T43 Hard drive missing in bios

Hi Everyone,
I got an "Operating system not found" error after restarting my thinkpad T43 laptop.
I checked the bios startup and hard drive was missing. so removed my hard drive and connected to desktop and was able to get all the files. Looks like my hard disk is fine.
I tried resetting the CMOS battery as well - didn't solve the problem.
Is there anything wrong with the motherboard?
What else do I need to check before making sure that motherboard is faulty?

Three things I can think of:
a) HD disabled in BIOS (easy to check)
b) HD not sitting right in the caddy and/or slot
c) Defective/dirty/??? connector on the board

Laptop dropped - trying to run hard drive test in bios, but can't find

CAn someone tell me how to run a hard drive test in bios - I am not seeing it in the menu at the initial screen after hitting F2. Is there a disk I need to insert?

The BIOS doesn't provide a HD diagnostic. The BIOS is firmware and is limited to providing
basic functions like recognizing devices on the buss or providing the user the ability to

New hard drive shows in Bios and device manager but not in windows explorer in windows 7

I have added a new sata 500gig hard drive and it is recognised in the bios, but is not recognised by windows explorer, though the disk is showing in device manager as a hard drive . I have followed the example on the forum by going to computer management and rescanning disks, to no avail.
Any ideas how I can get to use the drive?

Thanks Dale (and everyone else). A cure! Sorry I did not reply earlier, but have been trying all known fixes to no avail... However. The second of your links in the last reply of yours (starting, New Drive or mapped network drive) worked with a slight variation in windows7, as follows is how I achieved joy.
Right-click My Computer , and then click Manage .
Under Computer Management (Local) , click Disk Management .
This far is as above, then I'll add comments to the existing help to show my variant.
In the list of drives in the right pane, right-click the new drive and then click Change Drive Letter and Path(s) .
Here it still did not show the drive in the right window, but below it there is a second window listing disks and one of them unallocated and without a drive letter was my new drive. IMPORTANT! This set of info may not be apparent unless you enlarge the box by dragging it, as the default only shows the top box (so I have missed it until now on all my searching). Right clicking on this gave a set of obvious choices to create a choice of drive letter, format and options (NTFS etc) and this created the drive for me. I am sorry I am vague on the box choices, but on right selecting a live drive it doesn't bring up the "unallocated" box choices again. Click Change , and in the drop-down box, select a drive letter for the new drive that is not assigned to a mapped network drive.
Click OK , and then click OK again.

T43 Hard drive issues... **banging head against wall**

I'm hoping someone else has encountered this issue. My T41 had died and so I bought a T43. I moved my hard drive over (with caddy and all), but it wasn't able to boot.
Went into the boot menu, the hard drive didn't appear. Changed the boot options to boot from the hard drives first but still nothing. Pulled out the drive and put another one in - a "non-authorized" Thinkpad drive, but the same - nothing. In fact, I didn't even get the 2010 error code.
Then I realized both drives were cool to the touch - they weren't even spinning up. I put both those drives in external enclosures and they fired up without issue.
So someone tell me, is there something I'm missing or is there a problem with the main board?

Let's check the basics first:
- Is the hard drive inserted face down, secured in the caddy with all four screws?
- Is your new T43 a 14" or a 15" unit? If it's a 15", you need a different hard drive cover.

T43 Hard drive not recognized unless replugged

It's a T43 with a 100GB FUJITSU MHV2100AH hard drive. Last night the blue screen came on. Upon rebooting, it displays "Operating System not found", and the hard drive is no longer recognized. The problem persisted, until I unplugged and re-plugged the hard drive. Then the system booted normal. Today, the problem came up twice, again, and unplugging still does the trick. Hard drive has passed Ontrack EasyRecovery Full Diagnosis with minor problems (a few bad sectors), but it's not likely that the bad sectors are causing the problem, is it? Anybody has an idea what is wrong here? Thanks!

Unfortunately, I can't find where he posted that, see I also own a T42p with ATI graphics, it's been running great ever since I bought it from him (knock on wood), he commented about this symptom somewhere and I took it as a way to tell when mine would be facing the same fate (I hope that moment never comes ).
Since motherboard replacement is an expensive assumption, therefore I would first suggest you to run a complete diagnostic test through lenovo PC Doctor's bootable CD for DOS:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-56222
If your ThinkPad passes all tests with flying colors, then try borrowing or buying a new HDD (2.5'' ATA/IDE notebook drive), if the new HDD does the same then probably your motherboard is failing.

Time Capsule as a hard drive missing data

I've had a time capsule for a few years now, and have been using it both through Time Machine to back up my computer, and as an external hard drive to store photos and videos. The hard drive on my computer had been reaching capacity, so I sought to move my pictures onto the time capsule (as you would on a hard drive) and then proceed to delete the files from the hard drive on my laptop. I was doing this again last night and went to double check some photos I had stored a few months ago, only to find that I can no longer access them! The strange thing is, the file names of my lost photos are still visible, but I am unable to access them.
Can anyone help solve this? I don't want to continue to move photos onto my time capsule if it will continue to be unreliable for storing data. I may just resort to purchasing a separate hard drive for my file storage, and simply using my time capsule for time machine.
I am using a 2008 macbook and running snow leopard (OSX 10.6.8). I purchased my 1TB time capsule in 2010.

Conceptually I think there’s a tendency to view the Time Capsule as a kind of fail-safe storehouse for computer data, almost as if it were a traditional time capsule preserving physical objects for future generations, decades or even centuries later. In reality Apple’s Time Capsule relies on a hard disk drive that is pretty much the same as, and likely no better at preserving data than, the disk in your MacBook. Thus if you copy files to the TC and delete them from your MacBook, you're simply moving stuff around. You still only have a single copy of the files, and they’re still stored on a prone-to-failure hard disk drive. And in the process the basic backup function of the Time Capsule has been utterly defeated.
That has never stopped me from doing exactly what you’re doing, but I tend not to store anything on the TC except useless crap that I won’t miss too much when the TC disk fails, corruption or a read/write error occurs when connected to the TC, or the whole thing just burns up due to overheating. I gather you value your images and videos more highly than this, and consequently I think your idea about purchasing an external hard drive is probably sensible. If connected directly to your MacBook, it should provide more reliability and speed, and you can then also use Time Machine to back it up to your TC as well.
Unfortunately, I think the inaccessible zero KB files shown in your “2009” folder are gone, if they were ever really there. I wonder if when you copied them to the TC back on April 2 there was some kind of connection failure or write error that you didn’t notice, which aborted the process, leaving only these empty ghost entries behind in the disk’s index. In any event, it looks like there’s nothing there now.
You also seem to be running very low on disk space and might want to think about a new 2 or 3TB TC.

Second hard drive missing thread error

Hello, I've got a macbook pro with 10.8.5 running. I have had a second 1Gb hard drive installed in the optical bay and it's been running for a long time with no issue. I booted up today and noticed the drive would not show up in finder. I ran disk utilities and it said there was a sibling link error and it suggested I repair the disk using disk utility. I ran disk repair and a new error popped up during catalog file check: there are 5 missing thread record (id = xxxx) errors and two "Incorrect number of thread record errors". Then it says the volume could not be verified completely and ultimately ends with Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed-up files. I noticed the volume name changed to disk1s2 and I can't mount it. Now I'm stuck. I looked at recommendations for more elaborate disk repair programs that can be purchased but I see so many negative recommendations on all of them I'm not compelled to purchase. I definitely need to recover the data on the drive so I am pretty disappointed at what disk utility seemed to do to the drive (it appears to me to be worse since the volume name is changed (before I ran disk utilities when I had the sibling error I saw that the volume name was correct) and I can't do anything with it.) I'm stuck and could use some good advice. This is not a boot drive just a data drive.
Also if anyone could say what this sibling error was and what the thread errors actually are that would be a bonus (I'm an old timer hardware engineer and just want to know )

Normally, those errors are WRT the disk's directory. You need something stronger, such as DiskWarrior, TechTools Pro, or Drive Genius. All of are reliable and should do the job. Disk Utility has many shortcomings and repairing disk directory errors is one of its biggest.

Motherboard crashed, hard drive missing LR and 100 gigs of photo files

able to save drive, put in ext ensclosure and hooked it up tp laptop. am able to open My Pictures folder, only 10 gigs worth of pics visible.
should be 126 gigs. most programs still on drive and accessible: i tunes, all canon photo software, etc. the LR catalog is nowhere to be found.
when this drive was in the desktop there was 25 gigs free space left. viewing the drive hooked up to laptop it also shows 25 gigs free.
wondering if this info is false. if not, where are my missing files and LR ???
i do have my stuff backed up but not sure if all of it backed up, specifically some photo files.
have tried booting from the drive instead of from laptop drive, windows would not allow. desktop was xps, laptop is vista. during that boot i actually saw the xps logo come up a couple of times but then it went to vista.
any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have two problems. 1) Unable to load LR onto the second system (laptop) and 2) the hard drive with original system files has a corrupted file system due to motherboard failure and system crash.
Problem 1: LR license activation allows loading onto two (2) systems. Did you load LR on two systems prior to the crash, which is now preventing you from activating the copy on your laptop? You may need to call Adobe Tech Support to "free-up" the license on your crashed system.
Problem 2: You will need to some data recovery work, due to a corrupted file system on the original HDD. There are numerous data recovery software applications available as freeware or for purchase:

I only have experience with Acronis True Image Home 2010, and definitely would NOT recommend their products due to bugs and poor tech support. Perhaps someone else on the LR forums can suggest a specific data recovery application?

T43 Hard-Drive Recovery

Hey all.
So my laptop was knocked off a table by a clumsy friend and now displays a "disk read error" when I attempt to boot it up. It's been giving me problems for a few years now, so I'm ready to cut my losses. My tech savviness is minimal, but I'm hoping that I can salvage what was on my hard drive. I know the amount of pins varies, so I was wondering if anyone knows if this adaptor ( http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=906&sku=17705&relatedItem=true ) would work to run the hard drive for my T43 through a desktop.

Airport Utility Missing, Hard Drive Missing

I can longer find my hard drive on the new Airport Extreme AC. It worked when I first installed the
Airport Extreme AC, but now it is missing. I tried to use Airport Utility to fix it, but that program
is also missing.
I can't download 6.3.1 Airport Extreme because it won't work with Yosemite, and there is no
way for me to download another copy of Airport Extreme 6.3.2. I'm caught in a catch-22...
Any ideas?

Do you have another device in the network .. another computer.. any iOS devices.. you can use airport utility on any of those.
If yosemite has failed.. boot to recovery on the computer and reinstall your previous OS. You will find it works heck of a lot better than Yosemite for now.

Hard Drive Missing Space

Okay-so I just noticed that my hard drive has just 33.85 GB of space available for use.
The drive's capacity (after formatting etc) is 111.35GB
So, finder is telling me that 77.51 GB of hard drive is IN USE-okay, fine & dandy.
Problem is that using OmniDiscSweeper and Disc Inventory both show a max of 48GB IN USE which should leave 63GB available FOR USE, not 33. Both programs include/account for HIDDEN files.
So where is this mysterious 30ish GB of hard drive being used?
Trash has been emptied and even when I manually add up files in finder, I don't find the space either.
Permissions have been verified, the disk itself has been check for errors-nothing.
Sleepimage takes up just one gig so it's not there and it's not in the swapfile either.
There are no extra partitions (which is clear anyway since it shows 111 capacity).
I've searched for an answer all over the web but all I'm seeing is that people suggest looking at the hidden files (which are already accounted for by DiscSweeper) OR that it has to do with the byte conversion (1,000 vs 1,024) but that would only account for a percentage nowhere near 50%.
That's quite a bit of hard drive to be missing. Suggestions? I'd like to have that 30ish gb back.

I've used WhatSize to look at hidden files and total files. Maybe try it to see if it pulls anything different. You need to use a version before 4.0 as the vendor crippled the program in demo mode. This one is 3.9: http://www.free-mac-software.com/whatsize/

Time Machine Hard Drive Missing

Specs: 1-year-old iMac (2.8 GHz i7 etc) running OS X 10.6.7.
Until a last week (and possibly this issue is related to my recent 10.6.7 update), my Firewire-800-connected external Lacie backup drive (2 Tb RAID) showed on the desktop faithfully. This is my Time Machine backup however I use it manually to safekeep various other files. Now it no longer shows up on the desktop and yet Time Machine still works fine, a clear indication that everything is connected + powered properly and there is data integrity.
Yes, of course I have checked the Finder Preferences to ensure External Drives are supposed to show up. It does not show up, nor does it appear in the left column of Finder windows.
I have also looked at the drive using Disk Utility where it appears in the left column as always. I am able to Unmount, Mount, and Eject the drive but that is all. Time Machine now provides the only access to data on the drive, but this does not represent everything on it.
appreciate any suggestions of things to try or ideas what may be amiss.

just got back to taking a look at this...
appreciate the suggested terminal commands but no luck. I get this with both command line versions:
(hard drive name):~ (my user name)$ chflags nohidden /Volumes/HQ 2big Quadra RAID
chflags: /Volumes/HQ: No such file or directory
chflags: 2big: No such file or directory
chflags: Quadra: No such file or directory
chflags: RAID: No such file or directory
(hard drive name):~ (my user name)$
and yet I know the named path is accurate as commandshiftG does bring up a finder window for the drive. plus that's the path Disk Utility shows.
also, as I mentioned, it isn't showing on the desktop of the other User account (and I would prefer not to create another account and delete it later unless this is sure to prove something)

Hard drive missing

Hello there! Before making this post I searched for similar topics to see whether any of those suggestions could work for my case, but alas none have so it's time to post yet ANOTHER "can't find hard drive" post. Apologies if you're bored of these.
About a week ago my computer froze while running Safari. I took it as a normal freeze up and tried to Force Quit by going through the menu. Nothing happened so I shut it down using the Power button. I'd done it before and so didn't think much of it. Then a day or two later I turned it back on and got the lovely grey screen with the flashing question mark and two faces. I tried fixing the error w/ the installation disks, but when I click on the Disk Utility it doesn't read that there's a hard drive to format/repair. The installation CD is the only thing that it reads. I've also tried to just re-install the entire operating system even though I don't want to lose anything (I'm willing to do it though if that's the only way), but when asked to select the destination where to install the system, there's no hard drive to show. Nothing shows up. :o( I'm not that computer savvy so any help would be greatly appreciated!
It's my iMac G5 20" that is giving me issues. Bought it in late 2004, so it's one of the early models if that helps determine an effective way to fix!

Thanks. Went and bought a new hard drive instead. It was hurting my head trying to figure things out and saw no point in buying software that may/may not help. The hard drive seemed pretty dead. :o(
Put the new hard drive in. The system install disc reads it (yaay!) but now I get the "You cannot install MAC OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume." sigh How do I fix THAT problem?
Keep in mind again, I am not that computer savvy. Could it be my version of Mac OS X that I'm trying to install? Is it too "old" for the new hard drive? Was considering upgrading to Leopard if this doesn't work out... if that's at all possible.

Using Time Machine to restore to new hard drive missing recent backups

On Mac Book Pro 2009 with OS X 10.5.8.
I have been backing up to Time Machine on an external drive since 2009. A few month ago I upgrade to OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Trying to install a new hard drive and restoring from Time Machine. Just before installing the hard drive I again backed up to Time Machine.

"Select a backup. Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. Only complete backups of Mac OS X appear in the list"
The problem is, the most recent "complete" restore point in the list is August 2011 (OS X 10.5.8). How can that be? Over the years I have checked Time Machine and I have back ups way past 2011.
What should I do?

The question makes sense until you realize that Time Machine backups contain everything you need (unless you do something silly, like exclude your system files).
Once the new drive is installed and formatted, you can restore your entire system from the TM backups faster than you can copy the clone to the new internal HD. See #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. Note that you use the Snow Leopard Install disc only for the Installer on it; you don't install OSX from it.

X2100 M2 hard drives missing power adapter part?

We just ordered a X2100 M2 with 2 250GB SATA hard drives. The system and hard drives came from two different vendors because of our procurement system. The hard drives are Sun branded, and they have the neat little pull lever on the front. They slide into the X2100 fine and lock into place. However, they are using the old style power connector, which does not match up to the X2100's new style power connecter. Is there supposed to be some sort of adapter that plugs into the drive's power pins? What is up with this?

What prong part? You mean the prongs to plug it into the wall AC socket? What can't you use the old one from the old adaptor?
