T42P-Rebooting Windows after Loading/installing Recovery Discs

I just installed a new hard drive after crash, and loaded new purchased recovery disc set from Lenovo.  Any ideas how to get machine to boot to windows after installing? Keeps rebooting to Recovery menu with no options for windows.  Assume this recovery disc set brings laptop to 'as new shipped' condition.
thanks,
B

As the recovery discs are read, the recovery program copies a number of compressed files over to the hard drive.  It then boots back into the recovery program, "prepares" the hard drive (this process takes some time and the dialog box appears to hang with no evident hard drive activity) and then extracts the system and application files to their proper locations.  After this it boots into Windows to begin the configuration process (unless you press F11 at the prompt, which puts you back into the recovery program and allows you to do a custom recovery without going through the configuration process for the full recovery).  It will boot into Windows a number of times as it completes the configuration process.
I hope I remembered all that correctly.   Anyway, at which point is your machine rebooting?

  • Recovery and installing recovery disc/dvd

hi i bought the recovery dvds for my compaq presario cq60 laptop but my problem is i found out that the disc drive is not working so i cannot load the recovery disc even when i get them so my solution was to get an external disc drive but im trying to make sure i buy the right one cause i see ones that say dvd writer and disc drive so im trying to figure out if the recovery disc are dvds then what kind of external drive should i purchase?

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your computer, inside the battery compartment, or on the BIOS startup/setup screen. Please do not include your serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
The HP Recovery Disc set is typically 3 or more DVDs and possibily an optional CD or DVD. Almost any external USB 2.0 or 3.0 DVD drive will do the job. This DVD drive can be strictly a reader or it can also be a writer. If it was mine, I would go with something like an "External USB Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer" drive for flexibility.

    Hi 6sixs
You probably have some problem with your discs or Optical drive. The best you can do now is try to find out where the problem resides.
The simplest (I think) way to do this is to take the second CD (the one that always produces the error messages) and copy the complete contents to a temporary folder on another machine. Why this? If the CD is defective you will probably see that also on that machine. It will probably stop with an error message saying it can't read the contents of the disc.
In that case you have defective Recovery CD's and need new ones.
If the copy-process works out fine, then probably you have a defective CD-drive in your notebook.
    Good luck

  • Hard Drive Replacement - Installing Recovery Discs

Hard drive crashed. Bought a new seagate 500g and installed. Ordered recovery discs for win 7 from lenovo. Four discs received - 1) startup recovery 2) operating system 3) drivers and applications 4) additional recovery disc. I power up the pc with disc 1 in. Message at the bottom of the screen that files are loading along with the white progress bar. Looking good to this point. When the progress bar is full it just stops and does nothing else. Does not prompt me to do anything else. If I wait 3 or 4 minutes the starting windows message appears. It just hangs there. If I wait another 3 or 4 minutes the entire process starts all over. If left alone it would go through that cycle all day. I am never prompted to do anything else. I have tried inserting disc 2 at all points along the way when disc 1 stops. I have tried booting up with disc 2 in. I get a message of operating system not found (of course because disc 2 is the os and it hasn't installed yet). I cannot get beyond disc 1 loading files. Need some support before I do something crazy like go to the geek squad.

  • PREINST22.SWM error loading 4th Recovery Disc.

The original HDD that came with my Satellite C655D-S5202 died and I purchased a WD5000BPVT to replace it. I ordered the recovery discs and installed discs 1,2, and 3. The 4th disc comes up with the error code PREINST22.SWM. The options are try again, skip, and cancel. I've tried all three with no success. I've ordered a new set of recovery discs only to experience the same results. I've cleaned the disc. I'm out of ideas. Any ideas?

According to Newegg, that drive uses Advanced Format Technology.

  • System reboots continually after CS5 install

I have a CS5 workstation here that I took out of service a few months ago because it showed signs of OS corruption and possibly a virus. After messing with it for a while I did a bare-metal rebuild, beginning formatting both drives and resetting BIOS to system defaults. The system worked fine for 6-7 hours during Windows installation and configuration, driver DL and update, etc. After I installed CS5 Master Collection, it returned to its prior behavior.
ASUS M4A88T-M mobo, Athlon II CPU, 8GB RAM, 250GB boot drive, 1TB data drive, crappy ATi mobo graphics with NVidia GTX260 primary, Win7 Home Premium.
The system boots and gives a login screen, If I do nothing, about 2 minutes later it does a graceful shutdown and restarts. If I log into one of the two user accounts, it finishes loading the desktop before saying "Logging off" and then shutting down and restarting. This was the behavior that caused me to take it out of service (and resisted all attempts at fixing - I couldn't even deactivate CS5 before it would roll over). It will run in safe mode for a little longer (actually, it WOULD before - have not tried it since the rebuild) but selecting "do not restart automatically" at boot time has no effect.
It's possible that it's a hardware or firmware fault, but the oddity of the system running fine until CS5 was installed points to something changed at a boot/startup/initial configuration level, long before any CS5 app is started.
I have long since moved on to CS5.5 and CC, but I maintain this system for working on a few shared client projects; I kind of need it back up soon. If no one has any better thoughts I will try a new motherboard and (if needed) another rebuild. Very frustrating...
ANY ideas on what aspect of CS5 might be causing this, and how to get in and fix it without doing yet another rebuild and another license hit that will likely need a call to Adobe to fix? I think it must be some leftover fragment of Windows installer instructions, trying to finish an installation step and failing out. Or...?

Found it. It was an unbelievably evasive TDSS bootkit virus that survived a bare-metal format and OS install and showed itself only by chance. Windows Malware Tool beheaded it and TDSSkiller stomped it out. All updates installed, no further problem. The issue, besides what the virus was actively doing, was that it prevented a critical security update from being installed, which created a whole list of other update-related problems.
By far the nastiest malware I've ever had to deal with. But fixed.
Kudos to Kaspersky for making the TDDS remover available for free.

  • Windows 7 Home premium recovery disc

Hi guys. This is my first post. So i own a HP pavilion dv6 3010-us which runs Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit. I had a problem with my laptop and the only way I knew how to fix it was to perform a clean install of the OS. So I gave a guy my laptop to reinstalll my OS and he installed a different OS! My laptop now runs on Windows 7 Enterprise. I want my laptop back to its default factory OS. My laptop didnt come with a recovery disc, it only came with a recovery partition on the hard drive. But whenever i attempt to boot up my laptop in recovery mode, it tells me "BOOTMGR is missing" I don't even know how to fix this error. And my laptop isnt even booting up windows now cause I set the recovery partition, that is not working, as the active partition. Please how do I get my laptop back to its default OS? I dont have a recovery disc and I cant order it/them from HP. Is there a way that i can create a recovery disc that will help me fix my laptop? (If im able to restore my laptop to factory OS, I hope i'll still have all the HP features and software)

You won't be able to recover to the original operating system.
Once the guy installed W7 over the original one, you lost the use of the recovery partition. It is basically useless space now.
The only other thing you can do is to use the product key (if you can still read all 25 characters of the W7 product key) on the bottom of your notebook to install the operating system that came with your notebook.
Most dv7 consumer PC's come with W7 Home Premium 64 bit, so here is the direct link to the Microsoft digital river W7 x64 Home Premium SP1 ISO file.
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24209.iso Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English
Make sure you get the whole file to download.  Sometimes it reports download complete but you didn't get the whole 3.xx GB file.
Then either use your DVD burning program's burn ISO file option to burn the file to a DVD so that it is bootable.
Burn at the slowest speed you can.
Or, use this tool to transfer the file to a 4 GB USB flash drive or DVD.  This tool will also make the media bootable.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool
Then go to your PC's support page to get the available driver and software you need.
If your notebook is running OK with W7 Enterprise installed, then doing the above will not change anything other than to provide you with the operating system that came with your notebook without any of the additional software.

  • Integrated Webcam/Mic not detected after re-instal/recovery of windows 7

HP Pavilion dv7, Product number: A6X02UA#ABA
So... After recovering windows and installing the minimum recovery image (No extra junk or files)  I have a squeaky clean computer with the bare minimum on it.  Everything is working great, Until I installed Skype and found I have no integrated webcam, or mic anymore.   In the Device Manager, There is no imaging devices.  It also says ALL drivers installed are up to date.
I have read everyone’s answer that "if its not in the device manager, its a hardware problem i.e. the short cable that comes unplugged behind the screen"   But it is impossible... or at least 99.9% improbable.  As I used Skype successfully prior to the reinstall of windows 7, and did not move the computer, close/open the screen, unplug, or even sneeze on this thing since last using the camera and mic. The only thing that has changed was the windows recovery.  So far everything else works great. Even the Biometrics device. Why not the cam or mic?

    Hello Nostopin,
I'll posted the link as an example of how to find a hardware ID in general.
However if you cannot find the webcam in the device manager which sounds strange to me if it was working correctly before, then there is no way to install drivers for it because windows does not recognise the hardware.
Believe me that I would like to give you a working driver but I cannot give you one simply because I have no hardware ID.
As far as I know there are three options now.
    1 The hardware is broken
2 You didn't see the hardware ID (Which I doubt after your story.)
    3 this video http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02452221&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en#N70
In my opinon there are no other options with the information I currently have.

  • Installing Solaris Sun OS 10 - at first window after loading stops

I tried to install Solaris SUN OS 10 in VMWare and in a PC... When I load PC by CD-ROM boot mode it loads and then comes to a command line mode and waits for command!
It says press TAB for help and I pressed that. I got a list of commands... Such as kernel, boot, module and ...
I tried all but I got error...
I tried kernel /boot/multiboot, it failed...
WHAT SHOULD I DO? What command I should type?
    Thanks
    Regards

I'm getting the same thing with Solaris 10u8 in a VirtualBox. sol-10-u8-ga-x86-dvd.iso downloaded from cds.sun.com today.
(I tried the pre-made VirtualBox image Sun provides, and it's horribly dysfunctional. So I thought I'd try a fresh installation. More fool me, apparently.)
Edit: No, it's me. The problem is that the ISO I downloaded was incomplete - it cut off at precisely 2GB! The md5sum of what I downloaded is ea5a8606894d253e286861aaf4b5c50a; the official md5sum should be 9df7fd02d82976fd3ec38a18d1a57335. I guess tomorrow I try again with part A and part B ...
So it looks like the answer is: check with md5sum that you actually have the full ISO.

  • Cannot Boot To Windows After Rescue And Recovery

I used the Rescue And Recovery disks (7 disks plus actually recovery cd) on my T42. I received the cd set direct from IBM. I've used the CDs in the past with no issues. This time after following the instructions and completing the restore, I cannot get the computer to boot to windows. It keeps going back to the Rescue And Recovery program. What can I do?

    Refer to the following guide:
FAQ "How to use Recovery CD Disc Set".
"Also, if you get stuck after step 9 with Rescue and Recovery keeps on booting in a loop and not entering Windows then all you need to do is: GomJabbar wrote: While in Rescue and Recovery (with all CD's removed from your optical drive) you need to tell it to Restore Factory Contents. All the CD's really do is install Rescue and Recovery and the files needed to Restore Windows and the original Factory software."

  • Cannot restore Windows after using Rescue & Recovery

I used R&R once and after doing so, I reboot and come up with error message saying "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
       \WINDOWS\system32\c_1252,nls
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
Of course there is no original Setup CD-ROM with this computer.  I tried a Windows XP Professional CD from Microsoft and it cannot see any hard drive on my computer, so it will not work.
Is there a way to start over and re-install Windows??

    hey Bernie
missing drivers.. not th end of the world. dont give up on Lenovo yet. i installed xp yesterday and found the drivers the ibm-lenovo support site. fill in you laptop specs.. i.e. model, OS, etc. and you should get a list of your drivers..

  • Adobe installer files remain as windows after Reader installed, I've gone to Adobe Chat and they had me uninstall and reinstall Adobe AIR but the problem presists in Firefox only, not AOL or IE browsers.

After uninstalling/reinstalling AdobeAIR I now not only get the Adobe Reader install window but also get the AdobeAIR install window upon bootting up Firefox.

Attached are the two windows I get, Firefox hangs for a couple of minutes while these windows load, a real annoyance.
