T43 and firewire drives using PC card slot

I use a firewire card (PC card) on my laptop due to laptop has no
installed factory firewire. Problem is when I put computer to sleep or
close the lid of the laptop or boot or shut down windows the computer
will freeze and force me to push off button and have to reboot why is
that? The firewire is IEEE 1394.
Or if not willing to work what about this?
How can I share my 2 firewire device
1) external drive
2) CD/DVD burner
from my Mac to a XP computer?

Hi, Sherry. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You've posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Discussions area. You may want to try again in the proper _PowerBook Forum_.
I don't think any such thing exists, but someone there may know of something that would work for you.
Good luck.

  • HT204384 What are GT/s?- "Computers that use the PCIe bus express their speed as GT/s"? and what else is the card slot used for?

If I understand correctly the card slot on the Macbook Pro is for flash memory? Can it be used for anything else?

    Read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3553?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

GT/s is gigatransfer per second. It takes into account the overhead of the PCIe bus.

  • High Capacity storage using Express Card slot

    Hi guys,
I know this probably isn't the right forum but I couldn't find a more appropriate one.
I've got a MacBook Pro 2.16ghz Intel Core Duo and I need serious storage options!
I'm basically looking for high capacity RAID 5 storage to store/edit/capture onto. I edit mostly on SD but sometimes HDV (I own an HVR-Z1E). I've got a first edition MacBook Pro and so only have one firewire port which will be taken up when capturing by the camera.
I'm probably going to have to use the express card slot but haven't really thought about what card/wires yet. I'm wanting to spend under £1000 in total and would ideally like Raid 5 configuration to build some safety into my system (lost a project through a broken drive the other day). I'm hoping for a 2tb system or there abouts but am happy to go for less and keep plugging in more HDD later.
I was considering this la cie: http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10850 but I'm very open to suggestion and at the moment am most concerned about data rate especially on capture. On RAID 5 is that a problem with this drive if I connected with USB2.0?
Sorry for the odd placement (I'd be happy to re-post in a more appropriate forum if that's useful).
    All the best,

  • Airport and firewire drive

A few days ago the airport signal is grayed out when I am running from my firewire drive. I tryed a different firewire drive and it was the same. Next I tryed a different Powerbook with both drives and it too was the same, grayed out in the menubar. When running from the internal drive on both Powerbooks it works fine. I have also used several different firewire cables. Any ideas as to what is happening?

    Printah,
    Welcome to discussions.
So are you telling us that you have a version of OSX 10.4 installed on a couple of firewire drives ? And that you sometimes boot from these drives (holding down F at startup) ?
Does the version of OSX installed on the firewire drive include the AirPort software ?
And if it does, does it have it enabled in the Network system preference ?
And if it is, is it used ? ie. Do you still use Ethernet first, if it can establish a network connection ?
And if AirPort is used and preferred, does it have a preferred network to join ?
And if it does, have you retained the password in your Keychain (on that installation of OSX, not the one on your internal drive) ?

  • Nikon D7100 Import using both card slots Raw + JPEG

I have a Nikon D7100 with the card slots allocated  for Raw (Slot 1) and JPEG (slot 2). When Importing I would like to convert the raw images in slot 1 to the Adobe DNG format and to have the JPEG images simply imported as JPEGs. I cannot find the correct combinations of preferences/options to make this happen. What happens today is the both images import with the second labeled as a -2 copy of the first image. Suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks Ron K.

I found the magic combination of settings. Not only must the camera settings be set to raw (card 1) + Jpeg (card 2) but the quality needs to be set to raw + jpeg (fine, normal, or low).
This places the jpeg image on card #2 and is imported as a proper jpeg.
    Hope this helps others.

  • Satellite A200 - Do I need driver for SD card slot on Windows 7?

    Hello,
I'm french so sorry for my poor and wrong english.
I installed windows 7 32bit on my Toshiba Satellite A200 and my SD drive doesn't work.
    Must I donwload I driver?
    Regards,

I used the Vista driver on Win 7 preinstalled notebook and it did work.
I have no idea what A200 notebook model you have but in my case the driver was called:

This is a driver for your Bridge Media Slot. This slot lets you insert either a SD card, Memory Stick (Pro) or xD picture card.

  • How to use SIM card slot on W500

I found there is a slot for SIM card when I pull the battery out. I insert my SIM card and start the computer, however it won't recognize. I download and install Mobile Connect software, I got "no device found" message. How to use this function?

    Hello LeadOrg:
    Thanks for that reply.
What confuses me is this:  There seems to be two or maybe three different cards available, as follows:
Vodafone and AT&T - HSDPA wireless WAN, which seems to address the following two items:
      - Ericsson HSDPA Wireless WAN Adapter
      - Qualcomm UNDP Wireless WAN Adapter
Verizon Wireless WAN (UNDP), which seems to address the following one item:
       - Qualcomm HS-USB
I can't find any specifications in the Lenovo literature that clarifies which of the above items are suitable for GSM-900 and GSM-1800 (the frequencies used in Europe) and which of these items are suitable for GSM-850 and GSM-1900 (the frequencies used i Oz, USA, and Canada).
Further, Lenovo seems to be linking these two products to specific carriers (Vodafone and AT&T in one case, Verizon in the other case), and I use neither one of these companies - they don't operate in Canada.  I use Rogers GSM when I am in Canada and Swisscom GSM when I am in Europe.
I am quite confused.  I'd like to get a card that works with the two above carriers - but I don't know how to go about the process of selecting the appropriate card.  The whole HSDPA, HS-USB and UNDP business totally confuses me.  I always thought that UNDP was the United Nations Development Program...

  • Making Panther bootable firewire drive using a Tiger 10.4.4 iBook

I want to use original Panther installation disks to make a Panther OS on an external OWC firewire 30GB Travelstar harddrive.
My Tiger iBook doesn't seem to be able to start up with the Panther disks, and I can't figure out how to get Panther onto that drive. Final goal is to put that drive with Panther on it into a G3 iBook whose 30GB internal drive died.
    Suggestions appreciated.
    G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hello,
Apple has their computers set up to prevent booting or installing a version of the Mac OS that is earlier than the version that the computer shipped with. This ensures that the version of the Mac OS you install is aware of the specific needs of your computer (how it's power management system and cooling system works, etc.).
This method prevents you from installing a version of the Mac OS that is even 1 revision older. So, if your computer came with 10.4.5, then you will not be able to use that computer to install 10.4.4.
So, you will have to use a computer that originally shipped with OS 10.3 or earlier to install Panther on that drive.
You need a machine which shipped with the exact same version of OS 10.3.x that you are trying to install or earlier.
Additionally, there are times when a version number is slightly different for each system. For example, say 10.3.5 was already out when your system was first introduced. But, then lets say that your system required some tweaking in the OS to support new design elements in your system. In this case, the version of 10.3.5 that came with your system would be a slightly newer build than the official 10.3.5 version. So, in that situation, you wouldn't be able to install from a retail set of 10.3.5 disks because that version is technically older than the version that came pre-installed on your computer (even though they are the same revision number).
You see, while us consumers use the revision numbers as distinguishers, Apple uses "Build" numbers.
The "Build" number reflects the exact version of the OS (with all changes accounted for - even software updates adjust the build number).
So, you need to be sure that the "Build" number that came with the system is older than the build number of the OS you are trying to install.
So, if your Panther disks are 10.3.5, then to be certain it will work, you will need a computer that shipped with 10.3.4 or earlier. A computer which shipped with 10.3.6 will not install from a set of 10.3.5 disks (even if they are being installed to an external drive). And, as explained above, a system which shipped with the same OS version number may not install it either.
So, you specifically need to look at the disks you have, and see which version of OS 10.3.x they are (somewhere between 10.3 or 10.3.0 and 10.3.9).
You then need to find a computer that originally shipped from the factory with that version of 10.3.x or older to install the software onto your external drive. And, preferably, it should be a system that shipped with at least one revision number prior to your disks.
Now, another issue, is that you specifically will need the OS 10.3 Retail box version to do this anyway. You will not be successful using the 10.3.x disks that came with a computer. You need the retail box version.
The disks that came with a computer are "keyed" to that computer. So, they can only be installed using that specific computer.
In the end, I think your best solution is to just install the hard drive into the iBook G3 that you intend to use it with, and use that computer to install OS 10.3.x from a set of retail box disks.
    I hope this helps.

  • Sound and vibration toolkit using Keithley Card

    Hello everyone,
Might be doing a project soon using the LABVIEW Sound and Vibration Toolkit(1/n octave vibration analysis required) with LABVIEW 6.1(Sorry, try convince my Boss to upgrade). We have a Keithley KPCI-3101 card avaliable to us for the analog input.
Do any of you forsee a problem using a non-NI card with the sound and vibration toolkit? I can find very little on the internet discussing using non-NI cards with the toolkit.
This might sound like a stupid question but I need to be
100% sure that there are no problems.
Thank you for any help you can offer :-)
    Cheers
    Jurgen

    Hello Jurgen,
Of course the integration with National Instruments boards (PCI-4472 or 445x boards) is best suited with the Sound and Vibration Toolkit. However it is possible to use the toolkit without National Instruments hardware. Most of the examples that ship with the toolkit use NI-DAQ data acquisition calls. You need to remove them from the examples and substitute them for the driver vi's that your board uses. There are also a couple of examples that use simulated signals (so there is no hardware at all involved).
One thing to be aware of is the sample rate. Recommended sample rates, that are used in most examples are 51.2 kS/s. You may need to check if your board is capable of doing this.
Also all the functions use the waveform datatype, (which include
s timing information), so you need to convert your array of data to this datatype, using the build waveform function.
    Hope this answers your question.
    Best regards,
    Erik vH.

  • Time Machine Failure and Firewire Drive Disappears

I have been using Time Machine without any problems with a 1TB external drive connected via USB.  I recently changed to a firewire cable to speed things up, and it works great.  UNTIL... I sporatically get errors where the time machine icon is just spinning and spinning.  When I click on the mounted external backup drive, I get no response.  I cannot eject or get any response from it, or find it in Finder.  If I maunally kill the power on the external, I get an error for disconnecting without ejecting.  When I start it back up, all is fine.  I notice the error when waking up the mac, sometimes after other users have been on with their own accounts.
My guess is that sleep or switching other users somehow interferes with the firewire connected external drive from communicating with the mac?

Some "Eco" or "green" drives are known for this behavior. The following steps may help:
Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive is connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port on the computer.
If a firmware update is available for the drive, apply it.
Contact the drive manufacturer to see whether there's a firmware setting you can change.
If you installed vendor software for the drive, uninstall it.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, try another drive.

  • New aluminum iMac and firewire drive

My school recently placed an order for a lab of iMacs and found out yesterday that we will be getting the new model (20 inch).
We had been using old G4 towers with Final Cut Express and external firewire 400 drives.
Since the new iMac will only have a single firewire 400 port can anyone suggest our best options for capture/playback via firewire 400 and also using our existing firewire 400/USB 2.0 external drives? Is there a firewire 800 to 400 adapter that will allow us to use the faster port as a second 400 port?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I think the adapter for converting FW800 to FW400 is the best option in your case. In my case, my iBook only has one FW400 port and I opted for a Belkin FW Hub to allow capture from my camera to my FW400 external HD. I've heard this is not ideal, but it works for me. Would love to get a new iMac one day.
I believe the reason FW hubs are not recommended is because you can end up splitting the bandwidth. Essentially you might end up with FW200 if two FW400 devices are hooked up to the hub. Anybody else know?

  • How to sync ipod when hard drive and external drive used for music?

The Ipod can hold all of my music. My laptop has some current music, the external drive has old music albums. How do I set up the music library / itunes library to sync with the ipod and not erase the music from the external drive when it is not connected.
I am used to adding mp3s to player, and they stay there until deleted. Now I sync the Ipod, and if I don't keep the external drive attached, the Ipod loses the old music.
I have searched all discussion lines and do not quite understand the how to of multiple libraries versus other options.
    Thanks.

Easiest way is to make sure your exHD is plugged in before opening iTunes and syncing your iPod.

  • VBR and Hard Drive use

    Hi,
What is the benefit of using the VBR setting vs. the 128 kbps download rate for cds?
And does the VBR take up more space on my hard drive?
    Thanks

Strange that, I always thought that the bitrate set for VBR was the max bitrate, not the minimum. I know you're right, but it's just a little wierd. Logically I thought if you set the VBR bitrate to say 160kbps, that would be max it would go. So quieter less complex parts would return lower bitrates, (some I've seen got down to about 8kbps on some encodes I've done.)
On a CD ripper I use, I use the max VBR setting and it will always go below 320kbps, not many cd's I've done have ever encoded at max. I would imagine encoding at lower VBR bitrates using the same software will warrant the bitrate to be equal or lower than what it's set at.
VBR should yield slightly smaller files than CBR at the same bitrate.
Maybe I'm wrong, I'll check tomorrow.
