T43 motherboard damage cant access hard drive

Hello, I wonder if anyone to there could advise me.
I have a T43 with finger print reader, I was shoved on the train and dropped my bag
which resulted in it hitting the floor and the plug punched through the back into the
motherboard. The laptop was in standby at the time.
I have brought a USB 2.5 hard drive connector to try and recover my data but cannot
access it.
Is the hard drive encrypted if the finger print reader is used.
Can the hard drive be crashed so badly by the mother board being damaged that
you cant access it anyway?
Many Thanks
Dave

davidadams, welcome to the forum,
ouch! sorry to hear about your bad luck.
The fingerprint doesn't encrypt the hard drive, Client Security does if you configured it to do so.
If you had the finger print configured with a hard drive password set in bios you will not be able to access the hard drive in an usb enclosure. As long as you know the password it is possible to remove the password in another ThinkPad, preferably another T43.
As your T43 was in standby, it is possible that the drop also damaged the hard drive. This would have been less likely if it had been in hibernation mode or turned off as the heads would have been properly parked.
There are ways to recover files from a damaged hard drive, some less costly than others; it depends on how badly it is damaged, if it is damaged.

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

  • I can't access hard drive

    I buy Airport time capsule.
I can access WiFi but can't access hard drive ?

Are you actually running Lion on your computer??
Make sure the preference in Finder allow it to show network drives.
    This might be turned off.
Have you setup Time Machine.. Time Machine can usually find the TC. If it fails then you need to redo the setup of the TC.
Use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Manually mount the TC hard disk from finder.. go .. connect to server.
    Type in the name.
AFP://TCname (in mavericks you will need to add the domain.. so TCname.local) TCname is of course replaced with your actual TCname.

Also, what are new MBs doing so that one doesnt have to deal with this annoying F-6 step?  For some reason I think I heard new MBs dont require this F-6 step.
for his mobo, the drivers are absolutely necessary to be loaded when SATA HDD are used. that is due onboard sata controller.

  • Cant unmount hard drive

I have a Maxtor 500 GB quickview HD in an ext hd casing with esata, firewire 400, and USB connections. Was copying my Mac Book Pro hard drive to the external hard drive with carbon copy cloner and it froze on transferring the library. On restart the ext hd still loads on the desktop, but inconsistently. I tried to erase the ext hd in disc utility, and repartition as guid format (the hard drive was extended journaled and i think apple partition map. It is telling me it cant unmount the hard drive to erase. What am I doing wrong? How can I unmount to reformat? Any suggestions most welcome.

I bought 3 external Hard Drive set ups with the maxtor internal hard drives. Two of the 3 work perfectly on all 4 of the mac computers I have access to. The defective one acts the same on all 4 computers, so it is not the computers, and seems to be something with the defective external hard drive. I have even started the computer from my install discs, gone into disc utility and tried to first aid, erase, and partition with the message always "Can't Unmount the hard drive". I would assume that it is not the cables since the ext hard drive shows up on the desktop of all 3 computers, and changing cables doesnt make a difference when using 3 different firewire cables. Any other ideas on what I might try to get the hard drive to unmount? Is the only other option to see if I can return the hard drive? I really appreciate the comments so far, it is quite helpful to know that it is not just me pushing the wrong button somewhere that unmounts so disc utility can do it's job.
    Thanks again

i accidently posted in the amd forum first , but was given the advice to try it in another system and save to cd's so ill try that. any other advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you

First, you need to verify that D: point to your slave drive. You can do that in WinXP Disk Management. Do you have any valuable information you need in the slave drive? If no, just go ahead and format it. Did you also mention the slave drive had a OS for previous system? If yes, change the boot sequence settings in the BIOS and let it boot to your slave drive. Perhaps from there you can save some data. If not, well, just go ahead and format it.

  • Problem accessing hard drive for more than one user at the same time

    Hello all,
I recently bought a 2nd generation AirPort Extreeme 802.11n to replace a cheapo wireless router. The main reason I wanted to get the AirPort was so I could attach a USB hard drive which holds iTunes music files Originaly I had a G4 MDD and this was a second internal hard drive. Since my wife and son also share my Mac, we stored the iTunes music folder there, so we could all access the files. That worked fine.
Then I got a early 2009 iMac and gave my wife the G4. My son also has a G3 iBook, using the wireless internet conection. At first I had the drive in an external case attached via Firewire. Both my iMac and my wife's G4 are attached to the network using ethernet, not wireless. She was able to access the music files so long as my Mac was on, but the connection was flaky.
So as mentioned, I picked up a used AirPort Extreme from OWC, mainly to attach the hard drive, since it's no longer in my Mac. It took some fiddling, and I was honestly surpsied that the APE was trickier to set up than expected, but now I have the external drive mounting, and we can all access the files from any of the Macs in the house. It works great except for one thing. If I'm logged into my iMac, and then another family member logs in on the same iMac, we don't all have access to the hard drive. It's still mounted, but the you have no permission to view the files on it.
Then if I remount it, I can access the files, but now the other user can't.
So in a nutshell, only one user can access the drive at the same time from the iMac, but we can all access it from different Macs.
Anyone have an idea of why this is happening and how to remidy it?

This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Remotely Access Hard Drive Connected to ABS

Hello all, I apologize in advance if this question is in another thread, I haven't been able to find it.
Can someone walk me through the steps to remotely access my external hard drive that is connected to my Airport Base Station (802.11n) from the internet? I open the "connect server" window from a different wifi source and put in my IP address but it never works. I think I have the right IP address, not sure, it's the one I found in my modem settings. My set up entails a DSL modem connected to my ABS and the hard drive connected to that. I have "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" checked too.
Is there a guide somewhere? Again, thanks in advance!
    Tim

I went to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ from my home and it said that it couldn't see port 548 (connection timed out) so I guess it was blocked. I can't turn my firewall off on my modem, very lame, (it's an Actiontec and I have Qwest DSL) so I put it on low, checked again and this time it says it was refused. My IP address changed too which I guess happens every time I reset it.
I will try and contact my provider and see if they are blocking that port.
Should I have Apple Talk turned on? or is that for something different?
    Thanks Again
    Tim

  • Finder crashes when accessing hard drive

Everything was working fine until I installed Font Doctor and started using it to examine my fonts. It would crashed when I hit this one folder. I tried it again and identified the exact font folder that was causing the problem (or so I thought). I restarted the computer and decided to get rid of that font folder, but all my fonts are on my main hard drive, and everytime I click on the hard drive the finder crashes and comes up with a default window, so I can't access it. I can access files/programs through applications or user, and I can access specific files on the main hard drive through the programs but can't get into the hard drive directory.
I did a search on this site and found this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=964617&tstart=90
I thought it was the answer, especially since I had an old version of Stuffit on my system so I deleted Stuffit using the link enclosed. But when I did a search afterwards (after emptying the trash and restarting) it still showed stuffit things on my hard drive, not in the user or library folders which I can access, but on my main hard drive which I can't access.
I looked at the code and it showed some of the same things that the previous poster mentioned.
Here is some of the latest code after I restarted yet again:

    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much!

    Hi Barry,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I did buy diskwarrior on my way home, ran it a few times. No success. It did identify problems it couldn't fix with a lot of the files that were in my suspect folder (a font folder) but since I can't access the files directly on my hard drive I can't get rid of them.
I did follow your suggestion, but all that it did that I can see was scatter my folders on the desktop.
Yet, while typing this, I just found a creative way to solve the problem!!! I was able to access the font folder in Bridge even though I couldn't access it otherwise. I deleted it in bridge and now things are working as normal!!! Thank God for Bridge. Amazing. Especially since that font folder has been on this machine for months, and the previous machine for years without ever causing a problem...

  • How to access hard drive on mac pro desktop from laptop?

I sold my Mac monitor and wireless keyboard. Now I want to sell my Mac Pro Desktop, but I need to wipe the hard drive first. How can I turn it on and access the drive from my Mac laptop?

It will show up as a drive, you can just access the drives on the desktop provided you turned on disk sharing. You can't access the "desktop".. If you had previously turned on screen sharing then you could use that via network connection.
If you can find the file that has preferences and then edit it then you can change to startup in Target disk mode. I do not know the file or how to edit it.
    GSC818 wrote:
If I can start it from the button, then can't I connect to my laptop via firewire or Ethernet and would it show up as an external drive? Then I could change the startup disk in the preferences panel on my laptop. Would that work?

  • Mac won't access hard drive. Media is there.

All my media is located on an external hard drive. The location is G:/iTunes/iTunes music when accessed from my Dell PC. I now want to give my Mac Book (older one) access to my music and ditch the PC. When I connect the hard drive it comes up on the Mac labeled as "MyBook", which is what I named it. I open iTunes, hold down the option key till it says "Choose itunes library." So far, so good. I click Choose Library. However, when I navigate to the external drive under Devices, and locate the iTunes folder  I get an error message stating "The iTunes Libray.itl file is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have write permission for this file."
Just for for the heck of it, I literally dragged all my music and movies to iTunes manually from the hard drive and dropped them into iTunes. They all reinstalled into iTunes and played fine but were placed onto the Mac's hard drive. Now my Mac's drive is basically entirely full. Also, none of the movies or media will let me make any changes to titles, sorting, etc. It's like the files are locked. Also, none of my PDFs, apps, or other stuff transferred.
I also tried doing the same thing from Preferences in iTunes. Went to preferences, Advanced and the "iTunes Media folder location" box says: /users/user/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media. I clicked "Change" and again navigated to My Book, iTunes.
Now in the location window it says: /Volumes/My Book/iTunes
I hit OK. It says updating iTunes library.
Then it comes up with "Would you like iTunes to move and rename the files....."
I've ve tried hitting both yes and no.
Nothing happens after this point. iTunes just stays blank with no media in it.
How do I get my Mac to access my media on the hard drive without having to load everything into the Macs internal drive the way it worked on my PC?
    Latest version of iTunes.
    2 TB hard drive.
    Mac OS X. V 10.7.5

Do you only have media on the external or is your whole iTunes library there?  A complete iTunes library is the  library files, supporting files and folders, and media files.  Media files are just media files.  Hint: Easiest is if it is the whole thing and portable.  It can be relocated when it is not together but it may involve a lot more steps with varying degrees of success.

  • Finding what programs are accessing hard drive

Recently, my Mac Mini has refused to auto-sleep (manual sleep works fine, though occasionally I wake up to find it's on). I've tried all the "usual" things and, just now, simply sat there and listened. After the set sleep period, the monitor went off but I heard the hard drive "access" for a brief period. For the next period, every 10-20seconds, there was brief burst of activity (talking less than a second, mmaybe one read or write process). I don't know how I could track what processes are accessing the hard drive, but if I could, I could finally track down the bandit that's keeping my Mac awake. Anyone know of a way I could accomplish this?

Nevermind. I found the offending program. It was Western Digital's "Button Manager". I have a Firewire My Book, so I'll see if I can uninstall the program.
I'd still be interested if there's a utility to track which programs access the HDD, but I consider this problem "answered" now

  • Accessing hard drives connected by airport remotely

    Hi
I have two large hard drives connected to my airport extreme that I would like to have access to remotely. I have enabled file sharing and can acces the files over my wifi connection. Also I have enabled "remote file sharing" and can access these drives via the following workflow.  Go To Server > "afp://10.0.1.1"  .....  I would like to be able to access these files in a similar fashion as "Back to my Mac" but without mobile me.  I am a bit of a networking novice, so I may be unclear on several things:
Do I set up an external ip address for my airport extreme or is there one for it already?
Do I need to setup a dns, domain name or somehow register this ip address via dyndns.org?
Do I need to setup an appletalk protocol?
Do I need to contact my ISP and make arrangements through them to have this work?
Do I need to set up a Leopard server on a Mac mini for this to work...
Any advice, of direction to head in this matter would be much appreciated!
    thanks

    >Setup an out of range DHCP reservation (10.0.1.201)
Actually with DHCP Reservation, the IP address should be within the DHCP range. The reservation feature makes sure that this IP is not provided to any other network client, i.e., it is reserved to one specific client by its MAC address.
Ok, so let's go over the basic steps to see if anything was missed.
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn, and then, note the IP address shown.
    Select Manual Setup.
Verify that Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address is selected on the Internet > Internet Connection tab.
Select Disks, and then, select File Sharing.
Verify that both the "Enable file sharing" and "Share disks over WAN" options are enabled.
Verify that Secure Shared Disks = With a disk password. (Recommended)
Verify that AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed. (Recommended)
Select Advanced, and then, select the Port Mapping tab.
Click the plus sign to add a new port mapping.
For Service, select the "Personal File Sharing" option. (Note: This option would only allow Mac clients to access the AirPort Disks. If you want both Macs and PCs to connect, you would need to leave this field at its default value and enter the appropriate SMB ports to the mix of ports to be opened.)
In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 8888) that you choose. In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your AEBSn that you wrote down in step 1. In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548. Click Continue.
In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "AirPort Disk File Sharing," and then, click Done.
    Click on Update.
To connect to the shared AirPort Disk from a remote location using a Mac:
From the Finder > Go > Connect to Server.
Enter the DynDNS-provided Domain Name or Pubic (WAN-side) IP address of the AEBSn, followed by a colon and the Public port number that you choose in step 11 of the previous procedure. For example: afp://www.mydyndnsdomain.com:8888 or afp://123.456.789.123:8888
    Click Connect.
You should be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password should be the Disk password for the AEBSn that you created in step 6 previously.
    Click Connect.

  • Can i access hard drive wirelessly via time capsule?

I have a macbook pro with a full hard drive, a time capsule and an external hard drive.
I want to be able to access my files wirelessly and backup regularly.
Is the best option to use my external hard drive as my new hard drive, with automatic backup to the time capsule?
If I leave the external hard drive connected by usb to the time capsule will this mean I can wirelessly access them?
And finally what is the best way to move my files from my macbook pro to the external hard drive?

As I understand it.. and one of the other eggs spurts here may correct me. There are issues doing this.
An external drive plugged into TC can be used to store your files, but will not be backed up. (Not by Time Machine at least) And extremely inefficiently if you create a directory on the TC drive because it will be copied back to the computer and then onto the TC again. The external drive would have to be plugged directly into the computer for it to include the files in the backup.
So you have some choices. Each with a caveat.
    1. Create a directory on the TC and store your files there. That is the best way for speed. Although a USB drive access is probably no worse by wireless. It will not get backed up though. At least not via TM, you can manually do the backup. And should do so if the TC becomes the only place the files are stored.
    2. Plug the external hdd into the computer directly.. that is messy and obviously not what you want but the files are then included in the backup. It is considerably faster though.
    3. Buy a larger hdd for the MBP.
