be any problems running a larger monitor of the Imac - any compatibility issues etc. Can anyone recommend a good screen around the £500 mark or under? I basically want a screen that isn't obviously brighter on one side than the other, as the Imac appears to be.

I know uneven lighting is a complaint among 24" iMac users - and I've seen two myself. But not all of them have the problem. You might want to consider trying another before giving up on them. Having said that - take a look at Samsung displays. I don't know what they run in the UK but I'm very impressed with the ones we have at work.

  • I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!

I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!  Further info:  I am a complete newbie to Mac.  Had three macs prior to 2000 then four PCs.  Just come back and struggling a bit with the unfamiliarity. On my old PC laptop I could simply switch from the laptop screen to the large external monitor (and back)  with the F4 function key.  While I can get the background image from my MBA to display, that's it.  Until I noticed on the far left of the external monitor, the very edge of one of the web pages I was on.  So Idragged it over to display in the centre.  But that's all that's there.  And now I have gone out of those web pages but they are still displaying on the monitor.  There is some wierd disconnect.  I'm sure it is just a setting thing.  Will keep searching for answer but any advice welcome!

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).

There is no limit to the number of times you can re-install Office on the same computer.
    You can activate by telephone:

  • U430 Touch with 2 external Monitors

Hi Folks, have recently purchased a u430 touch which I'm very happy with but want to run it with 2 external monitors. Any suggestions?
Both the monitors I have support HDMI and VGA. Will and HDMI splitter do the trick?
    Thanks in advance. M

    Hi Markhreilly,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are looking to connect 2 monitors to your Lenovo U430 laptop.
As per the specification of this model, it has only one HDMI out port as there is no VGA port. If the HDMI splitter has a VGA port then you can connect one to HDMI monitor and other to VGA monitor.
Click here for the specification of the model.
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!
    Best regards,

  • Re: Satellite P750 with 2 external monitors

    Hi,
I am just wondering if it is possible to have two "external" LCD monitors connected to my Toshiba Satellite P750?
One on the VGA and the other one on the HDMI perhaps?
    Cheers
    Niels

My system is factory standard Windows 7 64-bit with no modifications of any kind. The system automatically detects the monitors.
I can switch between displays using the Fn+F5 key or by using the right-click menu from the Windows dekstop (Graphics Options - Output to - Extended Desktop...) or by using the Intel graphics setup in 'Graphics Properties'.
The VGA attached display shows up as 'Monitor' and the HDMI attached display shows as 'Digital Display'.
So I can have any combination of two of the three displays: built-in display, VGA or HDMI. It would be nice if I could use all three at once but that seems to be a hardware limitation.
I can set any display as tthe primary Windows monitor. In my case I have the setup 'Graphics Options - Output to - Extended Desktop - Digital Display + Monitor' which makes the HDMI display the primary. Using the 'Extended Desktop' configuration means that I can drag windows from one monitor to another as if they were one large monitor, but I can configure them separately and play full-screen games on just one monitor while the second monitor is used to display other information.
I made sure of being able to use two external monitors before I bought this system. I discovered the benefits of dual external monitors many years ago and I would hate to go back to being restricted to just one.

  • Trying to connect my Macbook Pro with an external Monitor - Using VGA - DVI

    Hi Everyone..
Please dont classify me as dumb but every-time i need to connect my MBP to an external monitor or projector i cant
It just doesn't work... I plug it in using all the right connectors - DVI-VGA or the other way around... Anyway - i get a blue screen which tricks me... =]
After the blue screen i go straight to the page i was on before connecting the monitor...! =[
Anyway.. are there any settings i need to adjust.... =]
If there is anything that you guys know of please inform me because i am in need to use a Monitor frequently but so far i havn't been able to do it seen as though i don't know what to do.. Ive watched tutorials and have done exactly what they've told me but it still wont display anything on the external monitor. Ive used 2 MBP's - Both i've had issues with connecting them to an external display. i know its only a minor change i need to make in System preferences but i dont know which one it is...
Please - if you know please please please tell me what it is.! =]
    Thanks alot!
    Carl... =]

I assume that you mean the blue screen is on your monitor, not your MBP. If this is the case, go to system preferences and click on displays, when the pop up box appears, click on "detect displays". See if that helps.

How do I connect a camera to the Macbook Pro when using the computer in clamshell mode with an exrternal monitor?

    same as it ever was
do it like nothing is different.
be sure to have an external trackpad keyboard or mouse as you will loose them on the computer once it is closed.

  • Mac book pro, Turns off and goes under protection especially with an External monitor on.

    Mac book pro,
Turns off and goes under protection, sometimes without any specific motivation, but most of the time when an External monitor is pluged-in.
I use it when I work with final cut pro, and this problem it's becoming huge and changing my workplans....
It can turns off also 10 times in two hours.
In many forums I read that the CPU temp could be the problem, but I've checked it and It's always around 62°-68°....
In some others they say that the new RAM could be the problem too.
Is anybody able to help me? (Underneath you can check the Panic Report and my mac informations)

  • Macbook with lion; external monitor won't wake

I have a 2008 unibody aluminum 2.0 ghz MacBook with an Acer s232HL 23" external monitor. Lately I've noticed that the external monitor won't come back to me after I put the computer to sleep. I'm using Lion and a Dynex MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter. I never used to have this problem with Snow Leopard, but I got Lion right after it came out, and I could swear this problem didn't really start until a week or two ago.
I'm able to get the monitor back, but only after unplugging and replugging it in about 15 times.
    Here's what happens:
I wake the computer up from sleep. The laptop monitor comes on. The light on the monitor turns from amber to blue, and it cycles through its ports–DVI, HDMI, and VGA–looking for a signal, before saying "no signal", and going back to sleep.
I unplug the monitor from my laptop.
My laptop screen briefly turns blue as it is reinitializing.
The Acer light goes from amber to blue again, and cycles through its display. If I leave it unplugged, it says "no cable attatched," or something.
    I plug it back in.
    Laptop monitor briefly goes blue.
Acer light goes back to blue and it cycles through its ports again before saying "no signal."
I repeat this a multitude of times, until the computer and monitor seem to randomly agree to speak to eachother.
Has anyone else experienced this and found a more acceptable solution than mine?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Hi Sworden79, I'm having exactly the same problems with my Macbook Pro 2011...
I didn't notice the problem at the begining, I think it start to happend with one of the Lion updates...
Is really anoying... to make it worst, some times when I restart the computer if the monitor is plug in the computer freeze... I have to disconect the monitor from the computer, then force restart long pressing the power button, wait till Lion load and then connect the monitor back... (experiencing this issue that you are describing then...)
I notice that it reduce the amount of cicles it takes to recognize the monitor if you have display preferences open when you connect the monitor to the mac...
    This is SO annoying!

  • Problems with an external monitor

I have a laptop with intel 945 grafic card and I also use an external monitor (which has a nicer panel).
However I experience some strange problems with my setup:
I usually (when I am at home) start my laptop and close the laptop screen via
    xrandr --output LVDS --off
But, after a random period of time (I have not found any good reason for it) my external monitor goes in some sort of power save mode (the screen goes black and remains that way).
I usually activate the other screen (LVDS) and try to see if I can do anything.
    when I type:
    xrandr -q

No matter what I do I cannot live reactivate the external monitor.
(usually I try with the classic :
    xrandr --output VGA --auto
Inittially I thought it is a problem with the driver (i810) so I upgraded yesterday the whole system.
Even after I did that and used the new driver (intel) I still had much luck as I had an other blanking event today.
An other ideea is that this is caused by faulty bios, but it is just a guess
My present day solution: reboot (yes, full reboot, because restarting the xorg has not the intended effect)
Any ideas on what may cause this?
    Any help would be appreaciated.

display goes to sleep when colsed because there is a magnetic switch - small magnet opens the circuit.
if it stays on, either magnet was misplaced, some wire disconnected or the issue is with the switch circuit.
on some models switch is part of trackpad, if you have small magnet, try moving it over trackpad, see what it does.

  • Shadow artifacts when waking from sleep with an external monitor.

This problem happens when I have an external monitor connected, I put the MacBook to sleep, and then wake it up with the monitor still connected.
Upon waking, the shadow effects surrounding all of the windows get "corrupted"
The shadows look like TV static at the corners and black streaks along the sides. This effects all windows that were open and all new windows.
I imagine the bitmaps that are used for the shadows get corrupted on sleep for some reason.
I have some non-original ram installed right now, so I'll try reseating it and I'll try putting the original ram back in and let you guys know if it makes a difference.
Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Stop with an external monitor in Mavericks

I moved to MacBook PRO Retina 13" from a MacBook PRO late 2009.
Using an external monitor in Mavericks when unplugging power, the computer doesn't stop and the battery power slowly drains.
In the old MacOS X and with the old MacBook PRO once you disconnect the power the system was going to STOP mode.
    Fast and Easy!
What is the correct way to manage the stop process using an external monitor if you want to unplug the power?
Please don't tell me to leave the power plugged and STOP by clicking the apple>stop button.
    Thanks.

    same as it ever was
do it like nothing is different.
be sure to have an external trackpad keyboard or mouse as you will loose them on the computer once it is closed.
